Who are the Jena Six?
The Jena Six are a group of black students who are being charged with attempted murder for beating up a white student who was taunting them with racial slurs. A series of white-on-black incidents of violence happened before the final incident took place, but the black students are taking all the blame.
If you haven’t heard the full story on this blatant act of racism, you need to get updated now. Click here for the time line and here for our first post on this issue.
the latest info with the case:
On September 20th Mychal Bell, one of the black teenagers awaiting sentencing in the Jena 6 Case will be appearing before a judge in a Louisiana court house. Bell could receive up to 22 years in prison for what amounted to nothing more then a fist fight between black and white high school students.
Michael will need all the support he can, so please check out the links below for more information.

I HAVE NO WORDS, I’M JUST SPEECHLESS…
That’s a result of white supremacy
CNN is finally covering this, it will be on tonight at 8.
Sadly enough I don’t think I’ll live to see true justice anytime in my lifetime & I’m only 23…I pray for the families of these young men/women b/c I know this is a trying time!
Thanks Heven…I was wondering when it would finally hit NATIONAL coverage.
Pray for those boys.
For a fistfight…the normal punishment is detention….or suspension…..or the parents of the involved can press charges…..but life in jail…….it makes me sad to see how far we have to go in this country………May God please guide and protect 8these six VICTIMS and their families!
Matter fact God Bless all my bloggers this afternoon! We need to stick together!
That is really really sad…I’m going through acts of discrimination right now in South Florida….guys pray for me as I try to find justice…
Words can even express how I feel about this. How does a simple fist fight turn into attempted murder? I’m speechless, this here shows you in plain site that racism is still alive and kicking. This is the type of shit that pisses me off and we steady get asked the same the. Why is it African Americans are always so angry, maybe its bc of ignorant shit like this.
I believe that the external pressure from the major networks may help. Hope so.
Blacks and Whites are suprised and appalled by this.
Some judges/juries are the worst people you can ever come across. Why in the hell we have racist ones? We built American and yet we have to go through this shit again.
Lawd I know it aint the right way to be but this shit be havin me ready to punch the nearest white person in the face. lol I’m sorry but you know ya’ll were thinkin it too.
I wish I could join the rally, I would love to participate. I will pray for these young men, unfortunately these kinds of injustices are occuring everyday.
*SMH* This shit truly blows my mind…..If we allow this to happen, we will continue to be denied, dismissed and eliminated as a black race. I think our children have become throwaways in the “American Dream”….more of a nightmare. We have to pick up where all of the people who died to stop this kind of hatred against people of color. Lets help each other and not JUST sign petitions, but truly help, because no matter the socioeconomics of Black peope in America, this could happen to anyone of us.
***IF YOU NEVER STAND FOR SOMETHING YOU WILL NEVER HAVE ANYTHING***
This whole thing is bullshit. A fist fight =attempted murder? Where is the justice?
Now see instead of flapping their gums about Michael Vick, this is what Stephon Marbury, the NAACP and Jamie Foxx need to be vocal about!
I have not heard a gotdamn thing about this case or this issue other then on conreteloop.com WHERE THE FUCK IS AL SHARPTON WHEN YOU NEED HIM FOREAL. WHERE IS HE.
WHY IS HE NOT ALL OVER THIS SHIT.
you know this is a damn shame
Thats why we have to keep our heads up and remain powerful from within…21st century and we’re still dealing with this bullshit
So now we continue to have racism and our president has been on vacation for the past 8 years great!
i’ve signed each petition, but sadly won’t make it to the rally. I heard Steve Harvey is on board as well. It would be nice for all the major black radio talents to get together for this one!!
I bet ya’ll now good ole Al “Extortionist” Sharpton will jump all over this..the media is finally paying notice meanwhile Mr. Sharpton has been silent except for blasting rap music..hipocrites we call leaders..Join the “F*%k Al Sharpton” Movement..lets demand real leaders and not false preachers.
http://thepermedpimpsharpton.blogspot.com/
This is so sickening. And we have black celebrities running around rapping about cars and money when they could be bringing attention to the injustice of this entire situation. We have to support our own when stuff like this goes down, those judges and officials don’t care anything about throwing away the lives of black youth! This is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of and I’m waiting for justice and common sense to kick in.
