A great man once said opinions are like a**holes…everyone’s got one. However, some people like to let their butt out for from time to time - take Polow Da Don.

Since the controversy surrounding his comments towards white women and black women, Polow Da Don has been under hell fire. Allhiphop linked up with the producer for his response to the feedback he received against his views and being dubbed the “King Of White Girls”:

AllHipHop.com: So do you stand by your statements?

Polow Da Don: Oh definitely. It has nothing to do with me, these effects. I didn’t make this stuff up. Only thing where people got misled is that I said I prefer a White woman, and that’s not the case at all. Really, I date all types of women. It was a stage in my life when I started dating a lot of White women- that was just a stage in my life. Right now, I date girls I like. I don’t base it off of any shade or color when I meet a girl now. They linked my comments about the Black family and Black women with the “King of the White Girls” and [the fact that] I dated White girls. That’s where it all went wrong. So when I was comparing Black women to White women, that has zero to do with me dating White women. What I was saying was factual though. Ladies and gentlemen agreed, n****s and b******s got mad.


Polow once again did not hold his tongue with his opinion in the interview. He went on to clarify himself saying this:

It’s not that I’m attacking Black women; Black women have done this to themselves. Well I’m not going to say that. They didn’t do it to themselves, but they are a part of the cycle, which means they’re not helping the situation by not looking at the problem. So let’s take White people out of it, and take any other race out of it. I used White women as a comparison because so many Black people get mad because I say that I’m the “King of the White Girls.” First of all, saying that I’m the “King of the White Girls,” how can you find that disrespectful as a Black woman? You are an idiot. If anything, I should have Klansmen feeling disrespected; I should have White women feeling disrespected as far as a Black man saying he’s the king of the White women. It’s not disrespectful to Black woman at all. If a white man says, “I’m the King of Black women,” would [Black women] be mad at the White man? Of course you would be, and so would Black men. You think a White woman would be mad at a White man saying, “I’m the king of Black women?” No, they won’t be mad. So I don’t understand how a Black woman can feel offended by me saying I’m the “King of the White Girls.” I didn’t come up with that. Like I said, a White man came up with that title for me. But, Black women do need to get their shit together, period, point blank. And if you’re in denial of that, you are part of the problem.

AllHipHop.com: So we discussed how some Black have not really learned to be men yet. Do you think that may be a reason why some Black women have a problem being submissive to that kind of man?

Polow Da Don: No. Women have been taught to not trust us. Women have run the household for so long, they’ve been taught to be independent. So when a man comes in and tries to run the household, they are kind of fighting for that spot, so to speak. There’s gonna be a little resistance before a woman just let’s it all go because they’ve seen their mothers be strong, and grandmothers be so strong, and they taught them to be the same way. So when you meet a guy you’re gonna challenge him. Take somebody like Oprah (Winfrey.) To me Oprah is a bad example. To me Oprah being titled as the most powerful Black woman in America, and she doesn’t have a man… To me that’s sending a bad signal to all young Black women. That’s saying the most powerful Black woman in America didn’t need a man. You telling me that’s a role model?

I agree with his intentions but, you are always gonna run into people who are upset with your comments when you generalize so much. He should have reworded what he said because those characteristics he talked about does not apply to ALL Black women or ALL White women.

If ya’ll read that whole ALLHIPHOP interview, he talked about how his parents have been married for 40 years, and how most Black women and men grow up in a 1 parent household, blah blah blah… Hey Polow: I’m a black woman, I grew up with both my parents (who have been married over 30 years now), I’m educated and I can honestly say that THE WAY YOU SAID WHAT YOU SAID WAS IGNORANT. You have a point, don’t get me wrong, you just need to work on how you get that point across, because you offended a lot of Black women.

Had to comment again, if you read CLOSELY in the full interview, he actually praises black women by saying that they have the power to change how some men act. For example, he said if women stopped dating drug dealers, then no man would sell drugs. If they were not attracted to material things, then men would not engage in illegal activity to achieve these material things to impress the women. SOME Black women do need to get their shit together just like SOME Black men need to get their shit together. If any female on this board believes that all Black women got it going on simply because they’re “sistahs,” they’re sadly mistaken.

