BEYONCE: “I’M JUST JEALOUS THAT I WASN’T BORN LATINA”

Saturday, September 8, 2007

belatina.jpg
Beyonce stirs debate yet again //

Believe it or not, Beyonce has stirred up more debate across the internet again. The singer who was recently interviewed by Latina Magazine, spoke on her cross-over appeal, as well as her success with singing in Spanish.

When she was asked a question about her Latina fans, Beyonce responded with a comment that is sure to cause some drama around her camp. Read on:

Latina: What’s one thing that you’d like to tell your Latina fans?

Beyonce: I would thank them for embracing me. I did radio (promotions) this morning for hours and hours and I noticed a big difference between speaking to all of the Latino stations and speaking to the pop stations or the other stations. With the Latino stations, there was so much love and everyone is so genuine. I’m just jealous that I wasn’t born Latina. I wish I had been because the culture is so beautiful. I’m very grateful Latinos are embracing me. [ CLICK HERE TO READ FULL INTERVIEW ]

I hate to be blunt, but you can’t be that popular and consistently be unable to give a proper interview. She really needs to take some classes in public speaking, ASAP! Also, I would have to agree with Brown Sista and say Beyonce was probably doing some “butt-kissing” and it just came out wrong. Now, let’s see how this new “b-drama” is going to unfold.

What’s your take on her comment?

Angel,

I agree that Beyonce was probably doing some MAJOR “butt-kissing” when she made that statement and it just came out the wrong way. And who knows maybe she said it a different way and the magazine printed it like they wanted. Magazines have been known to “twist” celebrities words.

But I also agree with you that you can’t be this popular and not be able to give a proper interview. I like Beyonce and I think she’s a great entertainer, but she really needs to work on her communication skills. I”ve always given her the benefit of the doubt, but she needs to do better.

After taking time reading this interview it proves that she’s such an air-head. Even if she didn’t mean it why sell-out to please other races? or was she showing her true colors?

Yup she was saying what she thought needed to be said to appeal to that audience. It wasn’t the right thing to say, however she meant it as a complimen. Admittedly others could see it as her not being proud of her own culture. But I guess. I don’t see it as a big deal. She’s trying to sell records.

We all know that Beyonce is not well spoken, this is just another example. I think she was trying to pay Hispanics a compliment and had no idea that the way this came out could offend her own culture. She needs a media spokesperson and she needs to not answer any questions until she runs it by them for a check first. With all of her resources and as long as she has been doing this, you would think she would have gotten a lot better at public speaking.

I agree 100% with M-Saw. Then people wonder why her momma is always there with her at interviews. It’s because they know they got a dumb ass daughter who is likely to say the wrong things.

I am somewhat of a fan of Beyonce. I like her old music, but I do think she is over-rated and over-worshipped. I can see this statement coming out wrong and people taking it to mean she is not proud to be black. Although I don’t think she meant it that way, it’s like come on now, you are 26 years old now…You shouldn’t be that much of a ding bat…But then again, you can’t learn common sense in school.

I love her to death but “What the hell”? I’m confused because I remember seeing an interview where she stated that she was a proud black woman….B must’ve been tired because it isn’t the Latinas that have made her ass rich, it’s the black is she going to wish she were white next? Like I said I’m a huge fan but she kinda pissed me off with that comment.

21.

gg boo

Saturday, September 8, 2007 /

I don’t know about that one….Surely she just should have left it at saying she appreciates the Latin culture - maybe made some parallels between her own and the the Latino community. She bumbled it, no biggie..

MAYBE BEYONCE JUST HAS COMPLEX ISSUES REGARDING BEINGA BLACK WOMAN. ALTHOUGH THIS DOESN’T MAKE IT RIGHT- TRUTHFULLY, MANY WOMEN DO. FOR EXAMPLE, BEYONCE SAID, IN REPLY TO THEIR NEW VIDEO, “BEAUTIFUL LIAR”, WITH HER AND SHAKIRA- THAT SHE COULD NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HER AND SHAKIRA ON MORE THAN ONE OCCAISION….
RIGHT.
SHAKIRA IS A 4′11 BEAUTIFUL WOMAN WITH BLONDE CURLY HAIR AND YOU ARE 5′6, PRETTY NONETHELESS, A BIT MORE GOLDEN TONED WITH HONEY BLONDE EXTENSIONS SUITABLE FOR A BALCK WOMAN.. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE…
BUT YES- AS SAID BEFORE, MANY OF US BLACK WOMEN HAVE A COMPLEX. I KNOW I HAVE MY INSECURITES, THAT’S WHY I LET MY HAIR GROW LONG PAST MY BRA STRAP AND I FEAR CUTTING IT BECAUSE “LONG HAIR ON A BLACK WOMAN COMES OFF AS APPEALING” (IN THE WORDS OF MY EX). THAT’S WHY, DOMINICAN WOMEN WILL CONTINUE TO BLOW OUT YOUR HAIR AND THEIRS, BONE STRIAGHT TO ACHIEVE A MORE ATTRACTIVE, “EUROPEAN LOOK”. MAYBE THAT’S WHY CELEBS, SUCH AS TYRA, JLO, AND KIMORA, HAVE SHAVED INCHES DOWN OFF THEIR NOSE IN ORDER TO HIGHLIGHT THE BRIDGE IN THE MIDDLE FOR A MORE, POINTY, “WHITE” PROFILE SHOT.
THEN AGAIN- MAYBE SHORTY JUST REALLY FELT LIKE SUCH A COMMENT WAS A GOOD PLOY FOR MARKETING. WHO KNOWS.

Someone always staying out of conflict shouldn’t have said that but she should start being more blunt. Let keep it real…pop, rock, and hip hop stations and magazines speak about fashion, love lives, and scandal. They all give the same interview, with the exception of Sister2Sister. I love magz but it’s the truth. She probably doesn’t get pressure to speak about Jay-Z or falling or nonsense on Latino stations. I’m not the biggest fan or against her. I couldn’t do what she does. I’d like the money but I could stand the attention and 18-24 hours of work. I’d hate every mainstream US station and magz asking the same questions or trying to trick or pressure me into answering something I didn’t want to. She wants this lifestyle and knows what comes along with it and deals with it and I think she is speaking the truth. But fans of any race will build you up to tear you down. Non-Latin Americans shouldn’t be stereotyped.

35.

Lord Hannibal

Saturday, September 8, 2007 /

She should be wishing she’d think and then speak. Pandering is one thing but she went overboard. For all of her talent, she is perhaps the most consistently ignorant performer in recent memory. If she’d been born Latina, she wouldn’t be nearly as successful as she is now. Imbicile.

My Goodness…..I think she was just expressing her appreciation for being welcomed by a new audience…those weren’t the right words to use…or it could have been twisted to make it sound offensive…god the media wants to take probably what was a misuderstanding and blow it out of proportion…I’m pretty sure there was a time in everybody’s life where they said something REALLY bad or stupid and they wish they could take it back! At any age……we are human…nobody’s perfect…

Oh, and lets be honest… most African Americans claim to be “Indian” (Native Amer.) and many black Latinos with skin and hair like mine don’t accept being called black. We are Afro. Amer, Afro-Latino, Haitian, Caribbean, African, and many other races and ethnicities. Our moder hip-hop culture has accepted and embraced Latinos whether they are of African decent or not. This is a beautiful thing. Let’s not get on her for wanting a little Latin blood and wanting to grow up knowing the lingo and culture when our last two female hosts on a BET show were Latino of non African Decent. Our magazines report info on popular Latin stars. 4 or 5 of the women on BET’s top 25 most beautiful Black women were Latinos that weren’t black. Hey, I wouldn’t mind having Daniel Sunjata, Frankie G, Adam Rodriguez (CSI), Jorge Santiogo (UFC), or Ricardo Chavira on some of our countdown and magazines. There are beautiful people (like in any ethnicity), a beautiful language, delicious food, and a beautiful culture. The women are really accepted in hip-hop and pop and she is one of the only African Americans accepted into their culture. I can see what Beyonce would like to have experienced more of.

I agree with comment 48 I don’t think she ment for the comment to come as if she hates being in the rich culture of blackness, she just wanted to you know give them a compliment. I wonder if she ever heard the comment think before you speak!! There a reason for that! i dont know. her statement seems like a slight attack against the black & pop radio stations…maybe she’s saying she feels more love from the Latin community because everyone else seems to stay hating. I also have to agree with Brian, because she has been doing a lot of promotion for her “Irrempezable” CD, and thats been all over MTV Tres.

All that being said, I still think that she slipped up by saying this. And I mean slipped up BIG TIME. A LOT of people (black people especially) are going to have a field day with this, simply because she made a statement that was not put together very well. She was probably excited and couldn’t get her thoughts together properly. I’ve seen her do that quite frequently in interviews. Maybe a little more media training would help with that…Personally, I’m gonna chalk it up to her being a below average speaker. If she meant what she said THE WAY SHE SAID IT, then, wow that’s a shame. But I’m pretty sure she would never say anything to intentionally spark a firestorm with her fans, her friends and her family.

Also….ROTFL @#40!!! ha ha.