I DONT KNOW WHATS WORSE, THE FACT THAT THIS SHIT HAPPENS IN THE NEW MILLENIUM OR THAT I PASSED THIS “JENA6″ TTITLE FOR WEEKS NOW AND NEVER BOTHERED TO READ ABOUT IT… NEEDLESS TO SAY IVE READ AND SIGNED THE PETITION AND I HAVE CONTACTED SOME OTHER TO MAKE SURE THEY DO THE SAME…
THAT IS SAD REALLY SAD JUST AMAZES ME WHAT PEOPLE HAVE TO GO THROUGH EVERDAY JUST SAD
THIS IS TRULY SAD…I JUST RECENTLY STARTED READIN UP ON THIS A FEW WEEKS AGO…
BUT @ #12…..DONT TAKE UR ANGER OUT ON ALL WHITES JUS BECAUSE OF THIS….THATS THE PROBLEM NOW A DAYS…EVERYONE THINKS THAT IF ONE WHITE OR ONE BLACK PERSON DOES SOMETHIN..THAT EVERY BLACK OR WHITE PERSON IS JUS LIKE THEM..
BUT THASS NOT TRUE AT ALL….AN THATS WHERE THE PROBLEM LIES…SO MANY HYPOCRITES AN ASSUMPTIONS ARE MADE AN NONE ARE FACT.
The young man life could be taken away for a fight that is sad a shame.
WHAT A TRAGEDY AND AN ABSOLUTE SHAME ON THE US JUSTICE SYSTEM….WAIT….THERE ISN’T A JUSTICE SYSTEM IF YOU’RE BLACK IN THIS COUNTRY! THIS IS 2007 AND WE ARE STILL FACING BREACHES OF OUR CIVIL LIBERTIES AND FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS. THIS A HUGE MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTCE.
WHITE PEOPLE COMMITTING THE SAME OFFENCE ARE LET OFF WITH A LENIENT SENTENCE, WHEREAS BLACK FOLKS DID EXACTLY THE SAME THING AND ARE GETTING CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER!! SMH.
THERE IS NO JUSTICE IN THIS WORLD. DISCRIMINATION AND INEQUALITY STILL RUN RAMPANT. POLICE AND COURT SYSTEMS USE RACIAL PROFILING TO LEAVE BLACK PEOPLE DISADVANTAGED. IT IS NOT JUST IN AMERICA BUT IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES LIKE THE UK.
I saw the story this morning on CNN
Working in law enforcement, I see things like this all of the time. There were a series of figts and from my understanding the fights were one on one. This does not even justify a lynching charge. It takes two people to engage in a fight. If they are going to charge one, they need to charge them all with the same thing.
Not a huge Al Sharpton fan but he has been making noise about this situation. I was surprised to hear him speak about this – so we all may not love him but he has been active! My prayers go out to all the families involved. I have the pleasure of raising 3 young black men. The oldest is 14 and we continually tell him that the same rules don’t apply to all so before you make a decision know the possible outcome for you as a black man! Bless.
Al Sharpton might get involved if either a celebrity jumps in on this or if they’re giving away free ‘touch-ups’ at the Jena 6 rally.
Al needs to pick better battles. I feel so sorry for those kids down there.
Wow!!! And it’s 2007, right?
I was just reading an article about Richard Gere. He is an avid supporter of human rights and constantly uses his celebrity status to speak out about injustices. He recently asked for the Beijing Summer Olympics to be boycotted because of China’s human rights violations in Tibet.
I said all that to say this, where are our black celebrities like Danny Glover, Harry Belefonte. I’m always hearing about Mr. Glover and Mr. Belafonte protesting in Venezuela with Chavez against Bush and the US Government, but where do they stand on this issue? And I’m not coming down on either one of them.
And even other black celebs like Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, etc. Oprah could probably do more for this situation than anybody by just doing a story about it. I know we have organizations like the NAACP, SCLC, the Action Network, etc. But the truth is, celebs often have WAY more influence over people than our so-called “civil rights” leaders.
I mean, I know these people have other things to do and they can’t speak out on every issue, but when does an issue become important enough that they will use their powerful voices to say, “ENOUGH”!!!
For those who are unaware, Sharpton has made “a little” noise about this along with Martin III at the townhall meeting on 08/14. Please read.
JENA, La. (FinalCall.com) – On Aug. 14, Reverend Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III hosted a community town hall meeting at Antioch Baptist Church to address the unjust charges made against the six young Black males known as the “Jena 6.”
