I am Freshman in college now (go to a mostly white school in Connecticut) and I met this one dark skinned Haitian there and I have learned so much about race from talking to him. The brother is fine and if I had a secret crush on him from day one (but I have a boyfriend). White and Asian girls go nuts over him…they all absolutely love him and are always trying to hook up with him. Black girls on the other hand (the ones I have talked to) don’t find him attractive because he is too dark (I swear one of them said that…another one said: “imagine how dark our kids would be…I would hate that!”. I couldn’ t stop shaking my head when I heard that. The guy did everything to get with one of the black girls the first month at school and no one would holla back. they made fun of his features, accent and so forth. Now that the white and asian girls are all over him and that he is dating a white girl, the black girls are all hating and talking about how he is a sellout.

I just don’t get us black people! What I also don’t get is how most of us prefer light-skin yet we hate on those of us who date and marry white people (which will result in us having light-skined kids). The people we have on TV that are considered beautiful by the mainstream are all mixed (halle berry comes to mind) and our men love them.

Anyway, I could go on and on about this issue because it makes me so sad and I am so ashamed that my brothers and sisters are still hung up on that color issue. White people see ALL OF US (whether we look like Halle or we look like Whoopy Goldberg) as BLACK. But we see and refer to another as “light skinned”, “dark skinned” “African looking”, “Mandingo” etc…what a shame!

I hear ya, but think about this. White and Black people have been steriotyping the Black man and his penis since forever. Black people have been so programed to think that their only value is to their sexual abilities. You are correct that we as women need to stop looking at the penis as the defining traite of a Black man. There are so many more wonderful levels to the Black man but unfortunately, the media and the government have been constant conspirators of sexualizing the Black race into, male and female. Just look at the movies that come out that are marketed towards the Black community. And, Black people just eat that shyt up without realizing that they have bought into the grand mind job. We truly believe that who we are is linked directly to how big our man’s penis is out how sexy the black woman can look in a video. It is really sad that I was thinking the same thing that so many people focussed on what he “appears” to have. To say that he is packing just on a photo alone is one more example of how this society thinks that the African man has a large penis. He might very well be but that is neither here nor there because the rest of us can only speculate. I was kind of mentioning that too when I said that Di will probably end up with someone who is not African-American because men like him are viewed as unattractive because of the color of his skin, whereas, women of other races will find him extremely exotic. That is not to say that other races of women don’t steriotype as well, but in my experience, Black American women usually don’t like extremely dark men let alone an African man born in Africa. In my travels I noticed that African men are the object of desire for many cultures other than in America. We hate our roots so much but when it comes to sex, well, sisters will lay it out there for a big …..!
And, another thing, Black men from other countries know a thing or two about us and our history, sometimes more so than we do of ourselves.

I have always found this man handsome and beautiful. And it has absolutely nothing to do with his body or skin color. I just love his presence, smile (especially in that janet jackson video) and his aura. he seems so polished, distinguished, kind, and gentle. I am light complexioned but to me if a man has a good ora then he can be the finest man in the world but not about his features. I personally find his African features to be so beautiful because ! chose to embrace what is beautiful about the African/Black culture. I refuse to believe what the media tries to tell us. We should know ourselves better than anyone no matter what shade of brown we come in. We just don’t know our value because we have been brainwashed to think we have to have long straight blond hair, thin facial features, and light eyes to be considered beautiful.

I saw Amistad about 2 years ago for the second time and I found his presence to be to be so awesome and it really did not have anything to do with his skin tone. He just has it! I really can’t put a finger on it eigther, he is just it!
