Keyshia Cole is covering the new issue of Essence Magazine, (on sale yesterday), and in issue the 26-year-old singer sat down with ESSENCE senior writer Jeannine Amber to share her thoughts on life, love and being compared to Mary J. Blige.
ESSENCE: You recently got out of a serious relationship. How’s that been?
COLE: After my ex-boyfriend told me to go on and live my life, I saw him at a place with another girl. I was pissed! I tried to rip her head off. Then he was like, “Dude, you broke up with me.” But that’s just what it is.

“I just couldn’t do it. It’s weird. After this guy proposed to me, I was like, dang, this is everything a woman lives for: to be married, with a ring, to be able to represent something. But for me, it was the opposite. I was scared. When you get married, you become one; you don’t live just for yourself anymore. I’m just not ready for that. I’m not done with my goals in life. What’s the word when you just kind of fall back and let your man do the man thing? Submit? I’m all jacked up on that word. I just couldn’t submit. But I loved him. That’s the crazy thing about it. It’s been hard because I really missed that child.”

Keisha and LaTifah both look really good. This one of the best pictures I have ever seen of Keisha. Normally she looks really ghetto to me, but this time she doesn’t. I do wish she would not do the blonde and return to the redish orange. It was cute on her.

Keyshia Cole looks the best I’ve seen her in…forever I think. She looks clean cut and polished, very pretty. Them black eyebrows could be lightened since she just insists on wearing the blonde color hair, but regardless she looks gorgeous and natural in the face. Queen Latifah looks pretty also…even on that hog, lol.

I love Keyshia’s style and what she lacks in vocabulary she more than makes up for in sincerity. I think thats why she is often looked at as a little Mary J Blige. I love the blond on her….I wish she would atleast try a dark brown color and dont eva eva neva eva..go two tone reddish orange and blond again, I hated that color on her. She is too pretty for all that mess. ( No homo) Plus I gotta hold her down, Im originally from Oakland, California myself.
I think Queen Latifah looks lovely too….if I were her though I woouldnt have poked my tatas out like that…but what I like about Queen is that she is doing it all and big too…she is very empowering to black women…more so than alot of these celebs and seems so humble with it. Hip Hop/Rap, Guest appearances on sitcoms, Television sitcom, Talk Show, Jazz Cd, Modeling, Makeup, Movies, Designed her own makeup and bra line, endorsements, etc. She and Ice Cube have really did their thing as far as not being pigeon holed and thats the key to longevity in the business.

Keyshia is NOT Beyonce. Keyshia DID NOT have the pleasure of growing up in a nurturing environment (so to speak) as Beyonce which would have enabled her to start early and get that advantage that Beyonce has had – that support is fundamental. Beyonce had parents who quit their damn jobs for their child’s dreams… and where was Keyshia’s mom. Exactly! As far as ya’ll hating on Keyshia’s looks… Keyshia has come a MIGHTY long way. She’s definitely not as ghetto looking as she was before, therefore I am proud of her… SISTER GIRL is doing the damn thing! I was proud of her at the NFL Kick Off and I am proud of her now, she’s showing us a different side of her and I like this side a whole helluva lot better than before. Additionally, Keyshia offers a more realistic perspective on relationships that the AVERAGE woman deals with without sugarcoating it…whereas Bee (and I do love me some Bee okay!) but Bee is signing with the silver spoon still in her mouth…. she has no ideal what it means to undergo hardship and she never will.
