HURRICANE KATRINA: TWO YEARS LATER

hkatrina.jpg
( Photo by: NOAA Satellite and Information Service Center )

Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29, 2005 and the rest is history. Yesterday marked the two year anniversary of this environmental and governmental disaster. Our hearts go out to everyone who was effected by Katrina’s wrath.

After the cut, I attached a two clips from Spike Lee’s Emmy Nominated Documentary, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. It premiered to critical acclaim on HBO last year. This documentary was EXCELLENT and if you haven’t had a chance to view it yet, you need to. Check out HBO.COM for more info.

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE VIEWING THE VIDEO:

This video may contain content that is not suitable for the faint at heart. It contains graphic images of the victims of Hurricane Katrina’s wrath. This video is very powerful and I just wanted to make that clear to those who wanted to view it.

This is so sad and ther has still been nothing done

  2. Don Don

Hurricane Katrina 2 years later things have gotten only worse. Crime has skyrocketed and folks don’t have money to rebuild. It’s amazing that this is how the government still isn’t helping us 2 years later.

  3. slimredchick

WELL IM FROM NEW ORLEANS AND THE CITY IS GETTING BETTER

BUT PEOPLE STILL LIVING IN FEMA TRAILERS, I JUST GOT OUT OF MINE

CAUSE THE CITY IS COMIN TOGETHER

  4. Whoozdat1

I live in Southern Mississippi and there are still people living in FEMA trailers and with FEMA tarp on there homes. The Gulf Coast is still a mess. It’s still hard for a lot of people.

  5. slimredchick

ALSO ALOT OF THINGS ARE OPENING UP AND BULIDINGS ARE GETTING REBUILD…THE ONLY THING THATS REALLY HAS GOTTEN WORST IS CRIME

  6. key key

I SEE THERE ISNOT ALOT OF COMMENTS ON THIS ONE , THIS IS SO SAD , I HAVE FRIEND THAT HAD TO RELOCATE HERE TO VA FOR NEW ORLEANS , AND SHE SAID WHEN SHE WENT BACK THIS SUMMER EVERYTHING WAS THE SAME , SHE SAYS SHE WANTS RO GO BACK BECUASE THAT ‘S HER ROOTS BUT AT THE SAME TIME HER CHILDREN NEED A LIFE AND NOW ORLEANS DOES NOT HAVE THAT TO OFFER ANYMORE, YOU KNOW ALOT OF PEOPLE SAY THIS IS NOT A RACE ISSUE BUT LET THE HARDEST HIT AREA BE IN A PRODOMINITLY WHITE AREA THINGS WOULD HAVE BEEN FINISHED 3 WEEKS AFTER THE STORM , THIS IS SAD, BUT YOU KNOW THE TYPE OF LIFE WE ARE LIVING UNDER THE DIRECTION OF BUSH, i CAN T WAIT TILL OHBAMA IS ELECTED !

  7. bklyn0423

I heard about the crime being up. I’m so sorry to hear that crime is so high. I thnk the reason may be b/c people have no where to turn the Govt left them high and dry and are still doing nothing so people resort to crimes to make ends meet. Im not saying this is by any means right my heart goes out to New Orleans.

  8. sexual chocolate

congrats #3 i know you are glad. my heart goes out to all of katrina’s victims.hopefully this hurricane season wont be as bad

“George Bush doesn’t care about Black People”, Isn’t that about right!!!!!!!!!!

  10. YoungSavage

I can hardly believe you guys are just now posting an article about this. You are one day late on the most tragic memory of all times. Yesterday was the anniversary, NOT today. I can not believe yall slipped. My prayers goes out to those lost in Katrina and those who are trying to get their lives together again 2 long years later. And to # 3 Keep ya head up. Tom Joyner did a great show yesterday with N/O.

  11. I watched the documentary about a month ago and I had to pause it and walk away at times. Bless the victims.

  12. Syna

#10 At least they posted something. Those other blogs could care less about serious discussion.

As for the video, I cried. I just ordered a copy of the film from HBO’s site, I wanna see the whole thing. Much love to everyone effected. :(

    ANGEL

Thank you so much for hyping Spike’s When The Levees Broke. Earlier in the year, I ordered the 3 disc set from Netflix and became so entranced that I watched all 3 discs in a row, including the extras.

And it’s haunted me since then.

This is truly REQUIRED viewing. People should know that initially, the government DID NOTHING to help the victims in the first days of this tragedy! And fuk Bush going to New Orleans and saying that more help is on the way. Not surprisingly, Mississippi got more aid than New Orleans.

    Please watch this.

  14. bambam

    @ BLK DDS

….and could you ever forget that haunting score?

