NEWARK, New Jersey In a city where the murder rate has risen 50 percent since 1998, three promising College students were murdered execution style in a playground on Saturday.

Their names: Dashon Harvey, 20, Terrance Aeriel, 18, Iofemi Hightower, 20. There was also a fourth victim who police say survived the gunshot wound to the head. Natasha Aeriel, 19 (Terrance’s older sister) is said to be in fair condition at the hospital.

The four lived in Newark and were to attend Delaware State University this fall. None had criminal records, according to authorities, and relatives and neighbors said they were not involved in drinking, drugs or gangs.

“They were good kids,” Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow said. [SOURCE]

Cornered by thugs in a desolate Newark schoolyard, four college students kept their cool and sent each other a flurry of text messages that said, in essence – we’ve got to get out of here.

But before they could escape, three of the victims were marched to a wall, forced to kneel – and shot dead, police said yesterday.

The sole survivor, Natasha Aeriel, was in stable condition and under a 24-hour police watch at a Newark hospital after giving cops a sketchy description of Saturday’s slaughter and the five men responsible for the executions. Aeriel had been shot before the other students were slain.

“We’re getting the story piecemeal from her,” Police Director Garry McCarthy said of Aeriel, 19, a junior at Delaware State University. “Based upon witness testimony, we believe it was a robbery.”

McCarthy would not release the desperate text messages but said the victims did not appear to know their attackers. He also said they did not die without a struggle. [READ MORE]

A $50,000 reward was being offered for information leading to the arrest of those involved.

Beautiful post – It all makes sense. It’s not a one tiered problem. Please refer to my comment in #186 when I said that I believe we’re all right in our opinions on this matter. It’s great to have this much dialogue going on the subject.

  3. NIX

    true bam bam
    very true
without name calling and cussing at that

i think you have valid points and trust me while it is so important to not have video games, tv, ipods etc.. be the teacher of our children
a child can still enjoy these things in moderation as long as the are exposed to other things that matter as well i.e. books culture etc…
but i think we are losing alot of our kids because we just dont take the time anymore to teach them family values and actually listen to whats on their minds
a person ignored gets easily frustrated
and we all know alot of kids who join gangs are ignored at home and are looking for the attention they are not getting there

  4. Melo Dee

Those beautiful babies (yes I said babies) didn’t deserve to be executed or lead to their deaths in that way. I know that we aren’t supposed to have hate in our hearts, but the lord does state an eye for an eye and I hope whoever destroyed those babies and their families will suffer the same hurt that they caused.

    We’ve GOT to do batter!!!

  5. BlackBoricua

Screw the “Snitch” rule; If I knew who did this I would tell on their asses in a heartbeat and then dare somebody to do or say something, Bet! But don’t trip cause one of the victm’s was an ordained minister and the Lord promised his children “Revenge is mine” so best believe these fools will get got , no matter if it’s by the justice system or when their asses are burning in Hell!

  6. bambam

    @ NIX

Yeah, tell me. You are so on point. Where are our “Black Family Values”? Sure, we have core values, you know like, right, wrong, good, bad, God, Devil, but what about those structured family values like the ones you mention that help our kids build good CHARACTER as well?

I’m in no way a straight up conservative, but I believe we must apply some conservative-leaning values in order to function in a productive society. Especially in the young formative years.

  7. 344 that was beautiful but I don’t know what it’ll take many in my age rage (19-22) to listen……….. someone has to know something…I bet my own life at LEAST a handful of people know whose done this already and that pisses me off….and since people say these were such good young people it just drives me crazy wondering who would just execute them like that.

  8. sassysexychick

i’ve read a recent update stating that the killers were LATINO gang members who possibly was seeking retailiation over a past dispute and shooting…in any case no matter who killed these babies they need GOT!!!!

  9. Ms Nisha

This is horrible. It is so unfortunate to read about people being victimized when they are trying to do the right things with their life. The violence in our urban areas is getting way out of control. In the Detroit area (where I live) there is so much killing and shooting and 9 times out of 10 its senseless. We as a people have got to do better.

My prayers are going out to the families of the victims. Heaven help us all!

  10. Me2

BIG hand clap for posting the pictures of these young people. I read this story the other day but I didnt know they were african american. And now knowing that it hits closer to home knowing that promising african american young adults wont have a chance to better themselves.

