BEYONCE: “I’M JUST JEALOUS THAT I WASN’T BORN LATINA”

Beyonce stirs debate yet again //
Believe it or not, Beyonce has stirred up more debate across the internet again. The singer who was recently interviewed by Latina Magazine, spoke on her cross-over appeal, as well as her success with singing in Spanish.
When she was asked a question about her Latina fans, Beyonce responded with a comment that is sure to cause some drama around her camp. Read on:
Latina: What’s one thing that you’d like to tell your Latina fans?
Beyonce: I would thank them for embracing me. I did radio (promotions) this morning for hours and hours and I noticed a big difference between speaking to all of the Latino stations and speaking to the pop stations or the other stations. With the Latino stations, there was so much love and everyone is so genuine. I’m just jealous that I wasn’t born Latina. I wish I had been because the culture is so beautiful. I’m very grateful Latinos are embracing me. [ CLICK HERE TO READ FULL INTERVIEW ]
I hate to be blunt, but you can’t be that popular and consistently be unable to give a proper interview. She really needs to take some classes in public speaking, ASAP! Also, I would have to agree with Brown Sista and say Beyonce was probably doing some “butt-kissing” and it just came out wrong. Now, let’s see how this new “b-drama” is going to unfold.
What’s your take on her comment?

Angel,
I agree that Beyonce was probably doing some MAJOR “butt-kissing” when she made that statement and it just came out the wrong way. And who knows maybe she said it a different way and the magazine printed it like they wanted. Magazines have been known to “twist” celebrities words.
But I also agree with you that you can’t be this popular and not be able to give a proper interview. I like Beyonce and I think she’s a great entertainer, but she really needs to work on her communication skills. I”ve always given her the benefit of the doubt, but she needs to do better.

After taking time reading this interview it proves that she’s such an air-head. Even if she didn’t mean it why sell-out to please other races? or was she showing her true colors?

Yup she was saying what she thought needed to be said to appeal to that audience. It wasn’t the right thing to say, however she meant it as a complimen. Admittedly others could see it as her not being proud of her own culture. But I guess. I don’t see it as a big deal. She’s trying to sell records.

We all know that Beyonce is not well spoken, this is just another example. I think she was trying to pay Hispanics a compliment and had no idea that the way this came out could offend her own culture. She needs a media spokesperson and she needs to not answer any questions until she runs it by them for a check first. With all of her resources and as long as she has been doing this, you would think she would have gotten a lot better at public speaking.

I agree 100% with M-Saw. Then people wonder why her momma is always there with her at interviews. It’s because they know they got a dumb ass daughter who is likely to say the wrong things.
I am somewhat of a fan of Beyonce. I like her old music, but I do think she is over-rated and over-worshipped. I can see this statement coming out wrong and people taking it to mean she is not proud to be black. Although I don’t think she meant it that way, it’s like come on now, you are 26 years old now…You shouldn’t be that much of a ding bat…But then again, you can’t learn common sense in school.

I love her to death but “What the hell”? I’m confused because I remember seeing an interview where she stated that she was a proud black woman….B must’ve been tired because it isn’t the Latinas that have made her ass rich, it’s the black is she going to wish she were white next? Like I said I’m a huge fan but she kinda pissed me off with that comment.

I don’t know about that one….Surely she just should have left it at saying she appreciates the Latin culture - maybe made some parallels between her own and the the Latino community. She bumbled it, no biggie..

MAYBE BEYONCE JUST HAS COMPLEX ISSUES REGARDING BEINGA BLACK WOMAN. ALTHOUGH THIS DOESN’T MAKE IT RIGHT- TRUTHFULLY, MANY WOMEN DO. FOR EXAMPLE, BEYONCE SAID, IN REPLY TO THEIR NEW VIDEO, “BEAUTIFUL LIAR”, WITH HER AND SHAKIRA- THAT SHE COULD NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HER AND SHAKIRA ON MORE THAN ONE OCCAISION….
RIGHT.
SHAKIRA IS A 4′11 BEAUTIFUL WOMAN WITH BLONDE CURLY HAIR AND YOU ARE 5′6, PRETTY NONETHELESS, A BIT MORE GOLDEN TONED WITH HONEY BLONDE EXTENSIONS SUITABLE FOR A BALCK WOMAN.. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE…
BUT YES- AS SAID BEFORE, MANY OF US BLACK WOMEN HAVE A COMPLEX. I KNOW I HAVE MY INSECURITES, THAT’S WHY I LET MY HAIR GROW LONG PAST MY BRA STRAP AND I FEAR CUTTING IT BECAUSE “LONG HAIR ON A BLACK WOMAN COMES OFF AS APPEALING” (IN THE WORDS OF MY EX). THAT’S WHY, DOMINICAN WOMEN WILL CONTINUE TO BLOW OUT YOUR HAIR AND THEIRS, BONE STRIAGHT TO ACHIEVE A MORE ATTRACTIVE, “EUROPEAN LOOK”. MAYBE THAT’S WHY CELEBS, SUCH AS TYRA, JLO, AND KIMORA, HAVE SHAVED INCHES DOWN OFF THEIR NOSE IN ORDER TO HIGHLIGHT THE BRIDGE IN THE MIDDLE FOR A MORE, POINTY, “WHITE” PROFILE SHOT.
THEN AGAIN- MAYBE SHORTY JUST REALLY FELT LIKE SUCH A COMMENT WAS A GOOD PLOY FOR MARKETING. WHO KNOWS.

