M.I.A.’S KALA

Thursday, August 2, 2007

M.I.A. - Boyz

M.I.A. is back with her second album, Kala which hits stores on August 21. Her first album, Arular was a huge success in the United States and garnered her a lot of endorsements using a couple of her songs. I was actually surprised by how well she was recieved. Producing and writing all of her own music, people just took a liking to her. However, with all of this success, people were wondering what M.I.A.’s sophomore set was going to sound like.

She actually worked with a few American producers this time around, such as Bangladesh (who produced the hit “Bossy” for Kelis), and Timbaland. She still used some of her own production, and it seems that her album varies in sound a lot more than Arular did, but sticks to the same format. I will admit that Kala is a little shotty and has some holes in it. I definitely saw where she was going, and with that being said, the album has some stand-out, fun tracks.

M.I.A. - Birdflu (full) - download / alternate
M.I.A. - Jimmy (full) - download / alternate
M.I.A. - Mango Pickle Down River (full) - download / alternate
M.I.A. - $20 (full) - download / alternate
M.I.A. feat. Timbaland - Come Around (full) - download / alternate

For more information on M.I.A. and Kala, log on to her official website, MySpace. If you like what you’ve heard, make sure you pick up Kala on August 21.

Wow! I think it’s funny that you’d call her work shotty ( I heard the whole album) when this is who GWEN STEFANI, FERGIE and KELIS will be swagger jacking in 08! She may seem odd and shotty to some because she pulls from idigenous cultures (african/hindi/aboriginee) and sounds. Shes a real artist in that, like Bjork, she’s her own person….has her own sound….she’s not selling sex…does not have weave down to her ass or her ti**ties out and is not trying to break a glass with her vocal riffs….shes a muscian…shes about creating a sound…not joining a gospel choir…sometimes i wish we would open our minds to something different…i see many of us are up on it (high five) but the fact that she’s not on BET should tell you something…it means she might actually be saying something…BET is not one to put anybody different on there…no…they put the same sounding…same looking artists on air because they’re about following the formula…the same format..(which is really just a brown version of everything on MTV) but alas…the minute a person not of color does it….Fergie…Gwen Stefani (who is the ultimate culture vulture and swagger-jacker!) they become soul queens…or we’re impressed with what they bring to the table! ugh! Sorry but it just makes me sick!

Different doesn’t necessary mean its “hot”.Music is music and if your music is good, its good.If its ok its ok.People do different things in music everyday and they don’t get no recognition or they don’t get heard. It is what it is.

#19, what are you talking about? LOL. I love MIA. I just said that in entirety, the album is not as complete to me as “arular” was. I wasn’t saying that it wasn’t a good album, I just said it has some empty spaces and it’s not as fluid as “arular” was.

I listened to a little over a minute and only heard her say about 4 words the whole time. I’ll admit that I do like some of her stuff (mainly the beats) but like someone said earlier different does not mean good. I don’t hear the lyrical talent that yall are proclaiming…

31.

wordblaze

Thursday, August 2, 2007 /

Brian I hear you…i just know that becasue we have been so programmed by the BET aesthetic and the same ten songs on radio that we immediately deem different as bad, not fully digesting it….

and @30….you might not hear it right off…but she talks about oppression and poverty…pain…racism…ALL kinds of stuff that her home folk and other oppressed folk experience in so called third world countries…but like a real scientist…she doesnt hit you over the head with it ’cause she knows she would be labeled ‘preachy’…she’s like let me get a dope beat…a catchy hook and pull mofos in that way…have the time we dont hear lyrics or realize what they mean til later (I never knew what the ‘give me what you cant get back’ song meant til i got grown) i taught a group of girls who proclaimed that LAFFY TAFFY was their song! Then when i bought the lyrics in they were all mad and offended…so i think MIA (even her name has a political slant) is going for feel first and content second…

and listen it aint like i cant get crunk with the rest….i LOVE dancing….but im glad that theres more in the landscape of music….a different color, sound, edge…knamean? thats what i miss about early nineties HIP HOP

aight getting off soapbpx…(its rented by the hour and i didnt sell enuff beanpies to cover an hour long dissertation

PS if you want some FIRE AZZ CONTENT check out Jay Electronica..or Donnie…or Georgia Anne Muldrowe….she was down with Platinum Pied Pipers….and SaRa…her writing is FULL BLOWN..(wrote, composed, engineered, produced her first album at 20) just something you don’t hear alot…she kinda reminds me of what Stevie was bringing to my parents generation

32.

