Earlier this week we blogged on that heinous HATE crime that went down in West Virgina last week. Well here is new info on the case.
On Wednesday (Sept. 12th) it was reported that the six white suspects accused of torturing Megan Williams for almost a week will not face federal hate crime charges. Logan County Prosecutor Brian Abraham said his office would pursue other charges first because they carry stiffer penalties. West Virginia’s hate crime law carries a sentence of up to 10 years.
It was also reported that Megan Williams dated one of her attackers, Bobby Brewster. This interns undermines the hate crime law, which applies to crimes motivated by racial hatred and not by non-race-related conflicts.
It was widely reported that Williams was assaulted with a knife, while being taunted with racial slurs. So just because she dated and knew the attackers this isn’t a hate crime? Some people are saying that this is a good/bad thing. As I stated, a hate crime charge carries a lesser sentence.
Community leaders and preachers spoke on behalf of the Williams family on Thursday about the prosecutors decision in the case.
“If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, acts like a duck and walks like a duck, it has to be a duck,” said Rev. Emanuel Heyliger, who represented the family during the press conference. He said if Logan County officials don’t file hate crimes charges, federal government officials should intervene. [SOURCE]
Various media sources are reporting that Megan Williams suffered from some sort of mental disability, but I couldn’t find any confirmed reports.

I read somewhere else that they were dropping the hate crimes and were going to go ahead and prosecute them on more serious federal criminal charges which all carry more time. If that is true then good but what they did to her are still hate crimes but the more time these sons-a-bitches gets then the better. And they need to definitely review and revise wth a hate crime is.
These things will get what they have coming to them. Trust…i could care less how her attack is worded in the courts…her injuries is evidence, the law knows that she was held against her will, she was raped, tortured, burned and forced to do god only knows what. Last but not least, her attackers all have records with assault and what not so I want to have faith that the law will work in the victim’s favor. If she was a minor, it would be a wrap. I feel that it was a hate crime but If we all find out that these people have to spend more than 10 years in jail, we will all be happy.
I just hope justice is served.
It is a good thing that it won’t be considered a hate crime. The maximum penalty for that is way too light in VA. They will get far more time for kidnapping.

We all know it’s a hate crime, but these new charges not only have a stiffer penality, but a better chance of sticking. So whatever they have to call it to get these monsters behind bars where they belong, so be it. Because a few years for people like this will do nothing. They’ll get back out and terrorize someone else. I hope the system gets this one right.

1.) the whole concept of “hate crime” is silly really. why should anyone be punished for the opinion they hold, whether you agree with it our not? isn’t that a violation of our Bill of Rights… like the first one!.
2.) I think that black leaders who are hoping that this should be labeled a “hate crime” only embarrass blacks… because they much rather have someone be punished less (as would be the case if thye don’t label it that way) just to support their own agendas, such as the constant push to have blacks only look in racial terms, than actually have some sort of justice for the victim (such as a stiffer penalty for the defendants)!

I didnt even read comments this time…. Im just posting. My heartfelt prayers go out to Megan and her family at this time. It was such a horrible thing that happened to her and I couldnt even finish reading it the first time it was posted because I was so disgusted. I feel that they need to charge them with whatever charge that will allow them to spend the most time in jail. Is this not a hate crime both against a disabled person and a minority? As for the young woman knowing her attacker, SO WHAT!!!!!! That still does not excuse the fact that she was tortured and nearly beaten to death.
In comparing this to the Jena6 we have to remember different state, different judges, different DA’s, different everything. So yes a typically school fight is bringing more charges than a woman nearly killed, but we are more than 500 miles apart.
Our country has literally become a disgrace, and to let this crime slip by with out harsh punishment would be simply insane. But as someone stated before even if they get one year in prison, the black inmates will make sure they get what they deserve. And in a place like West VA, I am sure they have tons of black inmates, cause I know here in VA we sure as hell do.

Hello… I just received news of this as I went over message from a poster on http://www.MySpace.com/LauraNelsonSanctuary I am so disgusted that I could just SPIT! Women and men of all races and ethnic backgrounds must work together to protect HUMANITY. This racial hatred is beyond all reason–it always was but in the year 2007 it is even more heinous and degenerating to the whole society. After the march to free the Jena 6 I tossed out a proposal that we create a national clearing house to receive and document events of this nature. We could develop a yearly event schedule wherein marches would go on across the country wherever these types of racially motivated injustices occurred. It would send the message: “Mess with us and WE gon be there!” People in today’s society MUST learn that RIGHT is RIGHT or everything is wrong for everyone!

I think it’s time to contact the press and find out why we have to continually rely on the internet for news. West Virginia local news carries stories, but they’re not even thorough. It warms my heart to see people reaching out to Megan Williams and this case. Thanks to all the people who support her through my website and for all the emails I’ve received about the case. I believe we all want the same thing: To see Megan get justice. With Malik Shabazz now representing the family, I figured we’d get more attention, but so far, nothing. From photos from the rally, it at least looks as though she is feeling better and that’s a good thing. It’s just a shame that the media is not covering it.

What happened to her was tragic. I have a question, though: Why is it only a hate crime if “white” people attack someone not “white”? It seems to me it is a double standard.
