TEYANA TAYLOR COVERS TRACE MAGAZINE

Friday, September 7, 2007

( Photography by: Marc Baptiste )

The newest protégé of Pharrell’s Star Trak label, Teyana Taylor, covers the new issue of Trace Magazine (on stands now). Alexandra Phanor kicked it with the 16 year-old Harlem native and they spoke on how she taught Beyonce how to dance, her crush on Shia Labeouf, and her ‘Sweet Sixteen’ experience.

Snippets from the article, as well as more photos are after the cut.

TEYANA ON TEACHING BEYONCE

Beyoncé even enlisted Teyana to teach her the dance for a segment in her “Ring The Alarm” video.

“She was mad focused and really wanted to learn,” recalls Teyana.

TEYANA ON HER CRUSH

“It’s Shia Labeouf! I’ve got my eye on him. I mean, for real. He’s so cute and I looove his swagger.”

But she makes sure to note that her career is her boyfriend

“Yeah, I do have my eye on Shia, but to be honest performing is my boyfriend right now. That’s just what I really love and we’ve been together for so long.”

TEYANA ON HER LOOK

“I always stood out as far as dressing,” she says. “I like to look different and people know me for that. My look is a mix of old-school hip-hop and skater.”

TEYANA ON PHARRELL

“I sang for the Senior Vice President of A&R at Universal, and he asked me the top five people I would really want to work with and my first three were Pharrell. It was crazy to meet him. I mean I love that dude and we connected,” Teyana recalls.

Pharrell couldn’t agree more, “I heard about how talented she was, and I wanted to meet her. I was impressed she could, sing, dance and rap, so we gave her a shot.”

TEYANA ON RECEIVING FREE CLOTHES FROM ‘HEATHERETTE’

“I love their clothes. They make a dress, and it’s not like a pretty princess dress. It’s not girlie but more rock star and out there. That’s like the only dresses I’ll wear. They are just like me – they are unique and don’t care what people say. I fell in love with them, and them with me,” says Teyana.

I LOOOOOOOVE HER HAIR. Simply Gorgeous, I love to see african american women rockin their own natural hair, rather its wild N curly or kinky & bushy..I think our hair is the best. Shes very pretty, never heard of her before though.

i don’t see what’s so original about this chick. ppl have been rocking the hip-hop skater thing for a while now. however she has a cute singing voice. i won’t comment on her hair b/c i don’t know her. it’s possible that it’s fake (i saw badu with one just like it) or it could be real. the only ppl who really know, are those who are around her. regardless she also has a cute style even if it isn’t new. and i don’t think she’s ugly at all. there are some myspace pics where she looks mad pretty.

You black females are ridiculous lol. That is not a lacefront, so stop. We all know the majority of ya’ll haters are rockin tracks anyway lol. So ummm shut the fug up! Another thing, she was like that before she got with pharell. Plus she does stand out right now in the music industry. Also, the ones calling her ugly must be some unattractive azz people internally and externally. The ones who say that must be facially challenged in some way or physically challenged. If you see yourself as ugly don’t reflect yur lack of self worth on someone else. I say good luck to that young lady and wish her the best. And yes shia is fine!!

(I would make a comment about how it seems the new trend for black singers to name white actors as their celebrity crushes, but there aren’t any young, rising black actors for them to name and I’m sure they don’t want any fellow musicians. SMH@ Hollywood.)

98.

Mariah

Friday, September 7, 2007 /

I like her, but i don’t think her style is unique. Everyone is saying that style is unique and it isn’t! If you go on myspace, there’s like 1000,000,00000 profiles with the same pictures, bright colours, those hankerchiefs around their necks and rainbow coloured nikeys. It’s getting on my nerves and i think it’s HILARIOUS that this new trend is unique because it is anything but. C’mon now!

And FYI, that is her hair. I watched MSS16 and i’ve been on her myspace and i can say for sure it’s real. I don’t think she’s ugly and she’s not gorgeous, but she’s pretty in her own way. Does that make sense? I like her personality though and her voice is pretty good.

Whoever said that her rapping voice reminded them of Left Eye is wrong, that wasn’t her rapping it was someone else. Get your facts straight.

Teyana to me is a weird pretty. A unique pretty. I like her, her MSS episode is my favorite out of all the seasons and show. I like her sass and spunk. Im not going to judge her because I have yet to listen to some of her music. SMH @ all the people wishing her failure. My ass was right, black people are a doomed ass race with all this HATING. And you wonder why its so hard for real artists with a different type of style to make it big. And lastly, that is her got damn hair. That is not a got damn lacefront, sad that people actually think every black woman wears a weave. I remember when me and my cousin was walking and she had her hair out. Her is thick and long. Her hair is almost down her waist. And dark in skin tone. There was a couple of black women talking about how my cousin hair was a weave and that cant be her hair. Bunch of ignorant ass heffas. Just like some of you.