After reading the entire interview I’ve concluded that Polow is confused like a lot of Black men. He wants Black women to be the backbone and solve the problems facing th Black family but he doesn’t put any of the responsibility on the man for helping to create the problem in the first place. No accountability. This is so typical of his generation. Always blame someone else for your shortcomings and lash out at those around you for enabling you. But he’s only saying what a lot of Black men are feeling. Brothers want women to be accountable for their screw-ups because they can’t do for themselves. “I can’t get a job, girl. Why you let me sit on this couch all day?” lol. How about everybody just take responsibility for their own actions?

I don’t get that his mother is Black because he never mentions it. He only mentions how she was born in Japan. So that alone tells me that he can’t provide any real perspective of being raised by a Black woman — only a Black man. Secondly, if his father is Black, and his mother is Japanese, that explains a lot about his mentality also. Having lived in Japan I understand that culture all too well. A lot of Black men who prefer a more submissive and subservient woman will go after someone who’s raised traditionally in that culture. This is probably where he gets his ideas from. His statements in this interview are just as ignorant, if not even more. He says that black women are brought up not to trust their men. I DISAGREE because if you look at it, alot of black women are raising their children as single moms and dad is not around. As adults we are indeed intitled to our own opinions. I guess he feels the way he does b/c of his experiences just like we do as black woman. To all the ladies I know how hard it is out there dealing with these boys that expect to be respected and treated like a man. The truth of the matter is as black people in general I feel like we are taught from birth to be strong and make a way when there is no way……A lot of us are very opinionated b/c of this factor. We are very independent and anything or person we see as a threat we tend to attack. This is why there is so much discrimination withthin our own race whether it is b/c of gender or shades of skin. Anyway I think someone earlier commented and said that if this does not apply to you then dont get mad. Some of it does apply to me b/c I am very strong and independent and so is my Husband. So in areas we do clash but, I feel that the thing that holds us together is that we understand that we are struggling for the same thing. An opportunity in this world due to the fact that we are a minority and a better life for our child than the one that we had; and most of all we have geniune love.
Overall comments like Polows does not uplift us b/c he does not mention any solution just the issue at hand. It seems as though he has alot of hate in him towards black women for whatever reason. The part that I honestly found offensive was not all the negative things he said about black woman but, when he offended Oprah. If anything she is the epitome of a black role model. I wonder if he would have said that if she was a black man. In conclusion that’s all. Peace.

I do agree with certain things he said..my only problem with what he said is the way he said everything he said…and the fact that he stereotyped black women! GRANTED much of it does pretain to most black women…it doesnt pretain to all. I went through a phase where i only dated white girls. My momma was going crazy. I thought, it took a village to raise a child. Oprah doesn’t embrace men (hmmm, wonder why). They need the same opportunities she’s giving those girls in Africa, probably even more so. Believe it or not, we need men as much as they need us. By neglecting black men, we are setting ourselves up for failure. We eagerly celebrated each Kwanzaa and were taught to be active in performance arts.Anyway growing up in Philly we were exposed to horrible things. You know that. That is his choice but, growing up in a city where you were proud to be black, it is uncommon….We pride ourselves in Neosoul, jazz, (some of us muslims), and rich history etc. I am a product of being bi-racial but, at the end of the day I am black and Spanish. I would never say that I prefer one race over another. I feel like that is a harse statement to make. To belittle black woman is not part of the solution but, the problem. We could sit here and make generalizations all day but, what is the solution. In conclusion I love my “BLACK” man and I would not change anything about him b/c that is what makes him unique. Having quoted that, I really believe that the standard (from Biblical standpoint) has not been met or isn’t being met, mostly by the men who say they need a woman to “be in her place.” From a woman’s perspective, how can a man lead when he allows himself to be led the wrong way? How can he carry my house when his own house — before I have even entered it — wasn’t intact? If a man says he wants a good Christian woman, is he himself being a good Christian? If a man claims to love and respect God, is he being respectful of God by disrepecting women, God’s creation? What examples does he set for a woman to follow if he looks to be taken seriously? These are all questions that a REAL woman who is serious about committing and submitting to a REAL man SHOULD ask herself before she even goes there.

