RIHANNA SAYS “SHUT UP & DRIVE!”

Thursday, May 10, 2007

shutup.jpg

With all the success of Rihanna’s latest single, “Umbrella” featuring none other than Jay-Z, Rihanna is trying to let you know that she has staying power. She’s kicked out 3 albums in the past 3 years. Each of the albums though, Rihanna has tried to keep in touch with her Carribean roots. I think that this time around, Rihanna may have abandoned that. On “Shut Up & Drive,” it took me a little while to get into it, but towards the end, it has the vibe of an old 80’s pop record, and I can appreciate what she was going for on the song. I’ll repost as soon as we get the high quality version of it.

I kind of like it. I don’t think people are going to fall to easily for this new sound from her though.

I think the song would fit somebody else…preferably Fefe Dobson.

Hey People,

Im so disgusted with this song.. Honestly when i Heard it I thought it was lindsay lohan…this song is a downgrade to what were used to hearing from rihanna..

Really what was going through Jay-z’s head when he said this is a hit..this is her next single and music video coming out in 2 weeks..WOWOWOW not impressed at all…rihanna officially nominated for “ONE HIT WONDER” LOL

Sounds like its related to that Janet song, “Just A Little While”

Oh how i love Rihanna, I still prefer UMBRELLA to this song but i love them both.

This is shaping up to be a solid album.

I feel its too soon to release another single because Umbrella hasnt peaked yet.

I also have concerns about her new sound. Fans might be feel alienated.

I am also concerned that she is forgetting where she came from. This is straight rock/pop.

Where is the reggae? Where is the dancehall?

Come on Rihanna i love you but you have to represent.

I have this song on repeat.

Shut up & Drive

I think the song is okay. I like Umbrella way better! I am sick of tired of Jay-z women making refrence to thug life; glamouring it. If we can diss hip hop we can dismiss the sublimials. Their taste in men should remain to themselves…she should take her own advice and shut up and drive!

@Melisus

Yeah she was. She was in Bring It On 2. The only reason I know is because that is my daughters favorite movie. But let’s face it. She is a pretty girl but she definitely cannot sing. She can’t sing, can’t dance…what can she do? What did she have to do (or should I say how many did she have to do) to get where she is today?

LMAO @ #46.

On another note I cant hate that she is trying to reach the rock pop crowd. Im glad actually cause Im tired of all these lily whites (Fergie, Nelly, Gwen, Justin, Robin Thicke, Joss stone) crossing over to the black market, while black artists are constricted to R&B. I just wish she would have done a better rock song. And is anyone noticing that this chick rihanna is a BITIN fool?!!

She started off jacking beyonce and now she just committed identity theft on my girl fefe dobson. She needs to come back and take her life back from this jacker!

56.

58.

Thursday, May 10, 2007 /

@55 oh please rihanna doesnt sound like shes copying fefe dobson, why would she??

this song is “catchy” and will appeal to people with a 5 year olds ear for music, but its very poppy. it sounds like something they wanted to give to Britney Spears before she went all loopy.

It is sad how white musicians are allowed to cross over to the black genre, but blacks arent allowed to do the same. for insance Nadia Turner (from American Idol) was saying how she loves to sing rock and everytime a record exec meet her there like “you have a great sound and a great voice, but we dont know how to market a black girl who sings rock” WTF!!

I also think its sad that Rihanna has left her carribean roots behind and has abandones that sound. i think she should have kept it, at least in a few songs cus it made her standout from other artists

61.

*$3xy R3db0n3*

Thursday, May 10, 2007 /

That is true….JT, Robin Thicke, Gwen Stefani and them can sing like us or do a song that’s R&B and the minute we want to do one of their songs it doesnt get played or the record excs dont allow it.

That’s some bullshit dont you think?

62.

Charmane

Thursday, May 10, 2007 /

@59 if your talking to me (I was 56) then yes you can obviously tell she is jacking fefe dobson. That dark short cut, the “rock” edgy clothing. And now this generic pop “rock” song…..all of this points to fefe dobson. Fefe was just as formulated as this girl, but atleast she created her style and wrote her music. Rihanna seems lie the cheap knock off version of her (music wise) but its sad that she will most likely be waaaaay more successful than fefe.

Reading some of the comments on this single affirms why most blacks are not in marketing, if you want to be pigeon holed as a black artist, all one needs to do to accomplish this is to have “typical” black representation, by typical I mean representation that only see’s B.E.T as your audience, when it’s time for your music or whatever artform you do to go to market. A poster said “do you really think B.E.T will play this”.. It really doesn’t matter if B.E.T puts this song/video in rotation, B.E.T are small fish in a very big ocean. And who watches B.E.T anymore besides hood trash? Jay Z is a mastermind at marketing he knows what he’s doing he’s far from typical.

