JANELLE MONAE’S “METROPOLIS, SUITE I OF IV: THE CHASE”

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

jane.jpg

Janelle Monáe - Violet Stars Happy Hunting!

This week, Janelle Monáe releases the first suite of the epic story, Metropolis, her debut album, titled The Chase. Metropolis is a concept album, a futuristic take on 1927’s silent film, Metropolis, by Fritz Lang. Monáe, who has worked with on the acclaimed Idlewild album from OutKast, as well as Big Boi’s Got Purp, Vol. 2, has taken a new approach to releasing her album, in the form of suites. The Wondaland Arts Society will release a suite every three months, and a full length LP after each suite is released. The material from her debut is exciting and very high-energy, and is definitely a breath of fresh air. The album will available in select stores, in the official store and on iTunes.

Make sure you log on to the official store and order your copy of Metropolis, due out Friday, August 24 and log on to her MySpace for more releases and upcoming events.

I love Janelle Monae. I think that her style is inventive, and her voice is soo beautiful. I like her because she is a break from the ordinary, and her album art is hot too…..

Ms. Monae just won herself a new fan. After that Omarion and Bow Wow bullshit I started listening to this song with pretty low standards. I was pretty amazed though. Not only does it not sound like anything else I’ve been hearing recently (in a very good way) but if the rest of her material sounds like this, I can see her doin big things. Can’t wait to hear more from her…

I can understand where you are coming from, but maybe you should check her out on some of her more contemporary cuts, like the El Debarge cover that she did on Big Boi’s Got Purp? It’s called “Time Will Reveal”.

I really like this song. Its fresh and I like the fact that its something different but not trying so hard to be different. Its still has a very contemporary sound to it. If the rest of the album continues to sound like this song I think it could be a contender for a Grammy.

Ummm…yeah, I usually like non-mainstream and contemporary artists but I thinks she’s trying toooo hard to be different. I am the biggest supporter of “different” and underground music but her style seems forced, almost like this is a major gimmick. Her voice isn’t bad, I’d have to hear more before I go cop the whole CD.

@ KMNILES # 45 it’s 1,2,3,FOUR not fo, 5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12…and yes you did hear the counting of numbers from sesamestreet. Moving on this song is mediocre at best..the beat is ok..and her voice is nice..but those damn gay guys in the background have got to go! Other than that, I give it a 5/1/2 on a scale of 1-10. Besides I have never heard of this chick anyway..so I need to see more from her.

I actually like janelle song and voice. Although I do think at times on her myspace bulletins she goes overboard with this outerspace/1950’s stuff. Other than that her voice, talent, and enthusiasm alone she could possibly be a female Andre 300 mixed with Lauryn Hill if she gets into some neo-soul.

61.

theatldiva

Tuesday, August 21, 2007 /

SHE IS DEFINATELY TRYING TOO HARD.

SHE’S NOT THE FEMALE ANDRE 3000…KELIS IS.

AND I AGREE WITH ONE OF THE PREVIOUS COMMENTS….BJORK DID THIS ISH SO MUCH BETTER IN 1997.

NOT A GOOD LOOK.

I like the “Lettin Go” Janelle.
I can dig the different sound that she is bringing but at the same time, kinda like what #35 said.. is it from her heart? I love the face that her writing skills are sick but these lyrics are a little to “Atlanta” for me…

NEXT SINGLE?

Wonder what ever happened to Kina (from Brownstone) who made steps into the rock arena a little while back. Like Res, this sister was giving it original, but didn’t really catch on.

I guess it’s hard to break out the black alternative with the current state of black radio.

I am totally into different types of music especially trip hop/down tempo (Masssive Attach, Zero 7, BJORK ), but this didn’t catch my ear at all. As a visual artist, I think she is stunning, but I haven’t heard anything of hers and moves me. When I first saw that poster the first thing that I thought of was Bjork (All is full of love video) I think she wants be be the black bjork.

69.

This was ok, I wasn’t thrilled by it at all. I did actually like the Sesame Street line though. That was very catchy.

I believe this girl is very talented and has a beautiful voice, but this song is not her. It seems like an Andre 3000 song or something.

I think that Janelle Monae is great, I 1st heard her on the Got Purp? LP and have been waiting on her alblum to drop ever since. I was going crazy looking for her stuff on every website I could think of. Now that it’s out I can relax am wait on my boy Scar to show himself. Purple Ribbon is going to take over really soon and I can’t wait for the world to get onboard. By the way her music isn’t going to be for everyone but I don’t think anyone can deny regardless of what she sings about she has one of the most beautiful voices out right now.

people have to make comparisons becuase some negroes can’t comprehend anything out of the relm of songs like “same girl”. and they get all confused and scared when something new comes along and they cant wrap their mind around it. Its like a defense mechanism that some black folks use to justify liking it . These are the same people that consider T-pain an r&b artist.