Black men can blame a lot of things on society: the white man, slavery, etc… and rightfully so. But at what point do Black men stop talking and start doing? I can’t stand to be around brothers who are always claiming that the white man is holding them down, yet they never try to get up! This is the plight that women face with submission. You cannot allow someone to teach you, lead you, protect you, provide for you, sustain you and carry you when they can’t and haven’t even done it for themselves or someone else.

Personally, I’ve been fortunate enough to know men (platonic or otherwise) that I would submit to 100 times over. And this all goes to the company I keep. I’ve said that for so long. Men today fail to realize that they need each other to teach each other. Yes, they are bonding, just the wrong way. THE SUBMISSIVE WIFE, MODEL WOMAN AND MODERN WOMAN

This seems to be the place where some controversy enters. Submit? What does that mean? According to Webster’s Dictionary to submit means “to present or refer to others for decision, consideration, etc. To yield to the action, control power, etc. of another or others, give in; also, to subject or allow to be subjected to treatment, analysis, etc. of some sort: often used reflexively. To be submissive is having or showing a tendency to submit without resistance; docile; yielding.”

Does that mean that we wives are to sit in the corner and never say a word? That we can’t make any major decisions in my marriage? That we had become a second-class citizen? That is not the way women of today are encouraged or taught, at home, school or in the workplace, to act. This is the day and age of Women’s Rights. Women can do and make decisions as well as anyone else can. So why is it that in one of the most important areas of life, women have been directed to be submissive? And why do “modern women” and the secular world make such a fuss over the use of the word “submit?” The issue may or may not be life or death, but the importance of maintaining a healthy and happy marriage may be at stake.

Certainly we see many examples in the Bible of women that were influential with their husbands and others, such as Sarah, Rachel, Deborah, and Esther to name a few. As indicated in Jamieson, Faussset & Brown’s, Commentary on the Whole Bible, (Zondervan, 1961) in the Book of Proverbs, we are supplied with a proverbial wisdom commended by the seal of divine inspiration. God has condescended to become our teacher on the practical affairs belonging to all the relations of life. He has adapted His instruction to the plain and unlettered, and presented, in this striking and impressive method, the great principles of duty to Him and to our fellow men. To the prime motive of all right conduct and the fear of God, are added all lawful and subordinate incentives, such as honor, interest, love, fear, and natural affection. In Proverbs 31:10-31, we find a very clear description given of the “model woman.” Let’s look at that.

Prov 31 (NKJV) {10} Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth far above rubies. {11} The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. {12} She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. {13} She seeks wool and flax, And willingly works with her hands. {14} She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar. {15} She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants. {16} She considers a field and buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard. {17} She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms. {18} She perceives that her merchandise good, And her lamp does not go out by night. {19} She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hand holds the spindle. {20} She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. {21} She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household clothed with scarlet. {22} She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing fine linen and purple. {23} Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land. {24} She makes linen garments and sells , And supplies sashes for the merchants. {25} Strength and honor her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come. {26} She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue the law of kindness. {27} She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. {28} Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband , and he praises her: {29} “Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all.” {30} Charm deceitful and beauty passing, But a woman fears the LORD, she shall be praised. {31} Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates.

This certainly doesn’t sound like a woman who sat in the corner and said or did nothing. In fact, no matter what the time, this woman would be considered highly successful. The key here seems to be her ability to not only be an ideal wife and mother, but also a successful business woman. This would be a worthy example to anyone.

Let’s look at this Scripture more closely. Who can find a “virtuous” wife? What is “virtuous?” According to Webster’s Dictionary it is “having, or characterized by, moral virtue; righteous. Chaste, said of a woman.” The Companion Bible, (Kregel, 1990) describes it as coming from the Hebrew word “hayil” which means strong in all moral qualities. The English use of this word limits it to one kind of excellence. The meaning of the Hebrew is wider. In these verses, we see a wife who is virtuous, industrious, domesticated, generous, strong, honorable, wise and godly. She displays all these qualities as she performs tasks associated with being a wife, mother, manager of her household and staff, seamstress, cook, landowner, farmer, merchant, and community leader. She not only gives attention to her own family and household staff but also provides for the poor. From her husband’s perspective, she has strong moral qualities, is priceless, trustworthy, and an asset. In any time or circumstances this person would be considered an over-achiever.

