MORE ON EMILY KING + ANOTHER SONG

Thursday, August 30, 2007

Hey guys, we got a lot of emails asking for MORE Emily King. Initially, we thought most of you guys already knew about her since we did an “ARTIST TO WATCH” post on her music earlier this year (guess we were wrong! lol). Also, I recommend you check out that great album review post Brian put up earlier this week. He streamed two songs from her new album, East Side Story (IN STORES NOW).

Her artist EPK is located above for your viewing pleasure and I also added another one of her songs entitled “Colorblind,” after the cut.

Emily King - Colorblind

Emily King’s debut album, East Side Story is IN STORES NOW and make sure you check her myspace page.

I actually bought her album yesterday after I saw that album review post. The album is AMAZING! I can’t believe J Records didn’t promote her hard.

Anyone who is into a jazzy blues R&B acapella mix of music - this album is for you.

I didnt know about her until I saw her picture on itunes…I like her voice. I know that she isnt getting good promotion…I guess you got to have mainstream rappers on your cd to get some airplay. smh

I love ma’s music she is dope as hell. And refreshin, im sick of all the beyonces rihannaz and ciaraz…we need someone who isnt afraid to be and sound different. Not feelin like they need the weaves, stripper shoes, and half azz clothin to make it. But, a nice a voice, beautiful sounds and good everyday lyrics for everyday people like myself. I hope she sticks around, because im really feelin her and I love her song with Biggie, “walk in my shoes.” Thats my second anthem, next to “Miseducation of Lauryn hill.”

I saw this video like 4 months ago on youtube, I’ve been following her from day one, she’s a hell of a singer, musician and songwriter. I hope she goes far and that people really support the album.

When I click on the arrow to find out who is this Emily King person is my first thought “Alicia Keys on a guitar.” I like the walk in my shoe song.

I hate when singers feel good about their record deal and then get no promotion.
If you ask me the best young singers out there now is fantasia, lauren hill, chrisette michele, lil mo and ms.emily king herself.
These singers sing heartfelt music, it is so sad you have to use a rapper these days to go mainstream.
But you know sometimes when these singers are not overexposed or overrated I believe they will be remembered for their unique talent.eg.aretha franklin, gladys knight, patti labelle just to name a few.

All the best to miss king.

I just don’t feel her, y’all tried to sell me on Amy Winehouse and she ended up being just another Whiny dopehead. Nope, not falling for the banana in the tailpipe.

Winehouse makes great music, but she doesn’t fit into a “Role Model” category.

Anyway, I love this chick. Real refreshing.

yo i love emily’s music she has many different sounds . i just wish she would have had better promotions . especially because i feel her music can transcend alot of barriers and she has marketability. , she is a cool ass person too, very humble , funny and down to earth . so is her brother . my boy sings back up for her and i met her when she performed for the DJ premier party sponsored by bombay sapphire and she killed it …

i initially thought the same as someone else stated with her giving off the alicia keys on guitar vibe , i think thats why Clive Davis was the one to sign her and initially saw the talent. but i think when you actually listen to her music you can hear the dissension between the two , i think the similarities really are present because of their upbringings and diversity .. Alicia was in hells kitchen while emily was in the village not that far and both grew up culturally diverse .. just making way for great music and content.. cop that album definitely. i really see her going somewhere though if she gets the right markets , her album will definitely be one of tohose you can pick up a few years from now and you can throw on and its still relative

I don’t like the way Winehouse sounds singing. I don’t like the way this chick sounds singing. Just because it’s different, doesn’t make it sound good (to me). Now don’t get me wrong, sometimes different is good…. Love /Bhamadia/ Janell/Joi/ lots of “different artists… I just don’t feel this chick…. I am allowed to not feel her.
There are too too many good and different artist that don’t get any shine for me to bandwagon this one. My bad.

(in her heyday, this chick couldn’t hang with a Teena Marie poster)

Okay, so I bought her cd last night off the strength of U & I, which was posted here the other day and that I LOVE. But I have to say I’m a little disappointed. There are only maybe one to three more songs MAX that I like and would listen to besides U & I. The rest of it is mediocre regardless of what genre you place her in.

I think her voice sounds more like Tweet than Alicia Keys or Teena Marie or anyone else.

@ 21, I feel you.

I bought the album off of that song as well. The first listen was wack to me, but I played it again today and it just grew on me. Give it another try I really think you will like it.

