Rissi Palmer – Country Girl

A little something different for CL this time around. Meet Rissi (pronounced Ree-cee) Palmer. She’s here to show you that you don’t have to be blonde-haired and blue-eyed to be a country star. She was offered a pop record deal by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, but when it came time to pick a direction, she followed her heart and chose country. And she’s received much acclaim from media outlets alike. Now, Rissi is set to release her debut album, Rissi Palmer, tomorrow, October 23.

The lead single, “Country Girl” is a fun and sassy song where Rissi basically affirms the fact that you don’t have to fit into a specific, stereotypical mold to be a real live country girl. I love Rissi’s voice. The single is presently climbing the Billboard charts. On her debut, Rissi penned nine tracks out of the twelve-song collection, and she is very excited to finally be getting her music out to the fans.

Check out Rissi Palmer’s MySpace page to find out more information about the starlet! Also, make sure you check out her official website, rissipalmer.com.

She has a nice voice. She’ll sell, country acts have their own following. She has a way better chance of making there than in RnB.

  2. Big Nellie

    Not feeling it

  3. Caramel_Frapp

I dont care if a blue haired asian decided to sing country music. I cant STAND country music…aways whining about something. Lost dog or butter knife…smh

  4. Caramel_Frapp

excuse me…*always* Did anyone see MC on BET today? lmfao…that cheap ass jacket. Button fell clean off.

  5. Go girl! I’m not a big country fan but I like to see Black people succeed in areas where they don’t expect us too.

Even though country music is heavily influenced by Black music.

  6. Dame

Lmao at 5 missed MC. The girl sounds good but I’ll pass.

  7. Court

shes cute but these white people nare not going to be having that we let the Justins and Robins blow up with us now watch when the shoe is on the other foot. Good luck I have heard a lot about her though , 1 name, Kimberly Locke

  8. Applecake

I actually like country music, but her voice seems overworked as though she is trying to make herself have that “twang” that most country singers sing with. She sounds good though, can’t wait to see her up against Carrie Underwood. She could definately take Carrie!

  9. A FEMALE AARON NEVILLE, HUH! I GUESS IF LEANNE RHIMES , KELLY CLARKSON, & THAT AMERICAN IDOL GIRL WHO SINGS THAT SONG ABOUT CARVIN HER KEYS INTO HIS 4 WHEEL DRIVE AND SLASHIN ALL 4 TIRES, B4 HE CHEATS OR SOMETHIN, THEN RISSI SURELY CAN 2. I LOVE DAT SONG.

  10. Livewire!!

is she ke ke palmer sister??? cuz she look just like her and she got the same last name

  11. Bittersweets

Just like Rock & Roll came from the Blues, country music is also a derivative of old black music. If history is to be believed Rapp will someday be also preserved by whites like jazz is today. I saw her on TV being encouraged by Reba Mcintyre and other country folks. I must say a good voice – I believe you will do good- unfortunately i would not get to hear much of you since, well, I listen to urban radio. Much success and good luck.

  12. ms_mac

Um, Imma have to say no. Actually, hell no.

  13. msnikkibme

Her voice is gorgeous! I’m so glad to see black females representing in countrly showing that we can be more diverse than throwing blonde/brown/gold weave in our hair, shaking our ass and singing bout the same old shit. Wish her much success

  14. She sounds like Heather Headley. I think she’s pushing her voice too hard to get that country sound. Good luck anyway.

  15. meena

”Just like Rock & Roll came from the Blues, country music is also a derivative of old black music.”

…and I’m waiting for someone to come and say opera ”is also a derivative of old black music.”

  16. yopapa

noone gives two shits about a average looking black chick with a guitar
just look at how many comments this got
now maybe if she was showing some ass or had more sex appeal then everyone would be all about her

  17. BigT

    # 19 I hope you are not this encouraging to your woman
    IF YOU HAVE ONE!!

  18. plprz

she used to go to my school and church. she wanted to pursue R&B at first, but found there was less competition in the country sector. she pickedup country when her parents divorced and her mom moved her to tennessee.

  19. MS.DYME

well obviously those who don’t like conutry won’t be feeling this. Open up your minds to other genres of music people.

  20. At least she followed her heart & stayed true to what she wanted to do. She has a nice voice!

  21. The_One_The_Only

Yeah I’ve heard music before. She has a nice voice.

  22. liz

Positive music and a beautiful black women — I’ll support it!

  23. SolShine7

I found out about her a while ago on MySpace. I really like her style and country music rocks!!!!!

  24. cal

It’s better than the crap thats on bet. Suck it. I’ll buy it.

  25. Hip Hop is my baby's mama

R&B sales are down…Country music sales have done well in the past couple of years….. I guess she wants to get paid.

  26. Surprisingly, I can appreciate “good” music, reguardless of the genre. I like country music because the songs tell stories. They can be very inspirational. Country is a cousin to the blues, and if we go back far enough, we knoe who “really” orginated country or rock for that matter…

For ya’ll little kids that say country sucks or what not… you suck! LOL! Ya’ll little black kids need to open your mind than just the 4 walls of your neighborhood and Soulja Boi…

  27. Redo…

***Ya’ll little black kids need to open your minds to more than just the 4 walls of your neighborhood and Soulja Boi…

  28. t-h

    sounds good
i would definately buy that LP
i own a shania twain LP so why not
    roflmao @ 3 butterknife

  29. Take away the “Country Girl” title and this would be Pop .

Her voice sounds kind of forced. Nonetheless, I kinda like it, it’s catchy.

