THE ROUND UP: BET’S ‘HOT MESS’ GETS A NEW NAME | JURY SELECTION FOR R.KELLY TRIAL | VIBE VIXEN TO FOLD

hgm.jpg

Looks like those who protested against BET’s “HOT GHETTO MESS” made some changes, name changes that is.

BET’s provocatively titled “Hot Ghetto Mess,” which drew sharp criticism and overshadowed the rest of the cable channel’s new schedule, is getting an upbeat new name. “We Got to Do Better” is the title the series will have when it debuts, BET spokeswoman Jeanine Liburd told The Associated Press on Monday.

“We’ve decided to change the name because we want to highlight the show’s real intent, which is to offer social commentary in a context that sparks dialogue, debate, and most importantly, change,” BET said in a statement. [READ MORE]

TRIAL FOR R.KELLY READY TO ROLL?

rvibe.jpg

SOHH got the lastest info on the R.Kelly trial. I actually thought they threw that thing out already. It’s been a long-ass time. Read on..

The jury selection process in the R. Kelly child pornography case is drawing near, as attorneys for both sides reportedly presented their jury questionnaires to a Chicago judge on Friday (July 20).

According to The Chicago Tribune, Kelly (born Robert Sylvester Kelly) was present during the brief morning hearing. Judge Vincent Gaughan set the next hearing date for tomorrow (July 25) where prosecutors and defense attorneys will present him with a combined questionnaire form to be filled out by potential jurors.

Assistant State Attorney Shauna Boliker called the pre-screening process “unique in CookCounty,” but necessary because of the high-profile nature of the case. [SOURCE]

BYE, BYE VIBE VIXEN. IT WAS FUN WHILE IT LASTED

byevv.jpg

Aww man, VIBE VIXEN was starting to grow on me! Why do all the magazines that cater to young, black, and successful females go down the drain?

Less than two weeks after being named CEO of Vibe Media Group, Steve Aaron announced Vibe would fold Vibe Vixen, the female counterpart to urban music and lifestyle magazine Vibe.

Vixen will cease as a regularly published title with the August/September issue and starting in the fourth quarter, the company will begin publishing Vixen as special issues focusing on urban culture themes. The company hasn’t determined the frequency for the specials, a company rep said. Vixen also will continue to maintain a Web site.

In a press release, Aaron said there would be “some” layoffs. The rep would not make executives available for further comment.

Vixen launched in February 2005 as a twice-a-year title with a circ of 425,000 (unaudited) and upped the frequency to six times this year. Pages for the first half of 2007 totaled 147, per Publishers Information Bureau.

  1. R. kelly will never go to jail. Let’s face it…

  2. WHYLAWDWHY

It’s still going to be A HOT GHETTO MESS! Just pull the plug already BET

  3. All I have to say about the “hot ghetto mess” show is that people are way too sensitive. We know what a hot ghetto mess is when we see it so they should have kept the name.

Anyway, Im not surprised Vibe Vixen is folding. I mean…who even bought it? I remember looking at it one time in the airport and never cared to see it again.

    Lame.

  4. jahlibeans

    HGM needed a name change!

Damn…R. just going to court? That was a long ass time ago! We know he aint going to jail!!!

And I feel bad for Vibe Vixen..

  5. It is a shame R. Kelly will NEVER go to jail. OH WELL

“A Hot Ghetto Mess” is EXACTLY what BET is.

  6. Dami

Man…HGM even if changed is HGM if they showing the same crappy stuff.

I could care less about the r.kelly trail. It probably dated back before I was born.

    Poor Vibe Vixen.

  7. **draws in breath to make comment…..then changes mind** No comment would be appropriate so I don’t have one!

  8. I loved reading Vibe Vixen. I had just recently got up on it. Oh well, gotta resort back to predominately white female mags… not really….

    R. Kelly is going to jail. His time to shine is up.

I will definately be watching HGM tonight!!!

  9. well it’s about damn time on that R.Kelly mess, although I know his ass won’t do any time…

  10. R Kelly…Go DIRECTLY to Jail. Do not pass Go…and do not collect 1 million dollars from those tired a** trapped in the closet snippets that you planned to bring back, SMH!!

