Rissi Palmer – Country Girl

A little something different for CL this time around. Meet Rissi (pronounced Ree-cee) Palmer. She’s here to show you that you don’t have to be blonde-haired and blue-eyed to be a country star. She was offered a pop record deal by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, but when it came time to pick a direction, she followed her heart and chose country. And she’s received much acclaim from media outlets alike. Now, Rissi is set to release her debut album, Rissi Palmer, tomorrow, October 23.

The lead single, “Country Girl” is a fun and sassy song where Rissi basically affirms the fact that you don’t have to fit into a specific, stereotypical mold to be a real live country girl. I love Rissi’s voice. The single is presently climbing the Billboard charts. On her debut, Rissi penned nine tracks out of the twelve-song collection, and she is very excited to finally be getting her music out to the fans.

Country music has always had its ebbs and flows on the pop scene. Within the last couple of decades music has been severely polarized and radio stations have been hi-jacked by corporations. No longer do we have the ability to call in requests or to listen to a disc jockeys take us on musical journeys (Electrifying Mojo). My dad loved the blues, country and blue grass music. Google Charlie Pride, Ray Charles, and The Pointer Sisters–all were black and charted with country tunes. Google Audra McDonald (currently appearing in ABC’s Private Practice), she’s famous for singing standards on Broadway. Marian Anderson (black history!) Wilhelmenia Fernandez, Leontyne Price, and many other African-Americans have had long and prosperous careers in classical music. See afrovoices.com. Blacks have achieved so much more musically than young people have been exposed to over the last two decades and that is not by accident. Those of you with the ability to research, seek it out for yourselves–don’t expect to learn it from VIBE, BET, MTV, or apparently, the classroom. One of the greatest resources is literally at your fingertips, the internet–use it. Black-out November 2nd.

  2. **claps hands** because it’s something NOT the “norm” for a black woman to sing country, also the lyrics and the title, I’m loving-because I’m a country girl, too! North Carolina-proud! Thanks for the post-Brian

She will get noticed…..I wish her well.

Hey there….Networking! (nice picture/avatar)-who took that picture?

A PRETTY BLACK GIRL SINGING COUNTRY MUSIC. HOW NOVEL. ITS LIKE WIFE SWAP OR A FISH OUT OF WATER STORY. VERY ORIGINAL. I’M GLAD RECORD COMPANIES CAN STILL SURPRISE US WITH THEIR GREAT INGENIOUS IDEAS. SO WHERE IS THIS CHICK FROM, LIKE SAN DIEGO OR SOMETHING. I KNOW THAT COUNTRY MUSIC IS REALLY BIG OUT WEST.

  4. People need to let go of the stereotypes and just enjoy and listen to the music!!

her voice is amazing and she has TRUE talent , raw talent that cant be bought or rearranged in the studio!

i mean black folks were the ones who created the blues and country music so why not let it live on.

judging artists is just goin to put us ten steps back

this is a hot song and i don’t usually enjoy songs about country stuff cuz ima city gurl but i like it a lot!!

  5. hellokittylover

not my kind of thing, the Brits aren’t country fans lol

i love ray charles though and hes a country musician who managed to cross over without sounding like something hes not. rissi should listen to him more.

i like the fact thats shes different and original but i dont see myself copying her album

  6. I, too , think her twang is forced… Id love to hear her on a slower song.

  7. @62, what up? Actually it’s a cropped pic of me kickin it in the club… You know the camera man in the corner of the club that has the backdrop and you pay him $5 dollars and you and all your friends get together and pose in your best “fast-tail” or “prison inmate” pose cuz u looking fresh 2 def from head to toe that night? Yeah…it’s one of those pics! LOL!

  8. It looks retouched, but I’m just that fly! haha!

39, I was just being funny…you’ll have to know my personality in person to see where I was coming from.

…and 52…yes, blacks did do everything first…since you brought it up.

  9. yes

i’ll pass, if i cant square dance to it then i aint tryin to hear it…

  10. Good voice, bad shtick. Same thing with that idiot Cowboy Troy. Either you’re country or you’re not, and they’re NOT. Has nothing to do with skin color. I’ve always said if I was to go into music, it would be country or rock, so I sympathize, but…no.

I wonder if everyone has listened to her entire album because it is great. Country girl is by no means her best song. “Leavin on my Mind” is my favorite. To me she sounds very natural. She adds something. I’m not an authority on speech but I’m supposing that not just white people have that drawl. I am not into country as such but I like when I hear something good. And she is good.

  12. rayi

sorry, meant to say “Leavin’ on your mind” is my favorite song.

Congratulations Rissi!!!! I thinks she’ll do well. She has a beautiful voice and if some of the top names in country music are encouraging her then who would I be to discourage her. I think that’s the biggest problem that we, black people, have…..not encouraging our own. We have as much right as others to cross music barriers as well as other barriers as long as we don’t lose who we are in the process. Most of you have stated that much of the music we hear today has derived from black music anyway, well country isn’t any different from what research and history states. Go girl!!!!!

  14. i see what she’s trying to do, but i can’t into it personally. she sounds nice, and i like that it’s different coming from a black woman. Hell, I started listening to Britney spears new album, sh!t ain’t bad. Got a couple of Gwen Stefani and Pink songs in my ipod too! And what!

  15. Alex

The Album is AMAZING!!! START TO FINISH! U dont have to be a country fan. IT’S JUST GREAT MUSIC THAT SIMPLE!!!! There isn’t one song on there that I don’t like. Rissi Is what music is.. Its New, Fresh, A BREATH OF FRESH AIR! I bought 3 copies for family and friends and have a signed copy by her after a live performance. SHE IS THE REAL DEAL GUYS! THIS IS MUSIC! FINALLY!

  16. Lorne

I like it. Country girl was the first single in order to push spins. It’s a pretty generic pop type country song. They could put anyones face on the cover of the country girl single, and you would enjoy it just the same. BUT……….When you preview the songs on the album, you will be pleseantly surpised at the breadth of her talent and abilities. I hope she gets the support to be able to put a couple of more singles out there.

  17. MUSIC JONES

That beautiful black skin is gonna be a concern in the redneck country circuit… but SHE SOUNDS GREAT AND THE LOOK IS DEF THERE… GOOD LUCK