Come on, ya’ll…I was being sarcastic before, but really??? Are you shocked that she misspoke? She’s an idiot…She also said people didn’t flock to her character in Dream Girls because she wasn’t a stereotype… People don’t take her seriously, or else that would have made the press as either her calling Jennifer Hudson’s character/performance a perpetuation of a stereotype OR saying that black people aren’t accustomed to “classy, understated” (her words) representations of themselves…. Cause she was definitely doing both those things, but nobody cared because nobody takes her serious… She’s an idiot with a list of adjectives (I’m not being funny, I really think she has a list of adjectives. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed adjectives are the whole of her vocabulary?????)

Speak on it Angel!

Its one thing to try and sell records, but when you become a sell out theres something wrong. Theres nothing wrong with her trying to appeal to the Spanish market, but that was a pretty ignorant comment to make even if she meant it as a compliment. Was it really that hard just to say I love the culture?

It was pretty messed up also what she said about the other radio stations. There cool when they play her records right? They are the ones that got her music out there and she wouldnt be on the level she is now with out them.

I really lost a lot of respect for her. She just slapped a lot of black people in the face that supported her.

Expect an explanation real soon!

Wow! Come on now folks, let’s cut her a little slack, we all know she’s not the most articulate of the bunch. I’m sure she wasn’t saying she doesn’t appreciate being black, I think she was just trying to compliment LATINAS and it came out the wrong. Like everyone said… just a little @ss kissing to sell a few more albums. Real talk though i’ve seen people on here say that “she has so many haters she must be doing something RIGHT”, it might be something Beyonce is doing WRONG. I have never seen an entertainer that has just as many people that LOVE them…HATE them. JANET, MARY J., ALICIA KEYS, MARIAH…. all these ladies have more people that LOVE them then HATE them. And all those women have been able to master being everywhere (as far as publicity) and not get on people’s nerves. So why can’t BEYONCE do it? For some reason, BEYONCE seems to be split right down the middle… either people love her or can’t stand her @ss. It’s weird. Me, i’m on the fence.

While i’m sure she didn’t mean anything by this statement, I can’t help but to laugh at people making excuses for it. When HALLE BERRY said that when she was younger she wished to be ” cured of her blackness” (because she didn’t know any better) folks jumped on her for it. When she was born half-white and was raised in an all white part of town, which i’m sure she got teased a lot. So her feeling that way at a young age isn’t that far fetched. What is Beyonce’s excuse? Nothing. I have never seen J. Lo when she’s on the cover of VIBE magazine saying she wished she was born BLACK, just to sell a few records. The LATINO’S would have torn her @ss up. LOL! Every time you turn around BEYONCE talking about CREOLE this and CREOLE that. My fathers entire family is CREOLE, i’m light skinned, yet i’m not preaching about CREOLE at all times, I understand being proud…but d@mn, i’m BLACK!! Wouldn’t change it for the world…. that’s why I can’t stand when people say “we should support these people, because they represent US’, no she doesn’t, BEYONCE represents BEYONCE. If your going to say that, at least say that about someone that is not just cute, but worldly and well spoken. If someone is putting out good albums, and is a good person, then i’ll support them, but if your FAKE you’re not getting my money. Period. If she put’s out good albums (because B-DAY was truely on the fence with a lot of people) then support. If not, she can kick rocks along with everyone else. I’ll end this by saying i’m glad this girl was able to make it in the entertainment business, because no offense, I cannot imagine her on anyones COLLEGE CAMPUS. I’m just sayin’…. when it comes to knowing how to promote herself, she’s good, but she is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. And why the hell did she make a Spanish album? I can barely stand to hear her speak ENGLISH, let alone struggle trying to speak SPANISH **shudders at the thought**

P.S Thanks to CL for posting this because i’m sure this post is going to get real interesting real soon. LOL!

@55, I have a friend who is Panamanian, and she told me that she use to be racist of blacks, and that they didn’t hang out with them when they were younger. This is funny to me and sad because when you look at her the only way you would know she was latin is her name and her accent. other than that, she look just as black as me. It’s sad, black, latino, asian, anyone of ethnic origin, we aspire to be like white people ultimatly..We want do these things that generally white people do just so we can say that we can do it too. A prime example of this…. anyone of working age, and anyone in corporate position. Look how blacks treat each other. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ll notice a black person talk all friendly and be all buddy “chum-chum” with a white co-worker, but when they run across a fellow black co-worker. we wont say hi, or even give eye contact. we may nod heads and that it, when 10 min earlier we couldnt get you to shut the hell up talking to Bradly in his cubicle.

has anyone else ever noticed or experienced that on the job?

Poor B, she probably did not think before saying it but you just can’t go around saying you wish you were from another culture. It won’t sound good no matter what she meant to say. I wonder if she reads but I tend to think not a whole lot except for songs. She should look into expanding her vocabular or getting speech lessons. You would think her desire to be an actress would give her a better speaking ability but some people are just not gifted with being able to speak well. She just sounds so pre-teen for someone who is a grown. I’m sure she regrets a lot of things she has said because she gets qouted after the fact. Sometimes SILENCE IS GOLDEN.

THE LESS YOU SAY THE BETTER OFF YOU ARE WHEN YOU ARE A CELEBRITY. SHE SHOULD KNOW THAT BY NOW.

Wow.Now I thought Rihanna said some stupid things. But this..I have no words for.I mean I’m sure she probably didn’t mean to put her race down. But she could have a sat there and thought about the question before she opened her mouth to answer it.I know her public speaking skills aren’t that good. But wow Bey.I was actually giving you a hand of applause for not sayin something like “I know Bajans, they always talk crap.”…Hmm…But this sounds just as bad.I really want to see how she will explain herself .

I will admit the culture is beautiful. But the African American culture is just as beautful.I’m African American and Japaneese. And wish I was nothing but.

@66, That’s what wrong with this world. too many people feel like people owe them something. Beyonce doesn’t owe anything to you as far as saying she wish she was latino…hell, if she wish she was half chinese and australian it’s her perogotive. The same as if Jlo or Shakira both said tomorrow they wish they were black…so! They don’t owe anything to their race. We may fit in the same ethinicty, but Beyonce’s sould isn’t bound to yours…this goes beyond race, that’s with life in general. People don’t owe you anything. If you want something in life, you do the work!

Beyonce is a blatant idiot! I would of course like to applaud CL for finally realizing the fact that Beyonce gives terrible interviews. Her answers are the same mono-tone generic giberish for every question in every interview she has ever done. It’s like she’s been programmed to do it that way. But you can’t go against the machine, you go against it’s maker. Beyonce doesn’t just give bad interviews, the girl can’t speak at all and it’s mainly because she’s not educated the way she needs to be. I guess her big shot no holds bar father didn’t think of that when he’s pimping her to the media. First she only makes her music for black people and now she wishes she was latina… And we have young girls who actually look up to her… Beauty isn’t everything people and it will eventually fade if Tina Knowles is anything to go by, lol, however, dumb is forever! And it’s does also reflect in her music and if you don’t know what I’m talking about just go back and listen to every track on her albums including those of Destiny’s Child. She is 26 for godsakes you would think that as much as she focuses on stabbing her so called friends or ex bandmates in the back, and her horrible acting that she would care as much about her speech. It’s just really really really sad! Let’s set the standards higher people. That said, what do you think her and Jay talk about… I’ve heard Jay speak and he seems somewhat intelligent and articulate enough I can’t imagine how they’ve last this long. I guess love does conquer all because I couldn’t get with someone who stuck on basic 4th grade English!

I’m not surprised. Why? Because she’s illiterate. Because she “thinks” she’s some sort of business person with the House of Dereon and because she’s managed to accumulate a few hits, we’ve automatically credited her intellect account with all these points. She’s not bright. I’ve heard her speak before and it just makes me cringe (anybody remember how dumb she looked when she was called out on tape about the PETA fur coat thing?)

OK - maybe that’s a bit harsh. But I will say that she probably meant to say, “I’ve always been fascinated by Latino heritage. Latinos have a rich and full culture that’s just infectious to be around. And to know that I have Latino fans is really flattering and actually very uplifting. I love all of my Latino bros and sisters.”

This is what happens when you go from H.S. to stardom. (Take a note. Learn from the mistakes of others, kids.)

I know some people who have trouble expressing their thoughts, opinions or feelings due to a lack of schooling or poor education by some of the schools that they have attended so on that note I can understand a person using words of out context. However, I think Beyonce knew exactly what she was saying and while many deem her as an airhead I believe she said what many black women feel which is both sad and unbelievable at this point in history. What I found most amazing about these comments was that Beyonce has the physical features that many darker skinned black women think is “beautiful ” yet she still would rather be something other than what she is. If I was a person from another nation and came to this country as a visitor and looked at magazines, billboard ads and television I would think that there was only one color that is seen as beautiful and flawless and for that society plays a big part in the imbalance. However, we as people must not define what is “beautiful” based on others perceptions. This task may be difficult because not everyone has high self esteem but if something is not done to make each individual who feels as though they are less than another person based solely on the color of their skin or shape of their bodies we will continue with an endless cycle of self hate and self loathing.

Simple! My take is that this woman has very little in the way of intelligence, and was caught off guard in an interview yet again.
She cannot articulate or process any meaningful thought on her own, which is why she comes off as dumb during interviews.
The reason she said this foolywang shyt is because she chose to stray away from her normal scripted replies (like the “I can’t cook” shyt that she runs).
Stick to the script next time, Beyonce or go read a book!

OK Ignorants..

Beyounce is a bonnified TOOL as we all know!

#1 Latina is not a culture, it is an ethnicity!!

