ALBUM REVIEWS: CHRISETTE MICHELE & MISS KELLY

Tuesday, June 19, 2007

chrisette.jpg

Chrisette Michele seemingly popped up out of nowhere - being on two big singles for, who some would call the greatest rappers in the game right now, but I’ve heard this girl’s name for a while. Her album takes me back to the ’90’s, it’s so very relaxing to just sit and listen. And though I can’t say that I’m completely into the material on the album, it is nicely produced and well put together. “I Am” (released today) was the perfect title. Chrisette’s voice is immaculate - it just floats and rides on every single melody. I’m pretty much sold on her. Her sound is different, her material is appropriate for her voice, and anything that I can just vibe and groove to without doing this most always does it for me. I’m simply in love with the fact that she’s not your typical “neo-soul” (whatever that means) artist.

A lot of folks were a little afraid of the what Kelly Rowland’s fate would be on Music World, because she is still under the management of ex-bandmate and bestfriend Beyonce’s tyrranical father. But finally it seems like we’re getting some results. Due out July 3rd, after several (and that’s an understatement) pushbacks, Kelly’s new album, “Miss Kelly” is completely a departure from her solo debut, “Simply Deep.” Kelly returns to her R&B roots, giving fans an album that’s heavy with mid-tempo R&B tracks, which, for the most part, make great background music. Although I think that “Miss Kelly” is a good return to a solo career and is a pretty well put together album, the material doesn’t quite have the power to garner the overall success that I think was expecting.

Sorry I’m not feeling Ms. Kelly at all.

Why did Chrisette leave her album release party before the album was finished playing? That sounds like she’s not that impressed either. And Kelly….she was doomed from the beginning. She needs to fire Matthew as manager for her solo career because he isn’t really looking out for her. She should have known the first time they were going to release the album that it was lame. Adding a few tracks wasn’t going to help. And Columbia should have pushed “Like This” more because it was actually a nice song and had serious potential. These artists need to read the concreteloop comments more.

I was almost FIRST. Thats what im talkin bout.

Anyway, Kelly is gonna fall off real quick. She’s needs to do something different with her R&B and not the typical Mya and Monica sound

She should do more soulful acousic R&B music like Still in love with my Ex. Give us a sound like that that shows us ur real side. B/c we all know your still in love with the football player u were engaged with. So we know its real talk for u.

I want to see the REAL Kelly. Not manufactured to be a watered-down version of Beyonce.

Kelly just doesnt have it. She’s VERY boring. Beyonce had B’day, Kelly will have Flop Day. That “put it in” shit made me cringe.

Chrisette Michelle is a decent artist. I hope she can come out with a hit.

Kelly has a lot of potential as a solo artist to be something brilliantly different from Beyonce. (SOrry, had to bring her up)

Unfortunately, this album does absolutely nothing to prove that.

I wish yall would stop comparing Kells to beyonce. Yall may no like her album but please. It’s not all that easy in the music biz, especially wit white hollywood judging everything black folks do. I mean least she can actually sing! There’s artist out there who sell their bodies and can’t sing a lick!

Kelly can sing and is talented, unfortunately that is no longer the measure of success in the music industry. You have to sell and appeal to a much broader base and you have to be an entertainer.

Folks will be screaming for her to leave her management, but I ask again… who is standing in line to swoop her up? There are no other management teams or record labels that are checking for her. There is too much competition, and though most people don’t want to admit it, she is actually benefiting from her DC connection.

Although everybody else is complaining, I think that she’s happy. Yes, she is good at singing, but that doesn’t mean she wants to be a solo singer. Like most people she is probably good at a lot of things, and if you listen to, watch or read her interviews, she seems like a homebody. Someone who is ready to settle down and raise a family — She has had fame and fortune as a member of DC, maybe she is content. As members of DC they have been working since they were pre-teens, non stop, going hard.

