WHO SANG IT BETTER: RIHANNA VS. MANDY?
Friday, August 17, 2007

Under their umbrellas? So I thought that this was pretty funny that Mandy Moore decided to cover Rihanna’s huge crossover smash, “Umbrella.” I first heard this song on MTV’s popular “reality” series, The Hills. I’m not really a fan of the show, but I just happened to be at a friend’s house and there she was singing “Umbrella.” [Apparently, the version that was on 'The Hill's' wasn't Mandy Moore, it was Marie Digby. View her version here.] In all honesty, this just proves the crossover appeal of this song. I’ve heard country version of this song, and here’s a soft-rock ballad version and it actually is listenable. I can’t even hate, this version has something likable about it. Of course, they serve two different purposes. Rihanna’s “Umbrella” (written and produced by The Dream) goes hard in the club and in the car, and Mandy’s version is for those kick back nights with your boo.
Rihanna - Umbrella (full) - listen / alternate
Mandy Moore - Umbrella (full) - listen / alternate
[However, I will say this. This just goes to show you that white folks will forever take something that black people have done before, throw some blonde hair on it and their people will go up for it. We can never have some stuff to ourselves.] Some people may have forgot that this is a blog, which means we are entitled to our opinions. Even if you don’t agree with what Brian said, you can at least speak on it maturely. Thanx for your time. -Angel

I don’t understand why it has to be a black white thing either…….good music is good music. Alot of black artist sample off of old school white song beats….especially Diddy….so i don’t see the problem.

#9, I wasn’t making it a black/white issue. I just think that people should recognize that for a long time, white people have taken what black people have done and made it their own. rock ‘n roll is a prime example of that.
that’s why people were so enamored with people like elvis - he was a white man that sounded and moved like a black man, so it was acceptable for them to like that.

EXACTLY so stop making everything into a Black White thing.
There are Plenty of Black artists that sample off of White ones.
Did You know ” I will always love you” was originall y sung by Dolly Parton and she wrote it too.
Anyway Mandy Moore and Jessica simpeson FLOPS ALL THE TIME. so I don’t know whast White people are eating up , but it is not them.

#35 ACTUALLY CHUCK BERRY WAS KNOW YOUR BLACK HISTORY. HE WAS THE FATHER OF ROCK N ROLL.
MARLON BRANDO SAID IT BEST.
“It seems to me hilarious that our government put the face of Elvis Presley on a postage stamp after he died from an overdose of drugs. His fans don’t mention that because they don’t want to give up their myths. They ignore the fact that he was a drug addict and claim he invented rock ‘n’ roll when in fact he took it from black culture; they had been singing that way for years before he came along, copied them and became a star.”

Charles Edward Anderson “Chuck” Berry (born October 18, 1926 in Overland, Missouri) is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter.
Chuck Berry is an immensely influential figure and one of the pioneers of rock & roll music. Cub Koda wrote, “Of all the early breakthrough rock & roll artists, none is more important to the development of the music than Chuck Berry. He is its greatest songwriter, the main shaper of its instrumental voice, one of its greatest guitarists, and one of its greatest performers.”[1] John Lennon was more succinct: “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry’.”[2]
Berry was among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its opening in 1986. He received Kennedy Center Honors in 2000 in a “class” with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Plácido Domingo, Angela Lansbury, and Clint Eastwood. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Chuck Berry[3]#5 on their list of The Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[4] He was also ranked 6th on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

yeah we know that back in the days whites would take the black people’s music but when they did it they tried to take it has their own..like Whitney in “i will always love you” she credited Dolly numerous times for being the original singer as many Moore did in the pepsi Smash “Umbrella” rendition

I check this site almost daily, due to liking hip-hop rnb etc. im from the uk and white.
When looking though this site now and then i see the white/black thing mentioned why?
I know its seems more so for the black community but if any news articles features anyone that is white, its as if your ashamed to have them on your site and even apologize to people for doing so.
Why do people feel the need to compare people due to skin color? they are individuals, like them for talent.

