I was at the game last night and she didn’t sound as awful as I thought she would. I love Keyshia but she doesn’t go a good job singing live. Faith Hill was great and I didn’t even want to see her.

It is a hard song to sing, no matter what type of voice you have. But you have to be pretty confident to take a stab. She obviously thought she could make it happen. She was worng.

Ummmm…let’s just say that this rendition will not be added to my list of Anthem classics. Way too much rolling going on in this version. For a moment, I’d forgotten what song she was singing. Thank goodness for the choir. Without them, this performance would have been empty. They helped to fill a lot of wholes in her sound. Despite all of this, I can’t say that I HATED it. I just probably won’t ever listen to it again. Hey, the national exposure is good for her career. Good move. : )

She did better than I though, you could tell she was nervous. She could have left some of those runs off though.

I loved it … She did an awesome job… i understand what you all are saying about the runs… but hey it is what it is…. I liked and enjoyed it. She can only get better and she has and she will continue.

The beginning was a little under…when ever you sing an O or and A vowel you have to make sure that the sound is forward or else it goes under pitch. but overall it wasn’t bad…the tempo wasn’t consistent but it is a very difficult song to sing in to front of millions of people so, not bad.

I’m sorry but why do some black singers have to go for overkill when it comes to singing the national anthem? I hated her weak vocal gymnastics at the start of the song. To me, The Star Spangled Banner always sounds strange when it’s sung like a gospel song. It just isn’t, and certainly not a song that’s “soulful”.

I guess the only person who gave it a definitive black flavor was Whitney.

I dunno…sometimes I wish Keyshia Cole would just sing straightforward, because every time she attempts runs and vocal acrobatics it highlights all of her vocal shortcomings. From a technical standpoint that was a terrible rendition of the Anthem. Unless she was hitting (or trying to hit) a power note, her vocals were weak and it sounded like she was running out of breath the whole time. She should really avoid half the runs she attempts because she doesn’t stick them–they sound muddied and not clean and clear.

The problem with Keyshia is she’s ALWAYS trying to do runs and power notes like she’s a belter, and she really isn’t. Vocally she’s on the same level as Ashanti, which is to say that she sounds ok when she’s singing in that middle register. There’s SOME vocal talent there, but more often than not she overextends herself.

I never post, but i just have to say that why sooooo much hating!!! She did what she does. It was totaly her. I thought she did a good job. No it was mind blowing, but did anyone really expect that. I know I did not. She is a strong and confident black woman who are doing big things. GREAT JOB!!

Um….all of ya’ll clearly don’t know about singing and pitch. Keyshia has a nice voice - - but she was flat..sharp and all in between the note she SHOULD have been at. Me saying what I’m about to say doesn’t mean that I’m a hater. If I thought Keysha did good, I would’ve given her props. However, I was a band member for 7 years, and we learned about pitch, being in tune, sharps and flats. So don’t mistake my knowledge of this for “hating”. Of course I was hoping that Keysha would sound good. In my mind, I was rooting for her to do well. There were just too many pitch problems on her part for me to overlook though. Keysha has her own sound/voice, but she has a tendency of being pitchy. I’ve heard Keysha perform on award shows and what not, so I personally wasn’t expecting a “Whitney National Anthem” performance or anything stellar to that degree. I was just expecting good and got ok.

Went to the Kanye concert when Key and Fanny opened up for him. Keyshia is no joke. THe girl can sing. No pitch problem no cracking. Just straight singing!

I think it was “ok”, it wasn’t horrible, and it wasn’t jaw-dropping. She did a respectable job. I just saw her recently at the House of Blues in Vegas and she made me a fan. She can actually sing, but as others have noted, she does have pitch problems sometimes. I was watching last night hoping she didn’t go too far off pitch, like she does when she sings “Love” live. So, she did aight, I think she needs to work more with a vocal coach to work out the kinks, but the girl can sing. And whoever compared her to Ashanti is TRIPPIN! lol

What an odd choice for NFL’s opening night. I’d give her about a 6 out of 10 — she pleasantly surprised me. I would have thought it would have been a disaster. She remembered the words and mostly stayed on pitch, but the runs were awful and she was off tempo with the choir. Still, very good for Keyshia.

When did everybody become a vocal coach.? Keyshia did extremly well and looked very beautiful. We have to uplift each other and support each other no matter what. In my opinion the best rendention I hear was TALENT TIFFANY EVANS when she sung at DALLAS STADIUM when she was 12 years old, it on her myspace page. I also feel she will sing both BEYONCE and JENNIFER HUDSON under a rug. Singing is a gift and the young lady was truely bless.

The thing is that most people lip sing the national anthem. There are very few occasions where people sing it live. But that being said, I just lose patience when people drag a 5 minute song to 10 minutes doing long runs and dragging out notes. I’m like “Just sing the damn song”. I went to see Eryka Badu once and she played with the “Tyrone ” ending for 10 minutes, to the point where I just wanted to run up and kick her in the knee cap to make her stop. Hate that style. Just my opinion.

On the other hand, this rendition of my beloved Star Spangled Banner was rushed and too over embellished. This is such a sacred song to me that I really hate when artists tend to over do it. Some people just bastardize the anthem.

ok you gotta have the vocal range and capacity to do runs and not half ass them and sound out of breath, Some people complain to those who does runs.oversingingbut they do a great job but Keyshia is not one of them. Her lower register is better. As far as her high notes…pls practice your pitch and transition, that sudden transition sounds like you’re vocal chords are cracking. Love ya Keyshia but don’t try to hard.

1. I’m a capella trained and that mess was horrid; HORRID. Those that are musically trained can really hear the disaster that went on during that youtube video. I’ll have to give this one an F-.

2. And as for her runs; I believe she did them to take attention off of the fact that she was fucking up every other note; the problem is that she used so much energy on her runs that she didn’t save enough to hit the next note correctly, thus making most of the song flat and sharp.

3. She’s no lost case though, I think she’s got a strong voice she just needs to stay within her range and stop trying to powerhouse it so much, get the breathing in order and hear the notes before you sing Keyshia, and you could be a contender (I had to throw that in lol).

4. Peyton Manninggggggg; my favoritest quarterback in the game!!!!!!!!

I do like KEYSHIA but sadly she is a studio artist! her notes were going flat all the time and her timing was also off, I didn’t enjoy this performance and I was cringing all through it!

She was flat and in and out of key. Other than that the performance was fine. If this was Mary J. or Alicia Keys (two singers who perpetually sing outta key) everyone would be praising them. People just don’t like Keyshia for some reason. I know her vocals are shaky, but when she’s on point she’s on point. I like Keyshia’s voice and I’m looking forward to her new album. She just needs a little more music training and vocal coaching. She definitly has a natural gift.

Keisha did not need the band behind her. Thats what made it sound ok, nothing fantastic.

I was very impressed with how she sang, my initial thought was I couldn’t imagine her singing this, but she was great - I get the feeling that people just don’t like her so no matter how well she sang it they wouldn’t like it anyway.

Note To The Fans: Nobody is “hating” on her, like always she didn’t perform well live. People would like her if she had a better attitude. I am not a vocal coach so I really cant speak on when a person is flat, off key or pitchy. I just really disliked this performance. I wouldnt go so far as to say she cant sing. I think she has a great voice when its under control. Its like she doesnt practice or something. I dont know, she just sounds like most of the talented girls in the church choir. I expect more from her.
