EMILY KING - EAST SIDE STORY

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

eking.jpg

Emily King feat. Lupe Fiasco - Walk In My Shoes (Remix)

Call me predictable, but I love her voice and the groove of this song does something for me. When the track drops, I can’t help but nod my head. Emily King’s voice has this sultry maturity to it that just gives me slight chills. The 21-year-old J Records recording artist releases her debut album today, East Side Story. ESS is an album which has been described as the experiences driven from her young life in the cultural melting pot that is the Manhattan Lower East Side. Emily’s music is a fusion of R&B, funk, jazz, pop and soul, and her voice just sounds immaculate over each of the album’s well-crafted songs.

I don’t wanna hear 1 black person say anything when the bet nominees for best r&b artist are Amy Winehouse, Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, Emily King, and the next white person who does a decent soul cut. Nobody notices that black artists are starting to be phased out? The industry along with mass media is working on killing hip-hop right now, and you’ll all ready know blacks dont buy r&b anymore. You’ll don’t find it crazy that all these acts have the material but none of their talent compares to all of the black artists who get thrown under the bus? Let Kelly Rowland have released these two tracks and nobody would care. I dare anybody on here to prove me wrong.

Thanks @ Run Forest Run…I KNEW there was a reason that REASON was one of my favorite trax off that Nas joint….her voice has a crushed velevet feel…definately something fresh///

And ANON I hear you…she happens to be half black but I still feel you. Even if she isnt part black we can’t deny the whole ‘India Arie’ Grammys syndrome of yesteryear. I am not saying that Alicia isnt a talent but we all know that she got all them Grammys over India because we are still ill with the issue of shade and skin color. (I think the new Alicia song makes the point that while she has talent, most of what she soars at is derived (cleverly I’ll add) from samples (not feeling that Marley Jacking of a song), while India came with a more original sound and execution. I am not that big of an India fan but I still think they did her dirty and that aesthetic worship is to blame….both whites and blacks can lust after Alicia, Cassie, Beyonce, Nicole S, Christina Milian without thinking about their race…Alicia is safe by record industry standards…and unfortunately so is Emily (though I am digging her sound and have a soft spot for real musicians…she writes, composes and plays instruments) I mean why else isnt singers like Marsha from Floetry as reknowned? With all her talent (come on it sounds like she has a damn canary in her ribcage) she is still not ‘racially safe’ or perceived as ‘fuckable’; two things that the industry (666) want to use to sell their artist…music seems to be last.

Its sad that we are in this place. That people like Georgia Anne Muldrowe…one of my faves…(who btw…wrote, composed, arranged, did the drum programming and sang the hell out of her first joint ‘worthnothings’ at the tender age of 20) may be overlooked because she looks too African or doesnt look “f*ckable” enough.

Thats why its up to the fans to go out and find the music that moves them. Dont wait for the industry to tell us what is good….

I tell you I cant wait to see how people respond to Jonelle Monaes music…it makes you understand why artists who are a lil to the left need established artists to co-sign or collab with them…otherwise they wouldn’t seem viable enough by pop music standards

Peace

and Twani

its true…good is good…but often times the industry..which often controls the fate of many an artist is less concerned about ‘good’ and more concerned about what will sell…so yes ‘if you build it…they will come’ the righteous generally prevail…but they usually end up the broke mofos cause they cant sell and they cant sell cause they arent promoted and they arent promoted cause they dont have pop appeal….meaning songs that are catchy…songs that almost ‘dumb down’ our sense of taste….

Sean Kingston
Cassie
Soulja Boy
Mims

these are artists with absolutely noooooooooo talent..(Im sure you can add a few hundred). Cassie atleast had her looks to save her ass…but you cant front…their songs were catchy and on the top forty for a minute not because the music is good…but because the music is catchy…and thats it…you are RARELY going to find GOOD music on the top forty…just music that makes you dance, lust and not think to much…

thats how the industry operates…and the GOOD music? Its up to us to find it and spread the word…otherwise their creators will be on the soup line!

peace again

The thing is #59, that Kelly Rowland is NOT releasing this kind of music. Her first single:

“You wanna keep that boy that make it jump like this
You all didn’t think that I could make it bump like this
See I told you all you all was gonna jump like this
How you not gonna know it when it hits like this”

I’m cool on that… and her second single? It’s called Ghetto:

“Rock your Timbs, sag your jeans
Ice your grill, it’s all good with me
Twenty-fours, big four doors
Ain’t no doubt, I’m down to roll”

She is her own worst enemy…
