You know, I respect George Clooney & Bono
They have been putting it down for a LONG time (before it was fashionable) in Africa.
Read this Interview that George Clooney did on the 700 Club.
George Clooney: Rallying for Africa
CBN.com – Earlier today, Pat Robertson spoke to one of the leaders of the “One” campaign, the famous actor George Clooney. During the interview, Clooney told Robertson why he and others are so concerned with helping the world’s poorest people.
PAT ROBERTSON: George, have you had a chance to interact with the delegates, and what are they telling you?
GEORGE CLOONEY: We went down and just met with a bunch of the delegates a few minutes ago, and it’s been a pretty interesting thing. They are getting a lot of signatures. It is a wide range of people there from virtually all over the country and all over the world. One of their main objectives is getting signatures and people to text message in and show their support. There seems to be a beautiful ground swell of support for this.
ROBERTSON: The G8 finance ministers were on board for $40 billion in debt relief. Is that going to follow through? Will they implement things like that ?
CLOONEY: They seem to be saying they will do it and include more debt relief later if the countries that are involved show responsibility and show transparency and lack of corruption. The questions now are how much financial aid can we get? And President Bush had actually a very nice speech he made last week, I am sure you saw, about how he wants to work trade. So I feel like we’re moving in the right direction. We have a lot of things going the right way.
ROBERTSON: You had an initiative to emphasize corruption and clean up corruption. Tell me what you are doing about that.
CLOONEY: It is going to be a difficult task as you know because there is so much of it. The trick is — and you have been involved there so much longer than any of us, so you know better than any of us — but the job we now have is to hold people responsibility, so that the money we send doesn’t buy a jet plane for a corrupt leader. We failed at that before as we have given aid. It’s somewhat our fault — we trusted people maybe we shouldn’t have. But the situation now is much different. And I think we have learned from our mistakes. I hope we have.
ROBERTSON: The number they are talking about is $50 billion. Blair is coming through with a lot. Is the U.S. doing enough?
CLOONEY: I don’t think they are there yet. I think it’s going to be a long time before we’re able to… The number they set it for was $50 billion by the year 2010. The United States is coming through three times what they were of the past administrations, so they have done a good job. They have funded Bush’s AIDS program before. But the question is, are we going to reach it? We hope the French, we hope the Germans — everyone — is going to come on board with us because the goal should be higher that. But that is our main goal, trying to get it to $50 billion in 2010.
ROBERTSON: Personally, how come you are involved in this? I know you have a heart of compassion for the poor, but what touched you on this one?
CLOONEY: Well, you and I talked about this on the phone sometime ago, Dr. Robertson, and I think we agreed there were no two sides to the issue. There was only one side no matter where you stood politically or ideologically. Sorry, there are people yelling in the background there. But the truth is, there are no two sides to ending poverty or AIDS or starvation and genocide, there is only one. If we are not involved, where do we stand at the end of all of this? This seems to be the only moral issue to be involved in.
ROBERTSON: The tragedy of those orphans in Africa, 12 million orphans and maybe going to 20 million in the next few years, it is a human tragedy of mammoth proportions. Do the delegates get it, the ones you are talking to?
CLOONEY: I think they get it. You know, I think honestly, the truth is, the eight leaders of these nations want to do this. I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t want to be able to say they helped to end poverty. But in the end of the day they need us to support them and give them the mandate. You did that so beautifully. I hope you can keep the pressure up, as we will to try it get everyone to see there is nothing more urgent than this.
ROBERTSON: The G8 is a place to crystallize this, but what happens after this? What is the follow up that you see in America and across the world?
CLOONEY: Well, it is like you said. The G8 is just a moment and a start really. This is a place we can begin. The rest of the place is finding way to keep aware keep things alive. There are certain stops. There’s one in September, there’s certain moments that we can try — like with the World Trade Organization — that we can try to make further steps. But our big job, yours and mine is to try to keep people aware of this, and keep it on the tips their tongues because we don’t want it to fade away.
ROBERTSON: It is a great initiative. By the way, I understand the Hyde Park concert was a big event in Britain, 250,000 people. Did you have a chance to get to it?
CLOONEY: I didn’t get to it. I had back surgery myself, so I didn’t quite make it there. I heard Philadelphia was about million people which is the biggest ever. It was quite a turn out…The interesting thing is of course is that a great many people are there to see a rock concert and don’t know what the G8 is. But our job now is what we are doing, and hopefully what we are succeeding at is explaining what the G8 is, and talking about corruption, and talking responsibility, and talking about taking care of others who can’t take care of themselves.
ROBERTSON: Last question, behind you is some noise. Is that a demonstration in favor ending poverty or ending the G8? What are they demonstrating for?
CLOONEY: I am not quite sure. I think they just - was it London? I think they just found out that London got the Olympics, and that’s why they are cheering.
ROBERTSON: London got the Olympics?
CLOONEY: It just happened while I was standing here.
ROBERTSON: Oh, boy. Okay.
CLOONEY: You know how I know - half of the Brits standing around operating the camera are dancing.
ROBERTSON: So that’s it, I guess New York and other cities are disappointed but anyhow. George, it is great to have you with us. Thank you for being with me on “The 700 Club.”
CLOONEY: Dr. Robertson, thank you for everything you are doing.
ROBERTSON: It’s my great pleasure.