Vibe Vixen Nooooo!! I Loved that mag!! Was wondering why I haven’t been able to steal it from my friend’s house…it’s because they haven’t been publishing it :( *crying*

  11. smh_in_atl

kelly’s freak ass going to jail. he on borrowed time. he’s talented but one sorry mofo

  12. Vee

    1. BET is a hot ghetto mess and that show needs to be off air PERIOD!
    2. Finally they’re doin SOMTHING about that whole R.Kelly thing,,,HE DID IT!
    3. First Suede now Vixen. Now I can really see that women are being hushed in the Hip Hop industry and they just want to see us as video hoes.

  13. Do The Pocketknife!

Hot Ghetto Mess needs MORE than a name change! If the material is still going to exploit black people and show the worst of us to the world than it needs to be banned all together! Unless they’re going to have a forum-style setup where they show the problem and find a solution, I don’t want to see it. And for those of you who like to separate yourselves from the type of stuff they will showing by saying “That doesn’t represent me” don’t be fools, It represents you to anyone watching.

    P.S. Send R. Kelly’s behind to jail.

  14. Do The Pocketknife!

    Also I will miss Vixen.

  15. Lette

Man R.Kelly aint neva gon to jail shit I mean how long has this trial been goin on?? foreva n although I saw the tape n thinks he’s guilty as a motha fucka he’s still been doin his thing n music so hey it is wat it is.

I’m glad BET changed the time of that show cuz the title is just another sterotypical black person image n as a black woman, I don’t like to be seen like that ya digg but although they did change the title I dont think the show will last along with the other ones,,,,shit BET is trying to compete wit MTV n it’s not cute

Too bad Vibe Vixen aint gon out anymore I liked that magazine

  16. Dame

R.Kelly I will believe it when I see it. Charlie Murphy looks crazy saying the new name. I liked Vibe Vixen

  17. BEAUTY

I liked Vibe Vixen too! R Kelly…no comment.

  18. ThinkAboutIt

Unless they change the content and format of the show, it will still be a Hot Mess.

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.

    BET HAS TO DO BETTER.

  19. They know that this show aint gone spark no personal debate. If they debate, Hill Harper, Steven A. Smith, and Al Sharpton would be the hosts.

  20. ThinkAboutIt

I am not surprised about Vibe Vixen, more that half of ALL print publications have declining readership, sales and circulation – Like everything else, technology is changing the game, so most print magazines targeted teens and young adults will be going online and mobile.

  21. bailey

I HOPE THEY MAKE AN EXAMPLE OUT OF R-KELLY’S ASS

SO MANY GROWN ASS MEN RUNNING AROUND PIMPIN OUT THIS YOUNG MISGUIDED FAST TAIL GIRLS-BUT AS AN ADULT WE SHOULD NOT PROFIT NOR CAPITALIZE OFF OF A CHILD’S IMMATURITY OR LACK OF BETTER JUDGEMENT.

JUST BECAUSE IT’S THERE FOR THE TAKEN DOESN’T JUSTIFY TAKEN IT-

IF JUSTICE ISN’T SERVED IN COURT, WE ALL KNOW THAT GOD HAS HIS OWN JUSTICE THAT SURPASSES MAN’S COURTS-AND R KELLY WON’T BE ABLE TO PAY HIS WAY OUT OF THAT

  22. Linwood

Seems to me the people objecting the loudest to Hot Ghetto Mess are the people who see themselves in it. Change the name all you want, but when you get through, the things that we see really are a hot mess. We know full well that we frequently see our own and say we got to do better. There’s no excuse for the way we present ourselves sometimes, and we can’t get mad when people latch on to the negative attention that we create. It’s not about exploiting or making fun. It’s simply holding up a mirror and saying look at the images we’re giving and how we’re perceived as a people. I’ve followed HotGhettoMess.com for years for its entertainment value, and I’m continually amazed at what some people think is the fire. We couldn’t possibly think all of this is okay. Most of the people crying foul haven’t even seen the first episode, nor have they seen the website. See it before you judge.

  23. WHEN DOES THIS SHOW AIR?? ISNT IT TONITE?

I NEVER EVEN SEEN VIBE VIXEN ON ANY NEWSSTANDS…SAD

  24. trayc

First, I love Concrete Loop, Great Site!!! I can understand everyone’s sensitivity to this show Hot Ghetto Mess. Its the same as that horrible show Country Fried Videos on CMT where “rednecks” act and do stupid things. Dress horrendously etc,act hillybilly , just giving us Southerners all around bad reputation for just being ignortant, or whatever. I enjoy seeing the fashions that people wear on the Hot Ghetto Mess website, its very entertaining. I think most of them look hilarous but would love to meet these people , just to see what kind a person would put on such a horrible mess.LOL However, what I think is worse is that website that has street fights, Ghetto something? I am not sure but that was very disturbing to me.

