I saw the story this morning on CNN

Working in law enforcement, I see things like this all of the time. There were a series of figts and from my understanding the fights were one on one. This does not even justify a lynching charge. It takes two people to engage in a fight. If they are going to charge one, they need to charge them all with the same thing.

Not a huge Al Sharpton fan but he has been making noise about this situation. I was surprised to hear him speak about this - so we all may not love him but he has been active! My prayers go out to all the families involved. I have the pleasure of raising 3 young black men. The oldest is 14 and we continually tell him that the same rules don’t apply to all so before you make a decision know the possible outcome for you as a black man! Bless.

Al Sharpton might get involved if either a celebrity jumps in on this or if they’re giving away free ‘touch-ups’ at the Jena 6 rally.

I was just reading an article about Richard Gere. He is an avid supporter of human rights and constantly uses his celebrity status to speak out about injustices. He recently asked for the Beijing Summer Olympics to be boycotted because of China’s human rights violations in Tibet.

I said all that to say this, where are our black celebrities like Danny Glover, Harry Belefonte. I’m always hearing about Mr. Glover and Mr. Belafonte protesting in Venezuela with Chavez against Bush and the US Government, but where do they stand on this issue? And I’m not coming down on either one of them.

And even other black celebs like Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, etc. Oprah could probably do more for this situation than anybody by just doing a story about it. I know we have organizations like the NAACP, SCLC, the Action Network, etc. But the truth is, celebs often have WAY more influence over people than our so-called “civil rights” leaders.

I mean, I know these people have other things to do and they can’t speak out on every issue, but when does an issue become important enough that they will use their powerful voices to say, “ENOUGH”!!!

For those who are unaware, Sharpton has made “a little” noise about this along with Martin III at the townhall meeting on 08/14. Please read.

JENA, La. (FinalCall.com) - On Aug. 14, Reverend Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III hosted a community town hall meeting at Antioch Baptist Church to address the unjust charges made against the six young Black males known as the “Jena 6.”

Former Jena High School football star Mychal Bell, the first to be convicted received an inspirational visit earlier that day from the two national leaders along with Houston Millions More Movement Minister of Justice Deric Muhammad at the LaSalle Parish Courthouse Jail.

“Whether you know it or not, you are making history so keep your head [up],” stated Min. Muhammad to Mychal as they embraced one another. “The only time you should drop your head is to pray. We won’t stop until those shackles are removed from your hands and feet. I know it gets discouraging and that you may want to do the normal things that teenagers do but God did not choose you to be normal.”

Martin Luther King III said to Bell, “You are a fine young man and I intend to keep pushing until justice is served.” He also shared words from his legendary father who said that “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere.”

“I told you I would be back didn’t I?” said Rev. Sharpton to the young man. Sharpton previously visited the 17-year-old on Aug. 5 before speaking to a packed audience at Trout Creek Baptist Church during their service.

A crowded congregation of predominately Blacks, jammed Antioch Baptist Church for the town hall meeting hosted by Rev. Sharpton and Mr. King. The five members of the Jena 6 that have not been convicted were in attendance ans seated on the front row, however they made no statements. Instead, the national leaders delivered brief speeches, the attorneys spoke on the facts of the case to dispel rumors and Jena residents were given the opportunity to voice their opinions, ask questions and make suggestions on how the cases should be handled.

Rev. Sharpton chided locals who have not stood for the Jena 6. “If you scared, say you scared!”. His message to others was that “it’s easy to keep Sharpton out of Jena—just give justice to the Jena Six.”

“I’m saddened to have to come to Jena in 2007. We still have struggles to fight,” expressed Mr. King. “I came to primarily listen and learn from the community.” He also made a public commitment to continue making visits to Jena until justice is served for all six young men.

Min. Muhammad, along with the many in attendance, went to embrace and give encouraging words to Robert, Carwin, Bryant, Theo and Jesse at the conclusion of the dialogue.

The townhall meeting was the latest in a string of demonstrations and meetings that have taken place in the call for justice for the Jena Six. A month ago, the Department of Justice and the FBI hosted a forum at Jena High School, but the outcome was not in favor of the young men.

