ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DC YEAGER

Monday, August 20, 2007

dcyeager.jpg

DC Yeager feat. Ne-Yo - Let Me Know

Attributing much of his inspiration to Brian McKnight, Babyface, Boys II Men, Jodeci, Color Me Badd, and many of the other R&B heartthrobs of the early 90’s, DC Yeager, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, has a sound that is very familiar to any of those artists who were just mentioned. Something about his tone and even the production on the Ne-Yo-featured “Let Me Know” just takes me straight back to the 90’s. The arrangement, the lyrics - everything about it to me sounds like one of the songs I’d be listening to at a young age in my older sister’s room. I think that’s what people are going to be going for in the new wave of music, even with content: a sound and subject matter more reminiscent of a lighter time in music. When R&B was just about getting to know someone, and just grooving.

“, but I AM STILL tired of your people stealing our ish! And our people not recognizing it when its happening.”

Where in the world have you been? Caucasians have been copying our music for several generations. And weather if you recognized it our not, we have taken note but it doesn’t affects most of us because this is nothing new. Instead of getting frustrated, try understanding why they imitate us. Why? Because Black people are what’s up! We are the most talented creatures on this Earth and they can’t help but bite our style!

———————————————-

People are making negative comments about these Caucasian artists because color of their skin and not their talent…that’s so shallow. We scream about wanting to be equal and having peace yet we do not dispense it. LOL. We need to respect them because at least they got talent. I don’t care if you purple, green, a lesbian or from another country. As long as you have a REAL talent of singing and have a desire to make music regardless of the genre, I can’t do nothing but respect you.

What we need to do is put more effort into getting rid of artists who are corrupting the airwaves into thinking it hot to be a criminal and selling drugs as well as eleminating some of these artists/singers who expose their bodies and sell sex to market their their albums.

This is a nice R&B song. I have to agree with some of the posters above. Brothas are just puttin’ out straight garbage. How many songs can you put out about someone’s big booty. Today’s black male r&b singers are just commercialized field negroes.

This song is nice, smooth, drink of sensual. This white boy is good and he’s bringing back 90’s R&B. I will buy his cd. When is it dropping? Very Jon B. but MUCH better. And he looks better too.

Ok..I just went to his website. Listen to more of his stuff.

This white boy is straight up fire! All his songs are excellent. This is actually the weakest joint he’s got.

He needs to release and album. He’s definitely bringing back that ole school r&B. He’s not relying on hooks and beats. It’s just his voice, beautiful respectful lyrics and sensual melody.

GO WHITE BOY, GOOOOOO!!!!

Soul has no color (Michael McDonald is a good example)! Pretty Ricky has soul, Ciara has soul, huh? A lot of these artists in general are using music as a vehicle for other projects (movies, clothing lines etc) and they sound like crap. Like previously mentioned soul is a feelling. There are a lot of Black artists out here who have black people coaching them and still lack soul. If we do not want “white” people to use “our” music as a means to another end then Black artists need to step up their musical game. But if we continue to put out some of the garbage we are putting out and we continue to fail in our support of the Angie Stones, Lyfes, Urban Mystiqs and Anthony Hamiltons then THEY will continue to “use” our music to “get” what they want.

Black people can be the most racist people ever- if you dislike him do it for his music, not because he’s white. That’s considered racist, because he is being pre judged and dismissed on the color of his skin. (Read:prejudice)

And for all you people that complain that whites have stolen black music for generations- yes you’re absolutely correct, however we aren’t enslaved/Jim Crowed now, are we? Yes there are still barriers and roadblocks, but how about we try to advance and break those barriers down rather than bitching that they’er there. As a race, we like a goddammned damsel in distress, waiting for some knight in shining armor to save us.

You know what else is funny, let concreteloop or any other blog post something about Beyonce doing something entrepreneurial and we get a resounding chorus of ‘why dont she sit down!’. As much as I dont like Beyonce style of music, I respect what she’s doing as a business woman- keeping it in the family, making investments and doing it while she’s young.

And to reiterate some of the points made above- there are only so much booty- i wanna sex you- im in da club- shawty buy me a drank CRAP that can be produced and consumed.

Final point- I am a big Robin Thicke fan, and please do some research before you assume that Pharell ’schooled’ him. Robin wrote produced and arranged all of his tracks , except the one he did with Pharell on his album. He has been in music since a teenager, and has been writing tracks for other black artistes. Robin also does not always sing in falsetto- if you listen to his first album, and anyone who is grown/married can relate to his music more than the r/b crap that gets played on the air.

Isn’t that Derek Jeter?

90.

Peacekeeper00

Monday, August 20, 2007 /

@72 - You made a good point! There are white artist out like Justin Timberlake that switched it up once pop music faded out. But with Robin, he was always soul.

For the record, Robin didn’t get his start with Pharrell, nor is his latest album his first. He started out signed to Andre Harrell and Babyface’s label, Nu America.

@13, I TOTALLY DISAGREE. BLACKS ARE THE FOUNDATION OF R&B AND MANY OTHER GENRES OF MUSIC. WE ARE TOO NATURALLY TALENTED TO BE REPLACED. THIS PROVES ONCE AGAIN THAT YOU CAN IMITATE, BUT NEVER DUPLICATE!!