Appears to me like she’s trying too hard. What’s gonna happen when she gets tired of dressing this way. You have to be able to stand out more than just by your clothes — especially in the entertainment business. I think badu proved that already.

Anyway, Rihanna’s got Shia already. In the 2nd photo, she kind of resembles Rihanna.

Friday, September 7, 2007 /

She seems to be another young lady that will sell 22,000 copies in her first week (21,000 purchased by Pharrell). Who is going to buy her album? White people won’t buy it and neither will young black girls. I saw her Sweet Sixteen and it was funny as hell when she tried to force that death metal, party like a black “rock star”, nonsense on her “friends” and they just looked at each other with wrinkled up foreheads and said, “I ain’t no rock star, I’ma rap star!”. I honestly thought when I watched the show that the chick was a lesbian. In NYC that’s how they roll with the hoodies, the plaid button-ups, and the Air Dunks, etc, lol. They even copy the black man’s diddy bop.

@96

Thank you sis. All of a sudden Shia Lebouf is every black woman’s dream, lmao. Now imagine if Chris Brown, Sammie, and Mario all said that their dream chick is Lindsay Lohan, Hillary Duff, or the female lead in Transformers in these magazines. The earth might crack open from the rage of the black woman. I could see it now, “WE DON’T GO IN MAGAZINES SAYING THAT WE DON’T WANT BLACK MEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”. Lol, that movie screen is so powerful it’s crazy. I’m betting that within 5 years, Shia will be able to hold his own in a poker conversation with De Niro and Bill Maher as the most reknowned black female whoremonger.

@ Judah - you’re right the earth may crack open but there were the same twitterings when the Williams girls had white men, black men had many things to say, so it’s not just black women. Black men have had their share of non-black fascinations before and will again. (J. Lo, Kim Kar, that Vida chic). It just seems like you take every opportunity to talk about the interracial thing throughout all these posts. While you are very learned (I saw your posts with Mallato the other day and I totally respect some of your points) it just seems like that interracial love or fascination is something that really bothers you. I always know that if someone mentions anything about interracial relationships you’ll put out your Bible and doom everyone to hell. Interracial relationships many not fit into your moral or religious code and you should express whatever you feel my brother - it’s a reality that you may not like, but it’s not going anywhere.

I havent heard her sing or rap yet so I’ll save my comments about that for when I actually get an opportunity to hear what she does. As far as style, I think its cool that shes chosen to adopt her own personal style ,and not conform to what everyone else in the industry is wearing. If a chick isnt rocking a $1000 silky straight lace front ,weave, and walking around in a skin tight scantily clad outfit she’s NOT considered hot enough?Shed 16 .I’d persona;ly rather see a 16 year old looking and dressing their age than ,walking around looking like a 25 year old grown woman.

*And why do yall be on here worrying about what other people say? so what? that’s why i like Crunk and disorderly cuz they ride on everybody. I mean, hey if you put yourself on the internet or in the public eye, some will like you, some won’t. But if someone don’t like Beyonce, I’m not gonna come at them just because I love Beyonce. that’s them. That’s their opinion. For example everytime there is a post about Mr. Tamika Raymond, I’m going to rank on her. @121

Everyone talks about interracial relationships in all these posts sis, lol. Any interracial post or post revolving around black relationships is a guranteed 250 comments whether I comment or not. Especially if it revolves around something “negative” that the black man did or may have done. You just notice my posts because, in the spirit of the Most High and Christ, they tend to standout. I only mentioned Shia Lebouf because #96 spoke so eloquently about it and I agreed. I’ve purposely avoided some of these interracial/black man vs. black woman threads recently (i.e. Halle Berry’s pregnancy, Shaq’s divorce) because to me it’s getting tired. When the sister first posted a thread about Halle Berry and that edomite she’s pregnant by last year, I predicted not only that she would get pregnant by him but that they would also get married. I knew that there would be a bevy of house negroes and double-minded, hypocritical sisters that not only would whole-heartedly congratulate Halle but also be waiting for my comment so that they would have something to get irate about.

Furthermore, since you brought up Serena Williams, she’s exhibit A. Many black women love to say that famous black women don’t go into the magazines to slam the black man. Serena Williams gave a virtual dissertation on why the “successful black woman” MUST leave the black man behind because he’s virtual kryptonite. When the reporter that she confessed to leaked what she said, she cried, sobbed, lied, and pleaded. At least Polow Da Don was a man and stood by what he said. I’d prefer forthrightness to the tacit mentality that some black women seem to have. At least when people are honest and forthright with their feelings, one knows where they stand and the issue can be addressed.

Lastly in regards to interracial dating, the Bible, and this world; no disrespect to you, but you don’t know what’s going anywhere and when it’s going. The reason why people say things like what you said is because they think this society will last forever and it won’t. The American media has it’s citizens believing that they live in a bubble.

141.

She just seems so fake to me, like she’s just following trends and playing a role. & the fact that she’s the one responsible for the “chick noodle” shit doesn’t help her case at all lol
