I think that the video could have had more to it. I expected much more but what can you say when the girl is appearing on every channel, radio station, and summer tour in and out the country. I’m not a Rihanna fan but the girl is doing her thing. It seems like they only had a day or so to do the video and it was kind of rushed.

I actually picked up her cd and it isn’t bad. This isn’t one of my favorite songs on the cd but I do listen to rock music and the beat isn’t hard to bare to listen to. Let’s be honest a lot of people in the industry these days cant hold a tune nor has a trained ear. Majority of singers and rappers have a nice beat to cover them. I think the “influence” of rock symbolism on today’s rap really started in about 2003 when the industry started to make the artists wear tighter clothes and skull and crossbones belt buckles. The hood bit hook, line, and sinker, so they moved on to the skull or skull and crossbones shirts, pants, sneakers, etc. Now they’re trying to bring it home with the new/strange, forced rock/hip-hop collaborations.

Back in the early-mid 90’s rap cats were comin’ so hard that you couldn’t have a collaboration with rock even if you wanted one. Notice how all the rappers are slowly going from throwing up fake gang signs in the pictures to the rocker Satan horns. That’s why Jay-Z signed off on the video. He really doesn’t have a choice, he’s taken an oath and he’s down with them.

Only a handful of artists with large fan bases can actually push album units today. Country fans are the best at actually buying albums. Rihanna is a label creation, not self-made, and people can actually feel that instinctually. She’s not going to connect on a level like some of the greats. It’s cool. She should just ride the wave as long as she can and enjoy it.

Def Jam gave Rihanna the career Fefe Dobson could have had if she were cuter and more inclined to singing and gyrating along to pop-rock. GGGB is a pretty solid album, but that’s about it–there’s no soul to it. Even at her most bizarre, Gwen Stefani’s music still has more depth and soul. I’ll pass on this and go listen to The Donnas, Blondie or The Go-Gos if I want some New Wave rock.
