ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DC YEAGER
Monday, August 20, 2007

DC Yeager feat. Ne-Yo - Let Me Know
Attributing much of his inspiration to Brian McKnight, Babyface, Boys II Men, Jodeci, Color Me Badd, and many of the other R&B heartthrobs of the early 90’s, DC Yeager, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, has a sound that is very familiar to any of those artists who were just mentioned. Something about his tone and even the production on the Ne-Yo-featured “Let Me Know” just takes me straight back to the 90’s. The arrangement, the lyrics - everything about it to me sounds like one of the songs I’d be listening to at a young age in my older sister’s room. I think that’s what people are going to be going for in the new wave of music, even with content: a sound and subject matter more reminiscent of a lighter time in music. When R&B was just about getting to know someone, and just grooving.

Here we go another Justin Shitalake, yeah yeah, give white soul a chance. I am tired of these bluy eye crooners, but hey if that mess –Keeping it in the closet–R Child Molester Kelly— is all we have–then let the white boys make a move into R&B. Maybe that will teach black artist to stop merging hip hop and classic R&B, because its getting lost in those thud type beats and nonsense lyrics. My opinion…the one has spoken.

YALL REMEMBER JON B ? he was the shit. good r&b is good r&b no matter who wants to do but im am tired of neyos voice why cant he just write! its funny of how all of a sudden some of these blue eyed cats have better voices then the people we got in r&b robin thicke justin timberlake christina aguilera, etc,

Yes, this song is very Jon B.-ish…but I like it. He was definitely influenced by the 90’s.
I don’t see anything wrong with a white artist doing R&B as long as they’re keeping it real.

If the black folks ain’t gone do it right then it needs to be taken over.
If you break down any popular black r&b song (minus b. mcknight, tamia, Tasia) by lyrical content then you realize that there is really no song there.
Just because a chick or guy can sing don’t mean that the track has a story line…now-a-days artists just throw together some words (sometimes it rhymes; sometimes it doesn’t), throw in a catchy hook and bingo………hit. I remember listening to Tony, Toni, Tone first CD and was like…wtf…this song don’t make no sense.

Reminded me of Jon B..but this guy just bored me…I think what worked with music from the early 90’s was that the songs were believable..I believed them when they sang about loving this one girl or whatever….Now it just sounds contrived…and I notice race is gonna feature big in the comments so Ill add my 2 cents..Ive noticed the standards for white singers are different….I noticed people make more of an allowance when the singer is white..I mean I want to be blown away..this guy wasnt even “eh” to me…..

His voice is very average. Hardly “blue-eyed soul”. Damn you Justin Timberlake for making every whiny-voiced white guy think they can be some sort of R&B superstar. There are some amazing White soul singers though, don’t get me wrong.

Y’all may think this dude was just “eh”…But really…what young black R&B cat is out there today (getting air time) who can REALLY sing? No, not who can just “perform” and dance and put on a show to distract you from his horrible voice while he’s breathing all hard…but one who can sing acapella and doesn’t need the studio to sound worthwhile? Ne-Yo, Trey Songz, and Lloyd can do it (I’ve seen them in concert)..but who else? Dudes back in the day used to be UGLY, but they could sing, and that’s all that mattered. These days, as long as they’re semi-cute, can dance, and like taking off their shirts, they’re destined to make a hit, even if their voices are garbage…It’s hard to get them to play real R&B on the radio these days, ’cause you can’t dance to it…UGH!!! Future generations probably won’t know 97% of the junk they play on the radio these days…R&B needs help, y’all…

I feel Bryan on the R&B from the 90’s. I used to listen in my big sister’s room too. LOL. But…this ain’t quite it. I do dig Ne-Yo & Robin Thicke, but I’m feeling #7. I hate the way the song started too. And now that I’m grown and I know that no amount of sex produces screams and hollas on this level, I think this borders on lame and I find myself laughing at this joint.

@46 where do you live and why are you on here? Go to perez hilton.com or tv guide or E! where your people reign supreme. We get enough of you 24/7 online, on tv, in mags in the newpapers, DANG!
I am black– 100 percent– and I will see you (cuz I am a lady) all day–I will leave it at that. You people always want what we have, its called Rhythm and Blues —not blue for the eyes.
And by the way I love Robin Thicke but lets be correct its not about his color when you can sing and your beats are on point I will but your ish, but I AM STILL tired of your people stealing our ish! And our people not recognizing it when its happening. Next thing you know that brother will win a BET best R&B album.
And for the hanckerchief wearing negros up in here defending, lets all get along because its 2007, when was the last time you read a report on the civil rights violations that happen in this country ever day to innocent black folk, or better yet go to CBS.com and check what they good white folks are saying about the young Christian woman that is on Big Brother or about the sister suing Imus— right or wrong–but its all love baby. The one has spoken.

With better collaborations and guidance I think he can make it.
He needs to knock on Babyface´s, Darkchild, Static Playa (and all the Aaliyah “dreamteam”) and he´ll comeout flawless. Ne-yo is slippin on this one.
Could care less what any haterz say in here. I support good ish when I hear it. I just hit him up at myspace.

R&B is R&B. You can’t hate on someone because they’re more attracted to one style of music than the other. It shouldn’t matter about race, all that matter is the music. If you actually went to listen to the other songs on his Myspace, you would see that it does have a 90’s R&B vibe. You know that Jon B. cool relax music.
Don’t front either, EVERYBODY liked Jon. B!

Dimples Delight and Rhannie - Stop it! Yall are making too much sense. I was listening to Keith Sweat last night thinking, Damn! Who killed the music?
As far as what young artists can sing today, Mario is definitely one. And if you’re going to dog this boy out for his singing you can’t turn around and give props to Ne-yo and Lloyd who are both average singers.

I agree this takes me back. It is refreashing to not heat about calling on a hotline, being flirt,or having dripping love like honey. There used to be a time when you could feel the music…that’s why they call it soul music because you could feel it in your soul now all I do is feel the need to turn off the Radio. Now these brothers and sisters are coming out with songs that have no meaning and no feeling. They think they can come out with gold suits, showing off their bodies and some awful lyrics and it is music. We need to learn that if We are not going to step up then someone will take our spots. They are recognizing that there is a need for old school R and B while many of us are into this BS that they are feeding us.

I’m only half of a Robin Thicke and Justin fan. Sometimes I can appreciate and listen to what they do and other times I can’t. It just depends on the song. Fact of the matter is that anybody can sing and sound good in falsetto. As long as you are on key, it doesn’t take much to sound good. This dude right here might be able to really sing, but he’s all nasally and whiny. There is no actual “soul” in his voice that I can hear. I’d hear this on the radio and instantly think “Ewww…why is this whiny white boy singing R&B?” And I personally have no problem with white, mexican, Asian, whatever color people singing whatever type of music. Just make it good. To me, this is not good. Lyrics and beat are on point, but the voice needs work.

The majority of these caucasians only use R&B as a vehicle to get into the music industry. That’s why the ones that do maintain to any degree in R&B usually have someone black coaching them (i.e. Pharell/Robin Thicke, Timbaland/Justin Timbalake, Neyo/this dude, etc.). That shows that these people don’t have “soul”, lol. They have to be taught “soul” and coached “soul”. With the eyebrow ring and all that shit, this dude comes off to me as an undercover rocker. He’ll either make it big in R&B with a little image change and more hit songs written by Neyo, or he’ll go into hard rock after putting on an R&B front like Kelly Clarkson and Pink.