Ehh. I don’t think the race card applies here either. Its not like Umbrella is a typical r&b song that got reworked, repackaged and fed to white people. If everybody thought this was Mandy Moore’s song, I would agree, but it seems that white people across the world are feeling Rihanna’s version enough.

I think I understand what Brian was hinting at, but in this case I don’t believe that his argument is relevant. The idea of whites stealing “black” music was onlly relevant when they were trying to pass it off as their own and when they were denying the talent of blacks. In this case, Mandy moore doesn’t appear to be doing that and Rihanna’s song was in the top ten for a while. I think it’s important to look at situations with a eye on race but in this case Brian it doesn’t fit.
RACE CARD - I hate this term because it undermines the way that race functions in our society and reduces it to a mere “trick”, the product of the Black imagination. We should really stop using it because it allows white people and ignorant blacks to minimize the way that racism functions in our society. Let’s read more people…

I heard this on the Hills the other night to. I thought it was just for the Hills soundtrack because thats the kind of vibe the Hills normally has. I didnt think she was like making a single or something. I could be wrong but some of you are acting like shes trying to make her way to the top of the charts with this song like its a new remixed single or something.

A Black artist may have recorded the song but you must remember Rhianna is not an R&B artist. If she was of another race, nobody would put her in that category. The majority of Rhianna’s songs are Pop. Umbrella was her first top 20 hit on the R&B charts. Her songs are hits on Pop radio.
Umbrella is one of those songs that is a combination of a bunch of genres so it’s not surprising that. Also, Umbrella was written for WHITE Britney Spears, not Rhianna.

“I thought the whole proud to be black thing was done and thing of the past, stop going around with a chip on your shoulder.”
Sweetheart, these two statements are not synonyms. Just because you are proud of your heritage doesn’t necessarily mean you have a chip on your shoulder. Personally, I could give a damn who is copying off of who, but the “proud to be black thing” will never be a thing of the past.
Thanks.

Mandy stole nothing from Rhianna!!!!!! she just got lucky and got a hit song from talented song writers!!
“Umbrella” was not initially meant as a love note from Rihanna to her man-friends. “Umbrella” scribe Terius Nash, aka the Dream, wrote it as a wartime lullaby, for his people who are stationed in Iraq. “Emotionally, I was tapped into what the world was goin through - the war. We losin a lot of those people over there. Most of those troops are from Georgia,” says the singer / songwriter, who resides in Atlanta.
“Rihanna wasn’t the first recipient in line for the song. “I wrote it for Britney Spears,” says Dream, who had penned “Me Behind the Music” for Spears and Madonna two years prior. “She was going through a lot at that particular point, especially with her kids. I wrote it from the perspective of how a mother would sing to her children whenever they’re going through something. And it actually transcended into meaning a lot for everybody.”

I don’t know why it has to be a black white thing, the Rhianna one is the one that people love and Mandy’s version would be nothing without it’s success but it’s a nice cross over. Artists do it all the time, ride on someone else’s wave. Beyonce did it to 50, it’s just a cover and I actually quite like it, Rhianna’s one is a classic but the best form of flattery is to imitate or cover, no need to make it a black or white thing.

Um Mandy Moore’s hair isn’t Blonde so your stereo-type/racist p.o.v is ridiculous…
Also just like most of the people in this field she probably had little to do with picking this song at all.
There are many cultures of white people some mentalities of some white people suck and some black people are just as close minded and prejudice as them.
Rhianna sang a song somebody else wrote and put her face on it. So did Mandy Moore hence it is only fair to call both of them hacks.
The producer sold that song to white people so thats really his bad.
He could have hung onto it and did a self release if he wanted to keep his work.
There are many white people that you don’t see and do you know why?
Because the media/gov’t/the “MAN” controls everything we see.
So basically you see more or less things that most white people don’t agree with/ like either.
That is why black people with grillz have taken precedence over people with skills who are artistic….Think about it. You have all been duped so unless you are listening to independent artists you have basically bought into to the societal decline.
Those people all pay for their awards as well as their airtime. Talent and intelligence take a back seat. So before you go talkin that smack about white people following and black people this and that realize they signed the paper so really what we have is a multicultural issue.
Slavery has not been isolated to black people just as more than jewish people were murdered in the Holocaust. (I believe that the number was 12 million died 6 million of which were jewish)
Every culture has issues and unfortunately in our country there is a small percentage of people that get to speak….Remember when you look at the tv and think why are they making black people look like this there is a white person thinking the same thing.
Both versions of the song umbrella are poor and the vocals are really more annoying on the Rhianna version.