I’ve heard of this artist before. I can say that I will give her props for the beats…. the lyrics…NOPE! I am open to all types of creative music, but if I cannot understand her lyrics and the point of the songs, so I will pass! It’s funny how many people will critize others for not liking music they like, but this sytle is not everyone’s style so…OH WELL!! I think MIA would get her point across more if she would speak clear and not have so many beats that overpower her lyrics. To each its own!

WORDBLAZE: I was gonna come on here and give my 5 pence, but it seems u done it for me already. Could not have said it any better. I just wish more people in our community had a more open mind to music. That is to say not that we always agree with the music but can class it as different and except it for what it is instead of downcasting it. But hey, everyone’s entitled to an opinion and maybe what I am wishing towards is what would be in an ideal world, and we all know we do not live in that.

__________________________________________

Please say it again. It amazes me everyday how shallow some people are. Many said that they couldn’t understand the girl but hell…most of us couldn’t understand Bone Thugs and Harmony or Twista but still bang their tracks. We might have had to play it back a few times but we eventually got the lyrics (well at least I did, LOL).

There is a lot of International music that bangs. If some don’t hear it on a radio or see it on a video, they’ll automatically dismiss it. The majority of artists in the states got the same beat, lyric biting and exact style. Perfect examples-Kelis rocked the bob cut first…then came Rihanna and now Trina. And it’s funny to me because they pay people for a sense of style in fashion/beauty and creativity. Another example…”Snap Ya Fingers” remix began with I believe Lil John, next Dem Franchize Boys, T-Pain and the list goes on. I give the girl props for being different and being outside the box.

Who? Brian you say that her debut “Arular was a huge success in the United States”, I find that hard to believe. Did you mean the UK?

I consider myself a music fanatic in EVERY genre and I have never heard of this lady.

I haven’t listened to any songs yet (still at work) but I will def check out the tracks when I get home. I do wanna agree with 19 regarding a lot of young black folk not being opened minded to different types of music. It’s always beauty/fineness and selling sex BEFORE talent.

why when people dont like an artist who is “different”,we have to be close-minded. are you kidding me?like i said,i like the beats but she aint saying more than 10 words throughout the song and i can barely understand them.its not close-minded,its called having a preference.and i dont watch bet unless its my last resort so i havent been brainwashed or programmed by it….i just dont see myself liking her just because she’s different. i commend her for that though.

For someone who traveled/lived around the world, this is alright. And I’m open to all music. Her music is aight and I’m not close-minded at all.Simply, I just don’t understand what she is saying.Just because someone don’t like it don’t mean its bad, or they sit and accept what is only on BET, its just people had difference of opinion on what “they” like.Don’t make generalizations unless you for sure. Most of the audience that do watch BET is not just black people.Theres different people of many colors that probably pass on this doesn’t make them close-minded.

I agree with some of you all. Disliking M.I.A. does not have to equate to being close minded. However, yall know dang well half the mess they play on the radio and t.v. that gets called hip hop is barely coherent….audible at best. You can groove to ay bay bay all day, but when a chick from the U.K. with a Sri Lankan background get dismissed cuz you cant understand her….since when has that stop mofos fmo rockin and popin their hips. I admit it took me a few listens to get her but like most hip hop, it takes more than 1, 2…hell even 5 listens to appreciate a track. Everytime I listen to Arular and now Kala I hear something fresh and thaz the beauty of a good artist. Folks open your minds the world doesnt just consist of r&b/hip-hop/pop get some culture geesh lol….
