Someone said that there is an increase in eating disorders among young women? Please post the stats for the black community, because I surely don’t see it. What I see on a daily basis is the exact opposite. Obese and sloppy women walking around. Women defending to the death, why they can/will/and want to be big and fat. I guess until we as men start demanding women to watch their weight and start rejecting fat women as a whole, then and only then will Black women start doing this.

Again, Raven has a very pretty face, but she was too young to be that overweight. When you don’t feed your body enough and do that too much, too often, and for a long period of time, that body ends up rebelling and stocking, taking the weight back, that’s the yoyo thing, until that body can’t take no more and doesn’t lose a thing no matter how much you starve yourself. When I was a teen I had a professor who was as fat as Missy Elliott used to be, she used to be a model and had been dieting since age 13 (parents encourage that cause they’re misinformed, you should NEVER put a child on a diet), once she stopped modeling (starving herself), she “exploded” and never lost the weight. And a lot of those fat people are in denial, living unhealthy ain’t a life. I think what pisses people off are the two words “diet programs”, just eat healthy, diets lead to “yo-yoing” and kill health. Obesity is as unhealthy as anorexia, I don’t believe Mo’Nique or Cedric “representing for the big sexy” The Entertainer are content with their situation at all.

All my friends played video games as kids, but we also played basketball, football, figthing …anything outside. Black men as a whole are active. I’ve been working out religiously for years and Black men are always the majority in the gym. Yes obesity/diet and excerise are problems within our community but the women are terribly behind. With women like Monique giving sistas props for being fat and lazy there will never be change.

I think that is because majority of black men prefer there women to be slightly overweight. If you notice within the black community the women who get the most praise for their body shape is not model thin. Yes, black women do need to take better care of their health. However, who should black women model their ideal weight after? Is the real question. Black Americans is extremely diverse group of people racially and physically in terms of only body types. Overall, their is no perfect weight average for people of any race.
If a person feels they need to lose weight do to health issues then do so. But if they are trying to lose the weight for some fake set of standards set by a white ruling majority then they will fail. Monique is not promoting black women to be fat and lazy she is saying just be happy with who you are. The only thing that pisses me off though is people that imply the average black women is suppose to be fat and Jemima looking. Mostly people who imply that are non-black.

I agree with you a little. And if you reread my post you’ll notice I took a jab at people who imply that the average black women is meant to only look like Aunt Jemima. I’ve meet people who truly believe Monique is the standard for how blacks really look. Truth is the black race comes is so many shapes and colors we can take on many forms (From a racial standpoint). I like Monique and thinks she stands up for the black women who is put down everyday about being not rail thin. However, she does take the negativity about her thinner black sisters to far sometimes. Not every thin black women on planet earth hates her thicker sisters.

The issue with the unhealthy issues in the black community is a problem. However, on average every American at this point black, white, Asian etc..Is suffering from overeating issues. A study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism states that African Americans have greater bone density, larger body frames and greater muscle mass than their white counterparts.