And there will always be comparisons to Beyonce - and she will always support her and the Knowles family. That’s what real families do… and blood is not the only thing that makes you family. Love runs deeper than blood - always has.

She will be fine.

Regardless of the “success” of this album, she has already proven she is worthy.

Damn does ANYBODY have anything positve to say about Kelly?! Geez! People have been unecessarily raggin on Kelly. I know I am one person, but I happen to like these tracks. They are way better than some of the other stuff that’s been put out lately by other, less talented singers. I know somebody feels the same way i do about Kelly’s material.

Chrisite’s voice is a breath of fresh air! Very throwback and jazzy! i love it

I definitely feel you on that… We need to go back to the days when people decided what they liked by what they bought and what they listened to. Now even before an artist can release a track, you have 100 reviews in magazines and newspapers and 27 listening parties - sh!t is “leaked” - and everybody telling you how you should feel about a song. Kelly is far more talented than some of these artists who might outsell her, or have more endorsements, or appear on more shows. The game has changed, and so many people - even the consumers are caught up in it.

I’m getting so sick of people saying, “Quit comparing Beyonce and Kelly.” Umm, hello? They were in the same group for like umpteen years, so people, whether it be journalists or concreteloop fans, are going to automatically compare the two. It’s natural. So quit all the whining and complaining about how they should stop comaparing Kelly to Bey. I agree that the comparison gets old and should stop. But guess what? It’s not going to stop anytime soon.

On that note, not feeling “Miss Kelly,” but I hope it does well.

However, I’m kinda diggin Chrisette’s music. I love her voice. Sounds a lot like Billie Holiday.

Listening to Kelly’s album in it’s entirety, I actually don’t think it’s a bad album. The joints that stood out for me were “Every Thought Is You”, “Love”, Flashback (it grew on me), the Interlude , I would have really loved it if the beat from the interlude was used for Still In Love With My Ex, but it’s nice.

“lets Rock” is my favorite joint on the Chrisette Michele album i cant stop playing it)—- im totally digging her swagger and rap-like cadence. and her Jazz-like signature style coupled with a contemporary Disco beat just makes for an interestingly enjoyable mix.

“good girl”, “like a dream” and “love is you” stick out as pretty decent songs too

although i didnt fall in love with the entire cd, i’d give her a B+

I just want to hear both albums for myself and not be influenced by the negative opinions I’ve been reading. I’m not pointing fingures or trying to start anything but no one here has heard Kelly’s album besides a song here and there. I want to just buy it, sit back and listen. If it’s good, I’m good. If it’s not, oh well…

I had these chrisette tracks and more for over a month now, she has a unique and talented voice….I seen her perform back in the days before the fame in the “Village Underground”….babygirl can sing.

# 13, you make some valid points about Kelly. However, I don’t fell most people are hating on her. A lot of people are upset because they feel Mr Knowles is holding her back. Being the fact Kelly is so loyal, she defends him and Beyonce to the fullest….this is what pisses people off; Most people on here think Kelly is beautiful and talented, but her full potential will never be known working under Mr Knowles, because he doesn’t want any female becoming more popular than his daughter( ex. Sunshine Anderson, who had about 30 seconds of promotion).

34.

I’m just glad she has developed a greater style of fashion because I used to hurt looking at some of her outfits. She looked like a step-child to me sometimes. Like Momma Knowles said, “Here Kelly, Beyopnce doesn’t want like this anymore so you can have it.”

I love the Chrisette Michele songs, I didn’t pay attention to her untill now I will be getting her album.

I’m no Kelly fan, but I actually thought the Kelly songs were okay the only one I didn’t like was “Put it In” other than that not bad. I don’t think I would like it enough to buy it, but I will download.

38.

Wednesday, June 20, 2007 /

I actually like Kelly’s songs. Put it in grew on me. I can see her doing great performances to these songs. And y’all got a permanent certainty that her album will do bad. But some of the reason why her album is gonna do bad is because none of you will buy her album.

