KANYE ON HIS CLOTHING LINE, Pastelle
COMPLEX: Talk to me about your clothing line, Pastelle. We’ve had countless conversations about it, you’ve talked about your aspiration to get in this industry and be taken seriously. What’s going on with Pastelle today, why is it taking so long?
KanYe West: Just getting the right designs. It’s a gift and a curse. You’ve got all eyes on you, so if you deliver something great, it’s gonna get held as, “Oh, it’s supposed to be great.” And even if it’s good or it’s OK or something, it’s gonna get bashed. There were phases where I could just do the bear on a Polo and it would’ve made $100 million. At a certain point. But I always say I was a designer before I was a rapper, and I really wanted to get into design. So then, trying to start designing and goin’ with my girl down to the fashion district and stuff, and looking at fabrics and stuff like that, I’m like, “Oh, shit. This is real.” I’ve learned so much about materials and fabrics and applications and sequence and shiny fabrics and fits and all type of shit. [ READ MORE ]

COMPLEX: What’s the most hurtful thing that was said?
CASSIE: That I slept my way into the industry. I think that’s really vicious. If it had nothing to do with talent, at least it had something to do with charm. But it was never jumping into bed with somebody. That’s just gross. As far as people saying I couldn’t sing, I did a bad job so I couldn’t hate. I was in a tough place for a second. I got really sick and was in the hospital in like November or December. It was stress and exhaustion, and I ended up going home to Connecticut. [Puffy] actually called me up when I was at home and asked me what I wanted to do. I was like, “I want to do another album.”

Not trying to get confrontational or anything, but why should a gorgeous young woman like Cassie (who is a great model btw) get a chance to record ANOTHER album, when she clearly has no vocal talent. What about all the other young women out there (who are indeed, the total package) who are trying to break into the recording industry? Why waste money on Cassie, when music moguls can spend better time finding the next Whitney or Lauren Hill? R&B needs to regain its soul….because its nothing but watered down hip hop/pop crap. But that is just my opinion.

I didn’t read all of her interview, but I had heard her say before that people were turned onto her by her looks… So, it’s sorta like she isn’t trying to get over… She mostly talks though, wouldn’t call that singing… Maybe she can do that, sorta do the mechanical, sexy-voice choruses in songs????

@11 because it’s sheer capitalism… always a market in vanity… that’s why they go Beyonce crazy, it’s like she CAN actually sing, so it’s easier to pretend they’re serious about her acting/fashion design/writing skills. Cassie- read the interview it was very candid. Give it another try-seems like you had a lot of lessons learned from your first time around and the vocal coaches will do you good.

I think the whole thing with Cassie was like Puff was trying to make her the next Aaliyah. Think about it, she was marketed as a dancer (in her 1st video) and her fashion and hair was similar to Aaliyah. But I think it all backfired when people actually saw her perform live. She was horrible, weak vocals with no stage presence at all. Then when the very first me and you video came out, is when alot of people who were trying to remain her fan, just lost respect for her. That first video was 2 steps away from a porn video, and she wonders why people were saying she slept her way to a record deal. I remember in that video, her pulling down some dudes pants, and her face being all close to his penis like she was about to give him a blow job. Then she was in her panies and bra in the video. It was disgusting, and nothing I want my young daughter to see.
With that being said, I think she tried to rectify it by comming out with A Long Way To Go a kind of more pop, kid friendly tune and video. But folks still wasn’t buying it. However, I do admire her wanting to come back and try again. So well see……

@8 i totally agree with you. but if ever, they should have not let her get a deal in the first place. im just saying, now that shes already willing to record and i obviously cant do anything against it, she should at least save uf the pain and learn how to sing. we cant prevent it happening, but if its gonna happen at least do it right.
of course its a waste of many, theres so many ppl out there that deserve a deal and its sad to see ppl like cassie gettin one so easily.
oh and its sad cause shes not even dancing. i remember ciara not being able to sing at all at first, but she stood up cause of her dancing abilities wich are great. she did learn to properly sing with this new album in my eyes. cant play her.