Former Jena High School football star Mychal Bell, the first to be convicted received an inspirational visit earlier that day from the two national leaders along with Houston Millions More Movement Minister of Justice Deric Muhammad at the LaSalle Parish Courthouse Jail.
“Whether you know it or not, you are making history so keep your head [up],” stated Min. Muhammad to Mychal as they embraced one another. “The only time you should drop your head is to pray. We won’t stop until those shackles are removed from your hands and feet. I know it gets discouraging and that you may want to do the normal things that teenagers do but God did not choose you to be normal.”
Martin Luther King III said to Bell, “You are a fine young man and I intend to keep pushing until justice is served.” He also shared words from his legendary father who said that “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere.”
“I told you I would be back didn’t I?” said Rev. Sharpton to the young man. Sharpton previously visited the 17-year-old on Aug. 5 before speaking to a packed audience at Trout Creek Baptist Church during their service.
A crowded congregation of predominately Blacks, jammed Antioch Baptist Church for the town hall meeting hosted by Rev. Sharpton and Mr. King. The five members of the Jena 6 that have not been convicted were in attendance ans seated on the front row, however they made no statements. Instead, the national leaders delivered brief speeches, the attorneys spoke on the facts of the case to dispel rumors and Jena residents were given the opportunity to voice their opinions, ask questions and make suggestions on how the cases should be handled.
Rev. Sharpton chided locals who have not stood for the Jena 6. “If you scared, say you scared!”. His message to others was that “it’s easy to keep Sharpton out of Jena—just give justice to the Jena Six.”
“I’m saddened to have to come to Jena in 2007. We still have struggles to fight,” expressed Mr. King. “I came to primarily listen and learn from the community.” He also made a public commitment to continue making visits to Jena until justice is served for all six young men.
Min. Muhammad, along with the many in attendance, went to embrace and give encouraging words to Robert, Carwin, Bryant, Theo and Jesse at the conclusion of the dialogue.
The townhall meeting was the latest in a string of demonstrations and meetings that have taken place in the call for justice for the Jena Six. A month ago, the Department of Justice and the FBI hosted a forum at Jena High School, but the outcome was not in favor of the young men.
“They [the Justice Department and the FBI] justified everything that the District Attorney has been done to my son and the other boys,” stated Mr. Jones to The Final Call. “They are standing behind this injustice but we will not stop fighting. It’s hard to keep hope but I am continuing to pray.” Mr. Jones also stated that Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco has refused to intervene in the case.
I will keep them in my prayers…everyone please sign the petition and pass the word onto friends, coworkers, schoolmates, and whoever has access to a computer to sign these petitions!!!
Don’t talk about how sad the situation is if you aren’t going to do anything to improve it…just think what if these were your family members or your children. Please pass the word to others….
I hope the young men come out of this fine thanks to all the black people who’ve made the issue public.
Blacks are always crying racism. There is no need for this. STAY AWAY THEN!! Why would you want to be somewhere you are not wanted. You come here with your ignorance and laziness and expect people to not say anything or treat you different. I agree it’s hard to be black and make it but just because it’s hard doesn’t mean you can’t make it. It’s hard for mexicans and they make it and they are not legal citizens. They work harder to make it so they are more accepted. look in black neighborhoods, they can’t even take care of their own neighborhoods. THey just damage it , throw garbage all over, write on buildings..ect. The stores in the neighborhoods are not owned by whites but by another minority and they make it. WHy don’t blacks stand up and run businesses in their own neighborhoods?? not because they are black?
When it comes to a black person they try to throw the book at them.
But it comes to a white person they get off with little to nothing.
Where is the JUSTICE!
Ok. I was going to ignore this, but I can’t today:
@Jess: I know you are either somebody’s 12 year old child who got to stay at home from school today and your mama doesn’t know you are playing on the computer OR you are some mentally disabled person who got to use the computer today because you took your meds like a good patient.
Either way, we are having an intelligent, adult conversation about this issue. If you don’t like what is being said, take your own advice: “STAY AWAY THEN”!!!
I have been following this for the last month or so now, and it really bothers me that it has taken this long for it to get anytype of national coverage. Al Sharpton has been down there a few times, but I also feel as though being this is our young men/women whom are involved in this I think that some of these supposed young Hip Hop stars i.e. Fiddy/T.i (love him by the way)or hell even LL old butt should rally for these young men as well. I don’t understand how in 2007 a tennis shoe can be considered a weapon, and is justifiable means for someone (A BLACK YOUNG MAN) to have their life stripped away from them. Come on people it’s apparently past time to WAKE UP!
