And all it took was an old white man…
The NAACP is reportedly holding a funeral this summer in Detroit for the “N” word, in light of the Don Imus controversy.
Much like they did 63 years ago with the symbolic funeral for Jim Crow, the civil rights organization will do the same for the slang term, Rev. Wendell Anthony told the Associated Press on Sunday (April 29).
“We are committed to ending hate — word and talk,” Anthony said. “It doesn’t do anyone any good, whether it’s a journalist on TV or a rapper on the radio.”
The symbolic funeral, which will be held July 7-12 in Detroit, calls for African Americans to boycott music that uses such language.
So far, legendary hip-hop artists such as MC Lyte and Doug E. Fresh, have signed on to the campaign, The Detroit News reports.
The announcement comes after Imus sparked national discussion about racial insensitivity, following derogatory comments he made about black members of the Rutgers University women’s basketball team.
Although he didn’t use the “N” word in those comments, he did use the term “nappy headed hoes.” Imus was fired in early April by CBS Radio and NBC after major companies began pulling their advertising spots.
With corporate America taking notice, the NAACP feel that it’s time to make something happen. SOURCE
Corporate America been took notice, especially those corporate heads sitting in as record execs. Do you think this burial of the N-word will help to solve anything?
Amen!
no matter how hard they try…the n-word aint going nowhere, nigga….lol
I don’t think burial of the “n-word” will solve all of our issues…but it is a step in the right direction.
Great !!!
The N- Word has got to stop.
Good old Detroit. Maybe after the funeral they will all march down to the baseball stadium and watch the Tigers win a game!!
But seriously, it would be nice to not hear that word out in public. It’s so embarrassing when someone yells it out in a public place.
WTF? Okay! I agree it is an offensive word, but if we only put this much time & energy on improvement in other areas instead of just debating.
I really don’t burial of this word will stop the use of it, but it will help slow it down….Just not in the hood.
This word will always be here its up to individuals to change their thinking and mindset as to not use the word. i applaud the effort though that I see we are making in trying not to use the word as much as we use too.
My mama always told me that there’s strength in numbers. I think this “funeral” for the N word will make a difference ONLY if those in the black community (especially those in the public eye) ie Rappers, Actors etc follow it.
Im with everyone else I doubt it will resolve anything! I dont agree with the word but ppl are STILL going to use it, kinda sad
Oh…and they probably WON’T so, NO..it won’t do any good
Do you think this burial of the N-word will help to solve anything?
My answer: Nope.
This will only have a chance to succeed with more prominent backing from stars in the present lime light not the past
I agree with ya wonder women aka Tam you have to lead by example and are rappers/actors really gonna stop using the word and no they wont. we as a black commuinty have a long way to go but what people see on tv are those and actors and if they show no respect to their own race then other races are thinking why should we.
I have suggestion for the NAACP.. how about they bury the CP at the end ? colored people? Change that first, then I’ll listen
these people make me laugh thats funny but they serious…cause REGARDLESS PEOPLE ARE GOIN TO SAY IT! Good luck! Plus white people all ready adapted to it
Agree #9
Cosign with #3, its a start. It’s good that the NAACP is doing this, but I think some people just need to make a conscious effort to stop saying it in their homes, and around their kids. There’s no need to wait on these rappers to step up to the plate, positive change begins at home.
yeah i hardly say that word myself but it isnt going anywhere. Especially cause white people call each other that now.
TOO LATE! Like a plague, the use of the word has spread and infested the minds of weak adults and kids alike. No cure in sight.
The people that use this word spew the sh!t mindlessly, in every sentence, in every other word. I hear it daily. TOO LATE!
Great try and effort but THE WORD isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.if black america really wanted to do something about this and was really concerned…this would have happened a long time ago…that’s my opinion anyway.yes some people are highly influenced by hip-hop and whatever else but the bottom line is, grown men and women are going to use the word regardless. They don’t care if T.I., Jay Z or whoever else chooses not too. Also the black community uses that the “n” word in so many ways. People call their friends their “Niggas”, people they don’t like the “niggas”…i can’t see it changing. no matter how DEEP you try to “bury” it. bottom line-dude was wrong from going on like he did for no reason and embarrassing that b-ball team and he got what he deserved but….the black community need to come correct too and we(all of us) as a people aren’t ready to take it there…fo real
I agree # 19
The word is not going away anytime soon, but the seed for change has been planted.
I think that it is a start but I also think that it would very difficult for people to just completly erase the word from their vocabulary. It will take years to eradicate these words out of our culture just like it took 300 years to get rid of slavery. At least people are starting to recognize that there is a problem and this could be the starting point for saving our youth.