#2 There is different “Latin Cultures” because it is different cultures in Latin America. So you can be from Trinidad, Brazil, Mexico or Argentina.. And yes…. Africa has a big contribution is all of those cultures..

Beyounce is an uneducated ditz! We are all part of that culture because when our ancestors came on ships, they were divided among the colonies..

And by the way, Hispanic is technically people from Dominican republic and Haiti. There was a time when Hispanola was one island until the French ruled Haiti (not for long) and the Spaniard D.R.

Please people, stop the ignorance and read a book from a reliable source!!

Africans are responsible for all of the major dances and music of the Western hemisphere..
Tango, Rhumba, Salsa, meringue, Zuk, Calypso, Reggae, Soca, Kaiso, Samba, Steelpan, drumming, Rap, R&B, ROCK n ROLL, Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, The Shango culture, etc..

Ignorance is killing our minds!!

Beyounce needs to learn to speak and not sound like a 5 year old. I just think she is the dumbest black woman I have come across that is in the media, just right after KeKe “Pointy Nose” Wyatt!.

@71

Yes, but that’s a phenomenon that will continue because black people, like you said, aspire to be like white people. That’s why I always say that blacks look at the white man as god. All I mean when I say that is that they want to live, breathe, and think in his image. When black people say that they want to be “equal” to whites, all that could possibly mean is that they want to be the white man or be accepted by him because according to the Constitution, black people are already “equal”. Allegedly. Black people are too double-minded. They don’t know what they want so they never get what they need. Your two comments are the perfect example. You went from, in post 71, noticing something that is peculiar to our race and is the absolute truth. Then in post 76 it was like the Americanized mind-control kicked back in, lol. If color doesn’t matter and lineage doesn’t matter, then why do you notice that your black co-workers are more talkative with the white man? It shouldn’t matter to you. Either you see an issue or you don’t. Be consistent. I mean brother, honestly, those two posts were so contradictory and hypocritical, it looked like they were written by two different people.

I think Beyonce just meant to be complimentary to the hispanics and just went a little too far because she’s not really articulate enough to speak tactfully and know how far is too far. It was also probably a Freudian slip because the hispanics are far more supportive of their stars than black people, especially some black women, are of Beyonce. I’ve never heard hispanics speak about Jennifer Lopez like some black women speak about Beyonce. I think because black people are so gifted as a race that all black people feel like they could be where certain black celebrities are, had they gotten certain breaks.

This is just the same inferiority complex shared by some of our most illustrious entertainers - Halle Berry, Wesley Snipes, The Jacksons, Taye Diggs … The list is endless. The fact is, these celebrities don’t know what weight their comments carry with ‘others’ that aren’t black. I have defended and held Beyonce in high esteem based on her work but this kind of thoughtless, shorted sighted comment exposes her for what she is, a tree without roots. Her hurtful disregard of her ancestral heritage is a sad reminder that although long abolished, slavery still haunts us. My wish is our black entertainers, athletes or any other profession with some sort of repute would carefully consider their words before opening theirs mouths. Basically keep their insecurities to themselves!!!!

What makes me laugh at this post is her few STANS salt and peppered throughout this forum calling some of these people “Haters” for stating the obvious. Hell, even a casual fan, such as myself can say the girl isn’t exactly a scholar. I am also not blind to the fact that BEYONCE is a tad bit OVERRATED in all departments, and has been able to make her money off of being such. Can’t knock the hustle, continue fooling them Beyonce!!

On a side note: I pray that BEYONCE never falls off because her STANS will have a MASS SUICIDE on the Knowles front porch. Poor things. Get some self esteem for yourselves, and quit trying to live through that girl, she’s not worried about you, nor should she be worried about anyone else. If people are making their own money and are fly their d@mn selfs (and are not trying to be entertainers) then why the hell would they be jelous of Beyonce? Exactly. She could’ve simply complimented about how great the culture is by pointing out some of the key things that culture has….but then again she doesn’t know anything shes too worried about kissin butt to sell records…the only thing she hasn’t done to sell records is sell her soul, yet…..im not hate i wish her the best…she needs some classes

Rantings of a Stan in chipmunk voice:

Back off you fucking haters! Why can’t you dumbass bitches see that Beyonce was just paying a simple compliment to the Latino community! She’s always got shit talked about her, man I hate this fucking site I wish you’d all just kick rocks like the haters you are, fucking bitches, haters! HATERS! You guys just can’t see that we love Beyonce and need her in order to stabilize our own worthless lives, so just leave her the fuck alone and let her shine. You haters aren’t worth shit; she’s laughing all the way to the bank while you analyze this bull and you think you’re bringing her down, but you aren’t, haters, HATERS!!! All of you kick rocks hoes! So the fuck what if she sounds a little less than intelligent in the interview, she’s not a fucking rocket scientist, so she doesn’t have to sound smart, and everyone that thinks she should are just HATERS! Now fuck off you haters, fucking hater ass haters, drink some haterade bitches, hatin’ haterlicious haters!!!

Honestly, I hope this goes no further than here (I say this as I keep coming back to this window lol) because I am glad for the bit of Beyonce break we’ve gotten…She embarrasses me, not her, but our “Beyonce fever” It’s different to lust after her (as many lust after Pamela Anderson and Jessica Simpson) but we take it further…it’s worship, really, it is. I remember hearing, black people “won’t break rank.” Remember Bill Maher said that? About black women not saying rappers (gangster, I guess) were misogynists and harmful to the culture?? And, someone told me that although Justice Thomas is opposed, ideologically, on nearly every issue, we support him fervently because “he is black.” I AM NOT, in any way saying we should not feel a sense of connectedness…but there is a point when it seems blind, foolish. And, that’s the way it is with Beyonce and black people…

People are just making entirely too much out of the comment. Of course the girl is proud of her African American Heritage. She was just saying in a nut-shell that the hispanice culture embraced her with much love minus the negativity. In other words she wished that her own race and ethnic back ground would do the same minus the negativity and the drama.

OK for the people that don’t understand history..

Here is the problem with Bouncy’s comments:

Black women are at the bottom of the dating chain in this country. We are constantly portrayed as loud, not attractive, ignorant and classless in the media, especially when we are stereotyped by black men in the media (Taye, Wesley, Charles Barkley).

The next thing is that LATINA MAGAZINE doesn’t showcase a variety of Latinas. We tend to see the ones that have more white features, that you would never know that there are a variety of Latin looks. Let’s just say that the darkest we see is Rosario and even she has complex issues. Anyone seen the Spanish Novelas?

NOw this is why Bouncy’s comments are dangerous. You have young girls bombarded with images of what beauty is (WHITE or almost WHITE looking), then you have this idiot saying she is jealous she wasn’t born Latina. Most people think all Latinas look like Daisy fuentes or Jessica “I am not Latina”Herpes-Alba! So these girls will automatically associate beauty + Bouncy’s comments + The few Latina’s in the media.. I know it sounds crazy, but it is so true..

These comments are just going to add to the mounting issues black females face!
Bouncy can praise the Latin community without sounding like an idiot!

#144 about the “loud, classless” thing…Beyonce said it too…As I earlier replied, she said, in that Larry King Live interview with Star Jones, “people didn’t gravitate toward my character because she wasn’t a stereotype. She was classy and understated.” Now what is that, if not perpetuating stereotypes? She thinks it isn’t, but it is…because saying that we did not respond to her character’s classiness makes it seems as though that representation is surreal, farfetched… So, what is that really saying? ?????

Hmm, It’s a bit foul for homegirl to say that and I think the chicks needs to take some major classes on public speaking. I mean, even I know you don’t say some stuff like that and know it will get back to the states. Someone of her stature has been trained and taught how to speak and give interviews, but apparently, B missed a few classes. Ok, I’m back. I see some folks want to get their trousers all ruffled and such. Bring it down a notch and smell the cornbread! I’ve been coming here for a while and just now joined. Some cats get upset when others speak their opinion. It’s ok hun, don’t be mad. Now I like Beyonce myself and heck she is human like the rest of as and some people just say dumb stuff without knowing it. I hope no one goes off on me for being real. I respect ya and will continue to so long as I can get it back.

Now, Beyonce is crazy for her remark and I’m sure she will catch some flack for it and when she does, she will maybe retract her comments if a) the media blows it up and takes it out of context (according to her crazy parents of course) and b) she tries to regergitate (sp?) her comments. Until then, the heffa will be known as miss “Flunky in speech class 101″! Peace to all of you, and be blessed as well.

I think its hypocritical to criticize Beyonce for ‘dissing’ her culture, when the majority of us (Beyonce included) don’t know about our own. When our kids grow up learning more about hip hop, than our African heritage. When we continue to support artists that refer to women as bitches and hoes, and each other as niggas. Sometimes I wish I was apart of a culture of unity, not degradation and separation. Sometimes I wish I was apart of a culture of peace, not violence and anger. Everyone’s so quick to say hip hop is dead. F hip hop. Our culture is dead. Blogs and other outlets have divided and scrutinized us, instead of uniting and lifting us up. If only we could get this hyped up, and contact our local politicians and demand changes in our educational systems. We’ll rather write about a pop singer’s faux pas, than the president’s continued and purposely misleading statements about the state of our troops. My point is, if you want to get on a high horse, choose a taller one. Because, there are so many issues affecting you that you could change with as quick of a response you gave Beyonce.