Many women today are involved in the many of the same activities. All be it, times have changed and we have many modern conveniences and technology to assist in these activities. However, there is still a substantial commitment of time and effort required.

So how could it be that the biblical “model woman” looks so much like the modern woman? Maybe it’s because a “modern” woman is a woman who reflects the times in which she lives. She is a person having ideas, beliefs and standards of her times. So while the model woman was modern for her time, in today’s world this same woman would be considered modern in ideas with some very high beliefs and moral standards. Isn’t it strange, that the model woman defined so many centuries ago is still a representative figure for today’s world. So look at the scripture again and tell me if the moral qualities described are a bad thing. As a Christian they would seem to be right on target.

Now you challenged me to a scriptural debate, I gave you the scriptures and all you could say is “WRONG!” as if you have the faintest idea what you’re talking about. Now if I’m wrong you’re supposed to cite scriptures to prove that I’m wrong (Isa 8:20, I Pet 4:11, etc.) You can’t because you don’t know anything (Prov 9:13). Who the hell is Bob Yandian? Lol, you too funny. When you say, “please cite references”, what you really mean is, “are there any books that the white man wrote that corroborate your breakdown of the scriptures…”. You can’t go to not one of those scriptures that I cited and disprove me. You’re shocked that I could actually back up what I say.

What “translation” are you talking about. I’m talking about the King James 1611, lol. Like I said, read the biblical verses I quoted and they all teach against interracial marriage. There is no other way to “interpret” it. In regards to a woman teaching in I Tim 2:11-15 it says, “I suffer not a woman to teach.”. Interpret that how you want. SO WHERE’S THE PROBLEM AND WHAT DO WE DO?

One must prepare for marriage by giving it serious forethought. Marriage should not be a spur-of-the-moment act. You need to ask yourself at least two things, (1) What can I give (contribute) and (2) Am I willing to commit myself fully to making this a successful relationship?

One of the problems today seems to lie in the fact that we have placed a negative connotation on the word “submissive.” We associate the word with relationships that are dominant, dictatorial, servile, and many other negative terms. This then coupled with a woman’s past training to be responsible and self-reliant begins to cause problems.

So a second key may then be in how we communicate and interact with each other. Do we have two people who feel that their “status or pride” is being threatened to assume the roles that they have been given? Is there a need on the part of either of both of the team to exercise some actions that firmly establish their role in this relationship? Does the husband feel a need to exercise control to demonstrate his position? Does the wife respond with acts of resistance or rebellion to assert an “equal” position in the partnership? Do we give more respect and consideration to those outside our marriage than we do to our own spouse? Are we making an effort to maintain the relationship that God described?

Any good leader or successful person knows that one of the key elements to success is communications. And communications has two aspects; one is speaking and the other is listening. Major companies today spend millions of dollars for advice of matters involving finance, law, technology and other matters. Why would a husband not want to take a marriage, that is worth much more than any major corporation, and “rule” without advice and counsel? By the same token, why would a wife not want to be a “helpmate” to achieve a successful partnership?

A successful leader also knows that you cannot operate without regard for your co-workers or followers. Leaders must delegate some of the tasks and responsibilities to achieve the objectives. When objectives are met then reward and/or praise are the order of the day. We all feel better when someone takes the time to recognize our efforts. That goes for our efforts relative to our marriages as well as those in other venues. Also with the giving of authority to perform tasks and responsibilities there is accountability. I for one worked for many years before I was married. I had a very responsible position in my field of work and had authority over several thousand employees and major financial matters. I also made all of my own decisions for many years as a single woman. But despite a successful career everyone is responsible to someone. There was always someone to whom I was accountable.

We all know that ultimately we are accountable to God. But think about your life today, inside or outside the home, and you will find more times than not that you are answerable to someone for many of the things that you do. If we are accountable to strangers, why then is it a problem to be answerable to your “partner?” This is the person that you have proclaimed to love and trust. If we have time to take counsel from others in the workplace and outside the home, why not then from our spouses?

