THE ROUND UP: NAS QUOTE / KANYE WEST NAME DROPS CL & OTHER BLOGS / CHICO DE BARGE BUSTED / SHERRI SHEPHERD JOINS THE VIEW
Friday, September 7, 2007
Nas performed last night at the special Virginia Tech concert, even though he was put under heavy scrutiny from FOX’s Bill O’Reilly.
The rapper (alongside Dave Matthews, John Mayer, & Country singer Phil Vassar) performed for more than 50,000 people to help raise spirits on the VA Tech campus. Click here to read a write up on the concert.
Yesterday he released an statement on the Bill O’Reilly controversy:
“He’s a racist,” Nas said. “Everybody has a marketing plan; his marketing plan is racism. He doesn’t understand the younger generation. He deals with the past. The people he represents are Republican, older, a generation that has nothing to do with the reality of what’s happening now with my generation. … He’s not really on my radar. People like him are supposed to be taught and people like me are supposed to let n—as like him know. I don’t take him serious. His sh– is all about getting ratings or whatever. I wouldn’t honor anything Bill O’Reilly has to say. It just shows you what bloodsuckers do: They abuse something like the Virginia Tech [tragedy] for show ratings. You can’t talk to a person like that.” [SOURCE]

ANOTHER DEBARGE BEHIND BARS

Looks like jail time runs in the family. TMZ got exclusive news on Chico DeBarge and his Aug 30th arrest.
In the police report, cops say DeBarge and a female companion were driving a Toyota Camry on a Los Angeles highway when an officer observed them stop in a turn lane and switch seats. When they were pulled over by California Highway Patrol, cops say “illegal drugs and cash” were found in the car.
Chico, who once recorded a song called “Soopaman Lover,” is being held on $30,000 bail. [SOURCE]
Police arrested Chico’s older brother El DeBarge for outstanding warrants on August 26. As of today, he’s still in jail.
SHERRI SHEPHERD JOINS WHOOPI ON THE VIEW

The AP is reporting that Sherri Shepherd is indeed the fifth host on ABC’s The View.
The network will officially make the announcement on Monday morning, according to a source close to the show.
Shepherd has already co-hosted the show several times, both during Rosie’s reign and post-Rosie, and she had been rumored to be in the top two or three choices to be the fifth host on the show (Whoopi Goldberg started this week).

The thing that scares me about Bill O’Reilly is many of his listeners are people who have power and make decisions that affect us all. God knows I can’t stand Bill O’Reilly but there are times when we give him ammunition. I’m not saying this is one of those times but that man’s influence is too broad and dangerous.
Debarge- Man, I hate to hear that. That family has been through so much. By the way, I still do not believe they get the credit they deserve with regard to music.
Sherri- I’m really glad for her a actually enjoy when she on the show, however I think people are really going to be surprised when some of her “true colors” begin to surface. Though she is funny, she actually share many views with Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
Kanye- I have nothing bad to say about him and wish him success.

Bill O’ Reilly is an a**hole! Nas is right he doesn’t understand I had a huge fight with my over this issue cause my dad watches Bill O’Reilly & agreed that Nas shouldn’t participate in the show just cause that idiot put some “unsensitive” nas lyrics on his show I told my dad I was gonna buy him sum Nas cd’s! Lol
I have been sayin before they hired that crazy lunatic Rosie that the view should’ve hired Sherri! I love her! # 7 I’ve watched w/all the ladies together at once & they all seem to get along great! I just don’t like Barbara Walters she did Star Jones dirty!

Well I love the Debarge Family’s talent. They used to be fine. I say we should pray that they get help please. This is so sad. Their mom wrote a book about the abusive father they had. I think that is where their problem stem from.
Interesting to me that Lindsey Lohan had drugs in car and is getting away with it. I don’t condone drug use but I say FREE DEBARGE.

I am not a fan of Bill O’ Riley, but I watched the clip, and I think there is some sense in what he is saying. Of course, not all of Nas’s music is not about killing and what not, but that is a huge part of his lyrical content. So, If i was in that position, I would not invite Nas, 50 cent, or probably any other rapper to that event. People want to hear postivieness in times of tragedy, and making a few “inspirational” songs or whatnot, is not going to make people forget about all the other song you have done. And if the students were the ones objecting to his performance, that seems like it would have been even more of a reason for him to not perfom.

The video about Nas was interesting…it was killing me that they were pronouncing his name wrong, even the “hip hop writer” pronounced it wrong. what kind of crap is that? Bill O’reily needs to get real, Nas has produced just as many postiive songs if not more. He should find a better topic to argue about, b/c Nas sure isn’t the most violent artist out there….shoot he’s not even violent at all.

I think Nas could’ve expressed himself better than that. It doesn’t make the brother look good. No disrespect to the brother, but Bill O’Reilly speaks for a hell of alot more than some old-head caucasians and Republicans. It just goes to show that alot of these “militant” cats are only militantly trying to force themselves on white people.