Oh and by the way get off Elvis he did alot of good shit for black people and also never said he wasn’t inspired by black music…. SO before you go calling Elvis a thief recognize stealing is when people take something and the person that it was taken from don’t know about it….

Brian’s point is right. But artists cover music all the time, and being ORIGINAL is not a prereq for getting a record deal. And I seriously doubt Mandy’s version will get as much play, if any. Plus, it’s not like Ri Ri wrote the song. The only reason people are getting into a tizzy about this is because the post description put race to the forefront of the issue. Other posts comparing one track by two artists haven’t received such attention. I guess the popularity of the song and the coverage of anniversary of Elvis’ death got Black people heated.
Both versions can kick rocks.

Whether you guys like it or not it usually always is a Black and white thing-that is the world we live in.THEY make everyhting a Black /white thing. Just when you think they are looking at you like a human being, they go and offer you some chicken or something. AND stealing from blacks to make more money is not a thing of the past people ! It is ongoing-nothing is without politics i.e. racial, sexual, etc. It wasn’t just Elvis, it continues until this day, look at Eminem and Justin, and they even admit that they steal and mimic Blacks because they know they will profit from “blackfacing’. I guess it makes some people feel good to think that race is a non issue in most things—READ about the Jena 6 and then wake the heck up!

@142
Thank You!
Brian is such a reject for bringing up the whole “white people are stealing our music” nonsense. Nobody in the industry is doin that shit no more, I know Brian loves his copy of Dreamgirls but sorry boo boo, white people are doing their own thang with that pop music.
It’s just a dayum COVER SONG! Artists do that all the time, it’s never released as actual singles. For example: Nelly Furtado did an acoustic cover of Gnarl’s Barkley’s “Crazy” last year. Another example is: JoJo doing a cover of Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls.” They aren’t going to profit off the song with these covers because if they tried that their asses will get sued for millions, Beyonce learned that the hard way when she stole Des’ree’s song.
And one last thing…The song is straight trash anyway. Nobody bought the song for the lyrics or Rihanna’s terrible voice, they bought it for C. Tricky Stewart’s beat. Rihanna had absolutely no input on this album which would make her an “industry puppet” and she sure as hell had no input on this song. Jay-Z just handed it to her and told her “to sing the lyrics.”

more than half these comments about white singers immediately duplicating something that a black musician recently did are wrong. and you need a music history lesson.
and i feel black musician and people have a right to be upset because of what has happen in the past with our greats…..
and it’s obvious shit has not changed…..and you young folks need to recognize and be conscious of whats really going down and think about the out come of it all and not except everything.
yes whitney did a remake of that country hit…..but think> how many years between the remake….she just remade a classic thats all.

Sorry Brian you’re an idiot! Of course white people steal from blacks and try to make certain things their own when its really not but in this particular case, you got it all wrong! Its a damn cover song for goodness sake! People do it all the time - sing their own version of hit songs. No big deal. And lets stop acting like Umbrella was meant for a black person anyway. On top of that, it’s not even a hip-hop song - it’s a pop song! Just cuz a rapper is on the track don’t neccesarily mean it’s a hip-hop song. Even so of course white people are gonna like the song and sing their own version of it. Bringing up race is just so stupid. And I will repeat its a fuckin cover song!!!! You think Rihanna was like “I hope white people don’t like this song because its meant for black people and if a white person sings it then I will be pissed.” Its a pop song so if white singers wanna cover it who the fuck cares. Whites stealing from blacks is not an issue on this particular case. Duh!!