Someone always staying out of conflict shouldn’t have said that but she should start being more blunt. Let keep it real…pop, rock, and hip hop stations and magazines speak about fashion, love lives, and scandal. They all give the same interview, with the exception of Sister2Sister. I love magz but it’s the truth. She probably doesn’t get pressure to speak about Jay-Z or falling or nonsense on Latino stations. I’m not the biggest fan or against her. I couldn’t do what she does. I’d like the money but I could stand the attention and 18-24 hours of work. I’d hate every mainstream US station and magz asking the same questions or trying to trick or pressure me into answering something I didn’t want to. She wants this lifestyle and knows what comes along with it and deals with it and I think she is speaking the truth. But fans of any race will build you up to tear you down. Non-Latin Americans shouldn’t be stereotyped.

She should be wishing she’d think and then speak. Pandering is one thing but she went overboard. For all of her talent, she is perhaps the most consistently ignorant performer in recent memory. If she’d been born Latina, she wouldn’t be nearly as successful as she is now. Imbicile.

At any age……we are human…nobody’s perfect…

Oh, and lets be honest… most African Americans claim to be “Indian” (Native Amer.) and many black Latinos with skin and hair like mine don’t accept being called black. We are Afro. Amer, Afro-Latino, Haitian, Caribbean, African, and many other races and ethnicities. Our moder hip-hop culture has accepted and embraced Latinos whether they are of African decent or not. This is a beautiful thing. Let’s not get on her for wanting a little Latin blood and wanting to grow up knowing the lingo and culture when our last two female hosts on a BET show were Latino of non African Decent. Our magazines report info on popular Latin stars. 4 or 5 of the women on BET’s top 25 most beautiful Black women were Latinos that weren’t black. Hey, I wouldn’t mind having Daniel Sunjata, Frankie G, Adam Rodriguez (CSI), Jorge Santiogo (UFC), or Ricardo Chavira on some of our countdown and magazines. There are beautiful people (like in any ethnicity), a beautiful language, delicious food, and a beautiful culture. The women are really accepted in hip-hop and pop and she is one of the only African Americans accepted into their culture. I can see what Beyonce would like to have experienced more of.

i dont know. her statement seems like a slight attack against the black & pop radio stations…maybe she’s saying she feels more love from the Latin community because everyone else seems to stay hating. I also have to agree with Brian, because she has been doing a lot of promotion for her “Irrempezable” CD, and thats been all over MTV Tres.
All that being said, I still think that she slipped up by saying this. And I mean slipped up BIG TIME. A LOT of people (black people especially) are going to have a field day with this, simply because she made a statement that was not put together very well. She was probably excited and couldn’t get her thoughts together properly. I’ve seen her do that quite frequently in interviews. Maybe a little more media training would help with that…Personally, I’m gonna chalk it up to her being a below average speaker. If she meant what she said THE WAY SHE SAID IT, then, wow that’s a shame. But I’m pretty sure she would never say anything to intentionally spark a firestorm with her fans, her friends and her family.
Also….ROTFL @#40!!! ha ha.

Come on, ya’ll…I was being sarcastic before, but really??? Are you shocked that she misspoke? She’s an idiot…She also said people didn’t flock to her character in Dream Girls because she wasn’t a stereotype… People don’t take her seriously, or else that would have made the press as either her calling Jennifer Hudson’s character/performance a perpetuation of a stereotype OR saying that black people aren’t accustomed to “classy, understated” (her words) representations of themselves…. Cause she was definitely doing both those things, but nobody cared because nobody takes her serious… She’s an idiot with a list of adjectives (I’m not being funny, I really think she has a list of adjectives. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed adjectives are the whole of her vocabulary?????)

Speak on it Angel!
Its one thing to try and sell records, but when you become a sell out theres something wrong. Theres nothing wrong with her trying to appeal to the Spanish market, but that was a pretty ignorant comment to make even if she meant it as a compliment. Was it really that hard just to say I love the culture?
It was pretty messed up also what she said about the other radio stations. There cool when they play her records right? They are the ones that got her music out there and she wouldnt be on the level she is now with out them.
I really lost a lot of respect for her. She just slapped a lot of black people in the face that supported her.

