Queen Latifah – Poetry Man
If you didn’t get into Queen Latifah’s first jazz set, The Dana Owens Album, you missed a real treat. Queen has turned herself into quite the quintessential lady. From endorsements with Cover Girl, producing and starring in major motion pictures, to still recording. And now she’s back with her sophomore jazz album, Trav’lin’ Light, taken from the 1940′s Billie Holiday classic, which she rerecorded for the album. Queen Latifah’s new album will be released by famed jazz label Verve Records in conjunction with Flavor Unit Entertainment on September 25. She explores many hits from PeggyLee, Etta James, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae, Roberta Flack, Mary Wells, Phoebe Snow, and more.
“Poetry Man,” the track streaming above, is produced by Ron Fair and is QL’s mother’s favorite track. It’s sultry, smooth and soothing. Make sure you check it out.

Raheem DeVaughn – Woman
I feel like Raheem didn’t get as much shine as he needed to last time around on his first album, The Love Experience. He had a quite a buzz going on about him, but he never garnered any true mainstream exposure. But he’s still been performing all over and is ready to release his sophomore set, Love Behind the Melody, which his first single, “Woman.”
Upon hearing it, “Woman” reminds me of Angie Stone’s anthem to black men, “Black Brother.” Raheem’s voice is very distinctive, and very strong. He rides his music so well, which is why I fell in love with a lot of the material on his first album. So make sure you show him to some love this time around with his new album, due out November 27th.

The Queen is doing her thang. Raheem is amazing he has to be one of the hardest working male R&B artist who is being constantly overlooked . He has like 5 mixtapes his last album was amazing as well, and if you ever get a chance to see him perform live you will not be disappointed.

Raheem’s first CD was great. I live in Houston, Texas and couldn’t even buy the album here- no one was up on his CD. I had to order it off the internet. He has a beautiful voice and his words make you want to fall in love.

queen latifah’s rendition of “poetry man” is amazing. i almost like it better than the original. she has a great voice. i’m so glad she doesn’t try to sing songs that are beneath her to appeal to the market that record companies usually target and that she picks songs that reflect her maturity and skill as an artist. thanks for posting this track cl!
Two dynamic artists and I have already pre-ordered Queen Latifah’s cd and can not wait for the November release of Raheem Devaughn’s new cd. His first cd is a classic and QL’s first jazz cd was amazing.
raheem makes music that uplifts and give woman a sense of worth unlike some of these songs out today making women look degraded.

The beginning of this song sounds like … Well let’s just say that in about 10 years Latifah will be making hook music for tv commercials like Depends or I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter. She sounds nice and polished though.

I actually like this song by Queen. This is the Phoebe Snow tune. You have to really be into this type of music to get it. I hope real music lovers will embrace it.
I absolutely love Raheem Devaughn. If you didn’t get his first album you better ask somebody, it is that DEAL! I saw him live at LOVE the club in D.C. and he is a great performer. With all the shine that J. Holiday is getting, and not to hate cause I do like “Bed”, Raheem has that D.C. flava too and is a much better artist than J. Holiday.

@ 33, that’s why Raheem isn’t getting as much play. People would rather hear about fu*king than loving. It’s really sad. But time will tell and the true musicians will continue to shine long after some of the 1-hit wonders run out of creative ways to talk about getting their freak on.
Nice to hear real music every now and then. That QL joint is nicely produced, it’s like candy to your ears. Music you can just sit back and really listen to. By the hey ya’ll be checking for some new music from Shanice. I heard some of her new music, and her pen is possessed right now.
I bought Raheem’s first album and it’s ridiculous how he’s so slept on. I love the song, it’s good to hear those kinds of messages, cause it’s too much crap being recorded now. I hope he’ll get his due credits with this sophomore.
Queen Latifah is a beautiful surprise. I had never heard her sing before, and I might have to cop the new jazz album and maybe even the first, her voice is so beautiful. And to think that this rapper turned singer sings far better than most R&B singer.

Raheem has ALWAYS been hot, his first album was amazing and he’s what the game’s been missing. If you’ve noticed, a lot of shitty music has recently come out on the airwaves, it’s the good performers who are always overlooked.

Beautiful. I’m really getting into jazz because of Amy Winehouse, so #37, it’s when popular people from TODAY cover classics or make music inspired by them that introduces new generations to the old school and causes them to seek out the old school.