So therefore I say support and she won’t be an actual failure like you predicted.

#13: best post in the thread. I like reading posts from somebody who can THINK. Your name suits you well, LOL.

I, too, think Kelly may be perfectly happy with the way things are. I don’t think she (like 99.9% of people) is cut out to be this dynamic, powerhouse solo performer people seem to think she deserves to be.

I truly believe she was content with her role in DC as a group member and occasional soloist. She has reaped GREAT rewards from being in that role, and even got two solo albums under her belt for good measure. Nothing wrong with that.

Ok I just downloaded Kelly’s whole album and I have to change my mind cause it is definetly hot! Imma have to cop it cause seriously it is a really chill, grown and sexy album….with a unique twist. I hate to admit it but I let other peoples opinions direct my opinions!

Now Im not saying I LOVE LOVE LOVE Kelly, Im just saying her music is nice. Im in love with Ciara because her persona and performances entice me, Kelly just doesnt have that presence to me.

42.

Oh and what happened to “Im in love with my ex”?!!
Its like they took that hip hop out of the song and made it a soft ballad. I like it cause its got a different feel, but I still love the original one featuring Yung Texxus cause that beat hits the spot.

@#13. Your comment has measure. I respect you for pointing out what people are overlooking or hadn’t realised.

Now, Chrisette Michele, man, that girl is awesome. I’ve been listening to the album non-stp since I got it yesterday morning. Each and every song has its own personality and substance. She has wowed/impressed me the same way Leela James wowed/impressed me when she came out with A Change Is Gonna Come. I hope she doesn’t get slept on like Leela has. I’m enjoying Chrisette’s album immensely, from beginning to the end. The fusion of the jazzy elements with the soulful R&B sounds makes for a great listening. And her voice is superb, with a range that is immaculately controlled.

Lol @ #34. Beyonce’s hand me downs. Thats what it seems like.

to #38 and 39, people would buy her album to support her if she wasnt feeding us a LOAD OF CRAP> DUH. Thats why people buy albums, because they like the music being offered to em.

I wasnt hatin on kelly. I was just saying that the girl needs to shine and this music is not really helping. Its not extraordinary. ITs average and we know that she has SOO much more potential than that.

But #13 is right. She doesnt need to prove anything, at least not if she doesnt want to. She did good with DC. i just wish she would step out of her comfort zone and DO SOMETHING. She does seem like the settle down type. Anyway, i hope she has a hit record….someday.

Thank you #13! That’s exactly the point I was trying to make on the other post about Kelly referring to Beyonce in that magazine article. Well said!

And Brian, referring to Mathew Knowles as “Beyonce’s tyrranical father” is a bit extreme, don’t you think? I mean, despite what people think of him or his management style, I think that’s a harsh way to describe him.

I am from Trenton, NJ and there is an up and coming group from here called JUS LOVE. The boys are hot and are about to get signed. I’m just warning you guys. Please support them!

On to other things, I can’t listen to the music b/c I’m at work. I was never a big Kelly fan, but I wish her the best of luck. Interested in hearing, “IN LOVE WITH MY EX” though.

I have heard almost all the songs on Kelly’s Album and I must say that I like it. I’m not even close to being a Kelly fan but I’m starting to like her. The album is not for people who like “Hype” songs. Her favorite artist is Sade and that says a lot. So if you don’t like Sade and the type of music she brings then you might not like Kelly’s album (Not at all like a Sade album but most of it is mellow). I think it’s good for people who like to groove. I also think that since most of her lyrics actually make sense, a lot of people won’t like it. (I feel like the people that buy music these days have very poor taste). Also Beyonce is known for making dance hits and loud vocals, if Kelly did the same thing you all and the world would say she was trying to copy Beyonce. Beyonce has really set herself apart so anyone who does anything close to her will be compared. That’s why even Rihanna is taking a different route. Beyonce is forcing people to come up with something new, b/c if they don’t they will either remain in her shadow or be called a follower.

