Rihanna was spotted getting her shop on in Soho yesterday with a couple of her friends. Rihanna and her homegirls stopped by the Betsey Johnson, BCBG Max Azria and Chanel stores.
The 19-year-old singer was featured in the current issue of EW magazine and spoke on the haters in her hometown. Here’s a snippet:
What’s it like when you go back to visit Barbados these days? Do you still have a lot of friends there? Are people mostly happy for you or do you get hated on a lot?
A lot of them hate me, but a lot of them love me. I don’t really let the ones that hate me stop me from doing what I wanna do. They always have something to say about what I’m wearing, what I’m not wearing, like in the ”Umbrella” video. If I wear a swimsuit to the beach, it’s a problem, they put it on the front of the newspaper and call into programs. It really annoys me when people that I try to represent and I try to put them on the map as much as I can — you know, I didn’t have to put Tridents in my videos.

Trident, which is the symbol of the flag. I didn’t have to talk about them. I didn’t have to even mention that I’m from Barbados. But I do and people kind of take it for granted. They hate me. They talk s— about me all the time. But I’m like, ”Whatever. I’m still doing this cause I love to do it and you’re not going to stop me.”

But was it really necessary for her to curse and talk about her country like that. Some of them may not like her, but that’s where your from, you don’t speak about you island like that. Hi all. First of all I am from Barbados and I’m shocked at Rihanna’s statement. The thing ppl need to understand is that Barbados is not very fussy about celebrities. We don’t care that much. Acting/singing or whatever is just another job. We don’t bombard ppl for autographs like a lot of ppl do in the states. We dont line up for hours to buy tickets to some concert.
We do however, acknowledge a job well done. Every acheivement of miss Robyn Rihanna Fenty has been lauded in our local press. We are all proud of her. Not because she is a Barbadian, because she is a young woman on a successful path. It’s sad… pathetic in fact, that she is trying to create false impressions for the American public all in the name of her “bad girl” image. I hope America is smarter than that.