  11. This is so sad…. I am a Mother of 2 baby sons, you mean you raise your kids, go through 12 hours of labor and they get ready to attend college because of all your sacrifice to raise them and then some punk runs up on your child, tells them to face a wall and bend down, and shot them in the head……. What on Earth has this world come too, I make sure I tell my husband and kids everyday I love them…. Did anyone visit the myspace page of Dashon Harvey, 20? Well I did and he was so full of life, I pray for all of the family involved, I do not even know these people, but my heart goes out to them and as a Mother I cannot even imagine how they are holding up.. God Bless!

  12. i.got.dat

    that is just terrible

  13. nicole

this is so sad god only takes the good one’s blesses to these families oh and by the way why in the title BLACK kids murdered kids being murdered is a tragedy whether their black white or whatever

  14. @#372 all the victims have a myspace page….and you should read what their friends are saying about them…..makes you want to cry.

  15. dehjavoo

jeez why are people so damn cruel

  16. Sumure777

This will stop when the black community says enough is enough we harbor our drug dealers, theives and murders. Why would you not tell on someone that has total disrgard for human life. What kind of rule says keep quite no matter how horrible the crime is? When did the ignorance over shadowed our need for justice to rid the hood of unwanted predators. I am outraged that anyone that would have information would not come forth(because of the no snitch rule). That ignorance is affecting inner city neighborhoods across america. Violent criminal know that they can commit any kind of crime in the hood and hide in plain sight . We have to own or own misery when something like this happens we have to speak up and STOP letting the predators have there way IN OUR NEIBORHOODS. Why would you not want to rid your streets/blocks of anyone recking havoc in your hood???

  17. Eboni Eb

    GOD IS MOVING….YALL KEEP PRAYING!!!!

  18. SOMEBODY SNITCH PLEASE!!

  24. bambam

    @ 382

I agree. I’d want them to wake up EVERYDAY and look around themselves at their surroundings and RELIVE their crimes every motherf8kin minute, second and nano second of their miserable lives. They’lkl face judgement soon enough. But for now, SUFFER.

  25. bambam

    FULL DISCLOSURE

Although I stand by some comments I made earlier in this post about our people and our troubles, I stand by them.

BUT I CANNOT ESCAPE THE FACT THAT I ALSO MADE SOME SERIOUS KNEE-JERK PRESUMPTIONS AT OUR RACE AS TO WHO I THOUGHT WAS GUILTY!

Am I no better than whites when I ASSUME we are guilty of crimes?
I guess the answer to that will come upon some much deeper introspection.

  26. TAMMY

Someone should kneel their asses down and shoot the execution style. That’s some heartless shit . If you want to rob them fine but they killed them for no apparent reason . Evil I tell you !

  27. sassysexychick

@386. i,too fell just as “guilty” as you did, only but a minute though, i really sat down and carefully analyzed had i ever heard of “black folks” subjecting as amany as 4 young teens to such horrific violence,. I couldnot and then my thoughts were redirected in a dream to 1. Latino Gang and 2.KKK (or some yt racist group) Bingo i then was on the correct opinion…The Bastard Immigrants Latinos!!!!!!!!!

  28. BAMBAM

    @ 388 SASSYSEXYCHICK

Thanks for the feedback. I just had a moment where I thought if I’d read those comments on some white boards or heard it in public I want somebody’s f*cking head on a plate and an apology.

    So, sorry to US.

Now to get back on some good old fashion-ass anger shyt…………..

I’m STILL in shock that they were Mexican. I don’t know the racial make-up of Newark, but I just never thought…..

Can anybody from Newark weigh in? Are you surprised?

  29. 71qt

    YOU THAT IS PHUCKED UP!!!!

HOPEFULLY, WE(OUR PEOPLE) AND OTHERS TAKE THEIR RAGE OUT ON THEM AT NOT EVERY OTHER LATINO IN NEWARK….
CUZ IM FROM THE BRONX AND MOST OF THE HISPANICS THEIR ARE PUERTO RICAN AND DOMINICAN AND THEY ARE LIKE FAMILY 4REAL

BUT REGARDLESS OF THESE A$$HOLES RACE, WHAT THEY DID WAS TRAGIC AND ONLY THEY SHOULD SUFFER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. 71qt

ONLY THEY SHOULD SUFFER, ONLY THEY SHOULD SUFFER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I WOULD NEVER SAY SOME RACIST SHHHH ABOUT ANY HISPANIC OR ANY OTHER RACE FOR THAT MATTER JUST BECUZ OF WHAT A FEW PEOPLE DID!!!!

