I agree that we need to be mindful of the names that we give our children, because I work in HR in coporate America. I have a very regular name…Stephanie. That actually means very little in this world once you get here. The real discrimination has nothing to do with your name.

I truly see nothing wrong with the names Latoya, Latonya, LaShonda, Ebony, Cierra, Tanisha or Keisha. I think we have to be careful not to feed into the theories that everything that “we” do that is not mainstream is bad. Hispanics suffer from the name discrimination, too. Their names are dead give-aways for their ethnicity, yet you do not hear them blasting each other for maintaining their difference as a group.

Again, we do not need to name out children mess like Latrine, Shaniqua, Orangejello and Lemonjello ( yes those are real names), but we can still be different and make the mainstream respect our difference. A

What some of you need to read is the research that was done on certain black sounding names such as Ebony, Latonya and Keisha. According to the research Latonyas and Ebonys were likely to get call-backs from their resumes faster than any ethnic or white name.