WOW!!! I really like Beyonce…. a lot, but that one comment-
I’m not surprised but quite disappointed. I don’t think it was “ass kissin” at all. It seems like over recent years, Beyonce has been trying convince everyone and make it clear that she’s not “full black”, making sure we all know that she’s Creole. She’s black when it’s convient but she defitnitely makes sure “she doesn’t offend {whitey}” or that “{they} feel comfortable around her”. I remember when I use to feel/think like that. When I was younger and dumb, before I found out the truth. Beyonce needs to read that Breaking the Psychological Chains of Slavery, then she’ll be headed to a path of self righteousness and self love. We can sit here and play it off like, “Oh, she just playing (hehehehe)” or “She was wanting her Hispanic fans to feel good”, LIKE HELL! Our sister is lost ya’ll. Pray for her. Sorry I wrote this much. Peace~

Here we go again, jumping on some pointless news about Beyonce and making it an issue.

So she said something ambiguous. Wow. Did she shave her hair off? Hell no, is she on crack and scratching her boyfriends face up?
Are you people so happy with mediocrity that when something special comes along you LOOK for trouble just to try and bring it down to that level of crazy that you love i.e. Spears, Winehouse and Lohan.

You guys are pathetic and as a voice for the black online community, its a shame that you are praising perhaps one of the only good role models for our community left. Oh wait, I guess you praise Rihanna so that surely makes up for it *rolls eyes*

LOL at people making statements like “im SURE she didn’t,” or “she didn’t mean it that way.” Unless you are a mind reader, how do you know EXACTLY what she meant.

Sorry, i take people at their words…and she said she’s jealous she wasn’t born latina. Say what you want, but i believe her. Everything about her says she feels this way, big ass long ass lacefronts all the time (she can’t go pee without one on), the heavy makeup, even the natural look is heavy makeup. Every year she seems to distance herself from her black heritage more and more in terms of her appearance. In 3 years, trust, we won’t recognize her. She jacked Shakira’s style before most black people even knew who Shakira was…i have actually heard people say Shakira is copying Beyonce! Oh my God, Shakira was huge before beyonce’s solo career took off. Shakira was big when Beyonce was with Destiny’s child. Shakira even did a pepsi or coke (can’t remember which one) before Beyonce did it.

Beyonce is fake, has always been fake, and i dont think none of us know the real her, and that’s the way she wants it. Nothing about her seems original, and i mean nothing. She steals dance moves from other people and claim she made it up, she steals songs lyrics and claim she’s a song writer (not just a hook writer), and lord, i can go on. I don’t know the real her, but i know what we are presented with is fake because she makes contradictory statements all the time. She lies like the wind blows. And she seems to do it all for maintenance of a unrealistic image.

I sincerely feel sorry for the young girls who will be hurt by this statement. People are trying to minimize what she said, but the fact is that she said it, no matter the reason. Some young girls might be confused by this, and won’t INFER anything of this statement, they’ll simply take her at her word as i did with this statement.

I wish some people would just keep their biscuit eating mouth shut if all they’re going to do is cause a ruckus when they open it. People say beyonce is intelligent, but i can’t tell cause everything is done for her. Can someone name one thing that she’s been successful at that she’s actually done on her own, without the assistance of her mother, father, sister, pr crew, marketing team, dance teacher, and the camel? I would sincerely like to look at her differently, but i’m a realist, just can’t see it.

Personally, I wouldn’t sweat it. Beywatch is a Black Creole. Anyone who knows those folks know that they don’t consider themselves “100%” black (whatever the HELL that means), anyway. It’s like the time Tiger came out and labeled himself a “Cablinasian” (again, WTH???). She’s an entertainer; it’s not like she’s saving the world, or running for president or something. @184

yeah, but i actually don’t think it was a mistake…sounds like she said what she was actually thinking, though it was politically incorrect to some people. And i believe her because 1) she’s grown, and i would think she knows what’s coming out of her mouth and she know’s she’s on a interview. True, people can mis-speak, however, there are decisions she’s made in her life in fthe public’s eye that supports this statement of her wanting to be “latina” in my eyes. 2) Like i said, her appearance, jacking shakira’s style, now admitting she’s always loved shakira, doing a cross over album marketed toward the latino communities. Just too many arrows pointing in that direction. And alot of people have similar thoughts of coveting features or traits of another race/culture, but just keep these thoughts to themselves as not to harm others. But when you are a big name like Beyonce, to me, you sort of have a responsibility to watch what comes out of your mouth. You know, mistake or not, seriously, i can see some young black girls who worship her sincerely hurt by this statement, whether she mis-spoke or not.

I think if we could all stop acting like celebrities are the spokespeople for truth, things would be a lot easier.

Beyonce says dumb shit. So does her boyfriend. So do all his artists. IT HAPPENS.
How many times have YOU been misunderstood or quoted wrong? I can say I hate beans and rice.. and 50 minutes from now, it’ll be.. “She said she hates Mexicans. They smell like beans and rice”. In general, people twist up your words.. and people say dumb things. Theres probably someone thinking Im racist and Im attacking Mexicans. “Cause being Mexican isnt just about eating beans and rice. Stereotype!”. *sigh. People take lint and try to make dust balls. Its just not that serious.

Of course Latina magazine was going to print that part. How many people are going to go buy the magazine? LOTS! And how many more people are going to buy the copy next month after exposure to this one? LOTS. C’mon.. its business. She could have said a lot more after “I wish I was Latina……”.. but they can only make the interview so long.

but on the real beyonce never been good at doing interview…definitely not her strong point

I think from young as soon as little girls are exposed to the “media” we develop complexes about our culture and our skin colors unaware of the fact that every culture that is a culture especially latin culture (being that we are all one) originated from the African culture. I think beyonce making that comment as a sucessful black woman whether light or dark is wrong whether it was because she was ass kissing or not. There are a lot of little girls and grown women that look up to her and are proud that she is a sucessful black woman and her making that comment was really unnecessary. i know she didn’t mean or want for that comment to come out the way that it did but it did. I forgive her because she unfortunately does not know any better.

P.S. Black is where its at! ;)

@192

Sounds like a bunch shouda, woulda, coulda, and none of the “this is what she said.”
Sounds like excuses, maybe she meant this, maybe she said more and it was cut, whatever. The only thing people can comment on here is what is actually posted here on the blog. And maybe what she said was taken out of context, but actually, she shouldn’t went no where near a statement of that sort. Most entertainers have classes and coaches for this kind of stuff. She’s in the game long enough to know what’s forbidden terrritory…She makes damn sure before the interview starts that they don’t ask her about certain things, she tells them what areas they can question her on…..So it’s not far fetched for her fans to hold her responsible for what comes out of her trap. And you’re right, things can get twisted, and you gave the example of not liking beans and rice, and it be miscontrued that you don’t like mexicans. But everyone knows that celebrities should keep their likes and dislikes to themselves for political reasons, that’s “making a star 101.” I’m sure she’s taken that course. And if not, shame on her. I guess it can’t just simply be that the girl actually feels this way cause no one wants beyonce to fall off that pedestal. But i think stans more than anyone else expect that girl to be perfect….everyone else thats objectional can see her faults and strengths. I don’t think public speaking and knowing what to say is her strength, that’s why someone is usually always around for her interviews. I don’t see Ushers mom, Brandy’s mom, and Ashanti’s mom, sweating them on their interviews like Beyonce’s mom stay doing. But i believe we can now see the reason for that.

#182…I gotta disagree with ya, well sorta, you’ll see…
I am one of those people, a mind reader, I guess lol, as I believe it was merely opportunistic…she was sucking up, trying to move units. I’m sure she knows their history, similar to our own, with lookism (color complexes, namely) so I bet she knew she had to really turn it on to sell herself to them, “I wish I was born a latina” makes them want to excuse her skin (which, although light, is olive toned in comparison to their own).
But, I agree with you about her insincerity and constant illiterate contradictions. We watched a BET special on her a few years ago, and she said, to an interviewer “”I believe young girls should eat, have fun, enjoy their lives instead of worrying about diets and things like that.” And, it wasn’t two minutes later that she hinted, as a child might, at wanting a turkey dog and milk shake. A hint which her handler caught and shot down. The woman shook her head, really, shook her head and said “no, we got a video next week. Everything’s got to be tight” I promise you, I’ve seen few things more pathetic in my life. I felt sorry for her.
I’ve said many spiteful, disparaging things about her in this topic because…well, there is no excuse, I wanted to taunt her stans because I find hilarious, even the idea that she writes profound and artistic songs, that she designs individual, fashion forward pieces, that she is a believable actress… In other words, I wanted to lol. BUT I know that, ultimately, she is a great singer and even greater beauty…but as I am a realist (I am too, JSCENE) I know that she’s been overextended to the point of being almost a caricature.

I hear you…but can she even ass-kiss right? I mean there’s a way to do it where you don’t hurt any other race/sex groups. And why ass-kiss if you’re “beyonce.” Something must be going wrong in peddling this cd, cause if those numbers are true as you quoted them at $6,000 oh my land, she’s not getting much support from the latino communities, cause it’s more of them than us, and only $6,000 was purchased! That can’t be right.

I don’t think it was rehearsed, and i think she just had a moment of “telling the truth,” at a lost of words to answer the interviewers questions, and for once, she didn’t have the benefit of some sort of script.