I mean damn, the mandy moore version and the one heard on The Hills sound 50 times different. Not all white people sound the same. And Marie’s version sound better cuz she can actually sing!

You people are so freaking racist. Calling white people racist all the time for any little thing they say, but sure, YOU can say anything you want, and its ok, right? Grow up. Its that kind of attitude that perpetuates racism. You’re giving us a reason to hate all of you–because you refuse to let go of your own anger and hate at people who did things that have nothign to do with us each as an individual. I wasnt racist, till I started reading stupid websites like CL and Mediatakeout.

Get the fucking chip off your shoulder. Grow up. Stop blaming white people for everything thats wrong in your life and for everything that sucks. Ewww. This is awful. I never thought Mandy could sing, she was always just…… the other blonde!
I like the soft-rock version better than this…but I don’t know who sings it.
Even though I hate to say it, Rihanna sings it best!
Oh BTW The Hills is scripted, and that girl Heidi has a song on the radio w/ her boyfirend rapping on it!!!

When it comes to music, I’m color blind..Shawty can be green, and if the song is bumpin, I’m gonna play it in my truck.. Also, I think you are going to see more and more rappers do a “rock” album (i.e. Jay-z/Linkin Park Collabo).. I truly hope the Roots take that step.
First off, I don’t like the Umbrella song, and I do believe Rihanna is vocally challenged. Secondly, I do believe Mandy is a better singer but as far as the production, I would definitely give it up to Ri Ri’s Song.
Now, I just listened to Marie’s Youtube/The Hills version and personally I think it’s better than Ri’s and Mandy’s rendition.

Yea, since some people seem confused, this is all part of a thing they do on Yahoo called “Cover Art” where artists cover some of their favorite songs out right now. Mandy’s not jacking it, she just did her only little rendition. Dang some of y’all are mad as if the girl was releasing it on her album or something! Yikes. Anyway, I kind of find Mandy Moore’s voice soothing. It gives a different vibe to the song, which is cool. Makes me wonder why on earth Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears always got more attention (Christina, I understand, but not those two!)

It’s not really about Black and White here.
Rihanna can’t sing as well as Mandy.
Umbrella and SOS were her best songs. Unfaithful is like her 3rd “best” song. But it suffered from the fact that the song is one big meandering mess that lacks a sufficient bridge and it doesn’t build up to a big ballad worthy note. It just stayed there, flat. U want and expect more and Rihanna’s voice is just incapable of delivering that.
BTW, everyone covers hot songs as an homage to the original. Mandy isn’t trying to take her shine and release this song as a single. She is currently working the 2nd single off her surprise folk rock hit “Wild Hope” and is doing mad promo for the song at all of the easy listening and lite fm type stations.
This song was a one off. Nothing more. It was all for fun in the studio.
200.
wow
Friday, August 17, 2007 /
Its really not that serious. She cant just take a song and sing it all willy nilly because she feels like it. She didnt wake up and decide she wanted to sing her own rendition of umbrella. There is all kinds of legal things and paperwork and permission they had to get for her to sing this song which I am pretty sure is strictly for the Hills soundtrack and not for the purpose of a single. Like seriously this got blown way out of proportion.
Times have changed and people NOW cant just steal music without risking legak suit against them…AND NO ONE WANTS THAT

Brian in the case of rock n roll you are right but it is completely our fault as to WHY we have not embraced rock as a culture anymore. We have cultural hangups.
Bloc Party, Lenny Kravitz, Jimi Hendrix, Sevendust, several punk groups featured in the documentary “Afro-Punk,” Hootie And The Blowfish….these were all groups/singers that chose to do rock and did a damned good version of it yet black Americans never catch on. Why? That sounds like a cultural problem.
Rock never stopped being ours, we just let it slip away. But I am here to tell you as a black rock chic, it’s still alive and well. You just have to look for it.