it’s on some gnarles barkley stuff and i like it. i didn’t like everything on that gnarles barkely but “crazy” and some of the other tracks on that album more than made for some of the bad ones. i see where she’s going with it and i like it. we say we’re tired of beyonce (and yes i brought her name up, since she’s supposedly what’s wrong with music today) but when this girl attempts to bring something different to the table y’all won’t even give her a chance calling her a wannabe andre3000, well what’s wrong with a female andre3000? she can do the same stuff he’s doing but do it from a female perspective. again, i like this and would buy the album once i heard some more cuts from the album. i’m just now starting to buy cd’s again, and i refuse to buy an album i haven’t heard in it’s entirety, so keep posting her songs up brian so i can know all of what to expect. take care y’all.

115.

I don't know

Tuesday, August 21, 2007 /

Actually I’m kinda diggin it too. The song makes a lot more sense when you take into account this is her interpretation of the movie “metropolis” which is about a cyborg that is hunted down and destroyed . There’s more to the movie of course but that’s a part of it.

I dont know about the song, sounds abit contrived…BUT her voice is definetly whats up. Plus if Gwen, Nelly, and Fergie can sing about retarted stuff then so can she!

Oh and here is Ciara’s official cant leave em alone remix.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/32363721dcfbde/

Its aight, sounds like a early 90’s song or something, and she added some add libs
And atleast 50 aint in it.

She’s dope & her voice is really beatiful. But she’s gonna have a heard time breaking into “urban”. Hopefully, she can do what Kelis did and develop a strong Euro base and then slowly break into urban.

She’s too talented to go unnoticed though.

I LIKE JANELLE MONAE BECUZ SHE’S DIFFERENT. BUT KELIS WAS THE FIRST SISTER WITH THE OUTER SPACE SH!T (”MARS”, “SHOOTING STARS”, “TRIOLOGY” , ETC. ) THE CYPERHOP REMIX IS BETTER THOUGH. AND YEAH HER GOT PURP SONGS ARE STRAIGHT TOO.

I am a fan of alternative r’n'b (remember Kelis’ first release?) but this does NOT do it for me. She’s trying to be all things to all people without being a Cassie or Yucky Yaki Beyonce.
I admire her drive but won’t be picking this up (or even downloading) anytime soon.

i love her style. this song is wild. if you like this style of music, you’ll like this artist named res. she’s very different too. but this woman here is amazing. she’s like an female andre 3000….and i love me some outkast…church…..

# 10 and what singers are you talking about??? Beyonce, Nicole (whats the hell. who cares about her name) Mya, please, Ciara, she has 50 following her, so her career is doomed, it seems that real singers ae in short supply. I think she reminds me of 3000, his style is so different and people took a little time to get use to it, but great music either way, but #10 you live in a free country and you thoughts are yours and respected. sorry if i came across hard.

This sounds like that wierd off the wall shit (album having a futuristic theme) like songs that Bjork has done. I love Bjork’s randomness so this chick might be worth checking out. I have to hear other songs from her first.

her music is creative and inventive. sounds better than 90% of the cookie cutter R&Bish songs on the radio now. Too bad she prolly won’t sell well though, to many people still caught up in the matrix of black radio.

Yo this is FIYAH! I love the whole concept album idea of basically telling a tale through different chapters and songs. This particular song is so hot to me though. I have been listening to this track back to back. Get into it!

Well to the ones who are like, “She’s weird; this is wat kids listen to these days?” Yes it is wat we listen to. why? because we’ve obviously evolved from th 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s. We’re in a new era and to me Janelle Monae is introducing that new era to the world. Her voice is beautiful, her image is different from other typical artists now-a-days. Also to # 35, you can tell this music is completely Janell’s style and from the heart; way more so than the noise Kelis makes. OPEN YA MINDS PEOPLE. TIMES ARE CHANGING!

So, she works with Big Boi? Hmm I guess that explains why she sounds like the female carbon copy of Andre 3000. DOn’t believe me, check out Andre 3000’s cartoon soundtrack. I still like the song tho. Lol, maybe because I like Andre 3000 and his soundtrack…

I think this will be one of the artists that either does very well commercialy (meaning they’ll Brand the crap out of her because she’s cute and different) or we won’t see at all in 3 three years. Let’s be honest she doesn’t have a great voice, it’s ok to say the least, it’s not that different than most singers on a stage show in college. The style is basically Andre 5000 from outkast put in a girl. True she says some outspoken statements to match her over the top character, but that doesn’t make it original. I’m not sure if people are just so use to seeing what we think is normal on tv so when an artists steps onto it that they find unique for one second they start calling them ORIGINALS, this girls is not an original, she’s a make up of several strong factors in the entertainment industry, Grace Jones, Andre 5000, and James Brown’s dancing (not by any means her singing) still vocally she doesn’t compare to any great singers, and thats just being honest.