This will not hurt beyonce one bit…i’m sure her father (the clean up man) will clean this one right on up. And for the next couple of outings, she’ll be accompanied by her mother.

I do not think Beyonce meant anything by her statement. Moma Knowles seems to have a pretty strong Black identity and has passed that on to her girls. Beyonce is pathetic. She is not articulate, and this is not the first time she has put her foot in her mouth. I saw her on MTV3 last week on TRL saying that she tells people she’s Dominican…. what a fool.
Her parents were so busy pimping her to the music industry, she never received an education, besides lessons on beginners, intermediate and advanced booty shakin’… and what’s even worse is I bet you she does not think anything is wrong with what she said…
She is really sad, and a reminder to all people to stay in school and be true to who you are.

@201, JSCENE
Nah, it won’t hurt her because people don’t care what she says…I mean, everyone agrees that she’s illiterate, it’s a general consensus, but no one cares because they’re too busy looking at her lol Now, they’ve added Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Johansen, the chick from Transformers… I mean, it’s all about looks now, everything entertainment is essentially one perverted peep show.
And, it turns out that her “sex appeal” is biting her in the butt, as our culture becomes more and more obsessed with looks, they divorce themselves from more meaningful things… So, you’ve got a situation where they don’t care how well she sings, they just want to look… And, as I said, since she has to compete with newer sex kittens (and, she’s slogging in that competition now) she finds herself in the situation where she’s not quite as hot and her actual talent (singing) is irrelevant. And, because of all this, she will fade into some sort of curious campy idol, touring arenas with her sequins and wigs and particular, sparse crowd (or “lambs” is it, Mariah says)

I actually read the article a week ago. Both haters and stans think they know what’s really happening, yet we all have no idea. It’s funny how we can analyze a person’s psyche, and probably never seen them in person.

I cannot speak for JSCENE, I do not want to, either…but I will say it: I don’t like her. Is that rewarding to the people who seem to have wanted, so long, for someone to overtly say it?? Well, I have, now. I do not like Beyonce.
Unfortunately, though, it has little to do with Beyonce. Hear me out. I don’t like her because she personifies this blind, thriftless attachment to beauty. I think women envy Beyonce because she’s an oppressing figure, oppressing because someone has decided to imbue, undeservedly, her with all these qualities. She is beautiful, so not only must we recognize her for the talents she possesses, but for those she doesn’t as well. She is an astute writer, a skilled actress, and a fashion savvy woman of the world…and why? Surely, she’s none of those things…but she is, in our culture, because she looks the way she does. In other words, people like looking at her, they like looking, period. So, they want the astute writer, the skilled actress, and the fashion savvy woman of the world to LOOK good, as everything for them is retinal… Ya get me?? Beyonce represents this oppressing occupation with beauty… And, so, I’ll say it. I don’t like her.

They do have a very vibrant culture and it is worthy of envy sometimes when you look at what we’re forced to call “black culture” in the USA. There’s very little to celebrate post 70’s to the present. We’ve been idle for too long and it’s time for our future generation to get out the damn TV and hit the books.

It’s called thinking before you speak which is obviously YOUR problem and HER. I would hate to have a child who didn’t apperciate where they came from or listen to a adult who thinks wishing they were someone else is acceptable……. so she can go ahead and make mnoney but money will not keep you out of HELL.

In her situation and so many other like her it is curse. Everyone tells her she’s the best so in her mind she has to be better but when you really aren’t that great to begin with and people idolize you because you have essentially influenced a group of already brainwashed people, you end up crashing and burning in the end. This AIN’T A SHOT AT BLACKS. SHE DOESN’T REALLY WANNA BE LATINA. SHE WAS APPRECIATING HER FANS…………….

………………..HOWEVER, AND LISTEN CAREFULLY:- BEYONCE IS NOT VERY WELL-SPOKEN AND HER COMMAND OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS LIKE A 3RD GRADER. WATCH ANY BEE INTERVIEW AND YOU WILL HEAR THE SAME DAMN SHIT EVERY GOTTDAMN TIME. SHEZUS CHRIST, THIS IS THE RESULT OF TINA AND MATTHEW-SELFISH-ASS-KNOWLES. THEY PULLED A SISTER STRAIGHT UP OUTTA HIGH SCHOOL, SO SHE COULDN’T GET HER ISH TOGETHER, SMARTNESS WISE AND HOW TO BE ELOQUENT. THEY SHOULDA KEPT HER IN SCHOOL, TILL SHE GRADUATED

I MEAN, LOOK AT WHEN AALIYAH WAS AROUND. DURING HER CAREER, SHE TOOK A BREAK TO COMPLETE HIGH-SCHOOL, AND SHE LEFT WITH A 4.0 GPA. IMPRESSIVE. CHECK BABYGIRL’S INTERVIEWS–SHE WAS SIMILAR AGE TO BEE, BUT SHE SPOKE SO MATURELY AND INTELLIGENTLY AT A YOUNG AGE.

ALSO, BRANDY, MONICA, AMERIE. THEY ALL HAVE GOOD COMMAND OF ENGLISH AND GRAMMAR.

DAMN EVEN GIRLS STRAIGHT OUTTA THE HOOD LIKE MARY J–SHE’S OLDER, BUT SHE OBVIOUSLY LEARNT HOW TO SPEAK IN A SOPHISTICATED AND INTERESTING MANNER. DIDN’T FANTASIA EVEN GET HER GED?

BEYONCE’S TALKING IS NEARLY ON THE SAME LEVEL AS JESSICA MUTHAFUCKIN SIMPSON.

She is not saying she wants to be something other than black. Yes, she is a little slow and very insecure but so are most women (insecure not slow). All this “why cant she love herself “is a bunch of shit too. Look at yourself in the mirror and say that crap with a straight face. Love the fact that you dont have long eyelashes and throw away those fake ones. Love the fact that your hair is kinky and stop putting that fire cream in your hair. Beyonce’ should know it don’t take much to be technically Latina if you were born in acountry with that Hispanicized culture or for her family to have descent from of those countries or w/e. I don’r like trhe hopping on the bandwagon sh-t. Being black was hot and well we see who it is right now so……….. If you wanna sing in Spanish more in the future find but try not to sound like you are jealous of another ETHNICITY and you wanna be like them so bad like being what you are isn’t good enough. -_-

I do respect that she enjoys spanish sounds and some Spanish music but no reason to butt kiss. BWAHAHA she got “schooled” by her Cuban friend…..that was especially funny mostly because one of my best friends is Cuban also….how interesting. But like oh no she didn’t realize the greatness she was working with lol. Alejandro Sanz is hot tho.

Her songs are hard enough to sing in ENGLISH/?! LOL WHAT?! Shame on her for saying that……she sounds um not too smart right there like ….. has she listened to her own music………pretty simple english there babes.

I meet beyonce and them a while ago when they just kicked farrah out of the group they were at a local mall near detroit. I was like 16 or 17 yrs. old. The fans were just to past dc3 and shake their hands. I did notice beyonce was exceptionally glad to give the white girls hugs and talk too them, she was basically all over the white girls and other non-black girls. When I got up on the platform first I shaked kelly’s hand and told them they are all lovely talented young ladies and Kelly smiled and was very pleasant and said thank you and I guess beyonce did not hear my complimenting them so I said Hi beyonce! can I have a hug? and she looked at me with her typical blank look in her eyes and just barely touched me. I mean I seen her hanging all over those white girls so I did not think she would mine hugging me, I was not trying to hug her in an inapproapriate way it was just a typical hug like you would hug your friend. I was just like wow! maybe she’s into white girls. The point I am triying to make is sometimes people act a different way to make people that would typically not like them to like them. I think she was just kissing ass so more non-black people would by her albums, since she knows she already has a black fan base, she wants to make sure her non-black fan base is large, so she can make even more money. I do not them she is as dumb as people think.

She says she has a Spanish BEST FRIEND?
She said: “I told one of my best friends, she’s Cuban, that I was working with him. And, she was like, “You’re lying!”

Does she mean Jay-z’s best friends that she vacations with? Cause last time I checked, none of her “3 best friends” (as she referred to Solange, Kelly and Michelle) was Spanish.

And I wish she would stop saying she wants to learn how to cook. She been saying teh same shit for the last 10 years! If you dont know, then forget about it and keep going to restaurants with Jay-z every day and night.

Last but not the least, what does she mean she has not had a real vacation since she was 13? What, those same ole same old Saint Tropez vacays are not real??? WTF! They do the same type of vacays every year. They got dough but not very creative with it.

Beyonce is my girl, but anyone who posts on here frequently knows my only problem with her, an inability to give an interview. She is an outstanding entertainer, model, etc. She is a product ONLY. Beyonce has the resources to better herself, and she chooses to only be a pretty product. That is my only fallout with Bee. Back in the day, Diana Ross and other entertainers were given lessons on how to enterview and ettiquette. Diana Ross even went on to meet the Queen of England. Now, with Bee’s interview skills, how would that work out. I’m saying it with much love…

Beyonce is done jacking J.Lo and now has moved on to Shakira

Sunday, September 9, 2007 /

I’m really curious to see what Beyonce knows about “latino” culture other than rice and beans and salsa dancing. Does she know how many different cultures Latino’s have. Just like black people, Latino’s come from a number of different countries and cultures. She’s just trying to kiss ass. She is soooooooo insencere.

