Friday, September 14, 2007

samata.jpg
( Samata Angel (R) & model on the runway )

Some of you may remember our first ever Designer’s Spotlight post featuring the talented Samata Angel. As we mentioned in the spotlight post, Samata was the first black British female designer to be featured this week during Nolcha Fashion Week.

The Samata’s Muse collection was a big hit at the event and she was even interviewed by Vogue Magazine about it. That’s big! You can check out a few shots from her debut at Nolcha Fashion Week after the cut. CONGRATS SAMATA!!

SAMATA & FRIENDS AT THE AFTER PARTY

Also, if you can, make sure you vote for her in the UK Urban Fashion Awards. She is up for the Best Women’s Wear Designer award.

Love it all. White dres is lovely - floaty and yeah does kind of look like a sheet! Lol! She is talented however you look at it. She is doing it big here in London.

I understand why she doesnt look African through - especially in the last picture - she looks more Indian-Black to me but African are stunning and she proves that much.

Let’s try to support one of our own! I just voted!

The clothes are alright, nothing I haven’t seen any other underground designer do (why all the clubwear? I have yet to see an indie designer bridge the gap between either doing bridal-/evening-wear or doing casual/clubwear), but there aren’t too many black people making waves in the fashion industry that are non-singers/entertainers.

I think it is good to have your eggs in more than one basket to be honest. I don’t know too much about fashion but I would wear all this stuff either out, to the office or shopping. Can’t be bad right? Big up Samata. Love her in the blue dress - dazzling smile ma’!

Its so sad that if a black woman is pretty her beauty is attributed to some other ethnicity. If you knew anything about WAfrica you would know where she came from immediately from her face and body.

She is really beautiful, to me she is a typical Ghanaian in that sense - they are really pretty generally with great shapes. I live in London tho and don’t see many like her so not sure about what ofcourse says….you tend to see more Nigerians and Somalians than Ghanaians.

Either way - much support Samata - doing Ghanaians proud ma! KEEP IT UP!!!!

Respect to those people who can recognise another human beings efforts to make something of themselves and congratulate them for that. God gives us all talents and Samata is clearly using hers. That young lady is beautiful and looks like she has natural grace as well.

It is slightly disheartening to see that some people have to hate on a person because they don’t fit whatever image they are expected to portray. Comments about youthful appearance for example are just non starters - presumably the originator of that comment has looked like a grown man or woman from the moment he or she grew out of nappies! If she looks young, I would respectfully suggest that is a good thing. When she approaches the dangerous ages at which most people consider killing themselves/hiding away from society/plastic surgery because of the plainly visible effects of ageing, she will still look great.

Also commenting that the black people are cheering more than others and must be her family is foolhardy (although I appreciate that it was meant as a joke). I have seen images of her family, and that is not them. For one, the black people are cheering no more than everyone else (although we are as a people known for our vibrance and due to our skin coloour our teeth sometimes do appear more prominent thank God) and secondly what is wrong with black people being in the front row because they just have front row seats? I think she is doing fantastically well. She clearly is advancing in her career and we as her people should support her (as the vast majority of commentators have done here) and stop trying to tear her down as we do all our successful icons.

Congratulations to you Samata. I will certainly be buying your clothes and supporting your ventures, wherever thay may take you. (We all have the right to branch out into whatever arena we wish, some are just better at it than others) I am tempted to sign off ‘your biggest fan, this is Stan’ but I shall refrain.

A fellow proud African will have to suffice
