NAACP HOLDING A FUNERAL FOR THE N-WORD

THE N WORD.jpg And all it took was an old white man…

The NAACP is reportedly holding a funeral this summer in Detroit for the “N” word, in light of the Don Imus controversy.

Much like they did 63 years ago with the symbolic funeral for Jim Crow, the civil rights organization will do the same for the slang term, Rev. Wendell Anthony told the Associated Press on Sunday (April 29).

“We are committed to ending hate — word and talk,” Anthony said. “It doesn’t do anyone any good, whether it’s a journalist on TV or a rapper on the radio.”

The symbolic funeral, which will be held July 7-12 in Detroit, calls for African Americans to boycott music that uses such language.

So far, legendary hip-hop artists such as MC Lyte and Doug E. Fresh, have signed on to the campaign, The Detroit News reports.

The announcement comes after Imus sparked national discussion about racial insensitivity, following derogatory comments he made about black members of the Rutgers University women’s basketball team.

Although he didn’t use the “N” word in those comments, he did use the term “nappy headed hoes.” Imus was fired in early April by CBS Radio and NBC after major companies began pulling their advertising spots.

With corporate America taking notice, the NAACP feel that it’s time to make something happen. SOURCE

Corporate America been took notice, especially those corporate heads sitting in as record execs. Do you think this burial of the N-word will help to solve anything?

    @#117 & #88

I can see that you, like so many other commentators on this thread, get it. It’s not ALL about the n-word. There are so many other factors in the mix.

    save your money!

i don’t know if by doing this funeral thing that they expect the word to be abolished from society but that is NEVER EVER gonna happen. it would definately be nice though.

  5. chinababy

Make it a double funeral and include the term “Colored People”. That’s just as offensive. How did they bury Jim Crow and not include colored?

All these people are full of sh*t. “Nigga” is not the issue.

We can only eliminate one problem at a time, but this is Definitely a Great Place to start. First get rid of the N word, then get rid of ALL the other nasty words people use to negatively IDENTIFY others with..

Everyone will not stop using the N word, but if 90% of people stop, I can almost GuaranTEE that the other 10% will feel stupid as hell after using the word, if a long period of silence follows it.

btw, i love the “intelligent people” posting their thoughts on this site!

    you Folks ROck.

What in the world is wrong with us. We been saying nigga for years. (Not that it is a good thing) But a funeral is plain out retarded. What is this going to solve, who is this going to help, and why is it in light of Don Imus? He Didn’t Say It. But Puffy, 50, and Kanye West say it all the time in eveyday life. This makes me mad cause we should be on so many other things. All we doing is telling the black youth that words keep us down. Momma always told me that if you dont like what people are calling you stop answering to it. Where you think Don got Nappy headed ho? 360 Mafia and Too Short. ( And dont think he dont buy a hip hop or r&b CD to make fun of it… just like we do country music) R kelly should not be the hotest artist out there right not, OJ should not be hitting models and popin bottles, Beyonce should not have to look like paris hilton to sell records ( dont trip yall know on BET she look like us and on MTV she look like them…. Flashback ” A Girl Like Me”) We need a funeral to put that mess to rest. And PS IF OBOMA IS NOT THERE WE NEED TO PUT HIS ASS ON BLAST LIKE WE DID BUSH FOR NOT ATTENDING A NCAAP FUCTION DURING A ELECTION YEAR.

#98 baby let me tell you. Everytime I go to church and I see a 15 year old with a one year old baby singing in the choir I see Fantasia. Everytime I see a 15 year old refer to a group of friends as “My Bitches” I see Lil Kim. We doing this to ourself. You think white kids worry out people calling them crackers… Hell No. We fight the little thing and over look the big things. That funeral could have been one big ass “Save the Kids”, or maybe ” Women of Color Respect Yourself”, or better yet ( Black Man Lets go to College”….. No those all a take back seat to the n- word because we so weak minded we allow other people’s word affect our mind state.

  12. BYanna

I applaud them for putting for the effort.

I have taken the n-word out of my vocabulary a while back, it just sounds stupid to say.

  13. RC

    I agree with 66 completely.

LMAO @ # 2. I feel so guilty for laughing at his ignorance but the timing on that one was impecable. I do, on a more serious note, believe in the cause and idea behind the funeral. It’s excellent! They need to also, while they’re at it, give some press to Dr. Claude Anderson’s African Town development that has been in the works there in Detroit since late 2004 early 2005.

WHY AREN’T WE AS CONCERNED ABOUT THE 70% ILLEGITAMACY RATE??????????? or the 50% highschool dropout rate. the NAACP is a pathetic organization and does no real good to the black community when holding a funeral for a word is more important than the real problems blacks face on a daily basis. what was the last thing the NAACP did oh yea they got Aunt Jamima’s scarf taken off on the syrup bottle because its offensive WTF???? the NAACP is a disgrace and needs to stop bullshitting and deal with some real issues for a change.

  16. KA-EISHA

I AM A 19 YEAR OLD AFRICAN CANADIAN (ORIGINALLY FROM TRINIDAD), AND WHAT DO THEY THINK BURYING THA “N” WORD IS GOING TO PROVE?? THIS IS JUST A WHOLE HEAP OF HYPOCRISY…SO DON IMUS MADE COMMENTS THAT NO BLACK OR WHITE PERSON SHOULD MAKE, BUT I’M SURE IF IT WAS A BLACK RADIO HOST WHO CALLED THESE GIRLS “NAPPY HEADED HOES”, THEN THEY’RE WOULDNT BE SO MUCH DRAMA…THEY WOULDN’T HAVE LOST THEIR JOB OR BEEN CRITISIZED, AND EVERYBODY WOULD’VE SIMPLY LAUGHED IT OFF…

  17. let’s see how this pans out….

  18. real talk

nigga please… lol. that words aint goin no where.. they might as well try to bury shit and fuck. u know its bad when i say it and i dont know it… but its been around for this long… its too late.. nigga.

  19. euana360nTX

    Nigga Naw!!! That’s so silly!!!

  20. DivaKai

This is far past due.Glad that they will be holding a symbloic funeral or cermony to mark NONUSE of this word in the future. Cant say I never used it, but its wrong, and not a part of my vocabulary .Its just not a postive word anyway you look at it.

  21. People still going to use it though.Thats all I’m saying.

  22. Miss Joy

When will the NAACP wake the hell up???? I live in South Carolina, and the local head of our chapter Dot Scott makes me so sick!!! They’re always talking about boycotting and focusing on stupid things that really don’t matter in the black community. People: Maybe boycotting and sit-ins worked back in the 1960s. You can not solve today’s problems with yesterday’s solution. We need another plan. The “funeral” is a good idea, but we need to do more and focus on more things besides the N word. Why are our students dropping out of high school at such an alarming rate? Why is AIDS so rampant in our community? Why is there so much teen pregnancy? Why are our youth so lost and confused? What happened to our families? Why aren’t are men raising thier babies? Answer that for me NAACP!!!

  23. Miss Joy

    And number 65….lol you crazy!!!

  24. deak

i believe that they shouldnt have a funeral for the n word because i believe that people are still going 2 say it because they a use to it

  25. L

Now let me ask a question:
If the white’s had a White group who supported only White’s would that be racist.
And the people who are stuck on slavery, that ended 200yrs. ago soo get over it and move on, there are no slaves in this time period.

  26. nicole

instead of spending time on this mock funeral to uplift the black community, why dont we try being more successful in our lives. spending a little more time in class than in the streets, more time with our family than in the clubs. we are allowed to get an education and to work, and to be positive human beings in the community. so how about we start with that?
