JILLY, My daughter is about to college on bb and academic scholarship and she has met a few WNBA players and we have spoken to reps from over seas. WNBA players don’t make a lot of cash. They get their wealth thru endorsements. Overseas is where the money is. But they want our girls to come overe there fresh out of highschool! They (the team) pay for EVERYTHING for them(players). It like 40- 50k for about 5 months. Sounds like a lot, NOT. It would leave her under educated with SOME money. She is choosing to go to college. She wants to be a vet. I personally found what he said to be funny. Actually when the whole Don Imus thing first came about and I saw the team for myself, I too thought to myself they do look nappy-headed. I agree that we take things entirely too seriously! D.L. is a comedian, he makes his living by expressing the way he sees the world. He’s not an uncle Tom, he’s just expressing what he thinks. If you really want to get technical about this whole “nappy” thing, then you would realize that to imply that being nappy headed is a bad thing, is to imply that you’ve bought into the stereotype that only straight hair is beautiful which I think is far worse than taking offense to nappy comments.

The right to free speech protects us against governmental action, not private action. That means that the right to free speech has nothing to do with the Imus situation, or with the DL situation. There’s only a free speech issue when the government tries to put a person in jail or in some other way penalizes a person for certain types of speech. Get a damn education and learn your history before you try to educate others. I know people who have been fired for a hell of a lot less than what Imus was fired for. In fact, if I had an employee who called the Chinese National Volleyball team a bunch of “slant-eyed hos” or the US National soccer team a bunch of “flat-ass, pita-bread-lipped, pasty-faced hos”, I’d fire that person on the spot, and I don’t think the people who are defending Imus or DL would say anything about it. Had Tom Joyner or Wendy Williams or any number of other black syndicated radio hosts made the same comments about the Rutgers girls, you would have hardly got a mumble out of the larger black community and Oprah wouldn’t have even rolled out of bed for it. But because a white man said it, it becomes a racial issue, rather that a “those girl were just plain ugly issue”, WE made it into a color issue, NOT HIM.