Wow! Come on now folks, let’s cut her a little slack, we all know she’s not the most articulate of the bunch. I’m sure she wasn’t saying she doesn’t appreciate being black, I think she was just trying to compliment LATINAS and it came out the wrong. Like everyone said… just a little @ss kissing to sell a few more albums. Real talk though i’ve seen people on here say that “she has so many haters she must be doing something RIGHT”, it might be something Beyonce is doing WRONG. I have never seen an entertainer that has just as many people that LOVE them…HATE them. JANET, MARY J., ALICIA KEYS, MARIAH…. all these ladies have more people that LOVE them then HATE them. And all those women have been able to master being everywhere (as far as publicity) and not get on people’s nerves. So why can’t BEYONCE do it? For some reason, BEYONCE seems to be split right down the middle… either people love her or can’t stand her @ss. It’s weird. Me, i’m on the fence.
While i’m sure she didn’t mean anything by this statement, I can’t help but to laugh at people making excuses for it. When HALLE BERRY said that when she was younger she wished to be ” cured of her blackness” (because she didn’t know any better) folks jumped on her for it. When she was born half-white and was raised in an all white part of town, which i’m sure she got teased a lot. So her feeling that way at a young age isn’t that far fetched. What is Beyonce’s excuse? Nothing. I have never seen J. Lo when she’s on the cover of VIBE magazine saying she wished she was born BLACK, just to sell a few records. The LATINO’S would have torn her @ss up. LOL! Every time you turn around BEYONCE talking about CREOLE this and CREOLE that. My fathers entire family is CREOLE, i’m light skinned, yet i’m not preaching about CREOLE at all times, I understand being proud…but d@mn, i’m BLACK!! Wouldn’t change it for the world…. that’s why I can’t stand when people say “we should support these people, because they represent US’, no she doesn’t, BEYONCE represents BEYONCE. If your going to say that, at least say that about someone that is not just cute, but worldly and well spoken. If someone is putting out good albums, and is a good person, then i’ll support them, but if your FAKE you’re not getting my money. Period. If she put’s out good albums (because B-DAY was truely on the fence with a lot of people) then support. If not, she can kick rocks along with everyone else. I’ll end this by saying i’m glad this girl was able to make it in the entertainment business, because no offense, I cannot imagine her on anyones COLLEGE CAMPUS. I’m just sayin’…. when it comes to knowing how to promote herself, she’s good, but she is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. And why the hell did she make a Spanish album? I can barely stand to hear her speak ENGLISH, let alone struggle trying to speak SPANISH **shudders at the thought**
P.S Thanks to CL for posting this because i’m sure this post is going to get real interesting real soon. LOL!

@55, I have a friend who is Panamanian, and she told me that she use to be racist of blacks, and that they didn’t hang out with them when they were younger. This is funny to me and sad because when you look at her the only way you would know she was latin is her name and her accent. other than that, she look just as black as me. It’s sad, black, latino, asian, anyone of ethnic origin, we aspire to be like white people ultimatly..We want do these things that generally white people do just so we can say that we can do it too. A prime example of this…. anyone of working age, and anyone in corporate position. Look how blacks treat each other. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ll notice a black person talk all friendly and be all buddy “chum-chum” with a white co-worker, but when they run across a fellow black co-worker. we wont say hi, or even give eye contact. we may nod heads and that it, when 10 min earlier we couldnt get you to shut the hell up talking to Bradly in his cubicle.
has anyone else ever noticed or experienced that on the job?

Poor B, she probably did not think before saying it but you just can’t go around saying you wish you were from another culture. It won’t sound good no matter what she meant to say. I wonder if she reads but I tend to think not a whole lot except for songs. She should look into expanding her vocabular or getting speech lessons. You would think her desire to be an actress would give her a better speaking ability but some people are just not gifted with being able to speak well. She just sounds so pre-teen for someone who is a grown. I’m sure she regrets a lot of things she has said because she gets qouted after the fact. Sometimes SILENCE IS GOLDEN.
THE LESS YOU SAY THE BETTER OFF YOU ARE WHEN YOU ARE A CELEBRITY. SHE SHOULD KNOW THAT BY NOW.

Wow.Now I thought Rihanna said some stupid things. But this..I have no words for.I mean I’m sure she probably didn’t mean to put her race down. But she could have a sat there and thought about the question before she opened her mouth to answer it.I know her public speaking skills aren’t that good. But wow Bey.I was actually giving you a hand of applause for not sayin something like “I know Bajans, they always talk crap.”…Hmm…But this sounds just as bad.I really want to see how she will explain herself .
I will admit the culture is beautiful. But the African American culture is just as beautful.I’m African American and Japaneese. And wish I was nothing but.
