SONGS ABOUT DRINKS…

It’s funny. We’ve become really enthralled by drinks this summer. Even though I can’t relate (because I don’t drink), I definitely can see that the consumption of alcohol in the club unifies the masses. Drinks bring people together. And though we’ve dealt with this epidemic of alcoholic beverages in music before, the summer of 2007 definitely allowed for a large comeback for liquor in songs. I bet these liquor companies are grinning and licking their chops at all the money they’ve been able to bring in just off the strength of this new pseudo-marketing that hip-hop songs have been providing. I will admit, though, this time it’s a little different. Artists have gotten less specific about what kind of drinks they want. They just want drinks.

Cassidy feat. Swizz Beats – My Drink & My Two-Step

The first time I heard this song was in the club, and it just went hard. Swizzy’s on top, and it’s just a fun song. Seems like everyone’s drinking and two-stepping, so why not make a song about it? Aside from Swizz killing the game right now, producing for everyone, and a new album with material everyone seems to be digging, this is really a good look for Cassidy, for his first album since getting out of jail. This song is just a lot of fun and gets the club rocking.

T-Pain feat. Yung Joc – Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin’)

Easily one of the biggest songs of the summer, T-Pain definitely showed us that he’s serious about singing and getting the girls liquored up. However, I think it was a failed attempt at trying to set the standard for the summer: a dude buys a girl a drink, and then she’s going home with him. Is that really how it works? It can’t be that easy. I don’t think the smart ladies fell for that this summer. It’s cute to dance to, but the message, I think, was a little lost in translation.

Keri Hilson feat. Snoop Dogg – Happy Juice

Keri Hilson made an ode to her favorite drink back in her college days, “Happy Juice.” It’s a drink that she and some friends made up by mixing Hennessey and apple juice. The song is a hot, danceable track. I’ve heard it a couple of times in some hole-in-the-wall Atlanta spots, and it really goes off. It gets people really loose. I’ve actually had the pleasure of seeing Keri perform this live, and I can really get into it, ’cause she an original A-Town representer. Look for “Happy Juice” featuring Snoop and Ludacris sometime this fall.

T-Pain & Akon – Bartender

As you guys know, I try to stay as far away from Akon (and T-Pain, but he’s starting to grow on me!) as possible, but this song really snuck up on me when I was in the club, just chilling after some hardcore dancing. I don’t drink, I can’t relate, but I love the slow groove in the club and you can just rock to it. It’s like your cool-down session. Again, not too specific about what kind of drink. I think it’s safe to say that T-Pain sort of ruled the club this summer. From being on millions of remixes, to releasing club anthems galore.

I have been on that Keri Hilson song since November at the least!!! Why is it just now getting played? And why isn’t it coming out until fall? That just dont seem right. Hearing that song made me HAVE to try the drink and I am not a fan of dark liquor. BUT, it is actually good! It taste like apple cider, with a little kick, but not what you would expect from Hennessy. It doesnt burn going down! And when you warm it up it’s even better. Try it! It’s definitely a fall or winter kind of drink, though.

HAPPY JUICE is the best song. HOWEVER, I reccommend that everyone downloads the ORIGINAL version. That featured Snoop’s verse in the beginning and instead of Luda, Stat-Quo had a verse that was pretty good. That’s the better one. Buy U A Drank and Bartender were good before they hit the radio and were ruined because of constant overplay (you pop/R&B stations). Cassidy is pretty good, I like it. Not a big deal, but a good song.