Here then is another key issue, what is “trust.” You will note in Proverbs 31:11, that “the heart of her husband safely trusts her.” What is trust? According to Webster’s Dictionary , trust is “a firm belief or confidence in the honesty, integrity, reliability, justice, etc. of another person or thing; faith; reliance.” The Hebrew word is butach (Strong’s H982). Meaning to trust, to confide, to place hope and confidence in any one. There is much in a marriage that involves trust. Think about it. The husband in Proverbs who safely trusted “will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.” In response, “her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” To trust means that you have yielded to someone. But who better and more worthy than your husband? And husbands, a little praise now and again would not hurt.

When we married, we entered into a “contract.” That contract was an agreement between two people detailing the obligations and terms of the union. While all the specific terms of that contract are not written on a sheet of paper, it is legal and binding, both in the eyes of the civil law and God’s law. Most of us stood before our family and friends and promised that we would act in a certain manner and treat the other person in a certain manner. Among many of the things that were promised, most of us promised to “honor and cherish.” Do we understand what that means?

To “cherish” means to hold dear, feel or show love for, to take good care of, protect. Sounds like the direction in Colossians 3:19, for husbands to love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Also Ephesians 5:25-33, husbands are admonished to “love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her” and ” husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies, he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.”

Likewise, to “honor” means “high regard or great respect, given, received or enjoyed. High rank or position, distinction, dignity.” Is this not what is called for in the Scriptures that indicate that “the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the Church”(Eph 5:23), that “wives submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord” (Col 3:18), and “just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything” (Eph 5:24)?

Maybe it is time to get back to the answers we have to the two questions that we needed to consider before we entered into marriage. If we were truthful in our answers, we have committed ourselves to making this union work. We made a covenant and to that end we must be a person of our word. In this modern age, it is easy to get out of many commitments simply by saying, “I’ve changed my mind,” or “I just don’t feel that way about you any more.” Words are often cheap.

Would you like Christ to “change His mind” or “just not feel that way about you any more?”

CONCLUSION

It seems that we have come full circle. We have walked through God’s creation of the husband and wife relationship and his designation of the hierarchy of that union. We have touched upon the possible hurdle that must be cleared by the “modern woman” in clearly understanding what the submissive role of the wife entails. We have looked at the stigmatism associated with the designation of the wife’s role as submissive. We have looked at the description of the “model woman” given in Proverbs 31 and concluded that it closely is aligned to the attributes that most “modern woman” of today would subscribe to. We have looked at a couple of key elements to achieving success in any endeavor. And we have looked at two promises that were a part of the verbal marriage contract that we entered into on the day we were married that could help us in being comfortable and satisfied in the submissive wife role.

So what can we conclude? First, is that there probably isn’t any opposing positions between a submissive wife and a modern woman. That the fuss raised by the secular world is more flap than substance. Second, that the proverbial wisdom, provided through the inspiration of God, relative to the “model woman” is as applicable today as it was at the time it was written. That the joint effort of both the husband and the wife to operate a successful partnership has many subordinate incentives.

And finally, it is very easy when we enter marriage to see only a smooth road and the bright side of every thing. There is nothing wrong with that. But we need to enter marriage with a commitment that we are going to put all our efforts into making the union what God intended it to be. We must put our trust in each other and give this partnership the required effort; remembering that this relationship was modeled after Christ’s relationship with the Church.

For in the end we must be prepared to stand in front of God and be held accountable for our efforts toward conducting our marriages in the manner HE prescribed.

the man generates a very good point, a point that is shared by many men, and no they aren’t all “ignorant”. On the contrary, they’re actually men repeatedly scorned by women of their own race so through trial and error you do in some ways become an expert within your own right through your own experiences and encounters. Polow’s opinions are based around that and should be respected for that reason. Whether one fully agrees with him is something different entirely, but the logic behind a number of his statements cannot be argued with. Is Oprah a problem, in some ways as she’s done so much in an effort to uplift black women that i think she’s forgotten her brothers need help as well. As far as Polow’s take on her, he presents an interesting argument that i fully agree with as she delivers a powerful blow to the black family by not having one, and the message that delivers may seem trivial to some, but it may cause more harm than good in the long run. Black society as a whole has issues, one of those issues being the constant finger pointing which this whole issue seems to stem from, “black women do this and dats y black men are this way” which is retorted with “if black men did this , then we black women wouldn’t have to be some way”. Neither sides wants to grip the reigns of black society’s destiny TOGETHER, they both want to be totally in control and that’s what’s left us careening out of control. Polow’s not ignorant, just not properly equipped to fully speak on the issue, but he has a sense of what he’s talking about as do many of the folks who have posted here, but there is no one answer to our problems, but a collective one. One that we wont draw to until we become a COLLECTIVE again and stop focusing on being so independent and learn the value of being INTERDEPENDENT. Tearing down this one black brother for having an opinion doesn’t help matters, but only fuels just what he’s saying and fans the fire’s underneath the asses of every enraged black woman bothered by his statements. THE MARRIAGE RELATIONSHIP AS DESIGNED BY GOD