Keep up the great work. I visit Concrete Loop daily. I can’t wait for more P Diddy and Laurie updates.

  25. MissOpinionated

We got to do better an “Upbeat” title for the show… they aren’t serious. Not that I ever cared whether the show airs or not anyway but I’m guessing they really have hope that this will be ONE of their successful shows since none of the others ever happen to be outside of 106. I can’t wait to read the commentary after the first show premiers.

  26. j

Now explain to me the difference between the title Hot Ghetto Mess and We Got to Do Better. They both sound horrible and speak to stereotypes. Maybe its just me but the title We Got to Do Better sounds like it was used during the slave times to make sure we kept ourselves in line with master…”Awww yall stop messin up, We Got to Do Better than this cause Master won’t feed us if we don’t.” I don’t get it, BET knows exactly what it is doing by having this show on and they can try all they want to explain it in a different context, change its name or even change the time in which it is to be shown but there is one thing you can’t do and that’s fool us into believing that they care about what’s going on in the lives of Black folk. BET is about money because if they weren’t then they wouldn’t have created the vehicle in which Black people would make a fool of themselves in the first place! A spade is A spade and nothing else.

  27. natural mystique

F#ckery at it’s finest. These folks over at BET think they can pull the wool over people’s eyes by merely changing the f#cking name?
They really must take their viewers as fools. This is why I NEVER watch BET, and never will.

  28. Wow. R-Kelly is really going to have to answer to that one. I wonder how its going to go? Messing with the children is a BIG deal and should not be taken lightly. I just hope that R get a fair trial.

  29. Afrobella

RIP, Vibe Vixen. That really bums me out because I dreamed of freelancing for them some day. Seriously Angel, what IS it with magazines targeted to fashionable black females? The whole publishing industry is going through dramatic changes.

I’ve been mulling over what to say about Hot Ghetto Mess for a few weeks now… but I’m gonna wait until I actually SEE the show before I write about it. Did y’all see Charlie Murphy talking about it on 106th and Park this week? I suspect the worst, but I’m still waiting and trying to reserve judgment. It’s not easy with a title like that, on a channel like BET.

  30. LILMAMAGOTGAME

I was THISSSSS close to sending off my subscription money for Vibe Vixen. Thank God for small favors…

  31. ClickBang

HOT GHETTO MESS IS BAD…WE GOT TO DO BETTER, IS WORSE.
NOT ONLY IS IT COMPLETELY BAD ENGLISH, IT’S PLAYING UP THE IGNORANCE FACTOR OF OUR VOCABULARY…

THANK YOU BOB JOHNSON FOR SELLING THE B.E.T TO A WHITE OWNED COMPANY. HOW SLAVE OF YOU “NIGGA”, HOW SLAVE.

  32. aww man. i hate to see vibe vixen go…first honey, then suede, now vibe vixen. i’ll have to resort to essence again – not that it’s bad just not always what i’m looking for. ah well…luckily i just had a digital subscription for $2.99. very happy i didn’t pay full price!

  33. HGH – Name change or not we know what it is. Did they think people were just protesting over the name or the CONTENT?

Vibe Vixen – I am a subscriber, but I NEVER liked the magazine. It is paper thin & may have had 1 or 2 decent articles at the most. Definitely didn’t get the effort of Vibe or other mag’s.

    R. Kelly…won’t even go there.

  34. I don’t know why they changed the name of the show. Everything on BET is stereotypical anyway. Rkelly is like a safer Michael Jackson for some reason. And when are they gonna get a magazine for chics. Nevermind, all they do is make guys look gay as hell anyway.

  35. Mala

whilst admittedly not being the most pc woman that walks this earth owning to a penchant for cursing and a prediliction for laughing at just about anything, i still have wholeheartedly banned B.E.T. from my life.
    period.
    full stop.
    nuff said.

  36. let’s see if robert get’s a paris deal…

never read vibe vixen but whoever took their pictures was fantastic

Barely Entertaining Television officially SUCKS. every show they have seems like it was recorded with a home camcorder. bob johnson, how can you stand by and see the legacy you created go down the toilet?