Alright now where is that FAT FU#K that swear he is the next savior, this is a time for him and YOU GET A CAR to but their mouths to use all talking mess about hiphop and David Banner???? I really hope we stand as one on this I hope it won’t be Just Talk this time this is crazy!
I heard about this case a few months back and then yesterday on CNN; what kind of a place has a “White Tree” where you have to be a White student to hover around? Is this 2007 or 1937??? Seriously, this is one of the most horrible stories about race relations I’ve heard in years. I’d like to know more about this town. Is there anyone on this site who is familiar about this town or lives near it or in it? Is this town the headquarters for the KKK? I didn’t think this kind of injustice takes place anymore but I guess I’m wrong.
@ JESS maybe you haven’t noticed the general consensus being that we are trying to uplift and have an adult conversation about something that is really affecting “our”youth of today. Just like CDNYC said please take your own advice……………….
this is ridiculous that this is going on in the state of Louisiana (where I’m from)..i hope those white people (KKK) don’t burn down houses or try to kill these people cause it made national coverage..Those white people are probably burnt up or having secret meetings right now of..i hope they take this to supreme court and not just in Louisiana..this is waay past crazy..
okay, prayer changes things true enough…but the Lord aslos expects us to help ourselves, not in a violent way either. for as much as we all blog about unimportant things we all need to write our congressman and contact the local DA office and positively pressure the medica outlets in regards to this story. AKA/DELTA ladies and the like need to stand up and ACT this is beyond ridiculous. I live in the Midwest, I’m gonna try to contact John Conyers to do my part!
Everyone is yelling AL,, where is AL,, where is David Banner? Nelly, LL, DMX, and the list goes on.
okay WTF a JESS go play in traffic…..you are way off base. Mexicans? another time another place…it ain’t okay to be illegal
Oh, yes, and Jess #37; I don’t know what color you are: black, white, yellow or striped but you’re an idiot. Your comments have nothing to do with the Jena 6 post, okay? Do us a favor and only use your computer to play video games because you had nothing intelligent to add to this post. Typical ignorant fool.
lol at no. 14, the saying is actually if u stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything, but no worries, i get the point, and i agree with wat jess is saying, he/she has a good point
now heres wat am saying and i know am gonna hurt ya’ll felings but the truth is, if indeed they did kill that white person then they are going to the slummer and sadly, rightly so, i dont care how many racial slurs are thrown at you, at the end of the day those are just words and u should be smart enough to realise their ignorance and big enough to ignore it, nothing in this world can justify killing someone, nothing, i would support them if they had beaten him to a pulp but taking his life is just not exceptable
Has anyone heard Tavis Smiley say anything about this? Where’s Al, Jesse, pastors or actors/actresses that protest about social injustices in other countries? Will Oprah do a show on this like she did the Rutger Women’s Basketball Team? This is happening in our own backyard and it’s barely getting 2 1/2 minutes of airplay on national news stations, and local stations is a joke. My prayers is with all the families involved. I stress that everyone keeps informing those around you on this disgraceful situation b/c it needs to be stopped.
Um, JESS, if ignorance is bliss, then your brain matter must be floating in a perpetual fog mass. That’s all I’m going to say to that.
AS FOR THE JENA 6, I’LL ECHO WHAT WAS ALREADY SAID HERE – WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU:
OPRAH
SHARPTON ( A STRONGER RESPONSE, PLEASE. WHY DIDN’T YOU INVITE THAT RACIST D.A. ON YOUR SHOW FOR SOME GOOD OLD FASHIONED ASS-FRYING LIKE YOU HAD IMUS)
WILL SMITH
JAMIE FOXX (TAKE YOUR HEAD OUT YOUR ASS FIRST, THOUGH)
JESSE JACKSON
TOM JOYNER
TAVIS SMALLEY
ANY DUMB ASS-BLING-LOVING-FAKE-ASS-FEUDIN’ FOR SALES-RAPPER (THAT INCLUDES YOUR “WHITE PARTY”-ASS HAVING DIDDY. YOU COULDA DRAWN SOME ATTENTION TO SOME REAL ISSUES THIS PAST LABOR DAY. YOU TOO, RUSS SIMMONS. YOUR BOURGIE-VEGAN ASS WAS DOING YOGA MOVES (?!) WITH PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE EDWARDS WHILE SIX BLACK VICTIMS LANGUISHED IN A CELL. AFTER Y’ALL GOT ALL OMMMMM AND SHYT, DID YOU BRING THIS UP?!
