JAY-Z’S AMERICAN GANGSTER
Tuesday, October 30, 2007

♫ Jay-Z - Roc Boys
Only a week away from its November 6th release, Jay-Z’s American Gangster has leaked. Some were skeptical of Hov’s return, but in all honesty, his album delivers. I’m impressed with the production, as always, as well as the infectious hooks that I think I feel like a lot of songs lack these days, along with the immaculate sample choices made for the new record. AG is Jay-Z’s take on the story adapted for the same-titled film, starring Denzel Washington, T.I. (who was recently released from jail), and Common.
♫ Jay-Z feat. Lil’ Wayne - Hello Brooklyn
Although I have enjoyed the album, it definitely wasn’t exactly what I expected. The album flows really well, and features appearances from Lil’ Wayne, Pharrell Williams, Nas and a little speaking cameo from longtime girlfriend, Beyonce. Stand out tracks include “Pray,” “Hello Brooklyn,” and some of my personal favorites are “I Know,” produced by The Neptunes and the tightly arranged “American Dream.”

How in da hell can you take Jay-Z seriously with him talking about slinging crack and all that mess when he never said any of that mess on his last records???
The Clipse and Wu-Tang can do crack rap correct but Jay-Z cannot! Stick to what you do best Jay and that’s coming with lyrics straight from the street.
I know for a fact his love for Beyonce has got him so sprung that his rapping has gone from excellent to borderline Chingy mess………………
Lemme give y’all dumb Jay stans an example of Jay’s falling off:
Ahuh Ahuh (Yea Rihanna)
Ahuh Ahuh (Good girl gone bad)
Ahuh Ahuh (Take three… Action)
Ahuh Ahuh
No clouds in my storms
Let it rain
I hydroplane into fame (Eh eh)
Come’n down with the Dow Jones
When the clouds come we gone
We Rocafella (Eh eh)
She fly higher than weather
And she rocks it better
You know me
An anticipation for precipitation
stacks chips for the rainy day (Eh eh)
Jay, rain man is back with lil Ms. Sunshine
Rihanna where you at?
WHAT THE FUCK! WAS THAT HOT MESS OF A VERSE????????????????????????????????? Jay needs to sit his ass down while we can still reminisce about his presence in the 90s-2004

Now he’s a wannabe gangster? LMAO it’s a concept album about a gangster flick what do you want him to do?!? It’s not like he’s just putting out this music because he wants to keep a hard street image. He was inspired by the movie..

It’s an incredible album that talks about the rise AND FALL of a drug lord. If you clueless yentas actually listened to the entire album you’d see that he gives you whole picture with no bullshitting. It’s not just another typical rap album glorifying violence and drugs. You people probably nevah went outside your white picket fences in the country.

Please stop hating on Jay-Z and other artist for that matter. This is one of the problems in the Black Community…we can’t support one another. The man was a kid from the projects, and now he is a successful millionaire! Why not support the Black man rather than talk crap? It’s funny how we dis and talk about our own people; yet you never hear this kind of negitivity from other races. They support their own…come yall we have to stop being stop hateful, and jealous of Our Own!

This album is incredible, I’ve been listening to it non-stop for the past week. I vibe with “Say Hello”, “Fallin”, “American Dreamin” and “Success”. This album is lyricially and musically superior to “The Blueprint” (a classic in its own right). Jay has outdone himself, but he needed the motivation (AG the film) to drop gem after gem on this album. I can’t wait to see the film AG, & I’m sure that will allow me to appreciate AG the album even more.

My favorite rapper of all time. His flow is soo damn smooth. I loved Kingdom Come by the way. It’s all the people checking for the lame dance track rap that couldn’t get the concept. I know i was pissed because i couldn’t get tickets to none of his shows they sold out completely in minutes. Jay gives a great concert, I’ve been to 4.
hey everyone is entitled to their opinions about what they like or dislike but it’s pathetic to posting on someone you so called hate more than once. it’s people on here like 4 or more times trying to internet bullies, How Lame. We love him and you don’t we get it now move on. Unless your getting paid to hate by the amount of post you put up there’s no point to keep coming back. The next time you choose to “quote” an artist please get the lyrics right and not online. It’s apparent that Hov’s flow is above you which is the reason why you think his lyrics don’t make any sense. The correct verse says
No clouds in my STONES (referring to clear diamonds)
Let it rain, I hydroplane in the bank
Coming down like the Dow Jones
When the clouds come we gone, we Rocafella
WE fly higher than weather

Funny that you mention the WU because they do have an album coming out in about a month. It was supposed to come out on December 4th but Ghostface had an album dropping the same day so they changed it. Shows how much YOU know about hip hop. Oh and by the way Ghostface, Method Man, Raekwon have praised Jay-Z in the past. Not to mention other legends like Rakim, Slick Rick, Snoop, AND BIGGIE. NOW WHAT? The only way I will believe that you are from the BK is if you say that you’re from Park Slope or Williamsburg. You sound like a wannabe hipster cracka.