Rihanna wasn’t the first recipient in line for the song.

Really it doesn’t matter, it doesnt have to be a black or white thing. The song wasn’t originally rihanna’s anyway, i’ve heard MANY different versions of this song & originally it was song by a white person. So what if the white people said oh those blacks always gotta throw sum “flava” or whatever into there songs. The Luther Van Dros song Dont you remember you told me you loved me, was song originally by who?, a white person. It goes both ways in this situation, Rihanna DID NOT come up with the song, nor did she write it, so she has just become “big” this summer over a song that’s not even her’s

LOL, this is so crazy cause when I seen this post and heard Mandy Moore’s Version, I instantly thought of that scene in Dreamgirls… “Baught me a cadilac, cadilac, cadilac… baught me a cadilac car…” Now I have to say, I’m part white and I defenitly do not like mandy moore’s version. How the hell do you even TRY to change an uptempo song like Umbrella and SLOW it down to half speed, throw a guitar in the background and call it yours. I hope this was a joke…. Mandy Moore needs to go back to her “CANDY” days, she did sound ok on that song atleast. Rhianna sounds like an individual on Umbrella, but Mandy, sounds exactly like what she’s doin, being an copy cat. Man, I can’t stop thinkin about that part in dream girls… now I see it still goes on today. Some things will NEVER change…

Andrew

u know what? most of y’all want to be tolerated, but u’re intolerant against everything, which does not fit into your opinion….
we’re living in the year 2007 and the only thing you can think about is black and white…

@ 268 I think LC is right bc in the preview when Jason & LC was having dinner did you hear Heidi say “prob they’re into some making movie action 2night”..even in the show it seemed like Spencer controls the relationship bc he told Heidi to step to LC

What irks me so much about this entire thread is the fact that Brian did make this a white and black issue when it didn’t need to be. Yes white people do steal from black people and try to act like its their own but in this particular case, why bring that up just because a white girl chose to sing a rendition of Umbrella? He’s acting like white people shouldn’t be singing Umbrella just cuz a black girl sung it first.
First off its a pop song so it will appeal to anyone. Second the song was meant for a white person regardless. If a white person wants to cover the song, then who cares? Music is universal, white people could sing it if they want. White people are singing the song all the time, so is that such a bad thing? And if a white person wants to post it on youtube singing the song, is that wrong too? Def Jam wants white people singing Umbrella. Heck they want white people, black people, spanish, asian and all sorts of people singing the song. Thats what makes a song a hit - if everyone likes it. Its like Brian is saying that white people shouldn’t be singing Umbrella or sing a cover of it just because a black person sung it first. And thats what pisses me off, because its racist. Its a pop song - anyone can sing it and sing their rendition of it if they want.
It doesn’t mean that Mandy Moore is stealing it from Rihanna. Heck I don’t even like Mandy Moore’s version of it but if she wants to cover it then why not? Especially since it was for a Yahoo thing that asks artists to sing a cover of songs that they like or is somewhat popular.

Wow Marie Digby version is so good. I still prefer Rihanna and haven’t change my mind about Mandy (too bad).

It took me a while to like the song when I first heard Rhianna sing it, especially the umbrella ella ella eh eh eh bit. Listened to Mandy’s version and felt it lacked something but then listened to Marie Digby’s version and I quite liked that too. But prefer Rhianna’s to be honest. In this instance I felt Brian’s comments were not applicable.

with all that was said couldn’t manDy come up with some other shit though?
what’s the point of a cover song?
is she still making music?
is this supposedly her come back song?
when i hear this song i can’t help but think about the many Old White America that must love this song.
I also hated how madonna “covered” Marvin Gaye (I want you).
some songs should just be left alone plain and simple.

I happen to think Mandy Moores version sounds nice, certainly alot nicer than i anticipated.
. I certainly dont think she was singing with the hope that it will do better than Rhiana’s version. Just a cover of a song she likes and there is room for both just a matter of people’s preference