On another note, blacks in the last 40 to 50 years have pigeon holed themselves when it comes to what so called “black music” is.. Jimi Hendrix, a black man single handedly revolutionized rock and roll, instead of blacks of the time embracing this brother, he was virtually black balled in our community, Lenny Kravitz once said “It’s ashame that brothers and sisters don’t allow themselves to experience something new in music in the present, we tend get hip to it 30, 40 years AFTER the artist is dead” If that’s not the truth then I don’t know what is.

Perfect example, TI’s big hit last summer “What you know about dat” was based ENTIRELY off a song Jimi Hendrix recorded in 1967 called Hey Joe. Not many black people know this, because you aint black if listen to rock and roll..And we wonder why the powers that be continously market the same bullshit music to black people? So once again I say, there’s a reason why not many blacks are not in Marketing, not all of it is because of rascism, it’s because blacks tend to not have a bigger vision than what the hell B.E.T is playing… Real Talk!

I totally feel what you are saying, but I think that it does not apply here.

Rihanna is not doing anything revolutionary. Yes, she is trying something new, but that does not make it golden. If anything, I would argue it is a contrived attempt at making some point that she has no credentials to be making. Yes, Rihanna you have had quite a number of albums. Alas, all of them basically lacked that undeniable “it” factor that your competitors have.

Many are not feeling this song because it is just T. I. to the color Red.

Hearing this makes me long for the days of Evelyn “Champagne” King, Michel’le, Cheryl Lynn and Deniece Williams, SWV and others. You know, back when sisters actually had voices.

Hear Hear Woode29 @63. I don’t understand why black people always want everybody cookie cutter, exactly the same. Jay-Z is no fool. Why not let a black star cross over into the pop/rock market? The Black market is saturated with samey samey acts. And as some have mentioned in this blog, there are numerous white acts crossing over in to the urban market and sound. And who we got (that’s still alive?): Lenny Kravitz…that’s about it! Besides how many times have we heard how Rihanna doesn’t have a good R&B voice? She is better suited to Pop. Evidently her people recognised this, and are going to see if she can make it to the wider audience. Good business sense. I don’t know who wrote the memo that every black singer must be a hip hop/R&B artist catering only to the wider black audience…. musta missed some of us!

Corrine Bailey Rae is an excellent example of folks of the Diaspora crossover– as well as Alicia Keyes, John Legend and others who are under the radar.

This song illustrates that Rihanna is only crossing over to some teeny bop waters. She is not going to be some driving force in the pop world with this installation.

Corrine Bailey Rae is an excellent example of folks of the Diaspora who crossover– as well as Alicia Keyes & John Legend and others who are under the radar.

So Black people do have success beyond Black audiences. Further, white people tend to be the ones who actually go out and buy the music anyway. So in that sense, nearly everyone crosses over.

This song illustrates that Rihanna is only crossing over to some troubled teeny bop waters. She is not going to be some driving force in the pop world with this installation.

70.

Yeah Right

Thursday, May 10, 2007 /

@63 Its all good to experience and step out the box but if its not good then its not good.Stop trying to make it seem people are coming at her cause she doing “rock/pop” and not R&B it has nothing to do with that for me. And i KNOW you didn’t include Jimi Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz while speaking on Rihanna. Get a grip. I know you think she pretty and all but stop acting p***y whipped

71.

woode29

Thursday, May 10, 2007 /

@ Yeah Right

What? I used Jimi Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz as examples because; They did not play “sterotypical” black music and their audiences are primarily non black. It’s called comparison by contrast. I was in no way implying Rihanna is a musical genius, clearly you’re not a genius by failing to see that. Also, next time you attempt to barge into an adult conversation, it would be nice if your statement makes a clear, concise point. What the hell does “pussy whipped” have to do with this topic?

U guys THIS is NOT ROCK do u guys even listen to ROCK music this is A POP songwith a LITTLE ROck influence. Anyway Kelly Clrakson isn’t EVEN considered ROck she’s POP/ROck.

I love Pop/ROck or pure ROCk. IF a BLack person sings ROCK like Fefe or Jada Pinkett U guys would diss just like U R doing to Rihanna even though “Shut up & Drive’ is a Pop song.

REMEMEBER BLACKS INVENTED ROCK MUSIC if I was a singer that is what genre I would sing or the blues I wouldn’t care who DID NOT LIKE IT. THERE ARE A LOT OF BLACKS THAT LISTEN TO ROCK MUSIC. IT IS GOOD THAT SHE”S TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM HER USUAL STYLE THOUGH.

UMBRELLA IS NOT ON ITUNES YET that’s how artist gets their hits it is a combination of radio play and ITunes is a major factor and when it gets on there TRUST ME IT WILL BE A TOP TEN HIT…I’m not even a big fan of hers.

This will also be a hit a lot of people like it already. AS far as BET they don’t even play her songs anyway that would be MTV.
