“Mama” will start production in Baton Rouge, La., next month. It’s slated for theatrical release next February under CodeBlack’s multi-picture deal with Fox’s FoxFaith label.
“Mama, I Want to Sing!” tells the story of a preacher’s daughter, who rises from the church choir to pop stardom; the character’s based on Doris Troy, best known for the 1963 hit “Just One Look.” The stage show played more than 2,400 performances between 1983 to 1991.
Deal marks the first feature role for Ciara, a Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter who will play the lead.
According to Sandra Rose, rapper Diamond of the rap group Crime Mob was arrested on aggravated assault charges stemming from a May 15th stabbing incident on board the group’s tour bus.
According to a source close to Diamond, the rapper and another woman aboard the tour bus were arguing over a man when another female on the bus (alleged to be a friend of Diamond’s) intervened and slashed the woman’s face with a sharp object, possibly a knife.

DMV EMPLOYEE IMPERSONATES NIA & ASHANTI
Ashanti and Nia Long were just two of several other people defrauded by Henrietta, New York couple Charles Curry, Jr. and Shameika Drain Curry in a scheme that was uncovered earlier this week.
In the scheme, the couple requested a replacement drivers license in Ashanti’s name in August 2006 and also said that she had moved from Nassau County to Rochester. When they received the new ID, Shameika reportedly impersonated the singer to purchase a 2003 Infiniti and secure a $37,000 loan from a local bank.
In another incident, Shameika also impersonated Nia Long to write a check for upwards of $8,000 to Shameika’s cleaning service.
The couple also was also receiving mail at their residence in Mariah Carey’s name, though it wasn’t immediately clear whether or not they had attempted to defraud her as well. [SOURCE]

Thanks for posting this! And I dont think Ciara is gonna get ghost vocals. Come on now, she knows people already doubt her singing abilities so if she were to fake her way through this movie she would be proving them right. My opinion on Ciara is that she has a ok voice, but definetly not someone who can go into a movie like this without any vocal preparation. She will have to get down and dirty with a vocal coach before she even attempts to do a singing scene.
I have faith tho because she has surprised me a couple of times in her concerts.

I saw the play. “Mama I Want to Sing” years ago with Desiree Coleman. It was very good. I just can’t see Ciara playing the lead role. She just doesn’t have the voice.

I’m excited about this movie. I remember reading the book a long time ago and it was very touching. Congratualtions to Ciara and starring in a movie with Patti LaBelle and Lynn Whitfeld is amazing.
Also, for whoever actually believed that the woman who was impersonating Ashanti and Nia Long need their heads examined. How did she get away with that? That is just crazy.
