Now under the leadership of designer Karl Lagerfeld, The House Of Chanel has added a fresh and young appeal that generates not only the celebrity, the modern woman. I must admit I visit my resident Chanel store at least once a month and should probably handcuff my hands so, I won’t go near my wallet…
When we think of Chanel in black entertainment – we might think of Foxy Brown and Lil Kim first because they obviously loved the brand enough to mention it in a number of songs. Beyonce was recently spotted in New York decked out in nothing but Chanel accessories. Alexis Phiffer, Kerry Washington…the list goes on and on. Black entertainment and fashion loves the brand and always will.

We should, as a community, stop supporting designers that make it clear that they are not speaking to us. There are plenty of black designers and designers that support black models and staff (like DVF) that we could profile.

Clearly for those of you mentioning “couture” you don’t know what it is.
Couture essentially means custom-made or made-to-measure. The bags and shoes that you see here are pret-a-porter – in english meaning “ready to wear” and are far from couture although Chanel IS one of the exlcusive labels that under law can call it’s custom designs haute couture. That’s why you see all these youngins running around wearing it – they know what labels are but they don’t know what fashion is (let’s not even mention high fashion b/c there are few who are even barely familiar with it).
Lesson being, true glamour is derived from custom made clothes, one of a kind accessories, which these things are NOT. And as already mentioned, yes, support Black designers, especially those providing bespoke/custom clothing because there is nothing more prestigous than wearing something tailored and made to your body and supporting your own community.
