Very interesting post, and I definitely do see your point of view. One thing about the Williams sisters though- they are first and foremost athletes, and hugely succesful ones at that. American Express offered them deals based on their success as tennis players.

The entertainment industry on the other hand is all about the superficial. But of course we already know that. In college (a couple years ago in fact), I had to take a sociology 101 class. For some topic dealing with race and American culture, Beyonce was used as an example as an entertainer who had mass appeal because of her features and hairstyle. The picture the text book had was a head shot from her Destiny’s Child days, with blond hair, green contacts and European features.

Anyway, I am not agreeing/disagreeing with you or anyone else. I just wanted to add something to the discussion because I saw your disclaimer was based on the Williams sisters not looking like Beyonce, but they got an Amex endorsement.

My disclaimer: I am EXTREMELY happy for Beyonce. I am a young (ish ) black female trying to make something of myself, if not for me only, but for when I have kids they can have something. I may not like Beyonce’s music, dancing or weave/makeup choices, but I damned well admire her work ethic. Why would she NOT want to make a few thousand dollars in a day just for showing her mug and pretending she can act? Who the hell wouldn’t?

As if the black community does not have enough debt, Beyonce Knowles goes pitching credit cards. And AMEX is the worst card, for people who carry balances from month to month, which is typical habit of black people.

The endorsing of Bey has nothing to do with the CEO being black. It has more to do with the fact that AMEX realizes an opportunity to make money off black people who have a propensity to spend money they dont have and carry balances, which AMEX makes a TON of money off of. Who else to talk to black people about getting an AMEX than our darling Beyonce.

Beyonce is not the standard of beauty for black women. Cleary she is not. Put her against a white girl ( her and Ashley Simpson at the Grammys) and you will find many similarities.