I love Chrisette’s album. I bought it yesterday, and it’s really well done. Her voice…it’s almost like taking Erykah’s, Jill’s, Sarah Vaughn’s, and Billie Holiday’s voices and blending them into one. It still shocks me how much she looks like a younger Jill Scott too. So nice, so smooth. It’s great to hear music that has a great message and is also nice to listen to.

As far as Kelly goes,
She was always my favorite in DC. I’m torn when it comes to her. As a fan, I want her to show me the 100% superstar I know she can be. Everyone knows she’s talented, and that voice is beautiful. I just want to see her peak I guess. There’s apart of me that wants her to step into her own, find her own management, and really make it pop.

But on the other side of things, I think Kelly knows what she’s doing. I agree with #13. I think she likes where she’s at…and who could blame her? We all know that her DC days has left a nice nest egg in that bank account. She’s been able to make two albums, do movies, endorsements. She just might be content with the role she plays.

Sometimes we as fans just always want more and more and more…it’s never enough. I don’t know. We may all want her to shine (maybe more than Bey), but at the same time…think about it. How many artists do you know that have had the level of success that she’s had…without really doing much other than playing the best supporter she can? Kelly’s comfortable with the silver medal. And no matter how much I want her to go for the gold, I can’t really hate. She has a lot more than a lot of the females out there.

Maybe one day we’ll see all she has to offer. Until then this “Ms. Kelly” album is not a bad look.

64.

I just don’t think Kelly has what it takes to be a solo success. Plus she definitely needs new management. Futhermore, they could have done a better job with the CD cover photo.

Lady Elle

Wednesday, June 20, 2007 /

I have to agree with number 13… Kelly does seem like she whether be married and have kids right now than putting out another album. Let’s face it, she’s set for life and she’s probably doing this just for fun. She said this morning on the radio (the Donnie Simpson Show); that on the first album she was scared but this time around she didn’t care (basically she just did her). I mean what more can you ask for? Either you like it or you don’t; either way, I will buy. People always say Kelly is the under dog and are upset because she is still with Papa Knowles. Why try to keep her down. Support her! Bottom line you all want her to be like B and she’s not, she’s Kelly. Therefore, her album and style is going to be different. And that’s what the public can’t handle.

I not sure if Kelly’s music will grow on me but I don’t think it will. Who ever produced those songs could have done better. As for Chrisette Michelle, I’m not feeling her songs just because I’m not into that kind of music (jazzy/neo-soul) but she does have a beautiful voice. In the pic…she looks like Ashanti to me.

Now, I’ll definitely be on the lookout for Kelly’s album…regardless of what ppl have to say about her, I’ve always enjoyed her vocals and style…GO KELLY!!!

BTW, if you go to amazon.com and look under music to Chrisette Michele, you can listen to samples of her album…

I like Chrissette’s voice,it’s beautiful and “jazzy”, I’ll definitely be getting it.

Bouga, I agree with you, Leela is slept on, her album is fire!

Kelly, you are pretty and I wish you much success but your album is missing something, production maybe, or you might need a couple of sessions with Betty Wright and her drumsticks. JMO

#13 Wow, I never thought about the situation like that with Miss Kelly. Maybe she really did prefer just being in a group. Well, either way I am feeling these tracks. I have heard them over and over and I like “Ghetto”, “Put It In”, “The Show”( I love Tank), “Like This” is okay…I liked it at first, but now I am over it, I like “Every Thought is You” ( Although that’s not up here, it is a very nice song). Regardless of how the songs are perceived, I must say Kelly’s vocal ability has grown so much. The girl can really sang. I think that is why ppl rag on her so much about her songs. The fact is the girl can sang better then most of these r-n-b chicks and ppl just feel she should have songs that accurately reflect this ability. THATS ALL…However, I think I am going to buy the album(I like Miss Kelly.