IF ANY OF YOU HAVE LINKS TO ANY RESPONSES BY THE AFOREMENTIONED, PLEASE POST.
WHERE IS THE PUBLIC RIGHTEOUS ANGER? WHAT THE FUK IS WRONG WITH US?
DAMN, I’M PISSED!
WHAT CAN I DO? ARE THERE ANY DONATION EMAIL ADDRESSES? I’M SO BLINDED RIGHT NOW, I THINK I MISSED THE LINK TO SIGN THE PETITION.
ps: i agree wit the blacks are keeping themselves down bit, not wit the stupid “stay away then” bullshit
I personally appreciate “Jess’s” honesty. I sincerely think that black people need to acknowledge that there are tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions, of white people in America that feel exactly the same way that “Jess” does. That’s black people’s number one problem, and it’s why our children and grandchildren will have to deal with the same bias, racism, denigration, hate, and stereotype. Black people want to be friends with their enemies and enemies with their brothers and sisters. Black people are like children, they fear that honesty and rejection from the caucasian. The anger that black people have when something like this happens is not indignation, it’s like a spurned lover. This is why; in my opinion, the other races always have something derogatory to say concerning blacks and never, sincerely, feel any empathy for blacks’ plight. Not that they’re supposed to. That’s why I commended “Jess” for saying how “Jess” feels, lol. I have far more respect for that than some white boy that loves rap saying some disingenuous shit like, “I really fuckin’ wish we could all just come together…”. Then as soon as he gets his first job at the firm and matures out of his wigger phase he fulfills his destiny, lol.
Then black people are not consistent. Most of you will come back on another post and say the exact opposite of what you’ve said here. Whatever man. I hope the brothers can emerge from this ordeal, for their sake. It just seems like a very strange mode of thinking black people have.
angela,
read about the Jenna 6 case before you go cosigning anything because you obviously aren’t up on the facts…..nobody was killed!
Judah..save that for another post, right now it needs to be about working to help these young men from becoming another Genarlow Wilson
oh wait a minute, was that attempted murder, my bad, i thought i’d heard that they had actually killed him, well in that case its a different story and no they dont deserve to go to prison, and if its a judge with any brains then they wont be sent their, my prayers are with them
But then again, why am I asking for rappers to step in? They only gives a fuk about themselves.
The only time they organize is when they feel like their so-called First Amendment rights are being threatened. You know, the right to tell a female to suk his gat, and swallow the bullet blast, you know, crucial art type shyt.
Granted the charges are excessive and more than likely 5 of the “Jena 6″ will get off with a slap in the wrist. The judge is actually working with the Jenna 6 but the press around the incident should shed light on the DA’s unwillingness to act when the “nooses” were initially hung. A clear hate crime. His career is pretty much over.
As for Mychal Bell, his ass is toast. With four juvenile offenses (two for simple battery) he’s a lost cause. Given his record he would have ended up in jail anyway. I wouldn’t waste time defending this knuckle-head.
36. JESS

Each person is entitled to his or her own opinion but we all know this character is TRYING TO START CONFLICT up in here. We are all above that so please IGNORE this character…IT IS SO OVBIOUS he/she is searching for some attention. LOL.
Jess, I have news for you. The only people in my community that are defacing things and destroying things are mexican. Graffitti is ya’lls thing, right? I own and operate my own business so don’t talk that bullshit here. This case is clearly motivated by race so of course we are discussing racism. You seem like a complete idiot coming in here talking that mess. What do you own? what are you doing to improve your community and what are you doing here posing among the rest of us? Maybe you don’t understand the issue since your race has not been enslaved, maybe you don’t understand the gravity of a symbol such as a noose. How about this? Get off of this board, let us worry about our own and you go and fight for what your people are fighting for, like the right to vote and recieve benefits even though a lot of them are over here illegally. It’s riduculous for you to stand against the minority community when the majority of the people on this board are black!
ANGEL
I’m confused:
First-off, I’ll admit I knew very little about this until today. In the post headline, you refer to an incident where this amounted to nothing but a fist-fight.
Now I’m hearing it’s attempted murder. Or somebody was killed.
What up?