If you bought the album, how did you like that ‘Ride with Me’ song? I think it was the best song on the album.

*raises hand* I PAID ATTENTION TO THE “ARTIST TO WATCH” POST and i’ve been watching her ever since. i love love love ms. king and i need to buy that album. Now if lauryn was in her right mind they would do a duet and all would be right with the world.

give me a break, this chick is not soulful! i swear some of you obviously don’t know what soulful music or jazz truly sounds like. How dare anyone credit her as a “jazz” or “soulful artist’. Puhleeze! I suggest you listen to some Patti Austin, Kem, or Rachelle Ferrell for starters. Hell, even go listen to some jill scott. i agree that she has a nice voice, but soulful she is not. stop the delusions, people!

JRecordsInsider

Thursday, August 30, 2007 /

Clive Davis didn’t sign Emily King…her A&R, Peter Edge, signed her. But as you can read from most of the comments, Emily is a dope artist, it’s just the poor marketing and promotion team at J Records can’t seem to get creative and start thinking out of the box to find effective ways to have her music heard and appreciated by the masses. Message to Clive Davis: Fire most of the people working there cause they aren’t doing their jobs! This is the label’s first “urban” release since December of last year. That’s quite pitiful. J Records is looking mighty weak…and that Alicia record isn’t even that crazy…everyone is just hype, because it’s Alicia Keys.

@ #28

I see you are here to cause trouble..

The girl is half black and she has Italian, Polish and American Indian.. Personally if I were her, I would stop trying to be a multicultural artist and stick to the community.

Everyone else will disown you, but not black folks!

I got the album and it okay, not exactly blowing me away. I like her voice though, it has a nice tone to it. I wish some of these artist would quit being so focused on writing their own music though. That’s what songwriters are for. Her material sounds very amatuer. She can use a few more class A songwriters. BTW, she looks JUST like her mom.

I was listening to her album earlier, she has actually put out a solid album. I hope people don’t sleep on her like they did for many artists, including Leela James.

She did sound like Ayo on a few songs though, especially the ones where the acoustic guitar stood out.

You reminds me of two people in the industry. Teena Marie and Alicia Keys. The woman is talented and I’m feelin her vibe. She’s definately worth the listen.

Like I said in the other post about her, it’s not about her not being talented, but she’s not doing anything that people would be going crazy over if she wasn’t more “blue-eyed” soul (yea, I know she’s mixed, but what do u see when u look at her?) The crazy thing is that every “black female artist who gets any play is only a shade or 2 darker than her. Like I also said before, If Kelly Rowland or any brown, non-mega star singer had come out with this material it would not be having the same effect. Black ppl just get happy as all hell the minute a white person does something “black”. Five dollars for the first person who can say that ain’t true. THEY SAY THE “NEO-SOUL” MVMT IS DEAD BECUS EVERY1 WANTS TO BE DROPPIN AND POPPIN AND WHAT NOT, BUT IT LOOKS LIVE SOUL MUSIC IS ALIVE AND WELL, IF YOU’RE WHITE.

I guess you can say that blue-eyed soul gets our attention more than black folks, but you can’t say that blue-eyed soul is a guarantee of success: look at Esthero. Even Robin Thicke’s current success was a surprise since his first single–produced by The Neptunes and featuring Lil’ Wayne–flopped hard and it was only his pushing “Lost Without U” to AC stations that kept him afloat. Amy Winehouse hasn’t even gone platinum in the US yet. Does Jonny Lang get a whole bunch of attention from mainstream media? The fact that Emily King isn’t getting any promotion from J Records is proof that “blue-eyed soul” isn’t the ticket to fame and fortune a lot of people tend to complain it is.

And BTW, about darker-skinned sistas singing soul and jazz, why aren’t you asking why all the darker-skinned singers like Kelly or even Brandy back in her heyday, aren’t singing jazz. In terms of Amy Winehouse and Emily King being inspired by jazz? How many black people are raised on jazz as a whole? How many black people run to jazz concerts in comparison to the white people who attend any jazz festival they can travel to?

You can’t blame the minute amount of black neo-soul and neo-jazz songstresses when black folks don’t even CARE to raise their children on this so-called “black” music. Not to mention that most black people who want to sing just want to be singers–that’s it. Just sing and expect to get rich and flash bling. There is a lack of emphasis on the ARTIST portion of the word “music artist” amongst most wannabe black singers and rappers. So don’t blame the fact that people are white or near-white on why they get exposure.
