Tony Thompson, the lead singer of 90′s group Hi-Five was found dead yesterday (June 1) in his hometown of Waco, Texas outside of an apartment complex around 10:00 pm.

The cause of death has not been confirmed, but sources say he died of a drug overdose.

ABOUT TONY:

Thompson and Hi-Five hit #1 with 1990′s “I Like The Way (The Kissing Game),” which was produced by R&B/Hip-Hop producer Teddy Riley and taken from the group’s debut, Hi-Five.

The album also produced singles like “I Can’t Wait Another Minute” and “I Just Can’t Handle It.”

Hi-Five broke up around 1994 but reunited and released a new album The Return in 2006 on Thompson’s record label N’Depth. READ MORE

I vaguely remember Thompson and the group Hi-Five, but I can see he had a number of fans with the number of emails we received. Condolences to his family and friends…

That is so sad. Gosh, I feel old I was in junior high when Hi-5 came out. I hope it wasn’t a drug overdose. Makes me think about that song by Jay and Be called “Hollywood.”

Real R&B fans know about this group, you know nothing about R&B if you don’t know your groups of the 90s!

  20. Aries

  26. ThinkAboutIt

High Five was nice and Kissing you was hot – Tony was always a cutie.

Pray for comfort and strength for his family and friends in dealing with his death.

  27. I am truly saddened to hear that this young, talented brother passed away at such a young age.He had so much more to accomplish in his short life.He was a great singer and very handsome it’s a damn shame R.I.P Tony.I always did like Hi-Five back in the days that was my group.

  28. Damn…this is 2 sad. I used to LOOOOOVE Hi-5 and I still have one of their tapes (yes TAPE, lol). They had some really good music and all of the girls went crazy over Tony being that he was the lead singer and a cutie. If he died of a drug overdose, that’s truly an unfortunate tradegy!

    I have forever been a Hi-Five fan.
I can remember covering my walls with Tony and Hi-Five posters that I would get out of Black Beat or Right On magazines.

Hi-Five was one of the first cassettes that I purchased with my own money. During middle school it STAYED FIXED in my headphone set and was with me everywhere I went! As the group changed, I remained “Faithful” and still loved every song and every CD.
I especially loved Tony as a solo artist, his voice, his style, and still maintained that crush I developed in middle school.

None of us are immune to death.
It is rarely planned for and seldom easy to get used to.
Lately I’ve been getting reminders of this, if it be those I’ve known personally or examples like Tony.

I guess one starts to feel they really know the artist.
And we do get a glimpse into their souls, probably through one of the best ways, through the MUSIC.

And that’s what’s so great, the music will always be here.
    Memories never go away.
Tony’s heart and soul will live on through his music and continue to grow through a new generation that I am sure will come to discover him…..like Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, or Dino……
    The Songs Live On!!!!!

  39. Solstarr

Hi Five was my group!!! I am so saddened by this. A few years back another member got locked up for murder. Does anyone remember that?

  40. calmsensual1

    @39…uncalled for.

  41. Ashanti

This is partially true. The Tony Thompson you’re speaking of was a Black session drummer who was part of 70s disco act Chic (Le Freak, Good Times) and Power Station (a 80s rock act w/Robert Palmer and Duran Duran). He died a few years ago.

    RIP

  54. GiGi

This is so unfortunate to hear. My prayers go out to his family and friends for healing and comfort. RIP

  55. NantanYah

I’m so sorry to hear this. I just went out and bought all of their cd’s a couple of months ago. My sister and brother and I would tape the videos and sing their songs all day long back in the 90′s. Tony had a very beautiful voice. I hated the last video they made in ’05 for this song “10 toes up”, but atleast they tried to make a come back. I was and will always remain a huge fan. Drugs are just not worth it:(

  56. C.R.E.A.M.

This is so weird cause I was watching their video on youtube the other night. I was singing “She Playin Hard To Get” and I was like I really wanna hear that song so I downloaded it. Anyway that dude could really sing his voice was real original. RIP to him and best wishes to his family.

  57. fungirl79