THERE IS NO NEED
Wednesday, June 6, 2007 /
I loved and respect every entertainer and celebrity who has supported Africa in volunteering their time and giving financially, however I can’t help but wonder why people won’t do the same for this country. We go people dying from AIDS and other diseases right here in this land and yet there is limited funding and medical needs. We also have a demand of people in need just like Africa as starving children, orphans, destructive communities and etc.
I’m not knocking what they do…if I was rich like them, I’d be volunteering and signing checks too and use my fame to help others in Africa, China, Brazil and many other locations. I hope God continues to bless them so they can be a blessing to someone else. Yet I can’t help but wonder why can’t we sweep around our own back door.
Just a though.

@Bill I think Vanity Fair has a new group of young features editors that are making moves.
I will be getting EVERY cover except Bush & Condi. They are 2 of the most corrupt political officials EVER. I put BOTH of them inline with the most corrupt & murderous dictators EVER & a Man who made a living terrorizing his country & his people until he was hunted down like a dog, Pablo Escobar. YEAH it’s that serious for me. IMO he should be impeached for lying to the American Public NUMEROUS times & then he should be tried for Murder for each one of the US Military Personnel murdered in Iraq & Afghanistan. For those of you who think Condi is better remember she sat before the 911 commission & LIED through her gap!! Watch it read the transcripts know the FACTS!!!
Everyone else these covers will be collectors items & I have always been a HUGE fan of U2 & Bono & the work that He, George, Clooney, & Brad Pitt do is amazing.
Go Queens Oprah & Iman. Looking fabolous as usual.

I remember when the Liberians were stacking bodies in front of the US embassy, asking for our help, and bush gon’ send 8 marines……8 MARINES! thats a slap in the face. Not to mention that the bush administration only offers funds to AIDS groups in Africa that only teach abstinence. Abstinence is great and all, but if bush thinks these groups are the ones that are gonna hault the spread of AIDS, then he has been sniffin some fairy dust.