‘m not surprised however, she’s been morphing into J.Lo and Shakira for years. I guess the transformation is almost done. This is why when people criticize Beyonce and the stans on this site say “you should support your own people” I just laugh, because half of the time our “own people” don’t even want to be who they are! Damn I’ve said it about other cultures, I see Indian culture as a strong family unit. Every time I go over my Indian friends house, they always embrace me as if I’m a part of their family. This is exactly what happens when you try to accomodate and satisfy everyone… She does an absolutely poor job on most interviews, because she is never just being herself.

I believe she was trying to ingratiate the latino fans, but any grown person talking about they want to be something other than what they are is just foolishness.

She probably had no ill intent, but that statement is a total disrespect to her mother and father.

As talented as she is, and as popular as she is, they really need to help her with her professional interactions and interviewing skills. I suspect they have, but when she strays from guidelines and what she’s taught is when there is always a problem.

I personally feel that people are misconstruing what this woman stated. She simply stated that she’s jealous she wasn’t born latina, because though she isn’t apart of their culture, they embraced her with much love as though she were. So, that made her think that hey! if they welcomed me with this much admiration as a black entertainer, I could only imagine how it would be if I were latina. because for 1 we as a black culture don’t stick together and the hispanic culture DOES! We consistently tear one another down! just to make ourselves seem better. I don’t blame her one bit, even if she did mean what she said I totally concur. I mean prime example look at what everyone who’s posted a comment opposing her response is doing, Repremanding this woman and calling her dumb, stupid, and not very articulate. I wish to know just how any of you would conduct yourselves and how articulate you would be if given the opportunity to be interviewed.

ALL SHE WAS DOING IS COMPLIMENTING THE LATIN CULTURE WHICH IS A VERY VIBRANT & ENTERTAINING & INTERESTING & DIVERSE CULTURE. I READ THIS ONCE, AND NEVER DID I GET FROM IT THAT SHE WAS SELLING OUT OR REGRETING BEING BLACK. I LOVE LATIN CULTURE AS WELL AND THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH WHAT SHE SAID. There’s an old saying, “kids are better seen than heard”. So should this girl. I’ve heard that Beyonce was slow- this interview proved it. She contradicted herself and insulted her race in the process. True, it’s not that serious, and she did it for PR, but dont diss the races who put you on the map while you’re trying to gain another race’s approval to make money off of them bimbo. Wow, I had no idea this girl was this SLOW. She should just stick to entertaining and give no more interviews. I agree with other comments, the girl is like a robot. If someones commands her to dance, she breaks out into those convulsive moves, if they yell sing, she screechs and wines out a tune, if someone yells interview, you start hearing the crickets until someone hands her a cue card on what to say.

Jayz has probably delayed marrying her, because all these years he’s been teaching her how to say “I do” and the rest of the wedding vows so she can get it right. LOL!!!! But seriously, I think that family’s greed for money is getting the best of them, now they are going after the Latino community. If I were Latino I would not be flattered by her making Spanish versions of her songs, because according to her interview, she’s not learning Spanish because she loves it so much, she’s only learning just enough to sing her songs in Spanish to make money off of them. I bet if you repeat her songs in Spanish to her right now, she would not have a clue on what you just said. Not impressive.

The level of hypocrisy on this site is off the meter today. I’m shocked. lol.

There was so much anger, hate and practical death threats when Polow Ding Dong made his comments. And when ya’ll find out brothers want to date only a certain type of woman (White, Asain, etc) ya’ll are ready to boycott everything they touch, sell and endorse. lol. Yet this Black girl that millions of other Black girls admire and adore literally says she wishes she was born something other than Black and a lot of yall want to overlook her comment. lol. I don’t get it. Why does she get treated differently? Why is the standard different? Is it because people think Latinos are closer to Blacks in cultural background and heritage than Whites and therefore her statement carries less weight? Dumb as hell.

Yes, this chick has the IQ of a staple but that’s no excuse. She’s been around long enough to know what she means, mean what she says and say what she means. When someone SAYS they wish they were born something else there’s a certain level of seriousness to that statement. How many of you have ever said “I wish I was born (fill in the blank)…And if you did say it, how many of you really didn’t mean it?
Beyonce has been accepted by every damn culture in the world. The girl is a mega-star. She’s crossed over so much her ass is tangled. lol. Her statement is not about getting a pass. It was a Freudian slip that was a slap to Black people. Notice how she says ‘…between speaking to all of the Latino stations and speaking to the pop stations or the “other” stations.’ What other stations could she be referring to?? Country, Alternative, Rock???? lol. She straighted up dissed yall and she’s sraight-up saying that Black people are haters and she means it. She just messed around and got that shit in print.

I have a lot of problems with Black people but I would never want to be anything other than who I am. The grass is not always greener. It just goes to show the culture we’ve become. If you’re fine (subjective) and can shake your ass, you utter words that literally translate into pure self-hate and you can get a pass. That’s why no one got on Halle for saying she wished she was all White. SMDM for real on this one.

My take on this: If you believe that this statement of hers is no big deal then you shouldn’t have had problem with Polow’s.

NEW YORK, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ — Beyonce’s “Bello Embustero (Beautiful Liar),” her duet with Shakira from “B’DAY Deluxe Edition,” picked up a Latin Grammy Record Of The Year nomination, announced Wednesday, August 29, at a press conference attended by national and international media in Miami. The 8th Annual Latin Grammy Awards — scheduled for Thursday, November 8 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas — will be broadcast live on the Univision Network from 8 - 11 p.m. ET/PT (check your local listings).

Beyonce’s Latin Grammy Record Of The Year nomination closely follows the announcement that the international superstar’s “B’DAY Deluxe Edition” had taken home Mexico’s coveted Oye! Award as “Best International Album of the Year.” The Oye! Awards ceremony was aired on Televisa, the #1 television channel in Mexico.

News of Beyonce’s Latin Grammy nomination and Best Album honors happily coincides with this week’s release of “Irreemplazable,” her new eight track Spanish language EP featuring select songs from “B’DAY.” “Irreemplazable” — a compilation of original material and tracks from “B’DAY” and “Dreamgirls” including the Spanish chart-topping “Amor Gitano” — is available now.

The original version of Beyonce’s “B’DAY” won this year’s Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album, bringing Beyonce’s lifetime Grammy total up to 10 (seven as a solo artist and three won with Destiny’s Child).

Beyonce’s Oye! winning “B’DAY Deluxe Edition” premieres, in addition to the original 12 tracks from “B’DAY,” five brand-new songs in English, the expanded album’s first single, the Latin Grammy nominated “Beautiful Liar,” a superstar duet between Beyonce and Shakira, and six new Spanish language tracks including “Amor Gitano,” Beyonce’s sensuous flamenco-pop duet with Latin Grammy-winning superstar Alejandro Fernandez. Co-written by Beyonce with Grammy-winning songwriters/recording artists Reyli Barba and Jaime Flores and produced by Grammy-winning producer Rudy Perez, “Amor Gitano” can be heard as the theme music for “Zorro: La Espada y La Rosa (The Sword and the Rose),” a telenovela (serialized television soap opera) on Telemundo (check your local listings).

The award-winning album also includes Spanish language versions of “Listen (Oye)” and “Irreplaceable (Irreemplazable)” and three new mixes of “Beautiful Liar.”

“B’DAY,” Beyonce’s second solo album, closed out 2006 as one of the year’s most successful albums. A bona fide international success, “B’DAY” has achieved platinum plus status in the United States (3x platinum), the United Kingdom (2x platinum), Australia (platinum), Canada (platinum), Japan (platinum) New Zealand (platinum), and reached #1 on the United World Chart (2x platinum).

Released around the world on September 4, 2006 (September 5 in the U.S.) to coincide with the artist’s 25th birthday, Beyonce’s “B’DAY” entered the Billboard Top 200 at #1, with first week’s sales of more than 541,000 pieces, achieving the year’s highest first week’s sales of any female recording act, group or solo, and the fifth highest chart debut of the year of any artist, male or female. (The pop superstar’s first solo album, 2003’s Grammy-winning Dangerously In Love, also debuted in the #1 slot.)

“B’DAY” peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and U.S. Internet album charts and remains a constant in the upper reaches of the Top 200.

“Deja Vu” (featuring Jay-Z), the first single from B’DAY, reached #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart and #1 on the Hot Dance Singles Sales chart while its follow-up, “Ring The Alarm,” hit #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart and #3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The album’s single, “Irreplaceable,” reached #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart (10 weeks in a row) and #1 on the R&B Singles chart (9 weeks in a row). Music World-Columbia Records

It was a dumb statement, but what else would you expect from Beyonce ?

Classic Beyonce Blonde Moment. I enjoy Beyonce as an entertainer, but Beyonce is notorious for her speaking habits, which leaving nothing to be desired. That’s why she doesn’t talk much. She is also a chameleon, who adapts to whatever she is talking about at the time.

You can enjoy a culture without wanting to BE that culture, that’s not the issue. It’s one thing to give someone a compliment, it’s another thing to indicate envy over not BEING them. That’s only ammunition for the folks (not latinos per se) that try to mimic us without BEING us. We are NOT talking about Afro Caribbeans, Afro Cubans, etc. She is NOT one of them. Period.

The issue is regardless to who and what you are, (black, white, brown, or a mixture of that), be who you are and enjoy the others along the ride.

I’m disappointed at the comment, but not surprised.