“They [the Justice Department and the FBI] justified everything that the District Attorney has been done to my son and the other boys,” stated Mr. Jones to The Final Call. “They are standing behind this injustice but we will not stop fighting. It’s hard to keep hope but I am continuing to pray.” Mr. Jones also stated that Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco has refused to intervene in the case.

I will keep them in my prayers…everyone please sign the petition and pass the word onto friends, coworkers, schoolmates, and whoever has access to a computer to sign these petitions!!!

Don’t talk about how sad the situation is if you aren’t going to do anything to improve it…just think what if these were your family members or your children. Please pass the word to others….

WHy don’t blacks stand up and run businesses in their own neighborhoods?? not because they are black?

I have been following this for the last month or so now, and it really bothers me that it has taken this long for it to get anytype of national coverage. Al Sharpton has been down there a few times, but I also feel as though being this is our young men/women whom are involved in this I think that some of these supposed young Hip Hop stars i.e. Fiddy/T.i (love him by the way)or hell even LL old butt should rally for these young men as well. I heard about this case a few months back and then yesterday on CNN; what kind of a place has a “White Tree” where you have to be a White student to hover around? Is this 2007 or 1937??? Seriously, this is one of the most horrible stories about race relations I’ve heard in years. I’d like to know more about this town. Is there anyone on this site who is familiar about this town or lives near it or in it? Is this town the headquarters for the KKK? I didn’t think this kind of injustice takes place anymore but I guess I’m wrong.

I personally appreciate “Jess’s” honesty. I sincerely think that black people need to acknowledge that there are tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions, of white people in America that feel exactly the same way that “Jess” does. That’s black people’s number one problem, and it’s why our children and grandchildren will have to deal with the same bias, racism, denigration, hate, and stereotype. Black people want to be friends with their enemies and enemies with their brothers and sisters. Black people are like children, they fear that honesty and rejection from the caucasian. The judge is actually working with the Jenna 6 but the press around the incident should shed light on the DA’s unwillingness to act when the “nooses” were initially hung. A clear hate crime. As for Mychal Bell, his ass is toast. With four juvenile offenses (two for simple battery) he’s a lost cause. Given his record he would have ended up in jail anyway. I wouldn’t waste time defending this knuckle-head.

What blows my mind is how people complain about situations like this but yet do absolutely nothing to help or change the situation. Like a few said before, sign the petition, write letters to your local governor and major and spread the word. The white kid who got beat up attended a school function the same day! The extent of his injuries obviously weren’t that serious.

Kids get into school yard fights all the time. They get suspended, expelled and maybe community service…..not convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and a possible 22 years in prison! That’s ridiculous.

Remember back in the day, Kids would fight, school officials would call in both families. There would be mediation between the kids, both would get some kind of suspension or reprimand and everyone would move on. It didnt matter what color the kids were. Forgive me. This column is going to ramble and stumble a bit before I get to my main point. Real Talk is like that sometimes. Good conversations don’t always fit in a tight package. They wander from time to time, and the wandering provides context to the point.

My dad once explained to me that absolutely everything you accept from another human being comes with a responsibility whether stated or not. He was a bit tipsy and the conversation took place around 2 a.m. He drifted, bad-mouthed some of his best friends, bad-mouthed a couple of my friends. I was 17. I’ve never forgotten his message, and repeat it at least two or three times a year.

I’m already meandering. Stick with this column; you’ll enjoy the journey to Jena.

We’re in this age of whining and bitching about the lack of accountability among professional athletes and wannabe pro jocks when it comes to bad behavior. The message sells. I’ve sold it.

But America’s accountability crisis extends well beyond the sports world and bad behavior. You know that. Wednesday afternoon, I surfed the ‘Net and came across the video of Miss Teen South Carolina absolutely butchering a relatively easy question about why one out of five Americans can’t find the USA on a map.

Lauren Caitlin Upton’s response was unintentionally hysterical, a piece of comedic gold that must be viewed to be appreciated. Her fourth-place finish in the Miss Teen USA pageant and the subsequent Today Show pity party thrown in her honor say all you need to know about how we treat our “beautiful people.”

They can do little wrong, little we can’t excuse, and we hold them to the lowest of all standards in nearly every regard.

