It is a tradition at the Derby to be dressed to the nines, in days of olde attending the Derby was a sign that you were a part the elite in the community. So one way of showing this was by trying to one up another in your garments, needless to say, blacks were not a part of this tradition, our roles were as servants. This race is also responsible for “the Derby brim”.
