You may remember Janelle Monáe from OutKast’s acclaimed “Idlewild” album, or her appearance in the “Morris Brown” video alongside Big Boi, or even her two features on Big Boi’s Purple Ribbon All Star’s “Got Purp” compilation, but this past weekend, Monáe had two parties for fans to come out and preview her debut album, “Metropolis: Suite I of IV: The Chase” (due out August) and a special live performance in downtown Atlanta. Both houses were packed, as people traded their tickets in for copies of her debut single, “Violet Stars Happy Hunting.” Not only was this an introduction to the new material on Ms. Monáe’s album, it was also the unveiling of a new label, the Wondaland Arts Society, on which Monáe will be releasing her debut. Check out more some pictures from the party and her performance.

#58 i apologize to the board.. i was just moved in a negative direction lol.. i still pepper my convo heavily with n’s and b’s… but i should not have offended ya’ll lol. i so humbly offer a serious apology..
i just get so tired of all us brothers and sisters being placed into these plastic boxes where there is no room for art.. for arts sake.. many talented black folk have been passed over because of the oversaturation of this pop “ish”.. or our unwillingness to give props to anything other than what the masses are doing.. we have become such followers.. i mean why is kelis larger in Europe.. how come many black folk have never heard of “skin” form skunk anansie.. YA’LL ARE MISSING OUT..

We cool carolspeedj! You have great passion and deep thoughts! Don’t let the pressure build up inside! It’s good to vent every now and then and let some steam off! Things run better when they are properly filtered and exhausted!

Black artist are large anywhere the English language is spoken! Isn’t it amazing that one of the very things that we were stripped of, is the thing that other cultures now long for! We were forbidden to speak our native language and learn the King’s English, now it’s the dominant language in the civilized world!

Even though we sellout and get passed over, Black Americans are still much better off than 95% of humanity throughout the world! Take a positive note from this and be deliberate in your stride! Play the game on the positive side and remember that God is planning your days, months and years!

Thanks for coming back and showing me the real you!!

    I LUV HER!!!
originality is the world’s best friend

btw i don’t think she sounds old-fashioned like someone else stated and i don’t consider her to be punk rock unless you want to call it punk rock with a soul twist but blink 182 is punk, not her. she is more indie, not sure which genre under indie i would put her with though

  6. EXPAND YOUR MINDS DAMMIT!!!!

I’m sorry but #58 is on point!!! Black people are not being as supportive when it comes to black musicians who are trying to change something, why do we as people have to be defined to just one genre? and why do we have to emulate it??? Like 58 (carolspeed j said) no one’s prolly heard of stiffed, or santi white, and then I’m sure that you guys have never heard georgia anne muldrow… people need to expand their damn minds, If you guys find Rihanna’s music listenable then I’m sure you’ll find this chick listenable too. (Yeah i know, listenable is not a word, but u get my point)

Love her . Love her. Love her.

Fall everyone who doesn’t get her stuff, try listening to some funk. Parliament set up that “future” schtick almost 3 decades ago.

I love Janelle Monae. Her voice is one of the best I have heard and her personality is fresh and unique. She deserves the spotlight but then again, she’s one of those artists that you hear about and they are great so you want to keep them to yourself, before everybody else hops on the bandwagon.