The 40-plus contestants who finished behind Miss Teen South Carolina should all file lawsuits. The clip is literally making millions laugh, but her rambling, incoherent soliloquy didn’t really hurt her in the pageant standings. Short of calling a group of women’s college basketball players “nappy-headed hos,” I’m not sure how the 18-year-old could’ve answered the question any worse.

I clicked from the Miss Teen video to stories about Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs’ one-Lamborghini, hit-abandon-n-run accident early Monday morning.

Briggs, a Pro Bowler, met with reporters Tuesday and fed them a line of (spit) that they pretty much refused to swallow. He claimed he “panicked” and ditched his $350,000 vehicle because he didn’t want to create a “big scene.”

Good move. By running, Briggs avoided a sobriety test, and left the police with no choice but to hit him with a few misdemeanor traffic citations. More important, Briggs handcuffed commissioner Roger Goodell, the discipline dean of the NFL. An arrest for driving under the influence could’ve potentially landed Briggs in the league’s substance-abuse program and in Goodell’s suspension crosshairs.

Instead, Bears coach Lovie Smith quickly announced that the club planned to take no action against Briggs, and Lovie grew angry when reporters asked if Briggs had been drinking.

Well, this is the organization that lost Tank Johnson to guns, pit bulls and a driving-while-sober traffic stop. I’m sure Lovie feels like his roster is owed a get-out-of-Goodell’s-office free card.

Again, it’s not just pro jocks who feel like they’re owed something. It’s not just pro jocks who have their failures rationalized and excused. It’s a societal problem, brought on by the fact that our pursuit of a bigger house, a fancier car and a splashier vacation has short-circuited our commitment to parenting. At the end of the day, only your parents can truly hold you responsible for your misdeeds. Coaches can’t. The media can’t. A judge can’t. Teachers don’t stand a chance.

This belief crystallized for me over the past couple of months as I tracked and researched the case involving the “Jena Six,” a group of Louisiana black boys who have been charged with a very serious crime after jumping, beating and stomping a white boy on school grounds.

The “Jena Six” are becoming a cause célébre for Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and the media. At least two or three times a week for the past three months, I have received an e-mail from someone asking me to support the “Jena Six.”

On the surface, the story sounds like a horrifying tale of Emmett Till-style justice. At a predominantly white high school in a segregated town (Jena), a black student sat under a shade tree that was traditionally used by white students. The next day three white students hung nooses from the tree, sparking racial tension and a sit-in (under the tree) by black students. The principal attempted to expel the three white students, but the school board overruled the principal and the students were given a suspension, which sparked more racial tension.

Police patrolled the school’s hallways. The town’s district attorney visited the school for an impromptu assembly, allegedly looked at the black students and said he could end their lives with one stroke of his pen. A little more than three months after the noose incident — and just days after two off-campus fights/heated exchanges involving a black student and white former students — the “Jena Six” punched, beat and stomped a white kid who made fun of a black kid for getting whipped in a Friday-night fight.

The white kid was knocked unconscious. After a three-hour hospital visit, he was released. The town prosecutor initially charged the “Jena Six” with attempted murder. Mychal Bell, the first of the six to stand trial and a Division-I football prospect, was convicted of aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy by an all-white, six-person jury, a white judge and a white prosecutor. His public defender did not call a single witness in his defense. Bell could be sentenced to 22 years.

Whew!

Before I go any further, let me state this: The prosecutor should’ve never charged these boys with attempted murder. The entire school board should be replaced for stopping the noose-hanging kids from being expelled.

OK, having said that, much of the mainstream reporting on this story has been misleading, irresponsible and inflammatory.

No one mentions that Mychal Bell’s clueless public defender was black. No one mentions that there were no black jurors because of the 50 people who responded to the more than 100 summons, none were black. No one mentions that Bell was already on probation for battery relating to a Christmas day incident in 2005. No one mentions that Bell was adjudicated (convicted) of two other violent crimes in 2006 and one charge of criminal damage to property. No one mentions that Bell’s father acknowledged he moved back to Louisiana in February (after seven years in Dallas) to supervise his son because of the “Jena Six” mess. No one mentions that Bell starred on the Jena High football team while constantly jeopardizing/violating his seemingly flimsy probation.