^ That’s exactly my point. Once you’ve reached a certain pinnacle in your career, you don’t need to work that much harder to gain more fans. That’s like Marilyn Manson saying Blacks are the best race on earth and all Blacks running out to buy his album. People either like you (or your music) or they don’t. Beyonce couldn’t be stupid enough to think that her saying she wishes she was born Latina means more Latin people will run out and buy her records. Even she said it in her interview: good music is good music. So if they weren’t feeling her before she made that statement, they certainly won’t feel her afterwards … unless she thinks Latinos are just as dumb as she seems. lol

That’s a damn lie. This chatroom is whack as hell. Beyonce is Black, bi-racial but Black and proud of it. I’m sure there are some Latinas who wished they looked as good as she does. She’s beautiful, black and proud and Jay-Z is her man. Step off.

When I think about other cultures that are making music for something other than their own community, I immediatly think of:
Alan Thicke, Joss Stone , Amy Winehouse, Justin Timberlake

I would imagine at some point in the entertainers that I listed above careers, that they PROBABLY made a statement saying that they honor & respect Black Music or Black Culture.

Beyonce said that she admires Latino’s/Hispanics.

Although she should NOT have said she wished she was Latino, I think that what she was trying to convey is RESPECT for their culture.

Beyonce just doesn’t know how to artuculate her thoughts properly

Wow! “B” don’t get this much attention when she does something right… I guess it’s easier to focus on the negative things about a person.. I wonder about the people who are calling her dumb, stupid and/or air head would be perfect on every interview if they were put in the same situation day in and day out. Sometimes we need to be more encouraging and stop bashing people, because truth be told if you look back at something’s you have said or tried to say and did not come out correctly you would not be so quick to judge, because we all fall short sometimes, your not exposed because your not nationally known.

Gotta chime in here and agree with some other comments here.

I think she was just trying to convey respect for the latin culture. And a lot of us here can agree that this woman-child is not the brightest apple in the basket.

She just cannot give good interview because she’s not very well educated. If Mathew was so damn saavy, he would have made sure she buckled down on her studies, even the basic shit, while he was “grooming” his fembot for fame. At this point, all I have is pity for her. Some might say why pity her, she’s rich as fuk and don’t give a damn about us, but I can help but feel sorry for somebody who probably tries REALLY hard to stop her mind from playing an endless loop of the Scarecrow’s song from The Wizard of Oz, If I Only Had A Brain .

Polow’s comments were generalizing people as a whole and was not speaking about his own preference.. “B” on the other hand is not saying all black people wish they were born Spanish… She is speaking on her own personal preference which we are entitled to, now should she have said it “NO” being who she is, however her misconstrue comments and Polow’s ridicules comments has no comparison.

#126: great post.
#232: lmao.

this just goes to show all the world that celebrities are just as normal as us regular folk. we should be very aware that beyonce isn’t the most articulate person in the world. and maybe (JUST MAYBE) this is one of the following:

1. an attempt to embrace her latin fans
2. she had a hard time articulating what she wanted to say
3. she was mis-quoted by Latina Magazine

or maybe she just wants be a dang ol’ latina! we’ve all been there where we we wished that our hair was curlier or our nose was smaller, maybe even being a different race. bashing her (completely) is just a waste of time.

@ FLY CHIC,
I’m not directly comparing Polow’s statement to hers. The gist of what I’m saying is that a lot of Black folks got up in arms over his statement about his preference and him saying Black women were raised “different.” However, some of the same people treat it as no big that Beyonce — one of the few Black people that’s internationally recognized as a sensational Black Woman — says she wishes that she was born something other than Black. Peep the irony. Which one is really more of a slap to the Black race?

I see severe ignorance in both their comments. The main comparison here is that both of these celebrities are short-sighted and made statements that are insulting to their race. However, only one is literally crucified by their own race for it. The other one was given a free ride because she is “stupid, ignorant, airheaded, inarticulate” etc.

BEYONCE AND JENNIFER LOPEZ SHOULD SWITCH PLACES. I am not the least bit surprised. Although I am so PROUD OF CL, FOR PUTTING IT OUT THERE AND COMMENTING ON BEHALF OF BEYONCITA’S STUPIDITY. Unfortunately, African American women will continue to support Beyonce, and the KNOWLES clan; buying her less than mediocre records AND house of dodo clothing line. It was clear from the get go, what Beyonce’s role in Destiny’s child was, and what her purpose in the industry is today. And that is to set the standard. Beyonce is the “new” standard for African American women. It’s bad enough that we have to battle stereotypical fabrications where education is concerned in our communities. But now we have to battle our own kind; defending our selves against racially charged insinuations about being “black” in this country. Now I’m not saying she’s the first to do it, I mean black on black hate is a part of “NEGRO” history. But it says a lot when one of the most popular female “African American” singers in the industry down plays her own culture, and expresses publically that she would have preferred being born Latina. And for those of you who are not at least, bothered or disturbed by Beyonce’s recent comments; you have another thing coming. This is exactly why the recent wave of racial slurs and insensitive comments being made toward blacks are accepted. Because we don’t appear too rattled by them. I bet no (by one I mean black) publications are going to address Beyonce, or her camp about it. They’re going to let it slide; and the people around her are going to make excuses for her actions, and the media; since its mostly geared towards white people and for white people are going to laugh it off, and feed on it. And this is going to be added to Beyonce’s collection of ridiculous things to say. Beyonce has gone untouched for too long. But I will admit that the media by enlarge are major enablers. That is why she gets away with saying such crap; she’s protected, big time. I don’t think she’s ever been confronted for any of the stunts she’s pulled. I’m glad people are staring to catch on, and are calling her out.
I put a dime on it: That she’s going to release another urban album the black community is going to buy it, and support it. SO SAD. WHY US GOD, WHY US. Way to go Beyonce, what ever keeps you on top. We are the butt of every ones jokes people. Even empty avocado brain Beyonce.

I find it so funny that the same people that support and defend her feel justified in saying that she’s really uneducated and shouldn’t be taken so seriously. So what exactly does that say about who some Blacks hold in esteem? If anyone else had come out and said that they would’ve been torn to pieces on this blog. And believe that they wouldn’t be calling themselves “haters” for not supporting that person.

Someone calls her a roboho and it’s off with their head. She says she wants to be something else and it’s blown off. This is yet another example of Blacks in denial. We stay supporting the wrong things out of fear of being called haters but never want to hold our most adored and admired stars accountable when they “F” up. This is why people like Marion Barry stay getting paid with taxpayer money.

And for the record, there was no twisting of her words in this interview. She has made it clear that she won’t do interviews unless her own recoder is on.

That’s like saying I wish I was rich are you speaking down on the less fortunate or I wish I had long hair, I wish I had a big butt, I wish I was lighter, I wish I was skinny, we all have a tendency of trying to be or have something we are not or don’t have. You know how may “black” people have said I wish I was “white” “then I would not have to be subjected to the racial profiling, being turned down because of being black, to have doors just open for them”? It’s mostly used as a figure of speech. Plastic surgery is a prime example how many black and white celebrities are doing it making their self into something they are not…. Also tanning white people wish they had skin color of Hispanic people we can go on with hair weave why can’t we be happy with our natural hair that god gave us as black people we can go on and own we are all guilty one way or the other of not being happy with who we are….

Excellent point. I feel you 100%. You would just think that with all the wealth, fame, success and notoriety she’s achieved WHILE being Black she wouldn’t have that much to complain about (like regular folks). lol. Beyonce didn’t get rich from selling only to Whites or Latins. Black people who stayed checking for her played a big role in making her who she is, whether or not she wants to believe that. She needs to be a little more grateful. Guess no matter how much some people have in this world it’s never enough though.

A few months ago, Halle Berry did a Interview in which she confessed that when she was growing up she wished that she was white, and that as an adult, she is insecure about her looks.

Quote:
April 24, 2006 Article
“Halle Berry And Her Insecurities”

“When Halle was growing up, she wished she was white so that she wouldn’t have had to struggle as hard as she did. The star has never been able to take compliments about her looks seriously. It goes to show you, no matter how beautiful you think someone is, they will always find fault in themselves.

Halle Berry used to pray she would be “cured” of being black. The stunning actress dreamed of finding a pill to turn her skin white when she was a child, according to The Sun newspaper.
The 39-year-old - who was the first black woman to win an Oscar, for her performance in Monster’s Ball - is quoted as saying: “Being a black woman I’ve struggled with that my whole life - feeling that if I changed, my life would be better.”

Meanwhile, the X-Men star has also confessed she is insecure about her stunning looks - despite being one of the most beautiful women in the world. The actress claims the fact she is frequently included on lists of the sexiest actresses doesn’t changed her mind about her appearance.

She said: “Although such things do wonders for my confidence, I’m never able to take them seriously. If they really knew me, they’d realize that I’m far from secure about my looks.”