PLEASE CHANNEL YOUR ANGER TOWARDS THE RIGHT PEOPLE

  31. MW

I’m glad that they finally caught the guys! They don’t deserve anything less than cruel and unsual punishment!

  32. i hope these are truly the people who did it and not scapegoats. God will handle them though cuz the death penalty doesn’t seem like enough. I’m not just saying this because it was black kids who were killed. Anyone who decides to kill four of God’s innocent kids execution style will definitely receive His wrath. *sigh* i guess i should pray for the shooters too.

  33. *LiL~SeXC~MaMi*

seems like everytime sumthin happens yall got 2 pull tha race card out. TO ALL YALL RACIST PPL… IT DOES NOT MATTER WUT RACE IT WAS OF THOSE WHO COMMITTED THA CRIME, AS LONG AS JUSTICE IS SERVED THE RIGHT WAY, DATS WUT MATTERS. AND GET UR FACTS STRAIGHT THESE WERE NOT IMMIGRANTS, THEY WERE U.S. CITIZENS. IAM SO SICK & TIRED OF PPL AUTOMATICALLY ASSUMING THAT IF THEY R HISPANIC/LATINO, THEY R IMMIGRANTS. IF THESE WAS COMMITED BY AFRICAN AMERCANS AGAINST ANOTHER RACE, IM SURE PPL WOULD SAY THA SAME THING THEN YALL WOULD BE MAD. SO LETS GET OVER THE RACE AND GROW UP!!! FOCUS UR ATTENTION ON HOW WE CAN HELP PREVENT THINGS LIKE THIS FROM HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!

  34. ~est.1974~

Yes, this is truly tragic and is just another chapter in the Black American experience. However, This will not galvanize anyone to do anything because we remain passive, spectating people.

There were tons of people out there demanding the resignation of Mayor Booker, but where were they the week before or last year ?? DEMANDING programs for the children, better schools, fair opportunity for small business ownership, affordable housing for the working class…? do I need to go on? Wil;l they be out next month rallying… when this case blows over and another tragedy occurs?

This is what WE as a people need to be discussing and being outraged about on a DAILY basis, NOT what color Beyonce’s hair is tonight, and whether Usher has ashy lips…

Until we mobilize… this will continue….

  35. jerseygirl

I feel deeply sading to here that this Has happen in are community.I hope they catch everybody that took part in this crime and sentence them to death. I know how it feels to have a love one taking from you. My condolences to the family of the victims. If you know something stand up and speak out cause you would want somebody to do something if it was your family or friend.

  36. RODRIGUEZ

well thank goodness they have arrested 2 ppl who had something to do with it, they need to be locked up 4 life

  37. Angry Black Girl

I am from Newark and eveybody is surprised that latinos committed this crime. I know that is wrong to say b/c any race can commit a crime but with all the gang violence everybody thought this was some type of gang initiation. Thank god, they got these animals off the street. I hope this brings a positive change in the city. Lord knows we need it.

  38. God Bless!

Pair arrested in Newark schoolyard slayings
    Story Highlights
NEW: Jose Carranza, 28, surrenders in schoolyard shootings case

NEW: Boy, 15, taken into custody Wednesday night

College students forced to kneel against wall, shot in head

Slayings shocked Newark, New Jersey, where street violence is common
NEWARK, New Jersey (CNN) — Two people, including a 15-year-old boy, are in custody in connection with the execution-style slayings of three college students in a Newark, New Jersey, schoolyard, authorities said.

Jose Carranza, 28, of Newark, surrendered with his lawyer at midday Thursday, Mayor Cory A. Booker said.

The suspect insisted on surrendering to the mayor after learning he was wanted for murder.

“He simply came forward. He said nothing,” recalled Booker, who rushed from a news conference to meet the lawyer, Felix Lopez Montalvo, for the surrender. Watch Booker describe the surrender »

“We put him in handcuffs and we walked the individual into the office. I personally helped the detective to sit him down and I left,” the mayor added.