This was all talked about in open court during a bond hearing for Bell, and a newspaper in Alexandria, La., wrote about it. Just about everybody else has pretty much ignored the “other side” of the story. Including the fact that not one witness — black or white, and there were 40 statements taken — connected the jumping/beatdown of the white student (Dec. 4) to the noose incident (Sept. 1).

No one mentions that a black U.S. Attorney, Donald Washington, investigated the “Jena Six” case and held a town-hall meeting explaining that there was no evidence connecting the jumping/beatdown to the noose incident.

Only after the prosecutor overreacted (or tired of letting Bell and others skate once the successful football season was over; Bell wasn’t the only football star charged) did the “Jena Six” blame the attack on the nooses and the white shade tree.

Rather than report the truth, flames have been fanned by lazy or cowardly or agenda-driven members of the media. Because the white kid regained consciousness and survived the attack with only a swollen eye, defenders of the “Jena Six” have called it a typical “schoolyard fight.” Would anyone call it that if six white football and basketball players jumped one black kid?

I’ve mulled this topic for months, and I keep coming back to one question: Where in the hell were the parents — all of the parents, white and black?

Shame on the parents of the kids who hung the nooses for hiding behind a seemingly racist and insensitive school board when their kids were inexcusably wrong. Shame on the parents of the “Jena Six” for blaming white racism for the cowardice of a six-on-one attack.

And shame on the prosecutor, the media and Al Sharpton for not rising above the ignorance and distortions, and seeking a truth that will set everyone in Jena free, including the “Jena Six.”

I shouldn’t say “impassioned”, I should say more people would be willing to post because the people that have spoken seem impassioned. That’s why I say the things that I say sis, and that’s why alot of these brothers and sisters have bad things happen to them. The media is colorblind; it’s blind to the issues of people of color. When I see a case like this emerges, I don’t concentrate on it. Black people only make up approximately 8% of the American population. There are numerous towns throughout America with those population percentages. What it is is that black people living in metropolitans think that where they live is a microcosm of America and it is not. That’s what I’m talking about when I say that black people’s viewpoint is skewed. They def have my support. I wrote about 100 emails to CNN - I have gotten some correspondence back and they assure that they will be doing a story on the Jena 6 some time this month. Every keep an eye open for that story.

I am just curious…how many more slaps in the face will the black masses tolerate before they stand up. Between the Jena6 and Katrina, I think white America have sent black America a very powerful, clear message. I tell you right now, the pot is simmering…the question is, when will it blow over.

What should have happened in the issues is that the black kid who was assulted should have went to the police. There will be a race war in America. It is unavoidable and it will come to pass because not only do the scriptures tell you that there will be a race war, but these white people are training for one. I noticed many people stated this still goes on in the deep south but let us not forget the situations that are going on also up north in New York( the Sean Bell case, the young man who was shot at 50 times by the police and died on the morning of his wedding day) racism and injustice is running rapid and it is like a form of crack to our young people. I know that everyone has had to experience racism at some point, no matter if they are black, white, hispanic, asian ect. The real issue is society has taught youth that it is ok to fight instead of talk. I am not condoning what was done with the noose hanging from the tree, or the racial slurs being yelled at the black students, but the students as young adults should have not acted in such a violent manner. Yes the white student should have received harsher punishment, but that should not have included hospitalization. 6 on 1 is a bit extreme…and I do feel that if it was a black student yelling racial slurs at the white students, and the 6 white students beat the 1 black student, the black population would have said that a 22 year sentence is good enough. Also, I don’t understand when I read statements like “acting black”….what is that?? Who defines how black people act?? As a black woman how am I suppose to act?? I feel that it is ignorance when a black person strongly hates a person because they are white, and feel that all whites are racist..well news for the blacks that feel that way….you are racist as well. After all is said and done, there will still be racism in the world, and there always will be. But we as people can try to change the violent acts that are commited, by teaching our youths that Violence only begets more Violence.

It is a shame that we just can’t all get alone, but that said these old school games that happen all the time in the city should draw this sort of media coverage. I feel that it is not deserved until charges were brought against these 6 young men being more that assault if even that. Also that the victim of the assault should have his suffering disregarded as due to his race the hate crime motives don’t apply.