  37. bailey

    I REFUSE TO WATCH BET-PLAIN & SIMPLE

    @LINWOOD

AS FAR AS PROTESTING THE SHOW BECAUSE WE SEE OURSELVES IN IT-I’M TIRED OF BEING STEREOTYPED WITH OTHERS IN MY RACE THAT DOES THINGS I HAVE NEVER DONE-BOOTY SHAKING CONTEST, MURDER, ROBBING, & STEALING-OKAY

HELL WHEN A WHITE PERSON COMMITS A CRIME-THEY DON’T PUT A LABEL ON ALL WHITES BUT WHEN ONE BLACK DOES SOMETHING THEY STEREOTYPE US ALL-

THAT’S WHY I’M PROTESTING THE SHOW-BECAUSE SOCIETY ALREADY HAS ENOUGH DEROGATORY OPINIONS OF BLACK -WHY REINFORCE THEM WITH THIS SHOW

  38. Koko

BET copped out. But then they needed to because it’s ironic for it to even be on BET in the first place.

    R. Kelly is gonna be an automatic mistrial. We all know it.

  39. DEE DEE

~They need to send R.Kelly ass to jail ASAP, he did that shit. It don’t make no damn sense for them to be lingering this case for years. He played out anyways!!!!!

~Hot ghetto mess is just another way of putting us back 200 more years. and how is putting people on blast about how the look on T.V. going to make any chang it just gives us a chance to degrade ourselfs.

~Vibe vixen was a good magazine!!!!!!!!!

  40. oatsuzn

That Fantasia cover looks hideous. She look like a blonde wombat LOL.

  41. Tasha

It’s a shame that vibe vixen is folding. Everytime you get a magazine that caters to our demographic it tanks.

As for R. Kelly I don’t think he is going to get a fair trial. I thought they might have thrown it out or asked for a change of venue or something.

  42. BET is not even worth getting mad about. Bob Johnson don’t care about you or me – the man wanted to get paid. BET is a business, not social work. If we stop watching it, artists and advertisers will walk away from it, and it will change. Trust. But don’t get it twisted that they care about the content and its effect on a community – this is about money and nothing else.

And yes, publications like Vibe Vixen and Suede will continue to fail because the target audience does.not.read.

  43. Aww…man Vibe Vixen is gone!! That was the one and only magazine for young black females who were in that awkward years of not being a Seventeen teen and not an older Cosmo toting adult…as a 20 year old I really enjoyed that mag cause it was just right for my age group and race…man…back to reading 32 Sex Tricks To Blow Your Man’s Mind & gazing at white girl clothes that my fat ass could never fit in…

    R. Kelly…put him in jail so we’ll stop hearing his awful music, I heard he’s doing another addition Trapped In The Closet *rolls eyes*

BET is a “Hot Ghetto Mess” and needs to do better… and I seriously think they need another channel…one for movies and shows and another for just music (and ALL kinds of black music, not just rap) BET needs to check themselves and really reconsider their line-up cause they are not drawing me in to watch as a black sista

  44. Kelly, u going down finally?? Maybe you can slide remy ur lawyer!

  45. #42 Good point, Bob Johnson could care less.

I think the R. Kelly situation is gonna be a mistrial, its gone on too long, and he can’t really get a fair trial anywhere in the world. I know some of ya’ll want to see him do time, but more than likely it’s not gonna happen.

Now back to my jalapeno poppers.

  46. appearance03

It’s about time (referring to R.Kelly).

  47. Who does BET think they’re trying to fool by changing the name to the show? Regardless of what they are claiming that they are trying to accomplish, it’s still going be viewed as another degrading spectacle of black folks. Every since Debra Lee has become president, the programming of BET has gone from pathetic to catastrophic.
Every race has their “bad seeds”, but it doesn’t help to air our laundry on national television. Why does BET want to add more fuel to the stereotypical fire of blacks that is already burning out of control? This show is NOT aimed to encourage us to reflect on the man in the mirror. How many of you actually believe that Charlie Murphy is not going to ad lib with some dry wisecracks about the clips aired?

Come on now BET; you people have to do better than that!
You are trying to sell us bull$h!t and call it sugar. Well honey, I’m not buying it! Debra Lee, shame on you!!!

  48. PLEASE TELL ME how intentionally depicting black people as dirty, dumb, ignorant HOT GHETTO MESSES will set the stage for progressive conversation in our communities. We don’t need more of the same, this is just gonna be what BET already is but to the 10th power.

Bob Johnson really ought to be ashamed of himself for selling out. But he sold out years ago, way before he sold his “baby” to Viacom.