BUT THE FILM WAS SOO SAD I JUST CANT BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE STILL IN THE SAME SITUATION THAT THEY ARE IN… BUSH DOESNT CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE..KAYNE WEST I AGREE.. I REALLY DO….

  17. this is really sad. People should stop destroying nature, cause these kinda things are nature’s payback……

All the people affected: be strong n dont lose hope!

  18. LikeThatYall

THANK YOU ANGEL FOR POSTING THIS. MY THOUGHTS TO ALL THE VICTIMS OF THIS CATASTROPHE.

THIS IS YET ANOTHER DISGRACE COURTESY OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION!! THEY WERE TOO BUSY SQUANDERING PUBLIC’S MONEY ON RUNNING THE DISASTROUS IRAQ WAR AND THEY FORGOT ABOUT THEIR OWN PEOPLE. FOR SHAME.

WILL HOPEFULLY GET TO CHECK OUT THE SPIKE LEE MOVIE ;)

  19. bambam

    “GOOD JOB, BROWNIE”

  20. @ 10 & 16

    Hey Guys,

I apologize for not posting about this yesterday. I was actually waiting on clearance to post another clip of the Spike Lee Documentary, but never got a response from HBO. Therefore, I went on youtube and found other touching scenes from the doc.

  21. bambam

    NO WORRIES, ANGEL.

  22. My heart goes out to everyone that suffered through the hurricane as well as those who are living in Louisiana right now. You all are in my prayers…

  23. thirteen34

I’m in tears from watching that first clip. Does anyone know if HBO is re-airing the film?

And Angel who cares if you were a day late, it’s the thought that counts.

  24. Coffeecolor

For all of our brothers and sisters..(also in christ)…who are still trying to live out that horrible situation….I pray for you to rise up. I can not imagine what you have experienced….The Tv reports could NEVER convey what that must have been like to actually survive. Our govenment needs an overhaul…we need REAL God fearing, caring people, to lead our counrty!….New Orleans Should be up and running shining like a brand new penny in every nook and cranny with all the money they have supposedly shelled out!….All the Billions!!!…(yeah right)… that went into that city should have new homes on every destroyed block by now….how come they can build all those beautiful houses on TV in 7 days (Extreme MakeOver Home Edition)…yet they cannot rebulid a few more in 2 years????….Ray Nagan have seemed to become relaxed in his roll as Mayor….I saw him yesterday on the news so impressed by being in his boss’s company, he now makes excuses as to WHY the city hasn’t progressed…blaming it on being…”caught in the middle of politics”
Come On Ray…when they were trying to hang you out to dry…..You were all Gung Ho…gangsta style….”Get ya azzez down here and do summin!”…Now you’re wearing taylored suits…and letting the buck pass on the very people who put you in office!…..Ray…Get that fire back, Rebuild at a faster pace!……and make sure the people that want to go back home can AFFORD to!

  25. bsb1216

This was truly a sad and tragic moment in US history. The hurricane was a nuatural disaster but the way it was handled was truly the disastrous part. Many lives have been forever changed by this event, and I will continue to keep those affected in my prayers. It’s all about economics. Money makes the world go round. Poor people don’t count to the government and they proved it with their “fast” action in helping the victims of Hurrican Katrina. Shame on us America.

  26. I’M SORRY ANGEL BUT I’M WITH #10: YOUNGSAVAGE & #16 DINA JONES.

I MEAN, I’M GLAD THAT U FINALLY DID DECIDE TO POST IT UNLIKE ALL OF THE OTHER DUMB & UN-INFORMATIVE BLOGS… BUT AT THE SAME TOKEN Y’ALL WERE LATE WITH THIS ONE… WITH EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT IT ON TV AND ON RADIO YESTERDAY & ALL WEEK, ONE WOULDA THOUGHT THAT CL WOULDA CAUGHT ON TOO…

ON ANOTHER NOTE: THANKS FOR POSTING IT ANYWAY. I’VE WATCHED “WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE” AND HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING SPIKE & HEARING FROM HIM PERSONALLY ABOUT THE ISSUE & I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM HIM & FROM THE FILM.

PEOPLE WHO HAVEN’T SEEN IT, Y’ALL NEED TO DO SO IMMEDIATELY! YOU’LL LEARN SO MANY THINGS ABOUT OUR GOV’T THAT ARE SO SAD BUT TRUE.

  27. bambam

    @ #7

The crime rat there is INSANE. Within the last week, a family of 7 people were sitting in their front yard having a bar-b-que and a group of guys came up to rob them, made them lay down and shot all seven, killing two.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

  28. Coffeecolor

sorry for not spell checking-much love

  29. You know it’s been two years and the President has the nerve to pretend like he gives a damn about what happen down there! I mean at least sound like you’re sincere. But I think Kayne said it best…

  30. OH OK ANGEL (#20) THAT EXPLAINS IT… OUR BAD

  31. I’m from da N.O. and I really hate this time of year these days. I lived in New Orleans until August 28, 2005. I left the day before it went down. I lost a lot but it’s all material. If I could have my moms back (who passed shortly after the storm), I would lose it all again. My prayers are still with everyone that is still in the struggle. I miss home so much (I live in VA now) and although they consider this the south, it just isn’t the same as the deep south. There is nothing like the great city of New Orleans.