I maintain that “hating” is when somebody got something that you wish you had and you mad at ‘em for it. Beyawnce ain’t got ISH I would trade my life for, and that’s real. A) I don’t worship money and B) I’d rather have poor wisdom than rich ignorance any day of the week. I keep reading “I mean, she didn’t say she wanted to be White” or “It ain’t like she ain’t proud to be black.” I watch what people say as well as what they DON’T say. If you hold anything that you are NOT in a higher esteem than what you ARE, that’s a problem. Moreover, why it got to be all the way bad (I wish I was White) before it becomes an issue?
This chick is role model to somebody, unfortunately, and so we can’t just gloss and glide over what she said. Okay. Chalk it up to she’s an idiot or she isn’t learned or she need a media coach. Okay. Fine. She SHOULD KNOW THIS BY NOW and the consumate professional would GET A MEDIA COACH, A BOOK and INVEST IN SOME KNOWLEDGE before letting the world get wind of how damn ignorant they are. @367 I agree with what was said. She SHOULD know this by now, but clearly she doesn’t. Yes, she does need a media coach of some sort. However, everybody is holding this against her like she’s not allowed to make mistakes. I don’t think it’s fair for people to have blown this up like it has. 350+ comments? Majority of them saying what she needs to do? This has clearly been blown out of proportion. Like I said, she was just trying to be nice and friendly, and it came out terribly wrong. Now the girl has to probably release a statement apologizing for her comment, as well she should, which will most likely then subject her to more ridicule. I’ll be glad when people stop looking up to celebrities and expecting them to behave like angels. It’s not realistic.

@371 Since WHEN?!?!?? She’s been flauting sexy since day ONE. Are we talking about the same Beyonce? Hmmmm…. okay.
—————————-
Okay, fine. I’m saying she doesn’t blatantly go “look how hot I am”. She does take sexy pictures and videos, but she’s an entertainer, it is her role. I’m saying when you see her in a DECENT interview or see her in those “out on the street/in public” pics, do you see her looking like a Paris Hilton or porn star or something? TRYING to be sexy? No, you don’t. That’s what I mean by “flaunt” it. And anyway, that’s beside the point I was trying to make. What I’m saying is the same as I said before:

“She doesn’t wish she was anyone or anything but her damn self. She made a mistake by not thinking her comment all the way through before she said it. She was just trying to be friendly and she overdid it. She’s human. Get off her nuts and give the girl a break! Dayum!”

Oh, and this too:

“Now the girl has to probably release a statement apologizing for her comment, as well she should, which will most likely then subject her to more ridicule. I’ll be glad when people stop looking up to celebrities and expecting them to behave like angels. It’s not realistic.”

So the fuck what if she sounds a little less than intelligent in the interview, she’s not a fucking rocket scientist, so she doesn’t have to sound smart, and everyone that thinks she should are just HATERS! Now fuck off you haters, fucking hater ass haters, drink some haterade bitches, hatin’ haterlicious haters!!!

lol @ 301

@ 305 um I’m close to many latinos too but I wouldn’t dare say what she did….I feel very much apart of my Cuban friend’s family….sh-t I almost married her brother. But I’ve never said damn I’m jealous of ya’ll I wanna be Cuban or Latino….cut the crap. You think the hispanic community sticks together all the time…..there are just as much issues in the hispanic culture and division there just like the black American communities….it’s not like it’s all love over there either come on. I have good “faith” most of us wouldn’t have said anything that um….not smart.

Yells @ 319………..TELL IT TELL IT GOTDAMNIT TELL IT! lol And again @ 344 *gives applause*

Nods @ 355 in agreeacne

@ La Negra um ….. girl do not even get it twisted…….HATE ON WHAT….how dumb and ignorant her comment was YEAH MAYBE. You’re half black and Spanish that’s great. See this is what I mean this gives some hispanic people more reason to think they are the best things walking and that Beyonce’ didn’t help because I mean see she wants to be one (Latina). How the heck can you even say that NO ONE hates ya’ll as much as blacks…..you’re mind is all messed up because YOU know who hates US (black American AND latinos) more here in this country?! White people…..get it right NENA. I don’t know any blacks (including myself) hating on latinos…..and what in your opinion are black people hating on. You’re half black American so………..is your black American family hating on your latino side of the family? I couldn’t care if she wanted to be Latina (she didn’t say Spanish….Spanish people are from Spain)….but her statement was nothing short of real ignorant.

As far as Im concerned….B Knowles has been a poor example of what the Woman and more importantly what the BLACK woman represents for sometime now. With every revealing piece of clothing she wears or EVERY time she shakes her ass for cash, she compromises her religon and christianity…so it is NO SURPRISE that she has compromised her race….

its the most tragic thing Ive EVER encountered..

WoW!! The only people that are STUPID are the people leaving these dumb a** comments hating on B. That was her point…. The Latino culture is totally different. There is far more LOVE and a lot less HATE and she simply pointed that fact out. I wish WE had more love in our culture too so I don’t have to sit and read dumb sh*t like this when a sister was being empathetic to another culture. We could probably learn something from other cultures if we took the time to observe. Black people are wonderful, and our struggle alone proves that. But WE sure don’t have it all together and a culture that has men RESPECTING their woman and FAMILY values being of high importance, makes me a little jealous I’m not a part of that, as well. Instead of being defensive–just look around– it obvious.

You people keep on saying Beyonce was ass kissing when I really think she was disrespecting her own race. She loves the Latina culture and like I’ve said before on this blog, we blacks do not have our black culture anymore! Especially African Americans. Black men always think Latina women are beautiful and sexy and think black women are ghetto, dark skinned, fat, sloppy, and ghetto! It’s a damn shame. Beyonce is just fake and tries to appeal to her own audience by having catchy ghetto lyrics when she know damn well she don’t know anything about being ghetto.

She’s always appealed to the white audience because she has light skin and fake ass long blond weave. She sometimes looks like she’s half white. I’m was offended by this comment because it’s a shame that she didn’t go to a different country talking about how proud she is to be a black or African American woman succeeding worldwide. ON MTV Tres when they asked her how she felt about being a non-latina on the cove rof some magazine, she kept saying that it was good to cover a magazine being a NON LATINA! She should’ve said I’m proud to be the first A.American women on this magazine and representing for my people. latina’s say that shit over here all the time.

First and foremost, Cha Cha, Salsa, and Rhumba have Afro Cuban roots. Samba has African roots that came to Brazil by way of the African descendents there. So there is an very strong African influence dominating much of the Latino music industry even to this day. We as Black Americans need to watch less TV and read more on our world history so messages from the media cannot catch us off guard. We need to know where we as African descendents have roots, power, and influence so we can build on that. We especially need to greatly esteem our Black Inventors, Doctors, Certified Public Accountants, Entrepreneurs, etc. We esteem our Entertainers more than other successful Black men and women who are highly educated with degrees. We need to value a college education more so for reasons such as these. Education is vital, not optional.

You know I was just thinking about the Dixie Chicks and how, after they made those comments about being ashamed of our President, people stopped buying their records. Sure, they had a comeback and won 5 Grammy awards and they should have, their expressed opinion was of a political nature, it was about human lives and therefore meaningful BUT I’ll be curious to see how offended some of you are. Hey, I’m not throwing darts, I wasn’t offended because I know that 1. she’s an idiot and 2. she’s an capitalist. Beyonce was just being honest with herself. She has great taste! Can’t blame her. Hell she looks Latina already. Why my people do you think she is so popular. Do you think she would be as popular if she looked like that fat hog Jennifer Hudson or Fantasia? Hell no!!!!

You guys are some of the most ignorant people. I am going to need you guys to know that she’s NOT dissing her race!

There are such things as Black Latinas!

Latina does NOT = non black, non white, or non…whatever else.

There are a many mixture of different races in these Latin American countries i.e. (Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, etc..) There are Blacks, whites, mulattoes, even Asians JUST LIKE HERE IN AMERICA! You guys seem to be oblivious to the fact. These countries are not bound to just ONE RACE you dumb asses!

Just like there are Black AMERICANS, there are Black PUERTO RICANS, Black BRAZILIANS, Black Dominicans, even Black MEXICANS and so on and so forth…

You think Black people only hit North America, Jamaica, and Haiti?

Read a book niggas!

Hell, if you are more than 16 years of age and you haven’t experienced a bit of a culture shock especially THIS DAY AND AGE WHEN ITS ENCOURAGED?!, Then You’re just an uneducated, narrow minded, dumb ass Muhfonka!

Its not like she’s saying “I wish I wasn’t Black.” Its more like saying I wish I was born a Dominican, Honduran, Brazilian etc… rather than an “American.” get it? She’s talking “culturally”. Culturally yes, Latin cultures seem to be more loving and open. They don’t look at race as much as we do here. Americans only seem to tear each other apart!

That’s whats wrong with The States…too segregated!

well yeah its obvious that shes going through something deep, but no one should put her down cuz shes the product of the most deadly poison thats affecting the black communtiy, which is colorism. Really Beyonce naturally is proud to be black and has spent half of her life trying to be accepted by the black community or valued and shes constantly underated. and think about the experiences shes had dealt with black women, im a light skinned woman who looks like a cross between ashanti n bey and from ecperience ive been treated horrible for no reason by black woman no offense but they can be harsh now thats doesnt mean disown your race but why would she wanna consider herself a black woman when everything shes remembered since childhood bein associated with bein black, or a black women has caused her to represent something that she doesnt want embodied in her image. latinas seem to more elegant and sensual, and come off strong and bold without being hateful and maybe this is how she sees them. Who knows, maybe shes attracted to them lol! my point is i dont think she feels supported by the black community. i feel the same black folks can be so harsh and coldblooded to fair skinned people cuz they think we got it easy or think we better. we dont think we betta cuz we look good we jus see how ugly black people are inside and so who would be proud of that ?? yeah black folks are gorgeous but they are all f*cked up