93.

judah

Monday, August 20, 2007 /

That dude does look like Jeter, lmao. I knew that there would be a chorus of some black women, not all the sisters obviously, that would come and try to play devil’s advocate for this dude. The same few black women that bitch and complain about Kim Kardashian and suck their teeth whenever they see a picture of Wesley Snipes. The same ones that would pull their hair out if there was a post about Joss Stone and 50-60 black men came on talking about “she look good”. Whatever. Time exposes all. We’ll see, lol.

@88

I didn’t say Pharrell schooled your cokehead, homosexual hero. I said he “coached” him. There’s a difference. It just happened that the song he did with Pharrell is his biggest hit. Excuse me, his only hit. People kill me with that nonsense about how long he’s been out. Everyone is out for years before they hit it big. I remember the stupidass video where he played the bike messenger. It flopped.

pharrell coaches robin thicke? maybe he cosigned for him initially. but not even really cuz thicke was out way back in the day when he was scruffy and ridin bikes thru nyc. i don’t think soul has a color. yes r and b is traditionally black but how can u be mad at someone for “stealing our music.” i think that whole idea is garbage.

ppl are gonna sing what they wanna sing. nobody is sayin nothin bout rihanna and her songs….those aren’t traditional r and b songs now. nobody says rihanna can’t sing “shut up and drive” bcuz shes black. or the whole rock star thing that everybody is doin nowadays. im just sayin us black folk need to start lookin at things from both sides. r and b is not some secret form of music that was meant only for black ppl and that’s only supposed to be listened to by black ppl.

man im done.

the idea tho is that rock isn’t generally a thing that black ppl do. u don’t see that many black ppl (besides travis from gym class heroes) doing the rock thing mainstream. rock as in ppl bein “rock stars” was popularized by white ppl. the average black person isn’t gonna be like let me go get my electric guitar and rock out somewhere.

Once again #72 JUDAH is a bigot.
Alwayz gotta act like you know the deal. Stop generalising people. So dude knew Ne-Yo from way back when. Shouldn’t he hook up with him if he chooses to!?

If you don’t like the song or artist so be it. Acceptable. Just don’t go around breaking down lies like you psychic and know why thangz are the way they are. Coz you don’t.

Take a good look at the industry and you’ll see that it ain’t all white folks being coached by black folks. What nonsense!

Whitney and Clive davis….
Last time I checked Scott storch coached a whole lotta upcommers….

Cut the crap. Your comments always has you sounding like you got major issues eating you up.

Back to the topic……

#72,

actually this dude is a former boy band member. He was in a group called Youngstown (yeah, original lol). I got their cd, and guess what???? Neyo wrote a lot of those songs on the cd. I knew the name shaffer smith sounded hella familiar. But he was the lead singer, FYI. They had that rnb/pop sound. But all in all, i disagree about these dudes being coached, at least robin thicke. He did rnb/soul before Pharrell. He’s written hella soul/rnb/pop songs for other artists.

True, I tend to give the blue eyed soul crowd a chance. There’s some other dudes out there with real talent who weren’t coached by random black hitmakers. It would be quite cynical to think that every white person who sounds “black” or sings soul doesn’t do so by their own will, but by the will of some svengali (sp?) mastermind in it to make money. Some are coached, others are not. And when was Kelly Clarkson rnb? I gets the Pink comparison, but the same can be said about other black artists.

@103

Once again Judah is his own man, lol. Why you so mad about that for? Anyway, #106 cut you, lol. There must be alot of bigots because alot of people agreed with me and alot of people called him a fake prior to my post. You’re one of those stupid black people that try to make black people feel embarassed for expressing themselves honestly. I thank the Lord for gifting me with the ability to say things that galvanize people negatively or positively because it never fails that people feel the need to comment on my comment. Let me do me, lol. Am I stopping you from being a coon? You would have nothing to say to me if I really was stupid or ignorant like you claim because then I’d be the normal nigga you spend your time bad-mouthing. I didn’t listen to the song, don’t need to. I only listen to Tupac, Nas, a couple of other artists and maybe a few singles in regards to hip hop and R&B. I enjoy classical music more than this nonsense. His music has nothing to say to me. I’m just addressing the phenomena of “blue-eyed soul”. Get over it.

#93- Sadly a commercial hit does not equate musical success in my mind. ‘Buy you a drank’ was a #1 billboard hit but that does not endear me to Tpain or his lyrics. Sorry. ‘When I get you alone’ is actually a pretty good song (IMO) bad hairstyle and low budget video notwithstanding.

You can dislike Thicke because he is white, because he sings with that falsetto, or maybe because his wife is black, however his lyrics are truthful, and his musical arrangements tight. On his last album he has a song ‘would that make you love me’ that he wrote because of how he felt making the album as a white person making R/B. You can’t fake talent. His album is one of few where I can listen to all the tracks.

Now I must say that I agree with your observation about Kim K and Wesley Snipes. I think it is human nature where people will take time out to say negative hurtful things rather than something uplifting. That is the nature of entertainment gossip blogs. If there is a pic of Wesley Snipes/JayZ/ 50 cent there are then the Joe Camel/gorilla jokes because that is what small minded people do - they make fun of whatever is not in keeping with their percceived norms.

Which bring me back to my original point of blacks being their worst enemy sometimes. It’s ok to call Jay Z Joe camel (because of his lips and nose) but let TMZ call Beyonce’s OUTFIT ‘roboho’ and now its a civil rights issue. What sense does that make?

Anyway thats enough from me for tonight.

66, what did u expect them to call it back in the days of Hall and Oates and the Righteous Brothers. Now the name has just stuck.
