Kelly recently spoke to Essence magazine about her child-hood struggle with her image:
Kelly Rowland once wanted to look white. “It’s said that brown-skinned girls don’t sell magazines and that’s so sad,” the sexy songbird tells next month’s Essence. “I remember wishing I was more fair-skinned, but Tina Knowles, Beyoncé’s mom, would say, ‘Don’t you know how beautiful you are?’ She made me come into my brown beauty. I didn’t get it, but now I do. I am chocolate and beautiful and loving it.” [SOURCE]

I always thought that kelly was a beautiful girl. I understand what she is saying though because a lot of times (especially with black people) being fair-skinned was always thought of as more beautiful then brown or dark skinned people. Like a couple of posts were saying earlier, a person’s skin complexion is really stupid to debate about now. I’m glad that kelly has become confident in the way she looks. It’s sad to admit, but there are millions of young black girls internalizing inferiority complext due to their darker complexion, which is really sad. i’m glad she was able to rise above such a destructive post slavery mental illness that black folks continue to suffer from.
Some of us need to overstand that fair skin does not equate to beautiful. There are unattractive fair skin blacks, and unattractive browner skin blacks; as a matter of fact, there are unattractive people in all ethnic groups, and it’s sad that blacks with more of “masa’s” blood in them, due to the rape of so many black women in the Untied Snakes/AmeriKKK, these black folks think they are prettier or supperior than blacks who have less rapist blood in them.

I see where she talked about it. I just wanted to see if people would agree that this issue of skin color is so overdone by our own people. Although, it is something we cannot get away from becuase of what history has done to us. It is truly sad that the kinds of things that almost every Black person talkes about in an interview is issues within our own race, within our own skin. I just wish we could get past this among ourselves.

She is gorgeous. I’m glad someone like Kelly finally came out talking about what alot of darker young girls feel. I was where she was once and now I love my chocolate skin too. Kelly will help alot of girls realize they’re beautiful no matter what shade of brown their skin is.

My wish is also the same as yours, however, way to many of us suffer from Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS) mental illness, and we’ll never get pass this light skin black indoctrination that was engrained in us during slavery, and continues to be perpetuated by our own black people, until we “emancipate ourselves from mental slavery”, cuz no one but ourselves can free our minds.
Kelly looks beautiful, I really appreciate her honesty…I also went thru those same feelings she had especially in High School where all I would hear “boys” talk about was how much they would rather be wit a light skinned girl, mixed chic, Puerto rican..because they’re cuter, have nice hair etc. I couldn’t stand it cause most of the boys saying that were the same complexion as me! (talk about issues)..as I got older it didnt bother me as much unless I heard the phrase ” YOUR PRETTY TO BE DARK-SKINNED”!!! Now in my adult life I don’t let non-sense like that bother me..
In general I think it’s sad that some black people make dark-skinnned people feel bad about the way they look. I think that black people come in all beautiful shades. There are a lot of dark-skinned women who I think are extremely beautiful: Kenya Moore, Naomi Campbell ( even though I hate her attitude) Grace Jones, Alek Wek (the supermodel) Whoopi Goldberg, Madge Sinclair ( May she rest in peace) and a whole lot of other women.

I personally think that Grace Jones is really beautiful, she has an exotic look about her and her skin tone is flawless! What really kills me about the whole situation with women like Grace Jones and other dark-skinned women is that, all of their lives they probably got made fun of for their skin complexion and then when they date outside of their race they get criticized for not dating black men.
I have to say, I don’t think she is really that pretty. I believe we have the same skin tone. She’s prettier with her mouth closed. I think that’s because she smiles or something like she still wears braces. . .ionno.