This whole “Save Africa” or “Save Darfur” movement is so contrived, lol. Other than Ali, none of these people really give a damn about anything other than themselves. He’s a holdover from a previous era when black men stood for something. The governemnt poisoned the brother and now they “celebrate” him to throw off what they did. Unfortunately, brothers like him have softened with time because they realized that the Nation of Islam was built on mythology mixed with elements of the truth.
If Europeans and caucasian Americans were really as concerned about the Africans as they act, then the solution is easy. Leave the Africans alone, leave their natural resources alone. Stop sending CIA agents into Africa to stage coups and unbalance their respective governments. Stop stealing the African children and selling them into child sex trafficking rings across the earth to benefit companies like Halliburton. Stop lying about wanting to “help the impoverished” when you really want a pretext to invade these countries in order to steal more natural resources, which is all this “Save Darfur” stuff is about. People are starving all over the world. Why not a “Save the Aborigines” or “Save the Native Americans on the reservations”? Why is the white man all of a sudden so concerned about the Africans? It doesn’t make any damn sense (at least to me).
These celebrities are so obnoxious and corny. They’re useful to the government because they’re recognizable to the public while at the same time being stupid as hell. I’m willing to bet that all the black women on these covers will either be lesbians or with the white man. The black men, other than Ali, will probably all be on the down low. Bono is in favor of globalization and population control. He’s a frontman: http://www.prisonplanet.c...august2006/080806bono.htm.
All that “love Africa” stuff is an act. You can’t work with or for Bush or Tony Blair unless you cosign on their plans. That man that Clooney interviewed with, Pat Robertson, is Illuminati. What better ambassador to use if you want to make the world think that you care when you really don’t than an actor. That whole Angelina Jolie/Brad Pitt adopt-a-child charade is a three ring circus.

Oprah, Bill and Condi are “Johnny come Lately”! Where’s Mutombo and Menute Bol? Let’s talk about the folks who been giving all their lives and who have given everything! Where’s Mother Teresa and Toby?

A great cover! Sometimes we need to remember that there are more pressing issues in the world than Paris Hilton going to jail. Kudos to Vanity Fair! Also, they need to put more African Americans on the cover, not just for one issue every 20 years!!!

I hear what your saying but this country is already overindulgent as it is. Of course we have our issues of poverty, AIDS and crime but our problems here fade in comparison to what’s going on in certain countries in Africa. While we are able to drive to any local store and BUY our water (even when we are able to retrieve it from our kitchen faucets), some people in Africa must use the same water to drink that they (and other animals) bathe in. Believe me when I say, America is spoiled rotten.
Oh … and Bush is just trying to make everyone forget about the fact that “his” war was a mistake.

HE ALSO WAS RESPONSIBLE THE WORLD EIGHT CONCERT ABOUT TWO YEARS. WHEN THERE EIGHT WORLD CONCERTS IN EIGHT COUNTRIES THAT BROADCASTED ALL OVER THE WORLD TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR AIDS AND POVERTY. HE ASLO STARTED THE RED CAMPAIGN WITH THE GAP. SO MUCH LUV TO HIM AND ALL HIS EFFORTS.

This is such a good look for VANITY FAIR. Especially with it being about Africa. Feels so close to home for me; can’t wait to go back and visit. You know what, all these artists are so so amazing and they have such great hearts, but Bono is just incredible. He’s a caucasian man who spends all his time going to Africa and helping out, for those who don’t know him . And he doesn’t do ANY of it for media-none of it. I love Bono, and Africa loves him too. I think it was the NAACP, where he was honored and he said this speech, and I was so touched by it. It sounded like a preach and EVERYBODY stood up and clapped afterwards because he was just so spiritual and he spoke from his heart about Africa and what God is doing with that continent. God bless his heart- God bless all their hearts. I’ll definately be picking up this issue.

Nobody can fuck with Jay.

leaave africa alone
Thursday, June 7, 2007 /
I agree with Judah (#79)…if people really want to help us they should leave us alone! This is such a joke! The reason why ‘Africa’ never developed to begin with was that these ‘first world’ nations stole our resources and today they are still doing it through ‘neo-colonialism.’ How can you want to help us when you are still robbing us? Big thanks to all the celebrities who are making a difference in ‘Africa’ but to be quite frank why do they have to tell the whole world that they are doing it, if they are doing it for the love of people why dont they do it on the down low? They might be ‘giving us water e.t.c.’ but they are doing nothing for our self-esteems, thats right, because in the eyes of the world Africans are just poor, illiterate, corrupt fools who need to be ‘taken care of.’ Yes, you have made us charity cases and that is never a good thing to be. No country in Africa is poor, we have so many resources. Dont give us your money or ‘free trade’ or whatever’ but give us ‘fair trade.’ Take your big companies and your ‘peace corps’ or whatever they are called and your ‘policies to help us’ and get out of our countries. Give us a fair chance and we will help ourselves and you dont have to worry about parting with your money. That is all.

