Beyonce on Broadway, in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof! I heard about this yesterday. I read Audra McDonald was removed from the spot b/c they wanted a bigger name in the role. C’mon did they not see Dreamgirls, Carmen, or Austin Powers? Hell have they heard her give an interview! There is now doubting Bey’s singing ability but the acting..pfft!

I mean Liz Taylor won the Oscar for playing Maggie. Maggie is such a complex character, broadway is a different beast,people ripped Julia Roberts apart in Three Days of Rain and she is considered one of the best actresses of this generation.

A Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with an all-star, all-African-American cast has suffered a setback but is still aiming for an October start date in a Shubert house, according to the show’s producer, Stephen Byrd.

Kenny Leon had initially been attached (but not officially signed on) to direct the project. Now, Leon is no longer with the project, and the veteran Broadway actor-choreographer Debbie Allen has signed on to direct. Tony winner Phylicia Rashad, Allen’s sister, is in talks play Big Mamma.

Byrd says that an offer is currently out to Danny Glover for Big Daddy. Thandie Newton and Anika Noni Rose are among the names being considered for Maggie and Blair Underwood and LL Cool J are among the names being considered for Brick.

Byrd had initially been in talks with Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (to play Big Daddy) and Anthony Mackie (Brick).

Audra McDonald was one of the performers originally considered as a possibility for Maggie. Byrd did not rule out the possibility of casting McDonald if other offers fall through, but he cited her many projects, including her recent CD and her upcoming role in Broadway’s 110 in the Shade, which would presumably end right before Cat on a Hot Tin Roof rehearsals.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is the first theatrical producing project for Byrd, who is African-American. Byrd worked at Goldman Sachs for 15 years and currently runs a private equity fund. He and two of his partners from the fund are bankrolling Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Byrd says he has the rights to the play until mid-2008.

The most recent Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof starred Ashley Judd, Jason Patric and Ned Beatty in 2003. A 1990 revival starred Kathleen Turner, Daniel Hugh Kelly and Charles Durning, and a 1974 revival starred Elizabeth Ashley, Keir Dullea and Fred Gwynne. The original 1955 production starred Barbara Bel Geddes, Ben Gazzara and Burl Ives and was staged by Elia Kazan.

No, I don’t HATE Beyonce - I don’t even know the chick. But from what I’ve seen of her work, she might be biting olff more than she could chew. And I bet u it went down like this:

“Daddy, this ain’t fair! Jennifer got her an Oscar, and now even hood-ass Fantasia is blowin up on Broadway. I want me a play! Oh and by the way, remember Joe Jackson and Jonetta Patton. Yo ass ain’t irreplaceable.”

And what pisses me off more is that a much more talented theater actress is being pushed aside to make room for a mere dilletante with NO THEATER EXPERIENCE. Not to mention that this is a Tenessee Williams play we’re talking about. If Beyonce can’t conquer Austin Powers and the Pink Panther, how the HELL is she gonna tackle this one?

I think Fantasia and JHUD nailed their Broadway and movie debuts based on them being able to project more raw emotion than I’ve seen Beyonce put forth, and also, there is a BIG difference between a musical and a play. Cat On Hot Tin Roof is a straight up complex acting piece, and if you know its history, one best have the acting chops to take it on.

If Bey wants to get what the others chilrenz got, maybe she should take a few small supporting roles in small plays and get that craft down. She can sing and dance, no doubt, but the jury’s still out on her acting piece.

I can’t wait for TGT. I have been a longtime fan of all 3 artist. I think they will all bring something to the table. Alot of people sleep on Tank, but he has a great voice and writing skills. His new album is HOT!!! Hopefully they will make some great music together!

Will anyone tell the truth besides me. You know Beyonce hates to be outdone it, is killing her Fantasia is doing so well on Broadway, you all including Bey and her camp are surprised at Fantasias success, Jhud is doing Avon, Beyonce is doing Armani, Bey is so competitive, and it could very easily flop because her motive are wrong, greed and competition. Fantasia, did not come looking for this role never auditioned, what she and her family did was prayed and she accepted and continue today to still do the same as one critic says and even Oprah her self says no one on the face of this earth can duplicate what Fantasia is doing on stage, she is a natural and she works hard and any role she plays she will excell because she gives her, you criticize her past but it is her past that gives her the strength to excell. Beyonce does not want anyone else to shine. I’m so glad Fantasia is not competitive..This industry has made some people truly in love with themselves and no one else> Bey once is narcissistic. She and Jhud both believe their own press as self proclaimed legends. God resist the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Sometimes only he and He alone can teach us about humility. When we are Gods in our own eyes “watch out”. You may not like the way Fantasia dresses but if you were to go to her sight everyone syas the same thing about her character, an award should never define you, it is your charcater and what others who are around you on a daily basis has to say about you that define you, because even as a Star you still have to get along with and associate with others. I rather for her to have a tattoo and humility and integrity and be the honest person she is anyday. Oprah has denmonstrated to all of us as a people what integrity and the right charcater can do for a person. I know you all don’t hear much of that in California because it’s so superficial and evrything is for show. lack of integrity and poor character, no humility but an awesome gift is what brought Whitney down, and humility will bring her back up if she can learn that lesson, talent means nothing with the right character!!!!
