Bill, I felt the same way. Jaz did not travel until she was 15. AAU is an entirely different level. Google girls AAU basketball teams in your area. Most girls start at like 10. They have this BIG tournament in the ATL every summer and Jaz got like 20 college coaches sending letters her first summer. And now that she is a junior they text her and can call a couple times a month. The scouts and coaches have to follow ncaa standards/rules. I traveled to every tournament the first summer. But now I let her go without me. Their coach is a maniac..LOL She doesnt play! These girls are so tired after practice and games all they can do is sleep. She stops on the road to make them run at the rest stop. My daughter prefers to fly for that reason!! They just got back from Carolina they were 4:2. They did pretty good. To Whom It May Concern:
During the 1970s, concern grew in the African American community about how children were being processed through the American educational system. The perspective of Carter G. Woodson was rediscovered. He wrote that Black people have been “miseducated” into confusing their interests with those of the dominant society. Woodson wrote that the struggle for liberation is long-term; therefore, the educational system must serve a consciousness-raising function that will prepare Black people to make a contribution to a struggle that began centuries before they were born. As African American teachers we know that the Black child is constantly bombarded with racial stereotypes and unfair assumptions that manifest themselves in the form of self-fulfilling prophecies. We know that White, Latino, Asian, and even fellow African American teachers perpetuate theories of Black intellectual inferiority (consciously and subconsciously) by treating the Black child as though she is incapable of academic success. Tomorrow at work please inform you’re your colleagues that African American children don’t need to be treated differently than their White counterparts; however, it is important for them to recognize the cultural differences that exist between them in order for African American students to thrive academically.
These teachers need to realize that at home, in their neighborhoods, and in school, many African American students face difficulties that can interfere with learning. Compared to their middle-class counterparts, it is true that disenfranchised students are more likely to be exposed to safety and health risks and less likely to receive regular medical care. They’re more likely to be victims of crime. They’re less likely to attend schools that have talented and gifted programs and are more likely to be identified as learning or emotionally disabled and placed in Exceptional Education. African American children need caring adults who will mentor them during turbulent times and not give up on them.
As African American teachers, we are vital in the lives of Black children because we often play the role of missing parental figures by acting as disciplinarians, counselors, and role models. Young African American students can directly benefit from relationships with young African American teachers 23–35 because we can often serve as surrogate big brothers and sisters and are cognizant of the latest trends in music, sports, fashion, etc. We also empathize with the X generation’s sense of situated identity conflict and inadequacy.
I know that you are underpaid and unappreciated, but please hang in there for our children. There will always be days when you feel as though you want to change careers, but remember why you decided to become a teacher in the first place. Your reward will come later; when you run into one of your student’s that went from failing to passing thanks to your hard work and dedication, and they tell you that they have finished college and have a wonderful career.

WOW! People get that deep on the COMPUTER? Guess I am naive huh? That is crazy. I come here to chat/blog/ whatever you want to call it. But with all the HELL I have been through and the price that I have paid for the happiness I experience in my marriage and in my home. I would not even RISK it on a possibility! I kick it here and laugh with you guys and sometimes AT you guys. Sometimes we share our personal stories but to risk your whole life for a stranger that is just a bit crazy in my book. I didn’t know it got that deep in the chat room either and I STAYED up in there b4 it got shut down.

One thing leading to another?????? Damn, I think that is all up to the person itself. I didn’t see it getting that deep in there. But I don’t know what went on after I left either.

I’m like you, I come in kick it, laugh, crack a few jokes and go the hell home. I’ve made it my duty and promise to not come in on the weekends or at night. I have a household to take care of. I get paid to sit on the loop. LOL

A message to all you regulars in the chatroom…COME OUT while the blood is still running warm in yo veins! Angel had to close that chatroom down, because some of those primal blacks didn’t know how to act!

DDS my thoughts exactly..If u look at my comments I am not here at night or on the weekends. And during the day I sit in front of my puter. Talking to ya’ll and to my patients on the phone.

WOW that is interesting that both u guys feel the same way. I give out my e-mail all the time. It’s NOT my number or my home address. True I dont have a myspace and neither does my husband or my daughter. I did not know people looked at e-mail that personally. Now I am thinking, with all the people I email (male and female) does one of my friends (cyber or in person) think I am too personal with them. things that make u go mmmmmmh. I will have to re-evaluate somethings I do.