It would be nice. But IMO it will always be around, the N-word isn’t going anywhere. It is a diease and what’s funny is that “blacks” get so upset when the wrong people use it but “we” continue to use the word ourselves. I guess it’s a matter of perosnal growth or lack of growth!
Does anyway out there listen to Road Runner radio(Music Choice)I have been jamming all morning! I’m currently listening to R&B hits station-tune in!
http://ilovenewyork2.com/people/jlewis84
It’s a step in the right direction but it won’t have much of an impact, especially on the younger generation. Some can’t even make a complete sentence without using the “n” word, which is really sad.
Yes it will change something.
Because it is symbolic, we will have an official date and ceremony that will show our official desire to stop using the N word within the community first.
Because Chamillionaire said (and if you report that don’t forget who told y’all first Concreteloop!!!) that in his next album he decided to NOT use the N, B and H words, not even the F word, he’s doing a profanity-free album, he believes hits don’t need to be disrespectful. I hope other rappers will follow, and I commend him for being willing to make a change.
Because Russell Simmons publicly encouraged rappers to stop using the N word. Now you’ll tell me that could be a publicity stunt, but since there’s room for change maybe he’s really trying to do something today.
Because if slaves ended slavery, a system that was working for centuries, if the community stopped segregation so we could go anywhere we wanted and sit on any place in the bus, why couldn’t we change the mindset of our people? Why couldn’t we stop using the N word? Stop thinking that the slave mentality (cause YES the N word is a reflection of it) will never end because it can, but we have to believe cause believing is half of the victory!
Be the change you want to see in the world.
^ Exactly, in the words of Ghandi. I’m tired of pessimistic people. Anything is possible if we’re all willing to change.
RIP to this hateful word
nigga
sorry, i just wanted to use the word for the last coula times before it gets banned
TEST
IM HAVING AN ISSUE POSTING
SMH @ Lashonda. Self-hating wench
I don’t think this move will change things but I guess any move is a positive one.
LMAO LASHONDA YOU A MESS LOL
I’VE STOPPED USING THE N-WORD.
I’M DECIDED TO USE MY EDUCATION AND INTELLECT. AS A RESULT I NOW SAY:
KNEE GROWS OR NINJAS
The NAACP is irrelavant. The word Nigga is like pig feet and chitlings it was given to us as slop but everyone that complains of the word nigga loves some pig even though it was given to the slave as trash to eat. Nigga has been made so that it can be a negative or a positive. So in other words you can be my nigga or can be a nigga.
Ending the use of the word is merely symbolic, in my mind. There needs to be a transformation of being for so many of us. If the sentiments of inferiority and a mindless adherence to by-gone notions of inherent depravity persist within the black community, us speaking only the approved language won’t do much good. So many black folks have grown extremely accustomed to living duplicitous lives anyway, borne originally of survival, that it, if the campaign is successful, will only allow those of us who have something to lose (face) when compared to “lesser” brothers and sisters feel far too comfortable. The ones who need to understand they are not worthless souls will keep living as they did the day before this word is eulogized. As long as the ones who have “made it” don’t have to hear the guttural pangs of ignorance and self worthlessness, all is fine. Some of us feel an obsequious responsibility to the powers that be to keep the masses quiet and in line in order to validate their own positions within the status quo’s world.
How many folks have actually considered the time, effort and resources it took to break so many in the black community to behave, think and believe they are slaves? I do mean slave. Many of us still behave as such. And many wear suits to work. How many folks have actually considered the time, effort and resources it will take to convince many in the black community they are human and are empowered to change their lives? Rallying to end the use of the word publicly? Don’t count me in on that march. They are merely appeasing the same folks who allowed it to flourish and who profited from our pain.
The NAACP should be ashamed of itself for making a move only with “corporate America taking notice.” They answer to corporate America now? They are afraid to speak out except when they have tacit approval to do so? Are these folks now lap dogs? Is the NAACP even relevant anymore? This is not a new or developing issue. It’s as old as our first foot touching this soil.
All I have to say is we need to get up and not in front of a camera or wait until we are allowed to do so. By get up, I mean, make better personal choices, respect our families, wives, girlfriends, husbands, boyfriends, children, households, our communities and most importantly ourselves. It starts with the little, unspectacular things, in my opinion. If these things can be accomplished over time then the word will sunset itself and become an anachronism without all the fanfare and worthless hoopla.
IM NOT GO STOP SAYIN THIS WORD, NOT CAUSE I HAVE TO SAY IT, JUST CAUSE ITS A HABIT AND FUK WHOEVA HAS ANYTHANG TO SAY ABOUT IT, ITS MY PEROGATIVE AND LAST I CHECKED..IM GROWN AND HOLD MY OWN. BUT YES, ITS A GOOD START WHAT NAACP IS DOING. BUT THE REALITY IS THAT ITS NOT GONNA CHANGE MUCH. I GIVE AN E FOR EFFORT
#40 is the reason the word ain’t going nowhere.