  32. bambam

    @ # 24 COFFEECOLOR

Tellin’ it like you know it!

  33. 2 years and thing still ain’t right. Ppl still living in a damn FEMA trailor…a crying shame!

  34. I really do wish people would stop forgetting about Mississippi. They got hit just as bad, the media only talks about LA because the levies broke (and I’m not downing their hardships) but the eye of the storm went right over Pass Chrisitan and Bay St.Louis, people there lost their homes as well but no one seems to care…..It’s sad because since there’s no media coverage those people have really been forgotten about.

This is a shame, Bush and the usa rush to give aid to other countries in a heartbeat, dumping billions into a war that I still don’t know what’s going on other innocent people getting killed. Our soliders could be here helping us rebuild this city. Immigrants coming to the us get better treatment and aid then we do. Better make sure you vote next year!

  36. IAMDARKAQUA

I went down for the Essence Music Festival in July….the soul of NO is still there. The government is full of shit before Katrina and post Katrina. Army Corp of Engineers are full of shit before Katrina and post Katrina. Its that simple. When have you seen the government rush down for anything if its not Florida or overseas????

The only thing I can say is go down to the NO and spend some MONEY!!! Tourism is there bread and butter….SPEND YA PESOS!!!! Spend ya money and don’t forgot like everything is cool….cause its not!! I hope HBO shows “When The Leevees Got Broke” again…Spike deserves a Pulitzer for THAT ONE!!!

  37. good post

If some of you were so concerned about this being posted yesterday than why didn’t you send the CL staff emails asking for a post. Or talk about it in the comment area like you do when Beyonce has another mishap. I knew for fact CL was going to make a post on Katrina because they always make sure to put up informative posts. Obviously some of you are quick to jump the gun and attack the staff when they are educating your ass!

As for the post at hand. I’m sad for everyone down there. I’m talking Mississippi and N.O.

  38. This is a really sad situation. I went to New Orleans to volunteer last February & even then 6 months later it looked pretty much the same as it had weeks after the levees “broke.” I put that in quotes because all the residents I came in contact with were convinced they were blown up, but that’s another story.

So many people down there are still suffering and lost everything they had, which in many cases wasn’t much to begin with. Many are wayward, suicidal, and have lost hope. If nothing else, hopefully it was a wake-up call for those who thought they were guaranteed anything from the US government. Now we are at the height of the Hurricane season with over 12 weeks remaining & the levees are in a much worse state than they were in 2005. At lease Bush still had the time to fly in again for a photo op.

  39. IAMDARKAQUA

OH AND PLEASE DON’T GET ME STARTED ON STATE FARM INSURANCE……if they shit don’t stink to high heaven!!!! Didn’t have flood insurance…you screwed!!

Didn’t have wind damage….you screwed!!! Paid 25+ on home insurance in New Orleans….YOUR ASS IS SCREWED!!! People only getting 50% or less on what they paid on those damn premiun….DAMN SHAME!!!

People still paying mortage, but don’t have the house to live in….DAMN SHAME!!!

ITS THE AMERICAN WAY…ALL DAY, EVERY DAY!!

  40. vexxed

Sent money/saying prayers/ keep this in the news until it is no longer news.

  41. kmniles

W.C.A. (White Corporate America) are just itching to steal this land straight from under the residents noses. I bet if Trump drew palns for a “New New Orleans” the shit would be plowed, leveled and thousands of men in hard hats with trucks would be building levees of super size to protect the billions of dollars invested for the resort like communities. But since it’s just a bunch of dispaced negroes and unfortunate whites who hang around them…whatever!

I had to stand up and applaud! I was floored when I heard how they did the people. But after doing a little research I found out they’d been doing this for years. People from Hurricane Hugo didn’t get their premiums worth either and the government ain’t doing a thing to them.

  43. Funny you should say that Trump does have something boiling down here at the moment. As someone living here it’s moving along at a snail’s pace but it’s moving. Now if the murder rate would only go down….

  44. I WAS IN N.O BACK IN JULY AND IT STILL LOOKED A MESS. IM GLAD DAT THE ONES THAT ARE STILL THERE GOT A PLACE TO STAY BUT IT MADE ME MAD THAT HALF THE PEOPLE IN THE CITY STILL LIVE IN FEMA TRAILERS….WHERE ARE OUR PRIORITIES??