3.2 million = the number of Africans estimated to have died this ”YEAR” related to the various conflicts in Africa.
6.8 million = the number of Africans estimated to have died in all the conflicts that Vanity Fair made reference to when they promoted this issue.
Don’t quite get the ”Lisa” reference. But hey, I’m happy you can add. Shows that the ”No child left behind” programs really do work.

He should not only be impeached but he should be….I ain’t even going there on the internet b/c I don’t want to get in trouble for my statements so I will hush on that one. But there are plenty of thoughts in my mind that I think we should do to Bush. Everyone who voted for Bush are dumb as hell. I guess now they see they made a mistake. These celebrities are so obnoxious and corny. They’re useful to the government because they’re recognizable to the public while at the same time being stupid as hell. I’m willing to bet that all the black women on these covers will either be lesbians or with the white man. The black men, other than Ali, will probably all be on the down low.
______________________________________________________
Was all that seriously neccessary. You sound like a bitter person. Do you live in Africa? If so, what have you done to change the problems that engulfs the African communities? You said you know the solution, why not go forth with the plan then? I mean brother you preaching all this stuff about how people are fake and phony, obnoxious and greedy (which I agree to an extent), but I dont see you doing nothing about it. Its not always These big companies fault. If Africans knew they have all these resources, they wouldnt be so f-ed up now. Instead most chose to be greedy just to make money, not really knowing they were being tricked and bamboozeld before their motherlovin’ eyes. You damn right Africa dont need our help but they’re not smart enough yet to realize how good they have it.So they need the celebrities intervention and money to have some type of relief.
PS, I love the Vanity Covers except the ones with GB and CR.

Vanity Fair cover have always been pretty nice and powerful. The cover they had during the oscar awards with the nominees, I bought that magazine because of the cover and it was actually a good issue. Whoever taking these photos for Vanity Fair need to be working for Essence and the other magazines because their covers are horrible now. Fanity fair and Bono did their thing for real. I love it. Bono and Alicia Key Oprah, Chris Rock, and Chris Tucker have been talking about trouble in Africa for years, now they getting it out there more, that we need to help our people in africa and spread the word. Publicity or not, these celebrities are doing good by do these covers and helping Africa.

And what is with you and accusing Black women of being lesbians? In almost all of your comments you’re dissing Black women, calling us lesbians or whores or greedy, damn! You must be a very bitter person.

#114 Zaria ~ LMAOOO, you really told Judah! I hope he’s taking heed! Judah is a male chauvinist and racist!! His cult, “the Nation” considers women to be their servants and toilet when they need to dump stress!
Black women are beautiful, but many black men have not been taught to respect and appreciate them! They don’t know how to be a gentleman!
Just keep it short with him and you’ll be okay, because he will write you a novel, now that you have exposed more of his method of operation!

8. Sorry…Condi is a HAM in her pic with Bono. she should have just kept her normal tight-lipped expression. not tried to pose.
9. And then there was G.W. smh. doesn’t he look like he doesn’t understand a word Condi saying to him. “it’s new-cle-er, George. Not nuke-u-lar!” smh.

I’m guessing I’ll be in the very small minority on this one, but aren’t we kinda tired of white celebrities (and some Black ones) exploiting Africa’s plight for publicity. I dunno. It just seems that if you are really sincere about your charitable deeds, you don’t need to appear on the cover of Vanity Fair for it. Do what you do b/c you love doing it. Seems like everytime I see some of these folks, they talkin bout what they doin in Africa. And it’s all the same stuff. They all talk about charity but how many of them have looked into investment loans and groups. You know, things that can make poor Africans TOTALLY INDEPENDENT of all foreign help? I guess that doesn’t appeal to them.
And the fact that GWB and Condi are on a cover just shows what a joke this is. Bush freaking called Africa COUNTRY for God’s sake!
