With all the popularity and the success she has garnered from her single featuring her labelmate and president, Jay-Z entitled “Umbrella,” Rihanna has solidified herself as a crossover pop artist. She’s known throughout the world and has really put her foot forward into proving that she’s got staying power. And as I’ve predicted, Rihanna has for the most part, fully dropped the dancehall influence in her music, all but one and a half tracks. Although “Good Girl Gone Bad” is far from flawless, it has shown that Rihanna is trying to touch some different aspects of different kinds of music, so that she doesn’t have to be stuck in the typical R&B box. Rhianna has one of those typical carribean voices. that is why people are diggin her all over the world. I went to a Carribean festival in Memphis in May and let me tell you that her is mild compared to some hard core Carribean accents. Some music and voice are like alcohol – it’s an aquired taste. So I can dig her – I used to hate unfaithful til I sat down and took a listen without the expectation of her music to sound like straight r&b or straight pop. So I like it and I am definitely going to cop it. Do you Rhianna.

I hate all of the Rihanna-Beyaki comparisons but “Good Girl Gone Bad” does sound kinda Irreplaceable-ish…but clearly because of the drumline to me, and that’s it. I like Sell Me Candy. Rihanna is just all over the place like the weather. Its great for an artist to reinvent themselves, but she hasn’t even been around long enough for that type of emancipation to be necessary. As much as people like to think that they rage against the popular music machine, if an artist doesn’t fit into a genre box they are largely overlooked by the music buying public at large. I guess Rihanna is trying to figure out where she fits in…or where the biggest checks come from!

It’s unfortunate that those who love to make music are sometimes not necessarily good at it. Rihanna seems to love singing however, she is not a good singer and I won’t patronize her (like Paula Abdul does with those singers who are horrendous) and state how pretty I think she is even though she is an attractive young lady because the topic is her singing. The fact of the matter is that her record label has released three Cds in about three years because I believe they know that if they do not do this people will forget about her and then focus solely on her vocals and not her beauty. Unless when you place a Cd in the player a hologram appears showing how pretty she is we should focus on her singing. Too many “singers” get by off of other talents such as dancing , beauty and personality alone and that is why music is what it is today.

Ease up 51. Why couldn’t aaliyah be compared to rihanna? They started off the same way, young with a marketable image before talent. The talent comes later when they work with vocalists and fine tune what they’re already working with. It may not sound like anything to you now but it will later. I have to agree that she’s no Destra or Allison or Onika but I’m not gonna condem someone for trying to suceed at something they love. Of course Alliayh used all the things you mentioned to make it, if she didn;t then how did she do it. If remember correctly she had to reinvent herslef too. She started off in the ectra baggy clothes and shades no weave, then she grew up and started dressing more scantily, wearing an extra long weave and getiing more explicit with lyrics. All artists have to do it to stay fresh.
