#64-I’m trying to figure out how Kelly would be back stabbing Beyonce by not talking about her during HER interview and HER album? Stabbing her and the Knowles family in the back would be writing a tell all book or telling everybody their business. Not wanting to talk about herself during her interview. Come on now.

I understand loyalty and respect for a friend, but you got to think of yourself too. She was in DC and she made that money. For her to remain in DC, she had to put in work too. If not, the Knowles would have kicked her out so quick and you can’t tell me otherwise. They would have found her another position as assistant or something. The majority of interviews that Kelly has done throughout her solo career have regrettably been related to Beyonce. I respect what she says and how much she supports Beyonce however I know for a fact that if she put as much effort, desire and loyalty in herself as she did her girl, she could be doing much better in sales and promoting her album.

It was left to her mother, Doris, to bring up Kelly, whose real name is Kelendria, and her older brother single-handedly.

“I remember around that time when my mother was being a nanny, and rehearsals were every day, and I missed two weeks of rehearsals because she was busy, and I was depressed.

Music was my life as a kid, so I remember she asked Beyonce’s parents, Tina and Matthew; she was like, “Kelly really wants this, and I want her to have it, is it all right if she comes to stay with you guys for a month?’ And a month turned into a year.”

Wasn’t it hard for both Kelly and her mother to be apart?

“It was OK, because it was almost like I felt God gave me two more parents, as it was hard for my mum to do everything by herself.

“But the blessing out of all this is that I gained a father “ that was a void that I felt was filled with Matthew.”

How often did she see her mother? “Every day, she came to the house every day, whether it was to cook something for me or give me a kiss goodnight.”

When the girls signed their first record contract aged 15, Matthew became their manager and Tina their stylist.

Does Kelly ever resent the pressure to succeed? Does she feel she was pushed? She shakes her head.

“I don’t let anybody put pressure on me. I put pressure on myself and I even try not to do that because what’s the pressure for?

“No one was forcing us to do anything, we were like, ‘We want a record deal, we want to sing.’

“I remember when we flew to Los Angeles to have a meeting with the record label, and they took us to a Janet Jackson concert; afterwards, we were going, ‘Look at this huge stage, look at these dancers, look at this amazing woman singing these amazing songs’, and we were crying because we wanted it so bad.

“My parents will call me, all three of them will call me, and say, ‘Where’s your head at today, are you feeling all right? Is there something I can do?’ They’re extremely supportive.”

I wonder if her perfectionism, her staggering work ethic, isn’t down to fear that she might, perhaps, turn out like her father?

That she might have inherited his addictive gene, if there is such a thing?

“Yeah. You know what, it happens, life happens, and we’re not always dealt the best of cards.

“But it’s how we continue to play the game, and how we continue to try to win. I just continue to try to win.”

She says the best thing about her success is being able to treat her mother; she recently took her on holiday to Jamaica.

Doris refuses to give up work, though. “She’s very proud.

“I talked to her last night before I went to bed and she said, ‘You sound tired, are you taking care of yourself?’

“She’s just a really cute Southern woman. She’s about 58 now “ she likes it when I lose count. She’s still very beautiful.”

They are very close. When I ask Kelly whether, like most young, hardworking stars, she resents always missing birthdays and Christmases and Thanksgivings because of her relentless schedule, she looks at me as if I’m mad.

“I never do that. I never miss Mother’s Day, which is when I like to be with my mums plural.

“I have only ever missed Easter with my mum, which I felt sorry about, but Easter really isn’t that big a deal, is it?’ And she looks worried.

I also wonder whether her mother’s experience might have put her off men, and she laughs.

“I’ve been in relationships where I’ve been hurt and I don’t want to be there any more, you’re just kind of walking on eggshells thinking, ‘What are you going to do to disappoint me?’

“I’m dating right now and it’s no one in particular.

“I talk about love on the [new] record, but I also talk about being comfortable in my own skin and being by myself.”

She has been engaged, to an American football player called Roy Williams, but called it off two years ago because she felt she was too young; she is 26 now.

Are they still friends? “We see each other out sometimesit’s not like we’re best friends or anything like that.

“He’s really a nice guy, just not the guy for me.’”

Her best friends remain Beyonce and Michelle. “I live in Miami in a lovely high-rise with a view of the ocean; Beyonce lives in New York and Michelle is in Chicago, but we still talk on the phone every day.

“We support each other from afar.” She misses being with them every day, though “ the hardest part of going solo.

“It is very weird, and very quiet! I miss the girls, and I especially miss Beyonce’s mess!” she says, creasing up with laughter.

“Beyonce’s a Virgo but she’s so not tidy! It drove me nuts.

“Michelle’s not tidy either, so I would actually get on their nerves because I was picking up everything, I was like, ‘Come on, honey, your shoes; put them in this corner of the bus.’ I’m a neat freak.”

I am surprised, though, when she says she hasn’t yet managed to see Beyonce’s Oscar-winning film Dreamgirls, based on the infighting and rivalry between Diana Ross and the other Supremes.

That is not very supportive, surely? “I was supposed to see it but Beyonce whisked me away on holiday.”

Was she ever jealous that Beyonce got all the attention, despite the fact that Kelly’s first solo album, released in 2003, spawned two number-one singles?

“I didn’t feel like I was strong enough to be a leader at that time. And Beyonce was, she carried the torch.

“It takes a special person to be able to do that, and I appreciate her for it.

“Women don’t have to bash each other in order to feel greater than the next woman.

“I just talked to Beyonce yesterday, everything is still very fluent with us, we’re sisters.

Thank God for family and friends. I always call it my three, no actually it’s my four, Fs: my faith, my family, my friends, and the fans.