The teenager was taken into custody at about 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

Booker said others are being sought. “We have very, very strong leads,” he told reporters. “I want the killers off the streets of Newark.”

Ballistics evidence, information from the shooting’s lone survivor and a fingerprint lifted from a beer bottle at the scene led to the major break in a criminal case that has outraged a city numbed by street violence.

At a news conference earlier Thursday, Booker praised the “incredible courage” of survivor Natasha Aeriel, 19. She is in stable condition and under heavy police guard at The University Hospital in Newark, recovering from gunshot and knife wounds.

“From her hospital bed, she has been cooperating with authorities and making identifications,” Booker said.

Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy and Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow asked for the public’s help in the rapidly developing case. A $150,000 reward is being offered for information.

An arrest warrant had sought Carranza’s arrest for three counts of murder, a single count of attempted murder, four counts of robbery, conspiracy and weapons offenses.

“We believe that others were involved in this heinous crime. We are looking for them,” Dow said.

The 15-year-old was not identified because of his age, but Dow said she would seek to try him as an adult.

Newark has become accustomed to violence but the slayings on Saturday night touched a nerve.

The four friends, ages 18 to 20, were shot while listening to music at the schoolyard.

Three of them — Terrance Aeriel, 18, Dashon Harvey, 20; and Iofemi Hightower, 20 — were forced to kneel against a wall and were shot in the head, execution style.

Authorities have said robbery appeared to be the motive, but Dow said Tuesday that police also were looking into possible gang involvement.

While Newark has seen 60 homicides this year, the schoolyard killings stood out because the victims, by all accounts, were good kids. All four were enrolled at Delaware State University or were in the process of enrolling.

James Harvey, Dashon’s father, described his son Monday as “a good, good student, college student.”

“For him to be killed on the streets of Newark needlessly is very unacceptable,” he said at a news conference.

“They’re out here hurting innocent kids,” he added. “Innocent people are dying needlessly, unnecessarily and for what? For what? This has to stop.”

  39. I am SO GLAD people didn’t keep silent about this like most folks usually do….I’m so so glad. That made my heart pound as soon as I read they had 2 people arrested…..it’s definitely something. Hold up the survivor had knife wounds too?! WTH was the reason for all this…..come on man smh. Why are the police looking into gang involvement? -_o If robbery was truly the only motive then both the suspects if found guilty should be hung.

This is awful. I cannot believe the evil that is in this world with us. My thoughts and prayer go out to the victim’s family, and loved ones. I want to somehow grip this, because I still cannot believe this story. Why? Why would these cowards come along and take someone’s life as if its nothing? Parents everywhere, hold your child, and never let go because you never know if their going to come back home to you the next day. I’m here in Virginia, and I never seen anything so cruel, so cold and calculated like this story. NO ONE on this earth is qualified to take another’s life. I’m praying, and hoping that this will not lead to a war with the blacks and hispanics in Newark. Let God take care of this evil that came and took these poor kid’s lives. I’m crying with the parents of these four kids. I’m crying because we’re all family in this one place we call home, and that is earth. May God be with you all, and I will keep you in my prayers. I have a 12 year old son, and believe me we have some rough kids here in Virginia too, so I say to all parents just like one of the victim’s father said. Talk to your kids, bring them up correctly. Do not let them run you, you run them.

  41. Kelly

    # 161 you said it all, black people are the reason for all of this. This is why they are they are at the BOTTOM of all the races. Blacks continuiously ALLOW these things to happen. A shooting happens then there is another townhall meeting then nothing gets done. Oh wait…most of the residents didn’t go to college so they don’t know what should be done. Because of this, it will continue to happen again and again. It’s a disgrace!!!!!!

  42. F0Cused23

Kelly I don’t know if you have noticed or not but the other man arrested wasn’t blk. It isn’t blk peoples fault. It is this nationa fault. You can’t single one race out. Some people can be so ignorant. We as a community (blk community) shoudl get together to improve our neighborhoods. But… It isn’t just the blk people doing crimes. It’s all races. No matter what neighborhood it is.

  43. MW

@394, The main suspect ACTUALLY IS AN ILLEGAL IMMMIGRANT FROM PERU!

  44. I dont care what race they are, or where they come from! .. Justice will be serve, they think they have it bad now wait until Judgement day!
Everyone knows thats the worse punishment from GOD