  30. i love country music.
this song is kinda corny but her voice is beautiful.
i’d like to hear more. even Sade had a country song lol.

”Just like Rock & Roll came from the Blues, country music is also a derivative of old black music.”

…and I’m waiting for someone to come and say opera ”is also a derivative of old black music.”

It doesn’t take a non-deaf person to recognize the similarities between country and black music and both came out of the south. Black musicians were used to entertain their white owners etc at their functions and surely had some influence on their appreciation for song. Time to time, even today some black musicians still re-do country songs: eg Whitney Houston’s biggest hit was written by Dolly Parton(i guess an opera singer). also Heather Headley great song “In my mind ” is pure country. ufortunately the social polarization of the south created a great rift between country and other forms of black music.
By the way your statement that some blacks may not want to claim Opera is just unneeded silliness(also says a lot about who and what you are).

  32. DJ MUTHA

Given the fact that “our” radio dont appreciate good singers (ie… the fact that Fantasis can barely get played on the radio, not to mention artists like Ledisi, Jill Scott or even Lil Mo) – she was wise to go Country were true vocalist are not only embraced but celebrated and recd with much fanfare…..

    DJMUTHA

  33. Not bad, and I don’t even like country music like that.

  34. Ms. AKA

She is going to make it! The song is catchy! Sister can sing! This maybe he next anthem for all country music for women! I am not a fan of coutry music, but it is nice.

  35. MsShe

I appreciate all genres of music as each has something to offer. Good music is just that good music.

#30… I agree with you. If we research music history we will find that African Americans have birth rights to it all. Just with the blues, country is a form of expression with a story to tell.

You lost me on the “…little black kids… you suck… need to open your minds…”, did not understand where that came from or why it was important to say. Although I am not a “little black kid” I believe we all are entitled to our opinions…

  36. Pookie

She has a serious case of “Man Hands” going on.

  37. dctrinigyal

very catchy song…this song will go far.

  38. This song is so bad.
It’s ridiculous how bad she sounds…
She sounds like she trying out for American Idol. It’s Not Professional at all.

    * Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy listening to Black try “other” type of music,
e.g Anthony Hamilton, Corinne Bailey Rae, etc…..

It’s Just that this record is VERY forced, contrived, and she doesn’t have the soul or conviction to sing country music…..

Singing Country Music is just a “gimmick” with her to get noticed.
And that terrible. If you don’t mean it, do say it, and certainly don’t do it….

  39. Ms. Kim

i would slit my wrists if i was forced to listen to this cacophony of nonsense….
she has a pretty voice but country music?!—-> naw baby!

  40. Bunny

not my kind of music but she does have a beautiful voice ;)

  41. JoRo

She does have a nice voice, even if the song is a bit contrived. She could do really well, country music artists tend to have extremely loyal fans.

  42. TLADY

WELL HOOT IF’N SHE WANTS TO SANG COUNTRY THEN HELL LET HER TRY AND GET’ER DONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FOR REAL SHE SOUNDED O.K. I LIKE A LITTLE BIT OF COUNTRY AND ONCE AND AWHILE!!!!!!!!

  43. I don’t know, I’ll have to see the video.

  44. dg1234

She is trying to hard to sound “Country”. Needs to tone down the twang, not feeling it.

  45. Her voice doesn’t sound forced… I think most of ya’ll are really use to hearing country, let alone, a black person singing country…we’re use to hearing runs and strong vibrato…Idk, it sounds like a natural tone for her to me…

  46. just saying

    Not bad at all

  47. papi

8 please nobodys stopping black folks from making country music,,,,
    that’s just stupid

and 30 I’m sure in your own mind blacks did everything first before whitey came and stole it right,, yea ok

  48. Tmommie3

This not my genre, but I think she will do well and I think she’ll be accepted in the county music community……….whoever said she has man hands grow up…….what does that have to do with anything. ya’ll always got to find something negative to say about somebody……..the LORD gave her those hands and that is how they are suppose to look, I wonder what yours look like?

  49. Tmommie3

I meant to say “country music community”

  50. Greatestloveofall

HEYYYYYYYYYYY, this is real nice. I like her style.

I agree with everything Networking wrote. U said it bro! I mean of course someone might not like or understand M.I.A or something (experimental/electronic rapper chick from the UK), but Country Music has been on the airwaves and TV in the US for as long as I can remember. LMAO, I’d listen to this girl over that Soulja Boy mess or any other disposable trash on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs

  51. yomama

53 relax u shouldn’t take stuff so serious
it was a joke,,meant to make someone laugh,,,maybe your the negative one

  52. Kuntry-N-Klassy

It’s good, she doing her thing. And some country music is actually nice!!!! And it doesn’t matter what color you are when it comes to expressing yourself and what’s in your heart!!!!!!!

  53. SUMPAR

This is very nice. I’m sure she has encountered many slammed doors, especially in Nashville and in country music. I can only imagine the discrimination she has and is going through. So I’m very happy for her to follow her own path and do what SHE wants to do. GOOD LUCK IN ALL YOUR EN DEVOURS!

  54. Serenity

I actually love country music, and this is very nice! Much better than Soulja Boy trying to Superman and Supersoak some hoes…

  55. leosag96

Um, good luck to her. I just can’t get with country but wish her the best.