I am with Nas. I am with Velvet J (comment #9). Generational factors are not really an issue with my. You can find emphatic baby boomers who understand the need for each generation to grow. That is not the issue. The issue is that generally, the majority of people who listen to Bill O’Reilly’s rhetoric are those that have a mindset that effectively stereotypes anything and everything that doesn’t behave or look similar to them. And that’s dangerous.
I don’t take that bastard seriously. He had his own drama a few years ago that he shuffled under the rug via a settlement agreement. Not to mention this is the same guy that used to host the sleazy Inside Edition, so he is NOT one to talk.

And anyone who listens to the BEAUTY of Nas’ music knows not to classify him as a gangsta rapper. Which is, precisely why, Bill O’Reilly (and others who think like him) generally try to group all of us and classify us in the same category.
Very unfortunate, but like Velvet says. These are those who hold the hammer and rule the world.

I agree with Nas I think that Bill O Riley is a racist and his marketing plan is racism. I mean think about it O Riley likes to strike a fear into white conservative America and that is to attack young black men. Nas is a A LOT smarter and his lyrics are much more insightful then a lot of rappers. Why doesn’t Bill O Riley attack those white singers that talk about depression and death all the time? Doesn’t rock music that is about suicide, death, and depression have an even more negative impact on America’s youth? O Riley likes to attack young black entertainers because it sells and racism sells. And isn’t O Riley the guy that was accused of sexually harassing an employee? I don’t take O Riley very seriously at all he has zero credibility.

I didn’t watch the video, never watch anything, but congrats on your success. I think celebrities SHOULD recognize you, it’s not like the mainstream media cares about them. I always thought that Jay Z commercial was funny, the one where he was like “photos you won’t see in the tabloids” lol Yeah, he gets a bit of press, but nothing in comparison to his white counterparts… that’s why it was funny, the line seemed so assuming lol Anyway, good deal!
As for Nas and Bill Reily, white people see us as a burden…in a cost and benefit analysis, we are at best a good server and at worst welfare sycophants. I don’t even think racism, when I mull it over, I think it just their brand of uber capitalism. I will say, though, I don’t take the side of rappers… Sure, it IS just for fun, but they know we take it as more, they know we build our lives around rap, it’s become the crux of our new generation. So, they should act accordingly, but they don’t…they talk about murder, drugs, and senseless stuff, even though they know they’re being emulated. It’s their decision, but they shouldn’t act as though they care… Snoop can’t be a philanthropist and an East Sider. And, before people lay in about rap and rappers and poetry (ha) I won’t debate it, I don’t care to. Really. Leave me alone, in advance.

@ ComptonChick,
DeBarge was a group that was really hot back in the early 80s (obviously before your time). They had megahits like Love Me in a Special Way, Rhythm of the Night, Stay With Me, Time Will Reveal, etc. A lot of rappers sample them and the biggest one is Biggie’s One More Chance (remix) which samples Stay With Me.
They were supposed to be the second coming of the Jacksons but then one of the brothers died of AIDS or something, a few others got caught up in drugs, one got caught in a scandal over being married to Janet Jackson, Chico did a bid (even though he wasn’t an original member) … you get the point.

Debarge’s racial makeup is a caucasian father and a black mother. The mother and most of the children allege that the father molested the children as well as beat the mother. It’s funny because I was in Barnes and Noble yesterday and I read an article on them in Vibe Magazine.

Nas is one of the very few people who can incorporate limited swearing into his dialect and still sound intelligent and justified since he is a genius and a man of eloquent words.
I’m a conservative black person (don’t label me a Republican, I just have some conservative views about the obvious- gay marraige, abortion, etc.) and I can’t stand O’Reilly either. I read his book just to verify the reasoning behind why he rubs me the wrong way.

no offense yo, but the gun talks are usually just diction used to talk about REAL LIFE. His more revered work doesn’t say “I’ma kill a nigga with a gun, etc.”, but in songs, such as “One Mic” he may speak on the extremes and similiarites between wars on the streets vs. wars/genocides in Africa. That’s why you hear gun and murder talk but it’s not the same as bang-bang-shoot-a-nigga-die-slow music.
Plus- the man is not an idiot. He wouldn’t even use music pieces like that for performance execution. You know your fan base and your audience before you perform. That’s why rihanna sings Umbrella on BET but does Shut Up and Drive on MTV…

Bill O’Reilly, Hannity & Colmes, Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck…they are all racist. Even though half of them won’t admit it. I work with people like this. They can be racist, but will still accept your money. The law firm that I worked for does it all the time. Oddly enough it was founded by Johnnie Cochran. The Yts there talk about their black clients and mimic slave talk, but that money is good no matter how black someone is. The black attorneys don’t speak up, which is condoning it IMO. The YTs are think, “Oh well, I’m working under Johnnie Cochran’s name, so I’m not racist.”
Luckily I’ve switched to the defense side of law.

I find it funny how someone as ignorant and unintellegent as Bill O’Reily has a the moral authority over Hip-Hop, while he creates a show that provides a platform for ignorance and intolerance.