I think the more we put things like this on TV, the more Don Imus situations will occur. Guess what: white people watch BET. Next thing u know we’re gonna look up and this country will be as segregated and full of racial tension as it was in 1930!

It makes people think that Black poeple are really like that and We’RE NOT! We are so much better and we can do better.

  49. MISSTEEJAY

    WE on the same page!

  50. tammy

lol @ changing the name of the show . I guess they’re so use to blacks accepting anything they knew this would pacify a few of them .what a shame .

  51. gg boo

    R. Kelly – I am from the CHI and even I have to admit the guy clearly has a problem (but so do a lot of celebs, they just don’t get caught, not excusing, just saying). If he did the shit he should pay, if he didn’t then he shouldn’t. If ol girl isn’t trying to testify anymore, or she’s been paid off or whatever, then it’s over.

HGM – I agree with LINWOOD (22) on a lot but what I honestly believe is that social change isn’t going to happen from a rapidly deteriorating TV station, it’s going to happen in the communities, the churches, the support of black-owned businesses and real education standards. It IS about how we portray ourselves and it’s unfortunate that BET would partake in highlighting the negative aspects for cash. But it IS a business. Sad but true. (This is the same station that had more outcry when that Uncut porn shit was taken off the station than when the News was canceled. Who the eff cancels NEWS? It was only 30 minutes!)

I knew VIXEN was gonna go down – there’s no value on young black women’s points of view or their needs. Ever since Essence sold out several years ago, the mag is full of ridiculously priced products and glossy ads that many cannot afford. I know there are many who can, but…dayum. RIP Vixen and RIP to things that just make sense and uplift us on BET.

  52. gg boo

    Ooohh – ANGEL_LA – CONCRETELOOP SHOULD START A MAG!! (And I want 20% finder’s fee!! LOL!)

  53. Judge Judy

Damn, I love Vibe Vixen. I truly enjoyed the magazine. Its nice to know you have a magazine caters to your demographic. I cant believe its going away. What the hell am I supposed to read now? I like Essence but that magazine caters to older women like my mother.

Hot ghetto mess, Hot ass mess, We’ve got to do better, blah, blah, blah. Its the same f**king show. BET must think all black people is stupid. No, the white man who runs BET thinks all black people are stupid. Its the same show, showing us how ignorant of buffoons alot of negroes can be. They can run the show if they like. I dont or nobody I know personally doesnt potray those type of stereotypical images that I see everyday. Some of you are scared because you are afraid they will show how alot of negroes act. Some of you are scared because you might actually be seen on the show acting a damn fool. You cant blame other people for airing out the black race’s dirty laundry. Negroes in america and around the world already do that when you see them on the 10 o’ clock news or in front of your daily newspapers. It is what is. I think after this show airs, one or two things is going to happen. Negroes will clean up their act or Negroes will continue on with the same sh*t day in and out. I dying to see how this sh&t unfolds. Let the show begin!!!

  54. algie

bout damn time r kelly…its time to put mr pee-pee man up under a jail. and like someone said earlier bet is a hot ghetto mess…can’t blame it on the white man no more lol

  55. L.Renee

I read Vibe Vixen like one time and that was it. It was so BORING, but I read Cosmopolitan all the time. Now thats a good mag.

  56. MissChrys

Vibe VIXEN will be missed!!! It was THE magazine for us and although the magazine industry is not the same anymore there are still many publications that simply don’t make any damn sense “Floss, Feds, etc” still up and running. Young black women need the Honey, Suede, and Vixen magazines but no one is willing to see it through and put in the effort. But please ladies and gents pick up the next and final issue!!! I heard its hott!!!

  57. Vibe Vixen…hmmm…never read it.

I’m not even upset about them calling it Hot Ghetto Mess. I’m upset because the depiction of blacks on this show, doesn’t represent a large amt of blacks. We already have to deal w/ white people thinking that we act like this…but to have this kind of behavior broadcasted on national TV is a disgrace. Just adding more fuel to the fire.

  58. MiMi

Damn! vibe vixen was just now getting good. I knew it would last! That reminds me,I haven’t received a copy of Jewel magazine in awhile. *Sigh

  59. yes

I’ll miss Vibe Vixen. It reminded me of Honey.

I’m sure ppl scanning the articles and pictures had something to do with that. People wont buy what they can see for free.

#12 it takes money to keep something runnin, i dont think hip hop politics has anything to do with this

If ppl want to keep something around they gotta support it.

  60. damn theb rest! i got a vibe vixen subscription and i want my refund!