  45. I never realized how wide and big that hurricane was. It damn near almost reached Michigan. I’m still amazed at how those black people down there were and continue to be dogged out by the US Government. Oh wait, I’m not surprised at all…

  46. Well I just want to say that this is truly truly sad and my prayers goes out to everyone involved I watched the doc. and I just cried I am not from there but I can only imagine what these ppl went through and are still going thru

  47. I absolutely enjoyed reading Barbara Bush’s comment about how all those people were better off living in that hella crowded football stadium b/c it was better than their pre-hurricane conditions. Some of the most evil, ugliest thoughts about her ran through my mind after I read that.

NILES, I’m from Charleston and was home during Hurricane Hugo…THIS RIGHT HERE…THIS RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW….THIS IS NOT THE SAME!!! We got alot of redneck REpublican deep up in SC….THIS CRAP THE GOVT DOING TO THE NO “AND” MISS would not have been tolerated. Ol Mayor Riley wasn’t playing that sh*t!!!

It has 25% to do with race and 75% to do with wage class and votes….that’s my opinion….since we having GROWN FOLKS TALK RIGHT NOW!!

  49. noeatingheretonight

I didn’t watch all this video the ones from when the hurricaane happened was enough to make me cry; bodies in the water, bodies rottening, that stadium story. to me it was the most mishandled natural catastrophe that I’ve seen in my lifetime. just sickening- made me feel so sad about humanity.

  50. YoungSavage

THANKS ANGEL, I UNDERSTAND!!!! JUST SO SAD THOUGH. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GURL.

  51. gorgeous chocolate pixie

i just watched the film last night and i cried, it very emotional I am still in disbelief our people were called refugee’s and if you look up other words that relaate this is what you get: >>>>>alien, boat person*, castaway, defector, derelict, deserter, displaced person, emigrant, escapee, evacuee, exile, expatriate, expellee, foreigner, foundling, fugitive, homeless person, leper, maroon, outcast, outlaw, pariah, prodigal, renegade, runaway, stateless person, émigré

This was not the case these people where only looking for some way to survive… my prayers are with everyone who lost someone or something.. Best wishes to everyone. I pray that they have begin to live again… peace and blessings

  52. bambam

You know shyt’s getting surreal when Sean Penn is traveling to Iraq and spittin’ his version of foreign policy.

Then he turns around flies to NO, rents a boat, and singlehandedly plucks Kartrina survivors out of the flood waters, with no regard to the toxins and diseases floating in the muck and mire.
Yeah, some might say that because he brought a camera crew it seemed self-serving, but I believe he wanted to chronicle what he saw as an injustice to the people of NO (the man has serious hate for Bush and his policies).

I give him serious props for that one.

  53. IAMDARKAQUA

the people criticizing Sean Penn need to shut the hell up!!! Were they down there pulling people from home, walking in water full of human body waste and dead bodies??? If not, SHUT THE HELL UP!!

As long as lives were saved…THAT’S THE “ONLY” THING THAT MATTERS!!!

People kill me with that mess…do you think the people he saved family’s care about him having a damn camera…PLEEEEEEEEZE!

  54. bambam

Other moments from the documentary I won’t forget are the segments with Terrance Blanchard and his mother returning to her damaged home, the woman who lost her 7 year old daughter, later identified by her book bag, and the story of the guy from The Wire and his father.

    Deep shyt, indeed.

WHEN KATRINA HAPPENED & THE LEVEES BROKE, I WATCHED IT ON TV IN SHOCK, LIKE MOST. THEN IT BECAME VERY REAL WHEN I VOULNTEERED AT THE VET’S COLLISIUM HERE (AZ), AND SAW REAL PEOPLE FROM N.O./MS FLOWN ALL THE WAY OUT HERE. WE HAD TO TAKE THEIR CLOTHING/SHOE SIZES THEN RUMMAGE THROUGH RACKS OF CLOTHES JUST TO TRY TO FIND SOMETHING CLOSE TO WHAT THEY COULD WEAR…CAN’T EVEN IMAGINE HAVIN TO UP & START ALL OVER AGAIN! YALL MOST DEF IN MY PRAYERS.

I hope that wasn’t for me, I was giving him high praise. If I’m speaking out of turn, I apologize.

    @ #36

I am with you on that! I am from Mississippi, and it’s like we didnt suffer through a hurricane! We lost a whole lot here! We suffered just like N.O. did! I agree it was just that the media didnt cover MS like they did N.O. There are still people living in FEMA trailers! There is still neighborhoods that have destructed homes! There are still people that are mourning the friends and relatives that theyve lost. There are still people that cant come back home because they have nothing! My heart goes out to everyone that went through this tragic storm. I just wish that people will just stop only mentioning N.O.