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. . . . ” Genesis 1:27 and 31 (NKJV)

“He who finds a wife finds a good thing. And obtains favor from the Lord.” Proverbs 18:22 (NKJV)

So the foundation was set for what has become one of the most lasting relationships known to man. The relationship of a man and woman, in marriage, was provided for by God almost from the beginning. We read in:

Genesis 2:18 and 24 (NKJV) And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” and then in verse {24} Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh;

God established marriage as a partnership (joined to become one flesh), but he created woman as a “helper.” So what is a partnership? Webster’s New World Dictionary, Third College Edition, (Prentice Hall, 1994) defines it as “the state of being a partner; participation. The relationship of partners; joint interest, association.” Two key words are “participation” and “joint interest.” The word “helper” is from the Hebrew “ezer” (Strong’s H5828) meaning to aid or help.

From this you can see that God never intended for a person to be cut off from a fulfilling relationship. According to the Scriptures the essence of marriage is togetherness or being “yoked” together (Mat. 19:5-6), working in unison. It allows for a spouse to complement, not compete with or suppress, the other.

This mutually dependent relationship is exemplified in the phrase “one flesh.”

Let’s move on further into this relationship when God speaks to Eve:

Gen 3:16 (NKJV) To the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire for your husband, And he shall rule over you.”

The word “rule” comes from the Hebrew word “mashal” (Strong’s H4910) which means (have, make to have) dominion, governor, rule, have power.

We can see this hierarchy reiterated in the New Testament.

1 Cor 11:3-10 (NKJV) But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman man, and the head of Christ God.

Ephesians 5: {22} Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord, {23} For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the Church; and He is the Savior of the body.

Colossians 3: {18} Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. {19} Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.

In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, which has been theorized as originally intended to be a circular letter to the Asian churches, direction is given to both husbands and wives regarding their roles in this partnership.

Eph 5:23-24 (NKJV) For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. {24} Therefore, just as the Church is subject to Christ, so the wives to their own husbands in everything.

As in any organization, whether large or small, there is a need for a leader. In this case, that role has been clearly assigned to the husband.

To “rule over you” is not a license to operate like a dictatorship. In fact, this is clearly addressed in:

Eph 5:25-33 (NKJV) Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, {26} that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, {27} that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. {28} So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. {29} For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord the church. {30} For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. {31} “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” {32} This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. {33} Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife that she respects husband.

To the wives, this statement:

1 Pet 3:1-6 (NKJV) {1} Wives, likewise, submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, {2} when they observe your chaste conduct by fear. {3} Do not let your adornment be outward; arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on apparel; {4} rather the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. {5} For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, {6} as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.

So what we have established so far is that (1) a marriage is a joining of two people as “one flesh” (partnership), (2) the husband being assigned the role as “head of the wife”(Eph 5:23), (3) the wife being directed to “submit” to her husband, and (4) both the husband and wife are directed to love one another, as Christ loves his church. Any problem so far? Sounds pretty clear.

Anyway, I tried posting this in the last discussion, but it didn’t work out. So I’ll try posting it here, because it’s still pretty relevant.

Staying out of established squabbles already present in this thread, I have to say that I really don’t think the biblical “Women should submit to their husbands” thing really applies anymore. At the risk of sounding anti-Christian, we just have to look at the differences between the times in which those phrases and edicts were coined, and now.

