So I’m pretty sure you all have heard the controversy around BET’s upcoming show “Hot Ghetto Mess”, based off the popular website of the same name. Earlier this week, it was reported that sponsors were starting to pull out following a boycott from the blog whataboutourdaughters against any of the advertisers who ran during the show. (READ MORE)
“Hot Ghetto Mess” combines viewer-submitted home videos and BET-produced street interviews that the channel said in a press release are intended to challenge and inspire “viewers to improve themselves and their communities.” Yet many people can’t even understand why BET would want to air such when they run stereotypical images of African Americans on the regular everyday…
For example, one of the videos the show is licensed to run according to Fresh, is this bootyshaking contest from Jump Off TV after the cut…*NSFW*
Indeed this is a hot mess, but is BET also a hot mess for planning to run it?
Nevertheless, BET says this show’s purpose is to raise questions about the state of Black folks as a whole – just as the concept of the website. But people can’t help to wonder about BET’s true intentions…what is your opinion on the whole situation concerning the show?

This is going to be broadcasted all over the world and if people already think that all black americans are ignorant, loud, and GHETTO – they definitely will have some valid proof. BET already has crazy-ass Spring Bling and other shows I don’t feel like mentioning. They need to rethink this one and come up with a better conclusion.

I agree with Angel. I think this show may do a great disservce to our community because many of the people outside of our community will watch and think that all Black people behave like this. It is not a far-fetched idea at all. I work in multi-ethnic environment and one day I had a conversation with a woman from India. She said when she came to the US she thought Black people were lazy, violent, and stupid because those were the images that were displayed in the media in her home country. Luckily, she didn’t let those images stop her from interacting with Blacks and finding out that people who fit those images in the media are actually in the minority. I don’t want to judge the show before it airs but I am nonetheless fearful of the impact it could have.

In defence of jump off TV this is not all that they represent. Jump off TV was basically a live platform for different entertainers, be they MCs, dancers or whoever to showcase their talents in a battle against other groups or people. These clips were part of their competitions that they ran and I think it is wrong for BET to take them out of context and use them as a representation of what the black community, in this case the black British community represent. I think that the name of the show alone is messed up and already adds negative connotations to the show and its message. We have shows like this in England, where funny clips from TV around the world are shown and commented on but it’s never in a derogatory or racial manner and if this was the kind of show BET was aiming for I think that they may land way off the mark with this.