THANKS FOR GIVING THIS ALBUM A GOOD REVIEW.
GOOD MUSIC SLIPS THROUGH THE CRACKS WHEN IT’S REVIEWED BY THE WRONG PEOPLE OR PEOPLE WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND HIP HOP. IN THIS CASE, PEOPLE WHO DIDN’T UNDERSTAND THE 80′S AND THAT THIS ALBUM’S TAILORED TO A MOVIE.
NIKKI #23 & #24: SORRY TO DISAPPOINT YOU BOO, BUT THAT RECORD YOU HEAR EVERY TIME THE PROMO’S PLAYED ON T.V., ETC. FOR AG IS JAY’S SONG “HEART OF THE CITY”. YES, IT’S A SAMPLE FROM A PAST RECORD, BUT THE VERSION THAT’S BEING USED IS JAY’S. OF COURSE, HE’S ON THE ALBUM. DENZEL WANTED JAY TO DO THE COMPLETE SOUNDTRACK, BUT BRIAN GRAZER DIDN’T THINK HE WAS INTERESTED AT THE TIME.
I KNEW THIS WOULD BE ANOTHER CLASSIC. NO NEED IN BEING TIRED OF THE PERSON WHO DELIVERS CONSISTENTLY.

No one on here from NY should EVER hate on JAY or MJB! What the hell??!!! These have got to be KIDS who have no idea what the ascension of hip hop should be..
There are plenty of rap artists who are great lyrically. Relevancy in the CURRENT music world is what counts! Sitting on past fame makes you out of touch, out of sync, and longing for the past… Let’s move forward and congratulate HOV on taking the premise of a great movie, and creating a wonderful narrative.
You can’t listen to only two or three songs on the album and form a complete, educated opinion.. It tells a story!! You wouldnt’ read a books first two chapters and assume that entire book is whack!?? Come on black folks–get the diddies off the site hatin on JIGGA!!!

Jay Z doesn’t rep anything positive to me, all he does is brag about himself and how he fucks his BBBBBBitchBBBEyonce. Brooklyn is calling it how I see the album, the whole album is a little boring to me, from the beats to the lyrics, come on how repetitive can it get? I’ve heard most of the tracks and he should have reached out to Kayne, if your going for the 70’s feel bring in Ye to do at least one track, but since this isn’t the 70’s how is he suppose to take us back to the hustling days of that era when dude wasn’t even hustling in the 70’s? When I heard Blue Magic with P, I thought he was going to bring it back to the 80’s, then I heard most of the tracks and it feels like its the 70’s again, like I don’t get it. Is Jay trying to rap from Frank Lucas perspective? This shit is silly to me.

Jay-z once said in his lyrics that he “dumb down his lyrics and doubled his dollars; yet they criticized him for it; but they all yelled Holla”. This man, as does 50 cent, believes that the American public is too dumb to comprehend anything other than nursery rhymes and street talk. And looking from his vantage point, I would agree. I mean, Jay-z had to resort to rehashing Reasonable Doubt for fear of American Gangster not matriculating into dollars and street cred. This 40 year old man is rhyming about guns, dope, and bitches. Rap/Hiphop is for the youth made by the youth. Again, he is 40. He dissed MIMS for the same reasons he changed his whole lyrical style—Getting Money. I can only assume that he addressed music insiders about American Gangster the way he did out of fear of it not receiving good reviews. Please, music critics/bloggers/writers use your degrees! Don’t fall for his “Aura over Substance” crap! I know there aren’t many albums out right now for which Jay-z’s album could be compared to but damn; stop treating him like he’s George Bush before the war—An unquestionable leader. Give an honest review! Is he saying anything new, groundbreaking, or earth shattering? No! I must say, however, that he is very smart. Seizing the opportunity to hide behind a movie is genius. That way if it isn’t successful, as would be expected coming from him, he can claim it was inspired by the movie– it’s not his best. Remember, he started making this album prior to the movie. The movie may bolster album sales, but the underserved/uneducated followers of Jay-z will consider it a classic. Biggie said it best: “Treat your last album like your first”.
It’s sad that a person judges everything by the one thing he knows. Good-luck Jay-z!

let me get in this….one this track and the one with the b are the best ones i’ve heard so far…this track is fire by itself….
naked truth is a banging album sorry…trackswise, rapwise, kim really made that hardcore banging CD from a female’s perspective. if things was equal between male and female lil’ kim and lauryn back when she was still making music would be as revered as biggie and jay.
that’s my story and i’m sticking to it.
as for jigga, i liked kingdome come because i felt it was real for where he was in his life. i dug the shit, cause i’m in his age group and i got where he was. when all the young shit comes with a dance, someone who can rnyme about something is cool with me.
but for real tho…i dig that duffle bag boys joint…it ain’t bout nothing but the rhyme and the track and the hook is banging….
so hey we got some shit to choose from and argue about…that’s what hip-hop should be but for that real grimy nyc hip hop shit…i’m thinking ghost will be bringing that shit….

The conceptual album is an excuse to bring the gun/drug talk back out, I can’t respect it if he’s rapping from another man’s perspective, that’s lame. Its either you doing it for real or you not, don’t use the album as an excuse to bring the gangster shit back out. You Shawn Carter or Frank Lucas, this dude been out the street for years and I’m just not buying it. If its hip hop then we can get down, if it’s not hip hop oriented then its lame to me, I’ve heard it all before.

i listened to the whole cd today. and while it has a 1996 hiphop feeling to it. the content once again is lame. its just as boring as Kingdom Come.
the two best tracks are “ignorant shit” where beanie sigel out flowd jay as always and “success” where nas crushed jay.
the track with little wayne left me scratching my head. ever since mtv said llil wayne was the best when he never was. but the caliber of lyrics have totally fallen by the way side.
Amercian ganster once agian is Jay-Z riding on the coattails of someting(the movie) to bring relevance to his album. Like he’s always done but using other artist his whole career.
Jay should have stayed retired

Blue Magic and the first song on here are ok…not up to Jay’s caliber.
The song with Lil Wayne is fire…would jam that for a minute
Happy Halloween!