Think about it: back in the day (and I suppose I should say waaaay back in the day), when it was commonly believed, practiced, and taught that woman should submit to their husbands, it was also the social norm and expectation that women–married women, specifically–didn’t work. As a married woman, your job was to mind the home, and take care of the children. It was the job of the husband to go out into the world and provide, financially, for his family.

The ‘submitting to your husbands’ thing was never meant to be considered proverbial enslavement for the woman/wife. On the contrary, while the husband was away it was the wife who controlled the home, the meals, the source of the man’s comfort and refuge from the world. And a good wife would make sure that the home was kept in proper order for her husband. Naturally, this afforded the wife a level of power. However, that level of power did not override that of the husband’s. Ideas could be discussed and argued, a good husband would listen to and consider the desires and concerns of his wife, but ultimately the final say belonged to the husband, because while the wife controlled the home, the husband *owned* the home. He was in control of the money, and thus his house and everything in it. And, in most cases, he was even legally responsible for his house. In reality, it was a symbiotic relationship that worked as long as you had two willing people: A man who wanted a family, and a woman who wanted a man to provide for her and a family to take care of.

However, fast forward today, and things aren’t so much the same. Social norms and expectations of the woman have changed. While in those times it was the norm that women didn’t “work”, nowadays it is the social norm and expectation that women do work, married or not. Most women are no longer satisfied with the prospect of the being the housewives for husbands. Most women want, and go out and get, an education, a trade, a career–whether because they need to or they just want to. Most women today, and not just black women but admittedly a lot of black women, are thinking of themselves, and for themselves. And not of a man who’ll do all the providing for them.

This change has been something a lot easier for women to grasp than men, as evidenced her by Palow Da Don. In an environment like this, a man cannot be the proverbial “kind of the castle”. To do so would be to strike unbalance in his family unit. Before, when the woman did not work, her job was the home, and the man controlled the income, and thus the home, and in that fact his claim to the role as “king” and final decision maker was already established. However, in the situation more commonly faced nowadays where the man is NOT the sole breadwinner, but shares that responsibility with his wife and thus all the successes and woes of being a person of income, his role as “king”, his claim to being the ultimate decider is NOT established. His title is not earned, and thus is must be shared with his wife. And, to keep the balance in the family units, all other duties to the home must be shared, likewise, or else undue burden would be placed on the wife. Too many men these days get with working women, and expect to be able to come home from the 9-5 and kick off their shoes and relax, while his woman comes home from HER 9-5 and cleans the house, takes care of the kids, and gets dinner on the table. In a home with two breadwinners, those chores must be shared. As well as the decision-making. The man can no longer say “this is how it’s going to be” if he does not have the leverage to back up his claim.

And this is how a lot of men these days make THEMSELVES feel emasculated, because there are trapped in an old mindset. They feel that, simply because they are men, they are entitled to being undisputed King of their households–without realizing what about their masculinity afforded them that right in the first place. So a lot of these men get with working women–intelligent, career-driven women who are about their business–and try to enforce an old-fashioned mindset on a scenario that is, in itself, not that old-fashioned. A lot of these men come into their relationships with these working women automatically expecting to take a dominant role instead of an *equal partnership* and try to say “this is how it’s going to be”. And, when the women whom, knowing she works just as hard as her man, responds with “I think not! You’re not the only one working 9 to 5 up in this bitch” and demands that their relationship be EQUAL, a lot of men can’t handle that, because of that old-mindset they have not had to shake since it was instilled in them as children. So they claim that the woman, who is only asserting her rightful place as equal breadwinner, is questioning him or trying to emasculate him when, in reality, he emasculated himself.

So, in this sense, the “Women, submit to your husbands” frame of mind does not work. And this is something men like, Palow Da Don does not understand. Men have never had to right to be “king of the castle” from the simple fact that they are men. It has always been a right that a man has had to EARN by being the provider. If a man wants a woman that will submit to him, the choice is a simple one: Get a woman who doesn’t work, who’ll need to depend on you financially. Then you’ll get to be king of the castle and have your dominance established. But don’t, as Palow Da Don tried to claim men have the “right” to do, come into a woman’s house and try to establish dominance over that woman’s house when you have NOT earned it. And do not get with working woman, and expect them to submit to you as king and decision maker. A lot of them won’t, and they don’t have to. And it has nothing to do with “questioning” you.