Well said, dummy.
well R.I.P nigga
Of course it’s a start but let’s be realistic, people are still going to say it.
OMG LMAO @ N.O._finest!
Well I said that I was going to try and stop saying it after the Kramer inicident and I have been doing very well I must say. I still use it from time to time but not as much as I did before. So I applaud NAACP for their actions. At least it’s a start. And you have to start somewhere.
This is so Long overdue…It’s a Start
It should be illegal to use racial slurs (in general)
It should be illegal to cheat on your spouse.&
It should be illegal for gas to be so damn high.
YEAH THEY NEED TO DO THIS, AND WHILE THERE AT IT, THEY NEED TO THROW IMUS’S ASS IN THE HOLE WITH IT, HE RESEMBLES A CORPSE ANYWAY!!!!!!
@ #28
Kudos to Chamillionair for that. I’ll be interested to see how that works and if others will follow suit. Hell, I might even buy the CD just to see how he pulls that off.
I give the NAACP an “E” for effort as well. However, unfortunately this is something that just didn’t get me riled up like everyone else. I guess I just feel like we have bigger fish to fry (e.g. “Saving Darfur”). And you know what else. Phuck Don Imus for trying to shift the blame back to us for his indiscretions. He knows better than that shyt. All these white people know better. They know we can say it and they can’t . Period. I dont give a damn how “disrespectul and self hating” people claim it to me. Personally I love myself and black people as well AND I still use it. I dont use it around white people though, and maybe one day I’ll stop all together. But until then everyone else needs to hold their tongue. Tired of certain white people playing so dumb all the damn time.
** claim it to be. (correction)
I agree this will not automatically solve our issues overnight…..I am glad that people are taking the steps to rectify them. With that said I wanted to share this with you guys, if you havent seen it already!
This was amazing! Go Julian Curry!

@ #28 CHANTE
PREACH, SIS!
OMT – And, if anyone moves the boulder from the tomb, after the third day, the “N” word will rise up from the grave with all power in its hand!!
@ #49 thanks for posting that…DAMN!!!! That was amazing.
Hey Bam Bam
We still need to work on this with all ages. Young and old.
It doesn’t really matter what race you are using the word. It’s offensive all around. At least to me, it is. The word makes me cringe. I’m so not looking forward to the next racial pejorative to be embraced by my community. I can see it now….What’s poopin coon? What you been up to my porch monkey? This is all just pure shite!
Hey Mika! Wasnt it girl? I watch it often, it never gets old to me. It was so thougth provoking and powerful!
LMAO!!! Who’s gone be the pallbearers?? I guess Jessee Jackson and Al Sharpton.
This is all too hilarious to me. Black people are quick to let some racist white person cause self evaluation and elimination of the things we do.
When I was little, my dad would curse like a sailor BUT I knew better! No way in hell was I gonna let my daddy hear me say any of those words he so often said himself. Now, if I got around my little friends and wanted to run off at the mouth, I could because “Daddy wasn’t around.”
We can say nigga as much as we want to BUT white people should know better. It may seem unfair but they just can’t say it….unless they’re with their white friends and “no niggas are around.”
Keep NIGGA alive! **Angela Davis-ly puts fist in the air**
*thought (correction)
Anyways…here’s another one. It doesnt have to do w/the post but it’s still another poweful poem. This girl Zora Howard…..is well before her years.

While i admire the effort, this shit is stupid! You cannot censor people’s emotions and/or choice of words as an adult. Only way this word would leave our tongues is by individual decision only, not some symbolic funeral. Because if this were possible, i’d beg him to throw “bitch” and “hoe” in the pot too.
Get the fuck outta here, seriously.
Wellllllllllllllll……………..its a GOOD TRY!
But lets be HONEST. Its not going nowhere. As long as there is rap & black people there is gonna be that “word”. I dont use it and alot my fam do. I think alot of WHITE ppl say it bcuz they wanna be down. Sounding slow…….Most ppl get mad bcuz it is offensive. They use it but hey whatever. It is what it is.
IMO, in light of the whole Imus “nappy headed hoes” debacle and the new Rush Limbaugh “Magic Negro” ballad, there is more focus being placed on the function on the n-word. None of those industry execs are going to suddenly get a conscience but they are thinking about whether or not this is going to negatively impact their profit margin. Therefore, if something is going to be done, now is the time.
My personal pet peeve is when I hear people using this word in public or in mixed company (i.e. around other races, especially white folks). I love language and can appreciate the complexity of the function of this word. That being said, off the wrong lips and it’s a whole ‘nother story. So if you absolutely must say it, please save that conversation for home or some other private venue.
